AI: Summary ©
This is the 19th chapter of the book
called
Saman sunnah sunnatan hasanah
al Sa'ihyah.
The chapter
about the person
who starts
a good practice
or someone who introduces
bad practice
within the deen of Allah
Previously, we talked about the importance and significance
of adhering to the sunnah
of the Prophet
and
the dangers
of introducing
or acting upon the bidah and the innovations
in the deen of Allahu Jalal Uqram.
Now Imam An Nawawi
introduces
new chapter
that,
the reward
or the virtues of the person
who starts a good practice
within the deen of Allah
Before we go into the detail of this,
Imam An Nawawi has quoted a few verses
from the Quran
as usual. The first one is
the ayah from Surah Al Furqan
in which Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says that
amongst the
characteristics of the believers or Ibadur Rahman particularly,
the special slaves of Allah
is
One of the characteristics
of Ibadur Rahman,
the slaves of the most merciful is
that they always make du'a to Allah
and they say,
Our lord, grant us
from
our
spouses, from our wives and husbands,
and our offspring.
The coolness of our eyes.
Wallah,
grant us coolness of our eyes
through our spouses
and through our offspring.
Wajalnaalil
muttaqeena
imam.
Umama o Allah,
make us the imam and the leaders
of the pious people.
And the second ayah is the ayah from
Surat Al Ambiya,
where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says about the
prophets.
After
making the mention of
many Prophets including Sayyidina Musa
Harun
Ibrahim
and others,
Allah
says, We made them Imams,
we made them leaders.
Guiding by Our command.
So these ambiya,
these prophets, they were the leaders
guiding,
they themselves were guided
by the commandment of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and they also guided people,
they also guided people by the permission of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
towards good practices.
The reason Imam An Nawawi Rahamalai has included
the first verse or quoted the first verse
in this chapter
is,
which actually
the is dulal or the point of,
evidence in this ayah is wajalalalalmultakeena
imamah. That part of the dua of the
believers and the special slaves of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala is
that they always ask Allah, oh Allah make
us the leaders of the pious people.
According to Arabic
dictionary or the grammar, the word Imam means
leader, and Imam can be evil Imam as
well.
Someone
who leads people towards evil
and
sins,
he is also
known according to the Arabic dictionary, He is
also the imam.
So anyone
who leads people,
anyone who takes the leads becomes the imam.
So the believers always ask Allah, O Allah,
give us tawfeeq and ability
to
guide and lead the muttaqeen.
The believers,
those who have the fear and taqwa in
their hearts. Wallah give us tawfiq and ability
to guide them,
to continue advising them, to continue guiding them
towards your path, towards
your religion, towards the Quran and the Sunnah
of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
And which also means, Oh Allah, do not
allow us to become the leaders of evil,
to
become the leaders of sins
or bad practices.
So this must be
part of the Du'a of the believers, wajalna
lil muttaqina imam.
And,
if you look at this
ayah particularly,
this is the second part of the du'a,
The first part
is,
Allah grant us from our spouses and our
offspring the coolness of our eyes.
And then the second part is, wajalalal
muttaqeena imamah. O Allah make us the imam
for the muttaqeen.
Which actually indicates
that every person is imam
and a leader for his own household.
The husband is the imam for his wife
and his children.
The mother,
she is also within her capacity, she is
also imam
for her children when it comes to giving
them tarbiyah.
That is why Allah
made these two parts of the dua together.
That the believer will ask Allah, O Allah
grant us coolness
of our eyes
through our
spouses and offspring and give us tawfiq and
ability to become the leaders and the imams
of the muttaqeen which actually indicates, oh Allah
make our spouses and our offspring amongst the
muttaqeen.
And let us be the imam and the
leaders of those muttaqeen.
So very beautiful and powerful du'a.
So we should remember and memorize this du'a.
And there is no harm
in including this du'a in your daily prayers,
and
in your tashahood, in nafal prayer, even fard
prayer,
include and specially in this age and time,
when we are faced by so many trials
and tribulations, especially our children.
They are faced with so many trials and
challenges
and tribulations,
we need to make du'a for them. As
a parents,
one of the greatest obligation that we have
towards our children is, that we continuously
remember them in our duas.
Because no matter
how much effort you make in giving the
tarbiyah to your children, if you neglect that
part, the part of du'a,
they can still go astray.
So without the tawfiq of Allah, without the
help of Allah, without the mercy of Allah,
your children cannot remain on the straight path,
so you have to
continuously
beg Allah that O Allah, keep my children
on the straight path.
And this is also one of the lesson
that we learn from the Prophets of Allah.
Sayyiduna Ibrahim Khalilullah
The forefather of the Prophets and the Messengers.
Every single prophet and messenger who came after
Ibrahim alaihis salami, they came, all of them,
they came from the progeny of Ibrahim alaihis
salami including the best of the creation Muhammadur
Rasoolullah
sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
Ibrahim alaihis salam himself is the Prophet of
Allah,
and a messenger of Allah.
And his son,
he's also Both of his sons, Ishmael and
Ishaq alaihis salam, both of them they are
also prophets.
Quran,
In the stories of the Prophet there are
many many lessons for those who have intellect.
Those who want to let,
learn lesson, take lessons from the stories of
the Prophet, there are many lesson.
And this is the reason that Allah
has mentioned
the stories of the Prophet repeatedly in the
Quran in different ways,
and various aspects of the lives of the
Prophet.
So one of those aspects of the life
of Sayyiduna Ibrahim khalil alaihi sallahu alaihi sallahu
alaihi wasallam was that he never neglected the
part of the dua.
Even he made dua to Allah
before the birth of the child.
And when he made dua to Allah
for the child, he not simply say, O
Allah grant me a son.
No.
Rather he said,
Oh Allah grant me a child who is
amongst the pious and righteous people.
Oh Allah grant me a righteous and pious
child.
So, he kept begging Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
for so many years,
to the level that he were very very
old.
Then Allah
blessed him with a child. And then when
Allah
blessed him with a child,
again he did not neglect that part of
the tarbiyyah.
And which actually he saw
the obligation towards his children.
He made du'a to Allah,
Wa joonubaniya
and na'gudal asna.
Wa Allah protect me
and my children from the worship of the
idols.
Subhanallah, Prophet of Allah.
Many of us we may think,
I'm a Muslim,
my wife is a Muslim,
and our children are Muslims.
So,
what's the point of making such dua? Oh
Allah, keep us away from the worship of
the idols.
What what what do we learn from the
dua of Sayyiduna? Ibrahim Khalilullah
The Prophet of Allah.
And his son is also going to be
the Prophet of Allah. Yet he's making dua
to Allah,
protect me and keep me safe from the
worship
and my children also from the worship of
the idols.
And then later,
again Allah
again mentioned,
another dua of Ibrahim an Islam related to
his children, rabijalimukhimasalatiumindhuriyeati.
O Allah,
keep myself the establisher of the prey, give
me tawfiq to establish the prey, umindzuri
yati and my offspring as well.
So how many of us as a parents
we make du'a for our children,
how many of us we actually ask Allah,
O Allah keep our children on the straight
path,
on the deen, O Allah keep
them away from all kinds of shirk and
bida and khurafa. How many of us we
actually make this dua?
How many of us we make dua to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wa ta'ala wa ta'ala.
Keep my children
or give my children ability and tawfiq to
establish the 5 daily prayers.
Yes, as a father, as a mother you
have the responsibility towards your children, to instruct
them, and to order them, and to encourage
them to
pray 5 times a day.
But they cannot
become a true worshipper or establisher of the
5 daily prayer without the help of Allah.
So you need Allah's assistance
continuously,
so don't neglect that part. So if you
do so,
then you will become as a father and
mother, you will become the imam of your
own children.
You will become the imam and the leader
of your own children. And this is the
purpose of this
tua,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala also said in the
second ayah which in Suratul Ambiya, wajalnaum
aimmatayyahdoonabiamrina
These prophets of Allah,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, We made them
Imams
who used to guide people by Our command.
They used to guide people towards
good practices.
So, the prophets of Allah, the messengers of
Allah, they were also
imam
and they guided people towards the deen of
Allah, towards the good practices.
And then Imam An Nawawi Rahmahullah
quoted the hadith of Abu Amr
Jareer bin Abdullah Al Bajali RadiAllahu
Ta'ala
who says,
One of the days we were with the
messenger of Allah alaihis salatu wasalam in the
morning.
Right in the morning
we were with the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam
A group of people came to him and
they were wearing and they were wrapped with
the woolen cloaks.
And
something that open shield
sheet. Okay? They didn't have proper clothing.
And they had swords
hanging in their necks.
Ammatuhmim
Mudar.
Most of them, they were
from the tribe, from the very famous tribe
amongst the Arab,
it was known as Mudar.
Balqulluhumim
Mudar.
Rather, all of them they were from Mudar.
Fatimaara
Rasulullah
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, lamma raa bihim min alfaqah.
So when the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
looked at them
and he saw them starving,
starving.
He sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam
was moved by this and
the
and and and Jariq radiAllahu ta'ala says,
the the curve of the face of Rasulullah
salallahu alaihi wa sallam changed because of being
upset
by looking at their condition.
So what happened, fadakala submakharajan.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam went to
his house and then he came back, for
Amrabilal and for Adhan
wa aqam and then he instructed Bilal radhiyallahu
ta'ala to call the Adhan, it was close
to the Adhan time.
So Bilal radhiyallahu ta'alaan who he called the
adhan
and then he said the iqamah, the Prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam led the salah from
maqatab.
Then He alaihis salatu wasallam
delivered
a short reminder.
1st and foremost,
as usual the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
recited the verse, the very first verse of
Surah An Nisa, You ayyuhannas
ittakoorabbaqum.
O people,
fear your Lord.
The
one who has created you all from 1
single soul.
And He created
his spouse and his wife
from him as well.
Referring to Adam alaihis salam and our mother
Hawa alaihis salam.
And then the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
will complete this ayaw.
Then after that
wa ta'ala created so many men and women
from these 2, from Adam and Hawa alaihi
wasallam.
Inna Allahakana 'alaykum Raqeeba, Vailly Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala is all watchful upon you. And then
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam recited another verse
from surah Al Hashar,
You ayyuhalladeenaamanu
taqullah,
or you believe fear Allah, have the taqwa
of Allah.
And every soul should look for what?
It has prepared for the tomorrow,
for the next day. Tomorrow here refers
to either
your,
the day of your death or it refers
to the day of judgement.
Every soul should look for what they have
prepared for tomorrow. And fear of fear Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala. So the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam recited these 2 verses and it will
give you a short reminder.
Obviously the sahabah,
the companions, Iswanullah
alaih majma'een, they understood the purpose
of the khutbah of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam.
And, the recitation of these two verses.
They understood
immediately
and they started giving in charity.
They knew that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam
was upset
by looking at the condition of those people,
and he actually wanted his companion to have
the fear of Allah, with regards to their
own Muslim brothers.
So this is, this was the purpose of
that reminder. So the companion of Dhru'lahu Hanwaj
Mahinde started giving sadaqah.
So jari radhiallahu ta'ala says,
The person, a person would come and he
would give
charat, he would give charity and sadaqa in
the form of deenah, another person would come
he would gives, sadaqa and charity in the
form of dirham,
another one would come and he would bring
some kind of clothes and the other person
would come and he would bring some
dates or wheat or other kind of you
know,
other things to give in charity, so everyone
contribute,
everyone contribute. Then the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam continue reminding them,
He said,
if someone
amongst you has no ability to give anything
apart from giving only half a date,
do so.
Fee Allah,
contribute,
have your share in the reward. So this
was
the very powerful reminder of the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam. So, the Sahaba Ridwanullah in
Rajbaihi they continued giving
in charity. Then Jaleel radiAllahu ta'ala says,
A person came with
a bag
that was very very heavy,
whether it has
wheat or dates in that bag.
So he brought that bag and he was
struggling to hold it, it was very heavy.
And he also donated
in front of the Prophet
And then he says, Then
once again people started giving, following Him, because
he was the one, when the Prophet
said, even if it's half a date, so
this person came with a full bag, and
then the companions, they started again following him.
And
to the extent that Jariyah
says,
Until I saw
2 big heaps of
food and clothes.
They were all,
got together
by the charity of the companion,
Until
I
observe the face of the messenger of Allah
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
glowing
and shining as it was glittered by the
gold, subhanAllah.
So firstly the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
was very upset and this was subhanAllah,
special kind of love
of the companion of Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wasalam
for the Prophet alaihi salallahu alaihi wasalam. They
would always
look at the face of the Prophet alaihis
salam and they would recognize,
if the Prophet alaihis salam was happy or
he was upset.
So, when Jariyah radiyaallahu ta'an realized this, he
said, Then the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
said,
Whoever starts
a good practice in the deen of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala,
he gets the reward of starting a good
practice in the deen,
and he also gets the reward of every
single individual
who follows his footsteps
and acting upon that good practice.
Without
anything being diminished from their reward.
So none of them will have their reward
reduced or deducted,
rather all of them they will have similar
reward. The person who started a good practice
and the person who followed.
So all of them they will have equal
reward.
And on the other hand, whoever
starts
a bad practice
in the deen of Allah
which mainly refers to innovation
and bida.
Whoever
starts
or introduces a bad habit in the deen
of Allah kanaalaihi
wizruha,
He will have the burden of his sin.
Wizruh manamilabihah
mimbadihi
and He will also obey
the burden of the sins of every single
individual who follows His footstep.
Without
any of the burden being diminished
from this sin.
So,
both ways, if the person starts a good
practice,
and the people follow him, he gets the
reward.
Obviously, first and foremost, he gets the reward
of acting upon him upon that good practice
himself, and then everyone who follows his footsteps.
On the other hand, if the person starts
a bad practice,
and he get the sin of bad practice
and also the sin of every individual
who follows his footsteps.
This is why Imam An Nabi rahamahullah
has said this chapter,
The reward and the virtues of those
who
introduce or start good practice in the deen,
and also
the
sins of those
who start bad practices in the deen of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
When it comes to good and bad practices,
how to differentiate between good and bad?
Because nowadays we find people saying that the
bid'ah or the innovation can be a good
bid'ah, and can be evil or bad bid'ah.
Bid'ah hasana or bid'ah asayyah.
Okay. Whereas the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
said,
Every innovation, every bida is misguidance.
So when it comes to
Bidha, Bidha is always, innovation is always bad.
So how to differentiate between good practice and
bad practice?
Bad practice is,
something that
you
start thinking
that there will be reward for that.
Whereas,
Allah's Messenger
the companions of 1ullahi and Ujma'een,
they never practiced it. The Prophet
never recommended,
while they did not have any,
any any baddie or any prevention or anything
to prevent them from doing so.
So,
you know previously we gave the example of
this and again,
I highlight this example you know celebrating the
birthday of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
It's a very common,
very common innovation.
Okay. Doing so, this is something that the
Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam himself never did.
And the people who do celebrate
nowadays,
you approach any one of them, would anyone
say that I'm not going to be devoted
for that? No. In fact, people do so
with the intention that they will be rewarded
for this purpose. They will be rewarded for
this purpose.
So this is according to the deen of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
according to the Hadith of the Prophet sallallahu
wa sallam, this is a evil practice. This
is a bad practice.
Because this is something that the Prophet
never did.
But, if there was any other way of
doing something
good, encouraging people,
as we find clearly in this particular hadith
when the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam encourages
companions
to start giving in charity,
and one person he came with a big
heavy bag of days or food, whatever,
and everyone followed him. This is what the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam meant. And this
is what usually, you know, a
I'm I'm sure many of you, you have
attended
the fun days that we usually do in
Ramadan. This is what we encourage people. Anyone
who starts,
you know,
pledging, you know, big amount
to give towards the masjid or to any
good cause,
and all the people who follow him, he
will get the reward because he will become
a means of encouragement for others.
So this is what Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam meant. And also,
for example when it comes to,
reading Quran,
or teaching Quran.
If someone comes up with
something, you know, a way of teaching Quran,
you know, an efficient way or a way
that is,
you know, more practical and easy for the
student,
and all the teachers, rest of the teacher
who follow his way of teaching Quran,
then this is good practice, the person will
get the reward for that.
So this is what actually rasulullah sallallahu alaihi
wasallam meant. It does not allow the person
to or anyone
to introduce anything new in the deen of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala with the intention of
getting reward because then it becomes
and it becomes
innovation.
And the prophet shalallahu alaihi wa sallam said,
The evilest of the
matters
is,
what?
Newly invented matters.
So you must stay away from innovations and
always try to follow the sunnah of the
Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. The scholars also
have said
So if you find that, there is a
Sunnah of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam that
has been abandoned,
then if you revive it, and those people
who follow it, you will get the reward,
Insha'Allah.
For example,
in this particular Masjid,
and
some other masjid, or I would say, few
of them.
We have the practice of leaving a gap
between the adhan of the Maghrib and the
salah.
Okay. This is something that the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam used to do.
And he used to encourage his company. You
to say, salukablil
Maghrib.
Saluqablilmagrib
limansha.
So the prophet used to encourage his companions
to pray tulaqa before Magrib. And before Magrib
does not mean before sunset because that is
prohibited time anyway. So before Maghrib means, before
the Maghrib first pray, before the Maghrib actually
before the Maghrib jama'a, 2 rakat.
But in many mashadid or I would say
most of the mashadid
you don't find that gap. So as soon
as the Mu'adhvin completes the adhan,
he calls the iqamah and salah, and the
congregational prayers starts.
So, they don't give you the opportunity to
perform those 2 rakas.
But here inshaAllah, by the permission of Allah
we try to revive this practice,
good practice, that our nabi salallahu alaihi wa
sallam encouraged us. Another good example would be,
doing the zikr of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
after further pray. And unfortunately we find nowadays,
many people as soon as the imam says,
Assalamu alaikum
hamadullah,
you find almost you know
few people from every single row, straight away
they get up and they leave, they they
are in rush. Yes, if they have genuine
reason, no problem. But
the actual practice of the Prophet shalallahu alaihi
wa sallam and the sahaba radhwalahi
wali majmaeen would be that they would stay
in their place and they would continue remembering
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. As Abu lahimnu Abbas
radhiallahu ta'ala says,
that remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after
the salah was a common practice amongst
the companions of the Godulillahi
majma'in during the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam. And the Prophet shalallahu alaihi wa sallam
has told us about the great virtue and
the reward of staying in your place where
you have offered the salah and you continue
remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
said, The angels of Allah
continue making dua for the person
after he has or she has completed their
salah, and they remain in the place
where they have offered their first salah. As
long as they remain there, they keep themselves
busy with the zikr of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala. As long as they stay there, the
angels of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make du'a
for them. The angels make du'a for them
and they what they say, Allahummafirla,
Allahummarham,
oh Allah forgive him, oh Allah have mercy
on you.
So, which means that if you get up
after salah straight away,
you will be deprived from the a from
the dua of the angels. So this is
another
good practice of the sunnah that we should
try to revive.
Okay? And if a person does so,
and he encourages others, he will get the
reward.
So if you were to advise
1 or 2 brothers,
who usually you see that they are in
rush in hurry
after every single salah, you advise them, Brother,
it is better if you stay for a
couple of minutes, continue doing the dhikr of
Allah, say, subhanAllah,
alhamdulillah, allahuqba read ayatul kursi and other other
other, adakar
that Rasulullah
used to read himself or he has recommended,
if you advise him and the person start
doing that,
you will get the reward.
You will get the reward. And then that
person advises someone else,
again you will get the reward. And the
chain continues like this. This is the beauty
of the deen of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that
he gives us tawfiq and ability to adhere
to the sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam and we ask Allah to protect
us from all kinds of innovations and the
muhdatha.
The second hadith in this chapter
that Imam An Nawawi has quoted the hadith
of Abdullahi Mas'ud radiAllahu ta'ala anhu
who says the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
said,
There is no soul
that is murdered
today,
except
that there will be a burden of sin
on the shoulders
or on the neck
of the very
first person
who murdered,
who was none other
than one of the 2 sons of Adam
Ali Hisulatas.
Any murder that happens in this world,
and continues all the way up to the
day of judgement,
for every single murder,
the son of Adam
kabeel,
the one who killed his own brother Habil,
out of jealousy and hasad,
he will get the burden of every single
man. Just imagine how many murders
take place everyday in this whole world, since
Allah created this world.
And since that time, how many murders
have been committed,
so he'll get the he'll get the sin
of every single murder.
And this is also true for the person
who starts any kind of evil act,
whether it is murder or
stealing
or, or anything, any evil.
Within a community, within a society,
where there is safety and security.
Say, there is a community, there's a city,
or an area, they're completely safe.
A person comes, and he commits this major
sin. And then after that, there is another
murder, another stealing, another evil.
So if the chain continues,
the person who started that, that evil in
that community, in that area, in that country,
he will get the sin, he will get
the burden of the sin of every single
person
who continues committing that sin. Because he's the
one who introduced,
he's the one who opened that door towards
the evil.
So that is why Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam
said, the very first person who murdered, he
will get the bird he will get the
burden
of
the murder of every single
murder that takes place until the day of
judgement.
So,
on one hand you have the great reward
of,
starting something good, starting good practice, introducing good
practice,
and on the other hand you have
the sin of starting something evil
and bad
or opening the doors towards the fitna
and towards
the evil. May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
make us mafati alkayr.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
allow us to become the keys of the
good. And may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
make us to become
blocks for the evil.
