The most noble is Yusuf A.S. who

00:00:02 --> 00:00:04

was the son of the Prophet of Allah,

00:00:04 --> 00:00:07

meaning Yaqub A.S. who was the son

00:00:07 --> 00:00:10

of the Prophet of Allah, which was Ishaq

00:00:10 --> 00:00:13

A.S. who was the son of Khalilullah,

00:00:14 --> 00:00:17

meaning Ibrahim A.S., four generations of Prophets,

00:00:17 --> 00:00:20

subhanallah, four generations continuously of Prophets.

00:00:21 --> 00:00:23

So if you can imagine the honor that

00:00:23 --> 00:00:26

Yusuf A.S. has been bestowed with that

00:00:26 --> 00:00:27

he is the fourth in the line of

00:00:27 --> 00:00:30

Prophets and his great great grandfather is who,

00:00:30 --> 00:00:33

none other than Ibrahim A.S., Abu'l

00:00:33 --> 00:00:37

-Anbiya, the father of Anbiya A.S. So

00:00:37 --> 00:00:40

from that perspective obviously Yusuf A.S. he

00:00:40 --> 00:00:42

is the most noble of humans.

00:00:43 --> 00:00:45

So the Sahaba they went on to say

00:00:45 --> 00:00:48

that we are not asking you about that.

00:00:48 --> 00:00:53

So the Prophet A.S. understood that they

00:00:53 --> 00:00:56

were asking about their own people.

00:00:57 --> 00:01:02

Are you asking me about the tribes of

00:01:02 --> 00:01:02

the Arabs?

00:01:03 --> 00:01:08

So they said, then the Prophet A.S.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:16

said that the best of the people in

00:01:16 --> 00:01:17

Islam are the ones that were the best

00:01:17 --> 00:01:20

in Jahiliyyah once they understand.

00:01:20 --> 00:01:23

So this is against a general rule that

00:01:23 --> 00:01:27

we have that people that become Muslim, they

00:01:28 --> 00:01:33

came with certain habits, certain traits, certain things

00:01:33 --> 00:01:36

that they used to implement in their lives

00:01:36 --> 00:01:37

and they used to practice in their lives

00:01:37 --> 00:01:40

that were part of their culture or part

00:01:40 --> 00:01:43

of the religion that they were practicing and

00:01:43 --> 00:01:44

there is nothing wrong with that as long

00:01:44 --> 00:01:47

as there is no shirk or anything like

00:01:47 --> 00:01:48

that being permitted.

00:01:48 --> 00:01:52

So Islam is recognizing those qualities that those

00:01:52 --> 00:01:55

people had even prior to becoming Muslim and

00:01:55 --> 00:01:58

sometimes those same qualities actually lead a person

00:01:58 --> 00:01:59

to Islam.

00:01:59 --> 00:02:01

So the Prophet A.S. said that the

00:02:01 --> 00:02:04

best of the people in Islam were the

00:02:04 --> 00:02:07

best in Jahiliyyah once they understand.

00:02:07 --> 00:02:09

Once they understand meaning, they understand the concept

00:02:09 --> 00:02:12

of Tawheed, they understand the concept of the

00:02:12 --> 00:02:14

obedience of Allah S.W.T., they understand

00:02:14 --> 00:02:16

that the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. is

00:02:16 --> 00:02:19

the last Prophet, then obviously those same attributes,

00:02:19 --> 00:02:22

those same habits, they bring them over to

00:02:22 --> 00:02:25

Islam and they benefit Islam, they benefit the

00:02:25 --> 00:02:28

Ummah and obviously they benefit themselves.

00:02:30 --> 00:02:32

The other thing that we should understand here

00:02:32 --> 00:02:36

is that the dreams of the Anbiya A

00:02:36 --> 00:02:38

.S. are a revelation from Allah S.W

00:02:38 --> 00:02:41

.T. Ibn Abbas S.A.W. said that

00:02:41 --> 00:02:49

the dreams of Anbiya A.S. are a

00:02:49 --> 00:02:50

form of Wahi.

00:02:54 --> 00:02:58

So what was Yusuf A.S. seeing in

00:02:58 --> 00:02:58

this dream?

00:02:59 --> 00:03:02

He was seeing 11 stars, the sun and

00:03:02 --> 00:03:04

the moon and the tafsir of that was

00:03:04 --> 00:03:06

ultimately we find at the end of the

00:03:06 --> 00:03:10

Surah that 11 of his brothers and the

00:03:10 --> 00:03:13

sun and the moon, meaning his parents, they

00:03:13 --> 00:03:15

all prostrate to him at the end of

00:03:15 --> 00:03:16

the Surah.

00:03:16 --> 00:03:19

So the question is that why can a

00:03:19 --> 00:03:21

human prostrate in front of another human being?

00:03:22 --> 00:03:23

Isn't that a form of Shirk?

00:03:23 --> 00:03:27

So the answer to that is that before

00:03:27 --> 00:03:31

this Ummah, before the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad

00:03:31 --> 00:03:34

S.A.W. people used to make Sajdah

00:03:34 --> 00:03:37

to other people and that was permissible and

00:03:37 --> 00:03:40

that was known as a Sajdah of Takrim,

00:03:40 --> 00:03:43

Sajdah of respect, not a Sajdah of Ibadah.

00:03:43 --> 00:03:47

But because this Ummah, it has closed all

00:03:47 --> 00:03:49

doors of Shirk.

00:03:49 --> 00:03:52

Anything that could be comparable to Shirk or

00:03:52 --> 00:03:55

could be understood as Shirk, could be understood

00:03:55 --> 00:03:58

as polytheism, the doors of that has been

00:03:58 --> 00:03:59

closed for this Ummah and we are not

00:03:59 --> 00:04:02

allowed to do anything that could lead us

00:04:02 --> 00:04:03

down that path.

00:04:03 --> 00:04:06

So this Ummah, our Ummah has been forbidden

00:04:06 --> 00:04:08

from doing that type of thing.

00:04:08 --> 00:04:10

But prior to our Ummah, people used to

00:04:10 --> 00:04:12

make Sajdah to each other as a sign

00:04:12 --> 00:04:15

of respect, as a sign of honor and

00:04:15 --> 00:04:18

it was perfectly permissible for them to do

00:04:18 --> 00:04:18

that.

00:04:20 --> 00:04:23

The next Ayah, Yaqub A.S. said to

00:04:23 --> 00:04:32

Yusuf, O my beloved son, do not tell

00:04:32 --> 00:04:33

this dream to your brothers.

00:04:34 --> 00:04:37

So Yaqub A.S. being a Prophet, he

00:04:37 --> 00:04:39

understood exactly what this dream meant.

00:04:41 --> 00:04:44

And obviously the brothers of Yusuf A.S.,

00:04:44 --> 00:04:46

even though they may not have been Prophets,

00:04:46 --> 00:04:49

but they are the sons of Prophets and

00:04:49 --> 00:04:51

it is quite possible that they also can

00:04:51 --> 00:04:53

understand what this dream means.

00:04:54 --> 00:04:57

So Yaqub A.S. said to Yusuf, do

00:04:57 --> 00:05:00

not tell your brothers this dream.

00:05:01 --> 00:05:04

Because he already knew that there was some

00:05:04 --> 00:05:06

kind of sibling rivalry between the brothers, they

00:05:06 --> 00:05:09

were jealous of Yusuf A.S. and therefore

00:05:09 --> 00:05:12

there was a possibility that they could have

00:05:12 --> 00:05:14

harmed him and done him wrong because of

00:05:14 --> 00:05:17

this dream that Yusuf A.S. had seen.

00:05:17 --> 00:05:22

So he said, do not tell anybody this

00:05:22 --> 00:05:25

dream, especially your brothers, do not tell them

00:05:25 --> 00:05:25

this dream.

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27

And I'm going to talk about, Hadith which

00:05:27 --> 00:05:31

talk about how we should regard dreams, I'll

00:05:31 --> 00:05:32

talk about that in a minute.

00:05:33 --> 00:05:35

But the question is that Yusuf A.S.'s

00:05:35 --> 00:05:38

brothers, were they that mean, were they that

00:05:38 --> 00:05:44

bad, that they have been kind of regarded

00:05:44 --> 00:05:47

as the evil brothers of Yusuf A.S.?

00:05:47 --> 00:05:50

So the Fasireen say that they were not

00:05:50 --> 00:05:53

bad in the sense that they wanted to

00:05:53 --> 00:05:56

actually harm Yusuf A.S. or do him

00:05:56 --> 00:05:59

a great deal of harm, why?

00:05:59 --> 00:06:02

Because the discussions that will be mentioned next

00:06:02 --> 00:06:06

week, they started off with the mention of

00:06:06 --> 00:06:10

killing and then they said, okay, we won't

00:06:10 --> 00:06:11

kill him, let's just put him in the

00:06:11 --> 00:06:12

middle of the desert.

00:06:13 --> 00:06:15

And then it went from putting him in

00:06:15 --> 00:06:18

the middle of the desert, which was also

00:06:18 --> 00:06:21

a sure form of destruction, to putting him

00:06:21 --> 00:06:24

in a well from which he could be

00:06:24 --> 00:06:28

ultimately rescued because tribes are passing by and

00:06:28 --> 00:06:31

they would be going to this well to

00:06:31 --> 00:06:33

get water out for their animals and for

00:06:33 --> 00:06:34

themselves.

00:06:34 --> 00:06:36

So for sure somebody is going to pick

00:06:36 --> 00:06:38

him up and take him away.

00:06:38 --> 00:06:42

So the discussion went from one extreme to

00:06:42 --> 00:06:44

at least, okay, put him in a well

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46

where he can be saved and he can

00:06:46 --> 00:06:47

be taken up.

00:06:47 --> 00:06:50

So from this we can understand that they

00:06:50 --> 00:06:52

were not really bad nation in a way

00:06:52 --> 00:06:54

that they wanted to actually kill Yusuf A

00:06:54 --> 00:06:57

.S. or destroy him in any way, shape

00:06:57 --> 00:06:59

or form because they came to that conclusion

00:06:59 --> 00:07:01

that they're not going to kill him, they're

00:07:01 --> 00:07:03

going to leave him in such a situation

00:07:03 --> 00:07:05

where he can be ultimately rescued.

00:07:06 --> 00:07:09

And this is actually a sign that they

00:07:09 --> 00:07:12

were obviously the sons of prophets and the

00:07:12 --> 00:07:14

fact that they had this thought was because

00:07:14 --> 00:07:18

their nature inside them was not the nature

00:07:18 --> 00:07:22

of evil people, they had in them this

00:07:22 --> 00:07:25

good-natured quality that they didn't really want

00:07:25 --> 00:07:26

to kill him.

00:07:28 --> 00:07:30

So what about sibling rivalry?

00:07:30 --> 00:07:34

We understand from this that is something that

00:07:34 --> 00:07:39

is very natural among siblings, brothers, sisters, especially

00:07:39 --> 00:07:43

the older kids when a new addition comes

00:07:43 --> 00:07:45

to the family, a new baby, the oldest

00:07:45 --> 00:07:48

become jealous or if the father is giving

00:07:48 --> 00:07:51

priority to one over the other then the

00:07:51 --> 00:07:52

others become jealous.

00:07:52 --> 00:07:55

So this is something that is completely natural

00:07:55 --> 00:07:56

and this happens.

00:07:56 --> 00:07:58

But as parents we need to try to

00:07:58 --> 00:08:00

make sure that we don't allow that to

00:08:00 --> 00:08:03

happen, we should not show impartiality between our

00:08:03 --> 00:08:03

children.

00:08:04 --> 00:08:05

There is a hadith in which the Prophet

00:08:05 --> 00:08:08

A.S. he was approached by a Sahabi

00:08:08 --> 00:08:11

who said Ya Rasulallah I gave one of

00:08:11 --> 00:08:13

my sons a gift and I would like

00:08:13 --> 00:08:15

you to make a dua of barakah for

00:08:15 --> 00:08:17

the fact that I have given him this

00:08:17 --> 00:08:18

gift.

00:08:18 --> 00:08:20

The Prophet A.S. asked a very simple

00:08:20 --> 00:08:22

question, he said did you give any of

00:08:22 --> 00:08:24

your other sons the same gift?

00:08:24 --> 00:08:26

He said no Ya Rasulallah I didn't.

00:08:27 --> 00:08:30

So then the Prophet A.S. said then

00:08:30 --> 00:08:32

why are you making me a witness to

00:08:32 --> 00:08:33

zulm, oppression.

00:08:35 --> 00:08:38

So this shows that when you are giving

00:08:38 --> 00:08:43

favor, displaying favoritism to one sister or one

00:08:43 --> 00:08:46

brother over the others then this is a

00:08:46 --> 00:08:47

form of zulm against the others.

00:08:48 --> 00:08:51

So favoritism we have to, obviously there is

00:08:51 --> 00:08:54

always an inclination towards loving the youngest one

00:08:54 --> 00:08:56

of the family because it's a new addition,

00:08:56 --> 00:08:58

the baby of the family but it should

00:08:58 --> 00:09:01

be done in such a discreet way that

00:09:01 --> 00:09:03

the others don't feel that they are being

00:09:03 --> 00:09:05

rejected or being ignored.

00:09:05 --> 00:09:07

This is a very important principle that we

00:09:07 --> 00:09:08

need to keep in mind.

00:09:11 --> 00:09:14

Going back to the issue of the dreams,

00:09:15 --> 00:09:17

there are three types of dreams that humans

00:09:17 --> 00:09:21

have and many people email me and ask

00:09:21 --> 00:09:23

me questions about dreams, I'm not an expert

00:09:23 --> 00:09:23

on dreams
