As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger
of Allah.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger
of Allah.
Come to Prayer.
Come to Prayer.
Allah is the greatest.
Allah is the greatest.
There is no god but Allah.
Dear Muslims, my topic today deals with an
issue that should be of extreme importance and
relevance to every single one of us.
And I mean here, the rise of yet
another wave of Islamophobia.
We have seen this in the last 20
years in multiple surges, multiple waves.
And every time it comes with a new
unexpected reality, every time we have to brace
for what's gonna happen, and every time it
goes away, and then to be followed again
and again.
And in the last few weeks, we've seen
a resurgence of blatant lies, misrepresentations, fear-mongering
amongst the western masses about our faith and
about our tradition.
And subhanAllah, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions
this in the Qur'an.
Allah mentions it in the Qur'an.
1,440 years ago, Allah said, وَلَتُبْلَوُنَّ فِي
أَمْوَادِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ You are gonna be tested in
your wealth and in your lives and families.
And you're gonna hear
a lot of irritation, a lot of nuisance.
You're gonna hear painful things from those outside
of our faith.
They're gonna say things about you that are
not true.
They're gonna lie, they're gonna smear, they're gonna
stereotype, they're gonna caricature.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, وَإِن
تَصْبِرُوا وَتَتَّقُوا فَإِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمٍ أُمُورٍ You
must be patient and you must have taqwa
of Allah.
That is the essence of righteousness.
So, my dear brothers and sisters, what can
we do?
And what are some of the manifestations of
this reality?
And what is our role and responsibility?
These are some of the topics that inshaAllah
ta'ala we're going to be addressing.
As for its manifestation, subhanAllah, one of the
most obvious manifestations is the media representation or
I should say the misrepresentation of our faith.
The creating of stereotypes, the creating of caricatures,
the creating of fear mongering, out of nothing,
an entire controversy is created.
Just look at for example, the simple reality
of one of the leaders of our lands,
the Muslim prime minister of Syria, when he
refused to shake hands with a female politician.
How much the media went into full time
overdrive, creating, fomenting hatred.
And yet subhanAllah, they're talking about women's rights,
they're talking about the fact that this is
a man who's not shaking hands with a
woman.
How about the previous leader whom they themselves
supported and whose own forces perpetrated the most
heinous violations against tens of thousands of women?
All of this is silent.
Not a single word to that reality.
But when a Muslim man out of his
own akhlaq and dignity does not want to
touch another woman, an entire firestorm is created.
Look at what is happening right now on
social media.
One of the most or maybe even the
wealthiest person alive today who owns various social
media platforms.
That person, the multi-billionaire, is now actively
engaged in spreading lies about our religion.
Fear mongering, not just in America, across the
globe.
Tweeting and retweeting absolute lies about religion of
Islam and about Muslims.
The reality is that Muslims in western majority
lands are no more or less guilty than
any other faith of the crimes of the
most of mankind.
And yet, the western media portrays Muslims as
being disproportionately responsible for the crimes against other
people.
One of the things happening in Europe, many
of us in America are not aware, and
that's good for us we're not aware, but
in Europe there is this fomenting going on
of Muslim gangs, of Muslim gangs that are
taking advantage of other people, that are taking
vulnerable women and grooming them, the grooming gangs
of England.
This is front page news for the last
three weeks.
And tweets are being perpetrated, blatant lies that
Muslims are disproportionately responsible for grooming young underage
women.
And the fact to the matter is that
this is a blatant lie.
There's not a shred of truth.
Statistics say that Muslims are just as much
guilty as their percentages in the broader society.
No more, maybe even a little bit less.
Yes, there are bad Muslims out there.
We are not disproportionate doing crimes against the
rest of mankind.
But what is being portrayed, Muslims exclusively are
at the forefront.
So often blatant news is created where there's
not a shred of evidence.
For example, two weeks ago, a person who
was born in a Muslim family, of a
Muslim heritage, created or did an act in
Germany, and he drove into a crowd and
killed many people.
Without any verification, without any background, the fact
that that person had a Muslim name, immediately
a story was created.
Terrorist attack, this happens, that happens.
Turns out, this person, not only was he
not a Muslim, he was a murtad, he
was in fact an Islamophobe.
This person was in fact a Zionist.
And the reason why he attacked other people
in Germany, is that he said, you guys
are too soft against Muslims.
You guys are not harsh enough against Muslims.
And as soon as that manifesto came, as
soon as all of those tweets came, the
person who owns that social media platform, deleted
his account, so that you cannot see the
background of this person.
And again and again, last week there was
an attack in New Orleans.
We still don't understand who the person was,
what his motivation was.
Fact to the matter is, there are a
lot of unanswered questions, because this person is
unknown in the Muslim community.
But just because they have a Muslim name,
all of a sudden a story is created.
Nobody challenges.
We have no idea of this reality.
And all of us have to somehow collectively
respond, as if we are responsible, even if
one of our own did a crime.
Why is it that when mass shootings take
place, and invariably mass shooters are always, always
coming from the larger demographics of white Caucasian
males.
Why is it when a mass shooting takes
place, the rest of the male Caucasians don't
have to make a disclaimer, oh we have
nothing to do with that person.
And yet when it is a Muslim, all
of a sudden we are collectively made guilty.
And it goes on and on.
So without a doubt, we are facing yet
another wave of Islamophobia.
And Allah knows what's gonna happen with the
current presidency, and what is gonna happen in
the next few years.
And all of this leads to actual hate
crimes.
Alhamdulillah, in this last year, not as many
violent crimes has happened in the previous years.
However, multiple agencies have reported that minor crimes,
nuisances, irritations, or pushing or shoving, have increased
against Muslims in over 700%.
And as for violent, only a few cases
across this country.
In Canada, multiple incidents have happened.
Across Europe, this is happening as well.
And this is leading to legislation.
Multiple countries, not our country because we do
have a constitution that makes that difficult.
But other countries are getting involved in actually
legislating specific acts that are meant to make
it difficult for Muslims to live their lives
in western lands.
So with all of this, brothers and sisters,
what must we do?
First thing, and this is the most difficult,
and this is a very awkward topic.
Before we seek to try to push back,
understand why this is happening.
Understand, because without understanding, without having the context,
without at least putting yourselves in the shoes
of the other, no matter how awkward that
is, you will not effectively be able to
counter the rise of misinformation.
So there are multiple motivations why Islamophobia finds
such large traction in the western world.
There are multiple psychological realities.
And when I state them, I'm not justifying.
I'm simply asking us to understand why.
Please understand I'm not defending.
I'm trying to make us understand some of
the fear, some of the unknown, some of
the stereotypes that find traction, they actually have
human emotions that we can empathize with.
This is not to justify, but you're not
gonna defend.
And you're not gonna be able to make
yourself somebody that is fully human in their
eyes until you know why they feel this
way.
Some of their motives are totally understandable.
And of those motives is the fear of
the unknown.
This is a logical and rational fear.
They don't know us.
We haven't interacted with them.
And so they believe the lies that they
are fed.
Not everybody who says something Islamophobic actually has
genuine hatred in their heart.
It could be misunderstanding.
It could be fear.
It could be that they wanna protect their
own families and their own societies.
And they have been told the lie.
And if you come and you act arrogant,
if you come and you act harshly, if
you come and you don't have an ounce
of empathy that they might actually have a
legitimate misunderstanding, you will only validate their stereotype.
You will only affirm what their misunderstanding is.
So understand that misrepresentation of Islam and limited
interactions that many non-Muslims have with us,
it allows them to feel this type of
misunderstanding against us.
And you know before I came to the
state of Texas, I lived in Tennessee which
is a very different state.
I lived there for a decade.
I was a professor at an institute where
many of the students had never met a
Muslim.
And my classes, many of them intro to
Islam, people would come, they had never met
a Muslim.
I taught 10 years there, hundreds of students.
I will tell you firsthand, this was again
15 years ago when America was going through
a wave of Islamophobia.
When legislation was being passed to ban Sharia
in 22 states, that's when I was teaching
in Tennessee.
It was a very different world frame.
Right after 9-11 by a few years,
I was there in Tennessee.
I'm telling you from firsthand experience, I taught
hundreds if not thousands of students.
And many of them, the majority of them,
they were genuinely believing that Islam and Muslims
are evil people because they never met somebody
that was a Muslim.
Because of Fox News, because of stereotypes, because
their families and friends had fed them these
lies.
And when they took my class, I had
people that were genuinely scared to sign up
intro to Islam.
They were scared because they didn't know what
would happen and I had to walk them
through.
But alhamdulillah, by the end of my semester,
alhamdulillah, every single person I taught without exception
had a positive attitude of Islam.
In fact, a number of them alhamdulillah converted
during those 10 years.
But the point is education, calmness, dedication, patience.
You're not going to allay their fears if
you are coming to them with arrogance, with
hatred.
You must empathize.
This is a person, he's never met a
Muslim, never heard of Islam.
And for 10, 15, 20 years, they have
been spoon fed a version of Islam that
is distance from reality.
When you come into the picture, rather than
diminish, rather than hate, rather than anger, show
empathy.
Understand this is a person, he doesn't know
any better.
Another reason why Islamophobia finds such large traction
in the people is more sinister.
And this is the more evil one.
There are people who know full well the
truth and yet they have an agenda.
And the reason I say this, not everybody
has an agenda.
Category 1 are good people, they just don't
know the truth.
Category 1 are innocent people, but they have
been fed lies.
Category 2 are not innocent people, they have
an agenda.
Our problem, we don't differentiate between category 1
and category 2.
And we treat everybody as if they have
an agenda.
And that's not the way forward.
Category 2 people are different than category 1.
The people who have an agenda, they are
far more nefarious.
They are genuinely evil people.
They know the truth.
They know Islam is like every other faith,
has a few bad apples, but the bulk
of Muslims are just like everybody else.
In fact, they're better than other religious faith.
They know this, but they misrepresent intentionally.
Why would anybody do this?
Multiple reasons.
So under category 2, you have multiple reasons.
The worst of them, and this is the
one we have to deal with at the
broader scale, the upper echelons of society, the
movers and shakers that are doing this.
They do it for political agenda.
They have political agenda.
And the classic example that we all understand
right now, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
By intentionally misrepresenting Muslims as being violent, they
know Muslims are not violent.
They know that the Palestinians are being persecuted.
They know that the religion of Islam is
a peaceful religion.
They know this, but they have a propaganda
war they have to fight.
They have a propaganda war, and they have
to sell to their own peoples that their
country which is Israel is the positive country.
How can they do that?
One of the ways is by exaggerating these
statistics.
Oh, Muslims are all grooming gangs, Muslims are
this, Muslims are violent.
One of the ways is by constantly creating
these stereotypes, caricatures, and spoon-feeding people so
that the presumption comes, Oh, okay, Islam is
a terrorist religion.
This is an agenda, and we cannot treat
these types of people the same as we
treat category 1.
There are also agendas that are a little
bit less sinister, but there are agendas nonetheless.
Of the agendas is just blatant sensationalism, i
.e., drama sells.
And if you have a newspaper, it's not
that you hate Muslims or hate others.
Having a sensationalist title will sell more copies
of the newspaper.
And so to say, Oh, ISIS attack, or
Muslim attack, or terrorist attack.
It's not a matter of they necessarily hate
us, it's just it's gonna sell more papers.
So they're gonna put something like that.
That's why it's called clickbait.
You're gonna click on the...
It's like a bait for you, like a
fish being attracted bait.
It's clickbait.
Understand there's agendas that are monetary, that when
you have a story that's gonna bring people
to your website, it's gonna sell news, it's
gonna create more money for you.
So understand these are also different...
different, if you like, motivations.
Of course, there's another motivation as well.
And this is common amongst politicians.
And politicians in particular, there's so much going
on that is negative for them.
So they like to create another negative story.
So that the attention goes to that story
rather than them.
This is called scapegoating, right?
The politician is a disaster.
The politician has so many issues.
The politician has personal scandals.
Well, what's the easiest way to get rid
of all of that attention?
Just create a story about something that is
nothing to do with the politician and make
that story up and center.
And then the politician might even come and
pretend that he's the one saving society from
this scapegoat that they have created.
So understand there are sinister agendas.
Some of them are political, some of them
are monetary, and some of them are simply
just wanting to scapegoat to get off the
attention.
My point is we as Muslims have to
separate between the two.
And generally speaking, most of the people in
your offices, your colleagues, your co-workers, people
in society, they're not in category 2, they're
category 1.
And because they're category 1, you cannot treat
them the way you might want to treat
somebody in category 2.
You cannot have hatred and fear and arrogance.
You need to empathize, put yourself in their
shoes.
Imagine if for 15-20 years, the only
news you got about another ethnicity, another religion
was negative.
How would you view that religion?
You are also human, you would also misunderstand.
In fact, I have to be honest with
you as a person who has explored and
gone to the world, I myself have realized
that so many things I didn't understand until
I go there myself and see the reality.
The way that our media portrays, for example,
other countries.
The way that our media portrays other societies.
Until you travel there, and you see, oh,
it's not like that.
Even I myself have gone to multiple lands.
The way that our news media portrays them,
it's very different than how they actually are
when you go there.
So my point is we are also human,
and we can also fall prey to misunderstanding.
So now that we understand some of the
psychological realities of why Islamophobia exists, let us
now get to the crux of the matter.
What should we as Muslims do to respond
to Islamophobia?
And again, much can be said.
First and foremost, understand the way to respond
is not by moaning and groaning and whining
and complaining and calling out people.
No, this is not dignified.
This khutbah is meant for education.
It's meant for us to be aware.
The Prophet shallallahu alaihi wasallam never once complained
to other people about Islamophobia.
The Prophet shallallahu alaihi wasallam never once whined,
astaghfirullah, and begged and pleaded.
That goes against who we are as Muslims.
We understand Islamophobia is a fact.
We understand it is historic.
Dear Muslims, if they lied about our Nabi
shallallahu alaihi wasallam, you don't think they're gonna
lie about me and you?
If they created a caricature of the best
human being, you think they're not gonna create
a caricature of me and you?
So understand this is a reality you have
to deal with.
And it will come over and over again.
I already explained, every one of us who's
above the age of 35, you have seen
two or three waves of Islamophobia in the
last 15 years.
It's never gonna stop.
So be dignified.
Don't become complaining and whining and be a
little child and throw a tantrum.
No.
Dignity will bring you much more credibility in
the long run and it is the prophetic
way.
Number two, respond with patience and wisdom.
I just quoted you the verse, literally the
verse about Islamophobia.
You're gonna hear lies and things that are
gonna hurt you.
Allah is saying it's gonna hurt you.
How painful is it when they say lies
about our Prophet shallallahu alaihi wasallam?
How painful is it when they caricature the
Quran?
How painful is it they take a verse
and they misinterpret it?
It hurts us.
Allah says, وَإِن تَصْبِرُوا وَتَتَّقُوا فَإِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ
عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ Show patience and be conscious of
Allah.
That is the right way forward.
Patience and wisdom and therefore respond with dignity.
Allah says in the Quran, اِدْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ
أَحْسَنُ السَيِّئَةِ Respond to siya with the best
of manners.
Respond to evil with the best of manners.
And if you do so, فَإِذَا الَّذِي بَيْنَكَ
وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيمٌ The one who
was your enemy will become your best friend.
Dear Muslim, you are the Muslim when a
non-Muslim is full of anger of Islam.
Don't treat him the way he's treating you
or else you are exactly the same in
this treatment.
You are the Muslim, exemplify Islam.
Show them Islam.
Not through speech, but through action.
Not through words, but through character.
The strongest way, listen to me carefully, to
defend Islam against the charges of the Islamophobes,
it is not via lectures.
It is not via khutbas.
It is not via durus.
It is not via coming to the masjid
and listening to me.
The ones full of Islamophobic hatred are not
sitting here.
The strongest way to respond to Islamophobia is
that every one of you interacts with other
people with the prophetic akhlaaq.
That is the best way.
Every one of you interacts with your friends,
your colleagues, your neighbors, your co-workers.
You are the ambassadors, not me.
I'm the one giving the khutba in the
masjid.
This is not where Islamophobia is.
This is a role where you will be
at the vanguard, not me.
You have a role to play, not your
shuyukh and scholars.
I'm just incentivizing you.
I'm just asking you to do.
But you are the real people who will
demonstrate what it means to be a Muslim.
And so, number two, the primary mechanism to
respond to Islamophobia is via your actions and
akhlaaq.
Number three, you must be educated as well
with regards to what is going on.
You must read, you must study, you must
know your own statistics.
When they come and say, oh, the majority
of violence is caused by Muslims.
When they say, oh, there's grooming gangs in
England.
When they say, most of the people killed
in America comes because of jihadist attacks.
This is blatant lies, complete lies.
And if you don't know any better, you
will not know what to say.
So, study, educate yourself, understand what is going
on.
And there are so many lectures and khutbas
and durus that can help you in this
regard.
But you will have to educate and know.
When they quote you something wrong, you must
respond with wisdom.
No, that's not true.
And quote the statistic, the grooming gangs you
mentioned, you can quote, oh, the home office
in England actually released a study.
And they demonstrated that actually statistically, the number
of Muslims or Asians that are perpetrating this
is less than their ethnic makeup in the
society.
i.e., they're not even represented equally, they're
less Muslims.
And the majority of the people that are
doing this are actually from other demographics.
If you don't know that statistic, how will
you defend against it?
And the final point, oh Muslims, and much
can be said here.
The final point in this regard is understand
that we as Muslims must unite together for
the greater good.
There is strength in unity.
And demographics plays a role here.
I have been saying this for years, and
I will continue to say this.
One of our biggest problems, we are dividing
amongst ourselves over the most petty of issues.
We're having refutations and hatred because of our
ethnic backgrounds, even because of our trivial ideological
backgrounds.
We pray differently, we have slightly different understandings
of aqeedah and fiqh and whatnot.
Even if that is the case, for the
greater good of the country we live in,
in order to battle Islamophobia, we have to
find a mechanism of coming together for the
greater good.
وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى Come together and help
one another in birri and taqwa.
وَتَوَاصُوا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصُوا بِالصَّبْرِ They're advising each other
with the truth, and advising each other in
patience.
Come together as one ummah.
We do have strength in numbers, in every
single land we live in, in the western
world.
If we can only be united in one
vision, of preaching Islam in the best of
manners, wallahi it would have a trickle down
effect to the rest of the globe.
And of course, before I finish the first
khutbah, there must also be a final point
of the spiritual level.
And that is, how can we possibly forget
that in order to succeed, we must have
a relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
We must have that ikhlas, that taqwa.
We must have sabr and dua.
We must have a personal ibadah and tawakkul.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reminds us in
the Qur'an to constantly turn to Him.
And He tells us that, when the Prophet
ﷺ was hurt by what the people are
saying, He says to the Prophet ﷺ, وَاعْبُدْ
رَبَّكَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينَ Continue to worship Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala until the certainty of
death comes to you.
Remember you will never succeed unless you have
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So turn to Allah, make dua to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala to allow you to
be an ambassador on behalf of His faith.
Make dua to Allah that you can be
a role model for your friends and colleagues
and the people around you so that inshaAllah
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala put together every
single one of us will make a dent
in this new Islamophobic campaign.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless me
and you with the Qur'an.
And may He make us of those who
His verses they understand and applies halal and
haram throughout our lifespan.
Ask Allah's forgiveness, you as well ask Him
for His forgiveness and the Rahman.
Alhamdulillah al-wahid al-ahad, al-samad alladhi
lam yalid walam yulad, walam yakun law kufwan
ahad wa ba'du.
Dear Muslims, given the weather circumstances that we
find ourselves in, some practical points for us
to benefit from.
First and foremost, we thank Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala who has blessed us that in
spite of all that is happening, alhamdulillah we
are safe and sound over here.
Can you imagine what is happening around the
world?
There are places where fires are rampaging, against
so many innocent people.
There are places in the world where bombs
are falling.
There are places in the world where this
cold weather, they don't have the mechanism to
protect themselves.
Our own Muslim brothers and sisters around the
world, in Palestine we have read that, a
'udhu billah, babies have frozen to death because
they don't have the mechanism to protect themselves.
And so as we are slightly inconvenienced because
that's all that it is.
As we are slightly inconvenienced by the weather
we find ourselves in.
Remember, there are so many others around the
globe who do not have the mechanism, the
wherewithal in order to protect themselves.
Every time we see a small calamity in
our lives, we should thank Allah that it
is not a bigger calamity.
We should thank Allah that He has given
us the means and the mechanisms to deal
with this calamity and make dua for those
that are suffering much more than us.
As well, we thank Allah for the beauty
of this religion and shari'ah.
Even though we made these announcements, we'll make
them again.
That of the beauty of our shari'ah,
as one of the principles of fiqh states,
when the situation becomes difficult, the shari'ah
becomes easy.
This is a rule of fiqh.
When the situation becomes difficult, the shari'ah
becomes easy.
This is one of the golden rules.
The fiqh has multiple golden rules or five
major rules.
One of these major rules is, the more
difficult situation is, the easier the shari'ah
becomes.
And of course, this is manifested in so
many different ways.
When there's no water, we do tayammum.
When it is freezing cold and we cannot
do ghusl, we are allowed to do tayammum,
even if there's water.
And even right now, when the roads are
full of slush, when you cannot drive safely,
we all make a judgment call here.
And if we feel that it is not
safe for us to drive, if we feel
there is a possibility of an accident, then
the shari'ah has allowed that we remain
at home.
And instead of jum'ah, we can pray
dhuhr.
This is something confirmed in the Qur'an,
in the sunnah, in multiple times in the
seerah, it would rain severely.
And when it would rain in Medina, it's
not life-threatening, you're not gonna die if
you walk in the rain, but it is
a very major inconvenience.
The roads will be full of mud, it's
not easy to go.
And in that inconvenience, the Prophet shallallahu alaihi
wasallam told Bilal, when you give the adhan,
then instead of saying, hayya alas-salah, change
it.
Instead of come to prayer, change it.
And say, pray in your houses, or when
they were traveling, pray in your tents.
Don't come to the masjid, pray in your
houses.
This is something the shari'ah came with,
when the situation was not life and death,
it was simply a major inconvenience to come.
So imagine now when, it is not safe
for everybody to drive right now, you make
a judgment call.
And this is completely between you and Allah.
People have different cars, people have different driving
skills, people have different levels of risk tolerance.
You make an honest assessment, and then between
you and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, you
have a clear conscious that, oh Allah, I'm
not feeling comfortable driving right now, I'm gonna
pray in my house, and that is completely
acceptable.
And all of this to manifest the wisdom,
and the perfection, and the mercy of Allah.
As Allah says, وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ
مِنْ حَرَجٍ Allah has not made this religion
difficult.
The religion is not difficult, the religion is
easy, and we thank Allah for the ease
in this religion.
