Alright. Are you guys okay with that?
Alright. Let's get started.
The next in our
line of the promised ones or the Ashirmu
Bashirin,
last week we talked about Abu Bakr as
Siddiq RadiAllahu Anwarallah.
The next 1 is of course none other
than Umar ibn Al Khattab RadiAllahu Anwarallah.
May
Allah be pleased with him.
There are actually 12 sections to this part
that I've put that's why we will do
6 today, hopefully,
and then we'll do whatever we don't get
done today, we'll get done tomorrow
because I wanna make sure that we're done
by 10 so that there's some time for
Q and A, before because last time we
went a little bit over. Insha'Allah.
Of course his name, his lineage,
he is ibn Nufail ibn Abdul Uzza ibn
Rabah ibn Abdullah ibn Nukirt ibn Raza ibn
Adi ibn Kaab ibn Nuway Was his lineage
from his father. His mother
was Hanuman bin Hashim Al Mughira, ibn, Abdullah,
ibn Amar, ibn Mahzoon.
This is his, lineage.
He embraced Islam
in the 6th year of the prophet's mission
and some say it was the 5th year.
The more stronger opinion is that he embraced
Islam
in the 6th year of the prophet's mission,
but there is some weight
to the fact that it was in the
5th year of the mission of the Prophet
alaihis salatu as salam and his dawah in
Mecca.
Ibn Umar Radi allahu anhumah
narrated that the Prophet
said, oh Allah,
enter Excuse me. Honor Islam
through the dearest of these 2 men to
you.
Abu Jahal ibn Hisham or Umar ibn Al
Khattab. He asked Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. This
was at a time where the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam
knew and understood that people of influence.
If they were to come into Islam,
they would give Islam a boost. They would
give Islam a boost.
This is something that is should be a
wisdom that we take today is that people
of influence,
we shouldn't necessarily
As soon as they accept Islam, put them
on a pedestal. They shouldn't be out giving
talks and things. But
their coming into Islam does have a positive
impact. It does have a positive impact. We've
seen it lately, and I'm not gonna mention
names, but you know, very famous people who
were famous, before accepted Islam. It
it brought a lot of interest into the
religion because people are wondering if a person
like this accepts Islam,
then there must be something. There must be
something to it, and it causes people to
look into it. And when people look into
it,
Allah
guides through that. So people of influence are
always been important. The prophet
knew that 2 very influential people at his
time
was
Abu Jahl and Amr ibn al Khattab. That
if 1 of these 2 men came, the
way that their persona was, the way that
their they carried themselves, they would bring a
much needed boost to the Muslim community. Because
the Muslims were suffering. They were having to
hide. Like, they could not
worship publicly.
They were still meeting in the house of
Arqam. Like, they still could not go out
publicly.
And the ones who did go out publicly
would get in trouble. They would get punished.
There were spies in the city of Medina
trying to find out who were the Muslims
so that they could,
terrorize them, so that they could imprison them.
Whatever they could do to them to harass
them to leave Islam, they were doing so.
So the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam needed
someone with this type of personality
to support the Muslim community.
He said, and the dearest of them to
Allah was Umar ibn al Khattab
because you have to look at what he
asked Allah. He didn't He himself
knew that 1 of them would would be
good for Islam, either 1. But he said,
O Allah, whichever of these is dear to
you, you make the choice. Whichever of these
2 is dear to you, bring 1 of
them to Islam.
And he said Allah chose Umar ibn al
Khattab radiallahu an.
Shurei ibn Awaid
conveyed that ibn Umar ibn Al Khattab, said,
I went after the messenger
before I became a Muslim, and I found
that he had preceded me.
So I stood behind him. He began to
recite
Suratul Haqqah. Suratul Haqqah is 1 of the
chapters of the Quran that the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam
said frightens him so badly that it made
him have gray hairs before he should have.
That Suratul Haqqah was 1 of the surahs
that scared him so deeply that it caused
him to have gray before he should have.
And so I said to myself,
no excuse me, and I kept marveling at
the composition of the Quran and said to
myself,
this is by Allah a poet like the
qur'aish.
He was hearing Surat Haqqah being recited. You
have to look at the wisdom of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. He's hearing Surat Haqqah being
recited, and he's saying to himself, this sounds
just like
qaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaqaq where it says, Indeed the Quran is
the word of a noble Messenger, and it
is not the word of a poet even
if you don't not believe.
The wisdom of
Allah At this moment, when Umar is thinking,
what he's reciting is just like the poet
Allah
The Prophet
recited the verse. Indeed, the Quran is the
word of the noble messenger,
and it is not the word of a
poet. Little do you believe.
And I said, then there must be a
soothsayer. He must be a soothsayer because he
now he knows what I'm thinking. Right? Like
he's in my head. So he must be
a magician. He's in my head. Then what
is the what is it saying? Nor
the word of a soothsayer. The next verse,
nor the word of a soothsayer.
How little heed do you pay? How little
pay You're not paying attention. Look at this.
How This is why we say that the
Quran is kalam of Allah. It is Allah's
speech to us. He's speaking to us,
and Umar is thinking, first, this must be
a poet. Allah says not a poet. He
said, okay, then this guy must be a
soothsayer because he knows what I'm thinking. Then
Allah says, no 1 is a soothsayer.
How little are you paying attention? It is
a revelation from the Lord of all the
worlds. And if he
had made up a saying and ascribed them
to us, we would have seized him.
We would have seized him by his hand,
by force.
Thereupon,
Umar said
Islam entered into my heart. Entered into my
heart. Because we know that what happened is
he was on his way. He wanted to
harm the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. But
when he's hearing these verses, they struck him.
They struck him deep. He's thinking to himself
there's there's no way. Allah is speaking directly
to me.
Anas ibn Malik radhiallahu an reported that Umar
went out holding his sword.
So a man from the house of
Excuse me. A man from the house of
Zura met him and said, Where are you
headed, O Umar? He said, I am on
my way to kill Muhammad.
He said, How will you live safely amongst
the house of Hashim? Meaning his tribe. Like
if you go and kill him, Banu Hashim,
you'll never be safe from them. They were
1 of the biggest and and and most
fierce. The warriors of Banu Hashim were known
throughout Arabia. He said, how will you live
with the house of Hashim and the house
of Zura after killing Muhammad?
Umar Radhiallahu An said, I think you're a
renegade and you have left the religion you
are following. He said, let me give you
a surprise. Your sister and her husband have
also renegaded, and they have left the religion
you are following.
I'm gonna surprise you real quick. Your sister
and her husband have both become a Muslim.
Omar left furiously until he reached them. He
had a man from the Mahajirun with them
called Khabab. When Khabab heard Urma's voice, he
hid himself in the house. Umar entered upon
them and said, what was that humming sound
I heard? Because they were reciting from the
Quran. He said, what was that humming sound
I heard? They had been reciting from Surah
Al Taha.
They said, We were just talking. He said,
Perhaps you have
renegaded. Meaning that you've you've become a disbeliever.
You've you've renounced the religion of of your
forefathers.
His brother-in-law said to him, what if, O
Omar,
your religion's not the right 1? What if
the way you are following is not the
right 1?
Omar jumped on his brother-in-law and kicked him
furiously, and his sister came up and pushed
him away from her husband. So he slapped
her in a so hard that it made
her face bleed.
She said angrily, what if our umar, your
religion is not the right 1? I bear
witness that there is no deity except Allah,
and I bear witness that Muhammad is indeed
the messenger of Allah. She stood up to
him. She said, What if you're not right?
When Umar despaired of what he had done,
he regretted
it. He said, give me this paper
so that I may read it. The the
parchment from Surat Al Taha that they were
reading from. And Umar was literate, so his
sister said, you are filthy and none may
touch it except the purified ones. Go and
take,
make ahusl,
and come then. So he went, made ghusl,
came back, and took the parchment, and read
Suratul Taha until he reached the verse where
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says, Indeed I am
Allah.
There is no deity except for me. So
fa'agudu
waakimasala.
So worship me and establish the salah. Umar
said, tell me where Muhammad is.
When Khabab heard this, he came out from
where he was hiding and he said, rejoice,
O Umar. I hope that the messenger of
Allah's supplication on Thursday becomes yours. When he
said, O Allah, honor Islam through Umar ibn
Khattab or Amr ibn Hashim who we know
as Abu Jahal.
Allah's messenger is in the house at the
base of Safahel.
Umar set out and reached the house. On
the door stood Hamza. Hamza was standing at
the door,
guarding the house of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wasallam was in.
And Talha and a number of the companions
were there as well. When Hamzah
noticed the people's fear of Umar because everybody
else is afraid of Umar. Umar was a
man whom you didn't you didn't play around
with him. He saw that all the other
people around were afraid.
Hamza said, Yes. This is Umar. This is
Umar. Let him be. If it is Allah's
will for him, he will embrace Islam and
follow the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
Otherwise,
killing him will be easy for me. Hamzah
was
Hamzah was a different breed just like some
of the rest. He said, If he embraces
Islam, it'd be good for him. If not,
killing him is not gonna be very difficult
for me. So let him come on. Let
him come.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was inside
receiving wahi. So the Messenger of Allah stood
up, approached Umar, held him from his clothes
and said, will you not stop, o Umar?
Until Allah sends you upon disgrace
and punishes you like that which He sent
on
Al Walid, ibn al Mughirah.
O Allah. This is Umar ibn al Khattab.
O Allah. Honor your religion with Umar ibn
al Khattab. Umar upon hearing this said,
Muhammad Rasulullah. He said, I bear witness that
gave it to him. Said, I bear witness
that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.
Thus he embraced Islam and said, come out
with your message publicly, O Allah's Messenger.
So after Umar embraced Islam,
the very first thing he told the Prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam is that we are
not hiding anymore. We're not hiding anymore. Come
on. Declare your message publicly and I will
support you. It is narrated that Ibn Abbas
rabiallahu an said,
asked,
Umar who is called Ba'al Farooq. Why was
he called Ba'al Farooq?
And Umar said, Hamza became a Muslim 3
days before I did. Then Allah opened my
heart to Islam, so I said, Allah, there
is no deity save him. To him belongs
the most beautiful names. No 1 on earth
was more dearer to me than the messenger
of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. I said,
Where is Allah's Messenger? And my sister said,
He is in the house of Urukham,
near Safaheel.
I reached the house
where Hamza and his companions were sitting around
the Prophet
I knocked on the outer gate. And when
the people gathered around me, Hamza said, What
is the matter with you? They said, it
is Umar. You're not gonna just let him
this him telling his own story. He said,
it's Umar. You're not
he's dangerous.
Thereupon, the messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam came out, held me from my clothes,
shook me so violently that I fell to
my knees. And he said, will you not
stop this, O Umar? I said,
The people in the house uttered Takbira so
loudly that the people in the masjid heard
them. I said, oh Allah's Messenger, are we
not on the right path whether we live
or whether we die? Are we not If
if we go out and they kill us,
are we not still on the right path
whether we live or whether we die?
He said, yes. By the 1 in whose
hands is my soul. You are on the
right path whether you live or whether you
die.
I said, why are we hiding then? Why
are we hiding? If we're if if the
threat is death,
but we are still in the right path,
why are we hiding?
By the 1 in whose hands is your
soul, we're going to come out. We came
out in 2 rows, 1 led by Hamza
and the other led by me with the
footsteps as loud as a grinder until we
entered the masjid. So when he entered into
into Islam, he said, all of us come.
We're going to the masjid. They formed 2
rows. Hamza stood at the front of 1,
Umar stood at the front of the other,
and they walked right into the Haram in
Mecca. No fear.
The Quraysh looked at me and then they
looked at Hamza, and they were struck with
anguish like never before
because only a few days had passed. They
didn't know either 1 of them had entered
Islam. Think about this. You're thinking that, you
know, these guys are hiding. We we gotta
be they're not gonna be much to them.
And here they come marching into
the Kaaba.
Hamza is at the front of 1 row,
Umar is at the front of the other
row. Neither 1 of them would any of
the Quraysh take on. They would they knew
that these men would be the death of
all of them. He would take all of
them out at once if it took. And
both of them, there's no way. There's no
way.
They were struck with anguish like never before.
On that day, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam named me Al Farooq.
Al Farooq meaning that which distinguishes
truth from falsehood. He who distinguishes truth from
falsehood.
Historians have said that Umar joined Islam at
the age of 26,
Preceded by 40 men. That means he was
the 41st person, the 41st man
to enter into Islam.
Sa'id ibn al Musaib said he was preceded
by 40 men and 10 women. So he
was the 41st man, and before him 10
other women had accepted Islam. So at that
time when he entered into Islam, there are
how many people?
51.
51 Muslims. That was it. That was all
they had. But the strength that Umar had
followed by the strength that Hamza had a
few days before was enough for the Prophet
to start
preaching publicly
in Mecca. This changed a lot of the
dynamic
of the dawah of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam.
Dawud
ibn al Hussain al Zuhari said,
When Umar became a Muslim, Jibreel alaihi salam
came down and said, O Muhammad,
the residents
of heaven have rejoice
at
the acceptance of Islam of Umar ibn al
Khattab. So Jibril came to the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam and said the resident residents
of heaven, meaning the other angels,
have rejoiced
at the acceptance of Islam of Umar because
they knew the implication
of this acceptance.
Ibn Mas'ud radiAllahu anhu said,
we have become powerful since Umar became a
Muslim. He gave them
power. Shu'ai Radiaallahu an said, when Umar became
a Muslim, we sat around the Ka'aba in
circles and performed tawaf and opposed those who
oppressed us. So his entering into Islam, they
now were able to go and do tawaf
around the Kaaba. They were able to sit
in halakat around the ka'ba. They were able
to stand up against those who oppose them.
This is why it is so important to
understand
the impact
that 1 person can have
if they accept Islam
and why I always say that we never
write anyone off. We never write anyone off
because if Allah wants to guide someone to
Islam,
there is no 1 to stop him. Allah
controls the hearts of every human being. The
Prophet said, the heart of every human
is between the 2 fingers of Allah, and
he can turn that heart which every way
that he wishes. So if Allah will someone
to come to Islam, they come to Islam.
They will be guided and they can bring
great benefits. We don't write anyone off.
His description,
he was fair in complexion with a redness
to his face. He was very tall, bald
with very red eyes, and with light facial
hair.
Wahab said his description
is like an iron horn and a strong
leader.
His children, he had 'Abdulla, Abdulrahman,
Hafsa whose mother was Zaynah Bint,
Mazoun.
He had Zayd al Akbar,
Ruqayyah whose mother was Umkhthum
Bint Ali. He had Zayd al Asghar Ubaidullah,
whose mother was
Khuthum bint Garwal.
Asim, whose mother was Gamila.
Abdulrahman
al Aswat, whose mother was Lahiya,
1 of his bond women. It was 1
of his concubines.
And here Abdur Rahman al Asghar, whose mother
was also 1 of his concubines. He had
Fatima, whose mother was Hakim bint Harith.
He had Aged,
whose mother was Atika bin Zayed. He had
Zainab whose mother was Faqih, another 1 of
his
concubines.
The Quran revelations were agreeing with him. These
are some
interesting facts about Umar ibn Khattab is that
he would say things that the Quran Allah
would then reveal
affirming what he had said.
Anas
never did that. Once, Umar ibn al Khattab
said, my lord agreed with me in 3
things.
My lord agreed with me in 3 things.
I said, oh Allah's messenger,
I wish we took the station of Ibrahim
as our praying place for some of our
prayers. I wish we took the Maqam of
Ibrahim
as a place of prayer for ourselves.
So Allah revealed
after saying After me saying that, Allah revealed
the verse from Surat Al Baqarah, and take
the standing, the maqam of Ibrahim as a
place of prayer. He said, Allah agreed with
me in this.
Concerning the verse of the veiling of women,
I said, O Allah's Messenger, I wish you
ordered your wives to cover themselves from the
men because good and bad ones walk amongst
them.
So the verse availing to the women was
revealed.
Once
the wives of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam made a united front against the Prophet,
and I said to them, It may be
that if he divorces you, his Lord will
give him better than you. Well you know
when they had the argument in the seerah,
when they when they played a trick on
the Prophet
he got so angry that he separated himself
from all of them. And Umar
came and he admonished them and he said,
If Allah decides
and he leaves
you, Allah will give him better than you.
And he said the verse of
Suratul Talaq, that if Allah wishes He could
replace them with better than you, was revealed.
So in these 3 times, Umar said, think
something that I said Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
agreed with me on. It's an honor given
to Umar ibn Khattab.
Some of his virtues and achievements.
Scholars said that when Umar became a Muslim,
it was a victory for Islam.
He made hijra.
Unlike
unlike many of the companions, they made hijra
secretly. Right? They made hijra at night secretly.
Not Omar. Not Omar. Omar did not. Omar
did not make hijra secretly.
Omar, actually, before leaving for
Medina,
he went to the Kaaba
and he made tawaf. And as he was
making tawaf, he was pointing out all the
leaders of Quraysh.
Saying that you know me and I know
you.
And then before leaving, because he did the
the tawaf of leaving, you know, like you're
supposed to make tawaf before you leave Mecca.
So he did the tawaf of leaving,
tawafatillaww.
And then he said, You know me and
I know you. I am going to make
hijrah
to the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
in,
in in in Medina, in Yathrib. And then
what did he say? He said, if any
of you would like for your mothers
to cry over your graves and for your
wives to become widows, try to stop me.
If any of you would like for your
wives to become widows today
and for your mothers to grieve over your
grave, stop me. And then he just left.
He just he just walked out and no
1 stopped him. This was Omar. Omar was
a different breed of of man.
He
participated in the Battle of Badr and Uhud
in all of the battles. He participated in
all of the battles.
He was the 1st khalifa to be named
Amiral mumineen. This was not a title given
to Abu Bakr as Siddiq.
The first khalifa to be known as Amir
al mumineen, the leader of the believers, was
Umar ibn al Khattab RadiAllahu an.
He was the first to record the Islamic
history.
He was the first to compile the Quran
in 1 book. We know that Abu Bakr
asked for it to be compiled. Right? And
collect, collected
by by Zayd. But Umar
actually put it in 1 book, in 1
book. And that is the 1 that we
read today. That is the 1 we read
today. And there are still existing copies
of the official
books that he sent out. We still have,
1 of them is in Turkey. Right? I
think 1 of them is in Turkey.
1 of them is in Egypt. 1 of
them is in, what's the what's the other
country?
Uzbekistan. Is that is that 1 of those
countries? But there are still existing copies. They're
massive by the way. They're not like like
these. Like they're they're huge.
I've seen the 1 that is in Egypt
and I've seen the 1 that's in Turkey.
They're like they're they're they're they're big books.
You're not carrying those books around with you
anywhere.
He was the 1st to gather people for
for the for the
prayer, and he is the 1st in position
to control patrols at night. So
what they mean by he was the first
to
conduct the Tarawih?
Tarawih was actually instituted initially by the Prophet
sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
He would institute tarawih prayer at night, but
he stopped doing it. And the reason why
he stopped doing it was he said that
I am afraid if we keep doing this,
Allah is going to make it wajib. Allah
is gonna make it mandatory
that you pray taraweeh. And he understood You
see the prophet was rahmatullahi
alamin. He he was merciful to us. And
he knew that if something like that
became mandatory, it would be a heavy burden.
Imagine
if Taraweeh was as obligatory
as anything else, and you went to a
masjid where the imam
had a nice long melodious voice and recited
a entire juz every night, you're standing there
for 2, 3, 4 hours every single night,
it'd be a burden, it'd be burdensome. So
he stopped. And everybody prayed taraweeh on their
own.
But after that and even the in the
during the khalifa, Bab Abu Bakr did the
same thing. But Umar during his khalifa came
out to the masjid 1 night and he
saw everybody praying separately.
He knew that Allah could not make anything
mandatory anymore because after the death of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, the wahi was
finished. Nothing else could be made mandatory.
So he joined everybody, said we should pray
together. And they started praying taraweeh again together
in jama'ah, during the khalifa of Umar ibn
Khattab.
And there is nothing wrong in this
because the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam did
it. He did it. He didn't forbid it.
He only stopped doing it out of compassion
for his Ummah.
And he said to follow my sunnah and
the sunnah of what?
The khalifa of rasidun.
Follow my sunnah and the sunnah of the
khalifa of rasidun after me because they are
rightly guided.
So he is okay. It is correct for
him to have instituted
this principle.
This is 1 thing that would be known
as bida'asana.
You know, a lot of people would like
to use that word. We don't get to
institute bida'asana.
Or people like Umar ibn Khattab could institute
things that were that were not being done
that could be considered good because he was
commanded by the Prophet
to also be followed.
He also was the 1st person to institute
patrols at night in the city of Medina.
He would have people patrolling in the city
of Medina to take care of the safety
of the Muslims.
He carried out
He he always carried with him a whip.
He would walk around with
a whip or a stick.
Omar, he would walk around with a whip
or stick. He was known to do this,
and he was known to and he was
known to use it. If you're out of
line, like, you would get the stick.
There's many many stories I could tell you
about that where he's used the stick and
he's, you know, knocked people in the head
with it. He even used it on his
wife 1 time. There's a little bit of
a
little drama that they had. But our mother
was known to keep a stick with him
and use it, and use it.
He carried the whip and used it for
discipline, made conquest, imposed taxes. He was the
first to establish the Baytul Ma'al. He was
the first to establish the Baytul Ma'al, meaning
that taxes would be paid, zakat would be
paid and it would be put into a
treasury. And from that treasury, they would decide
how to best distribute these funds to the
betterment of the Muslim Ummah.
He was the first to build cities,
appoint judges,
set up diwans,
assign soldier wages and he took along the
messenger of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam's widows
in his last pilgrimage. When he made his
last hajj, he took all the widows of
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, with him
because they weren't allowed. As we know the
order of Allah
after the death of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam, Allah ordered them to stay in their
houses. Allah ordered them to stay home. But
Umar took them with them
because he was Amir al mumineen. He took
them with him to make Hajj during his
last program last pilgrimage so that they make
it can make Hajj. Aisha radhiallahu
anha narrated that the prophet
said among the nations before you, there used
to be people who were inspired,
though they were not prophets. Meaning, they received
something called
farasa.
Meaning that Allah would give them
Allah would give them wisdom. Allah would give
them inclination
but it wouldn't be like wahi, if that
makes sense. Allah is not revealing to them
but Allah is guiding them. Allah is guiding
them to do certain things.
And he said, if there was such a
person amongst my followers,
it is Umar. And this is
a it's in Bukhari and Muslim. He said,
Umar was given
by Allah. Meaning that Allah guided the actions
of Umar ibn Khuttab. He didn't give him
but guided his actions.
Sa'd ibn Abu Waqqas
conveyed that the Prophet
said to Umar, by the 1 whose hands
is my life, whenever shaitan sees you taking
a path, he follows a path other than
yours. And this is also in Bukhari and
Muslim. Meaning that Umar was such a fierce
man and a a devout Muslim
that
if Shaytan saw him, he would just divert
his path. He would not
deal with Umar directly. He had given up
on Umar ibn al Quttaal,
RadiAllahu An.
Ibn Umar, the son of Umar report RadiAllahu
Anhuma
reported that,
My father asked the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam for permission to go to Umrah.
And the Messenger of Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said,
Oh my brother, let us have a share
in your supplication
and do not forget us.
So the Prophet
asked to Umar, When you go make umrah,
make du'a for me. Make du'a for me.
Don't forget about us.
He also reported that the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam said, Umar ibn al Khattab
is a lamp for the residents of Al
Jannah. He's a light. Umar ibn Al Khattab
is a light for the people of Al
Jannah.
Anas radhiallahu an conveyed that the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam said, the 1 who adheres
most sternly to the commands of Allah from
amongst my my ummah is Umar. The 1
who holds most firmly to the commands of
Allah in my ummah is Umar.
Abdullah ibn Umar
narrated the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
said,
I saw in a dream
that people had assembled in a gathering, and
then Abu Bakr got up and drew 1
or 2 buckets of water from a well,
but there was a weakness in his drawing.
May Allah forgive him. Then Omar took the
bucket in his
hand, and it turned into a very large
bucket. I had never seen anyone amongst the
people who could draw water as strongly as
Omar till all the people drank their fill
and the water their camels and knelt down
there. And there's also in Bukhari Muslim. So
he's basically saying that Umar is with strength,
that that Abu Bakr, as we talked about
last time, he wasn't the strongest individual in
terms of his physical prowess. Even though he
was brave, he was he was the the
most devoted to the messenger of Allah, his
best friend, his khalil, etc. But when it
came to strength,
Umar exceeded
him in that. Exceeded him in that.
He radhiallahu an also narrated the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam was speaking and he said, while
I was sleeping,
I saw that a cup full of milk
was brought to me in a cup and
I drank my fill until I noticed the
milk's wetness coming out of my nails. He
He was drinking so much milk that the
the the milk started to pour out of
his nails in his dream.
Then I gave the remaining milk to Umar
ibn Al Khattab,
the companions of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
He said, What have you interpreted about this
dream, O Messenger of Allah? And he said,
This is 'ilm. This is knowledge.
Meaning that he was so full of the
knowledge from Allah
It flowed from his nails. When he finished,
he gave that to Umar ibn al Khattab
radiAllahu an. His khalif, and this is where
we'll finish. We'll,
we'll finish in and take Q and A,
inshallah, and then we'll finish the the last
7 sections because there's 14 to this 1,
the next time inshaAllah, which will be next
Saturday, next Saturday night inshaAllah.
Hamza ibn Amr
said, Abu Bakr passed away on a Monday
night, which we talked about last week,
8 days before the end of Jumar Al
Akhirah on 13th year, and Umar began his
khalifa the next morning. Umar became became the
khalifa
the next morning.
Jami ibn Shaddad conveyed from his father that
the first thing Umar said when he ascended
on the minbar
was, O Allah, I am too harsh. Soften
me.
You see, this is also
the quality of men
that are very lacking in today's world. 1
of the things I see that we as
men
lack is self awareness.
Self awareness.
Self awareness is when you know your strengths
and you know your weaknesses.
That is a characteristic
that is powerful. When you know your strengths
and you know your weaknesses. You don't think
too highly of yourself, you also don't think
too too too lowly of yourself. You know
what you're good at, you know what you're
bad at. And you focus on being better
at the things that you're good at, and
you focus on trying to lessen some of
the things you're bad at. Omar knew he
was a harsh man. He understood it. He
knew he was a very
very hard individual.
So the first thing he said was, O
Allah, I am too harsh.
Soften me. Then he said, oh Allah, I
am weak,
so strengthen me. I am weak, so give
me strength.
Oh Allah, I am stingy,
therefore make me generous. I am stingy, therefore
make me generous. This was his first public
statement.
This is the first thing that Do you
You know, you see the public statements of
of like presidents and stuff now. Right? The
first thing they do, they get up, they
praise themselves left, right, and center. That's it.
It's just 1 big, self aggrandizing
show. Right? They're patting themselves on the back
left, right, instead of they had 10 hands
and be patting themselves.
How much we've done? Oh, we did this.
Oh, we accomplished that. Oh, I'm gonna do
this. The first thing Umar gets up and
does so that people understand who he is,
is he talks about his flaws.
He talks about his flaws. Can you imagine
that? First thing, get up. President says, I'm
I'm horrible at this. I'm horrible.
1 thing that IIIII
get about that is I respect that. I
respect that a man can get up and
say, This is what I'm not good at.
This is what I'm not good at. So
help me. And he's asking Allah
for his help. He's saying that, I am
too harsh, make me soft. I am weak,
so give me strength.
I am,
and I am stingy,
so make me generous. Make me generous.
This was
the
the the way Umar ibn al Khattab decided
to start his leadership,
and we'll go on to talk about it
next week but we'll know we you should
know that his leadership
changed the face of the world.
The the khalifa of Umar. The khalifa of
Abu Bakr,
and we'll talk about this when we get
to the end of,
Ali insha'Allah,
That each 1 of their
periods as khalifa
had a role to play, had a role
to play in the umna. Abu Bakr
took over at a time when things could
have gone really south.
Really south. Like people could have just left
Islam in droves. Right? Like the whole thing
could have just fallen apart after the death
of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. But
Abu Bakr was the strength, the glue that
held it together. We see that Omar, even
on that day lost it. You know what
I mean? And if someone like Omar
can lose it,
nobody's exempt.
Abu Bakr's wisdom and his softness and his
ability
to to to speak like the Prophet sallallahu
alaihi wasallam
was what allowed the Muslim Ummah to stay
together
and to survive the period of the death
of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
Then Umar would come in, and Umar would
begin the expansion.
Omar would come in and start building
the Muslim empire.
He would change the face of the world
in his lifetime
like no 1 had ever seen. You know,
we hear about historians about people like Heraclius.
We hear about people like Caesar. You hear
about people like Marcus Aurelius. You hear about
people like Napoleon, etcetera. All these great conquerors,
etcetera. Let me tell you. Study the life
of the calaf the the period of the
calaf of Umar ibn al Khotab and the
things he accomplished,
nobody accomplished that those types of things. And
no 1 thought, no 1, no 1
thought that
anyone
would be able to lead a band of
desert atoms.
Because they were known to be like the
most, like,
rough,
unorganized,
uneducated
in, you know, group of people on the
planet. Like, nobody was concerned about what the
the the the the boys in the desert
were doing. Like, they're not they're not an
issue.
No 1 would think that Omar Ibn Khattab
would bring out an army like he did
and bring down the 2 largest empires
that the world has ever known
and to spread Islam as far and as
wide as he did in such a short
period of time.
This is and we'll talk about that a
little bit later, but this was
some of the the the blessing that Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala gave Umar. And that
strength
that he had
carried over to his Umma. Carried over to
his Umma. The strength that he had, he
departed to this Umma and this Umma became
super strong.
This ummah became so wealthy
during the time of the caliph of of
of Umar ibn Khattab
When he established the Bayt Umar, it wasn't
very long before it was overflowing. It was
overflowing.
Muslims were not having to worry. No Muslims
were suffering and starving and poor and needy.
Umar ibn Khattab changed not only the face
of this ummah upon entering Islam,
he changed the face of the world
for this ummah for this ummah. And we
will continue on, next week insha'Allah.
Any questions about what we covered so far?
Any questions about what we covered so far?
Okay. Then I'm gonna ask all of you
a question.
What is 1 thing
that you would say
you know about Umar al Khattab, ibn al
Khattab that is the most precious thing to
you? If you had to say I know
this about Umar,
what would you say? Anybody?
Civil rights. Yes. He established
The very civil rights
that we are coined today, the civil rights,
were established
by Umar.
They were established by Umar.
There are many laws that are actually still
practiced in the west today, that were established
during the khalifa of Umar ibn al Khattab.
There's a few of them. Oh, if you
don't know, but civil rights,
was 1 of them.
He created the map. He wrote He he
created a map of Madinah. Yes. Anything else?
What are the snippets do you might know
about Umar al Khattab
This is some homework I'll give you for
next week then. Next week, I want all
of you go do a little bit of
reading. Come with a snippet about the life
of Umar ibn al Khattab
because
he was
a man's man. He was a man's man.
Like we look at And I talked about
it last week, you know, this, this,
new generation red pill movement.
You know, where we look at for we
look for masculinity in these in these red
pill guys, in these how to become, alpha
male courses.
Let me tell you something. I said this,
I got roasted on Twitter when I said
this, but it I don't I'm the type
of person that doesn't care. Right? I really
don't care. Roast me all you want. I
I'm not really paying attention, to be honest
with you. I usually tweet or post something,
and I'll walk away.
I said that if you need to tell
everyone else that you're an alpha, you probably
aren't 1.
If you need to go around telling everyone
else you're an alpha, you you probably aren't
1. If you need to take a course
on learning how to become an alpha,
you probably aren't 1. And if you're paying
someone else to teach you how to become
an alpha,
you're already
proving that you're not 1. You either are
a man or you're not, and that is
something you have to get from you. That's
something you have to find in here. You
have to be raised upon that. Or if
not, you have to dig deep down in
here. Yes. You can learn courses on how
to have more manly attributes and But that's
not what it's all about. Riding horses and
shooting arrows and, you know, all these other
things you see they do in these alpha
courses, camping and Yes. These are skills that
men should have, but that's not what it
means to be a man.
That's not what it means to be a
man. A man is someone who takes care
of his responsibilities.
Whether it's good or whether it's easy or
hard, a man takes care of his responsibilities.
He gets up every single day and goes
to work and does what he has to
do to take care of his family. That's
a man. A man is someone who keeps
his word. A man is someone who when
he has a problem with another person, he
goes directly to that person. He doesn't go
tell this brother that he has a problem
with that brother. He goes to that brother
and tells him I have a problem with
you. Let's sort it out.
These are manly qualities that we don't see
in people anymore, which we will have.
I I know I just said if you
needed to have a course about man initiative,
probably not 1, but we,
we need help. I will be having for
youth and younger adults, a course on what
does it mean to be a man. Not
teaching you how to be a man. You
gotta decide to do that on your own.
But what does it mean to be a
man? What does it mean to be a
man? And hopefully, I'm gonna look for a
sister who can do that the same with
with sisters because I will never think to
tell another woman how to be a woman.
I don't have that I don't have that
skill set, but we will find someone possibly
inshallah to Ana. But we will have that
course soon inshallah.
It's time for
the Adhan. Insha'Allah, remember, I'll announce it after
Isha again, but the schedule will switch up
next week. The courses don't change, just the
schedule inshallah.
