Aliyahu wa sakhi j'mayin.
Inshallah, we'll continue in the seerah of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. We're reaching a
point in the seerah of the prophet sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam where the Muslim Ummah is
actually becoming
a state, is actually becoming a political entity,
and now
they will be starting to make decisions
that will not just strengthen an individual, but
will actually create a system.
And
in many ways, we follow that system that
was created all the way
of the period of that we're going to
be talking about now.
You see, we have about 8 years left
of the life of the
prophet to cover, and if you realize up
till now,
we are discussing
different incidents of the seerah of the prophet
but we are not really discussing anything that
we really see of Islam today.
We're just discussing different different stories,
scattered pieces,
but now the next 8 years,
everything comes together and we start to understand
what we see today from Islam,
and that is a system.
That isn't just like, okay, one person individually
doing something or another person individually doing something,
but it's rather a complete system, and that's
what we see. So last time we discussed
that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, he changed the
qiblah for the believers
from facing Baytul Maqdis to facing
the Kaaba.
And
now that this happened, we can't just say
that, okay, it just happened and that's it.
But there's a significance to this and there's
symbolism in this
that now that the prophet
and the believers are facing the Kaaba,
it's basically symbolizing that sooner or later, the
Muslims are gonna get control of Mecca once
again, and that the Muslims are gonna start
to become the leaders of the Mecca because
you don't face
a prophet of Allah does not face something
except that Allah will
give him victory in that. So we see
that the prophet
is
basically giving that,
okay, there's going to be a victory.
Now one of the major things that happens
now that is the first
manifestation
of that victory,
as we all know, is the Battle of
Badr.
But before Badr happened, there were so many
different incidents that led to Badr, and today
we just want to kind of cover what
were all those incidents that led to them,
and we see the meticulous planning of the
Prophet
throughout every single
period, throughout every single step he's planning, and
he is taking his due diligence, and he's
doing whatever he can
and not just saying that, Oh, I'm a
prophet of Allah, so whatever happens, Allah will
protect me. Rather,
he has his complete faith in Allah but
he is doing whatever he can to make
sure
that he uses all the means available to
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
So we see that
number 1, we recognize that up till now,
when we covered the Makkan phase, we realized
that the Quraysh, they have taken all the
wealth of the Muslims.
They have confiscated their lands.
They have basically
driven them out of Makkah without anything.
And so the Quraysh have become quite rich.
They have a lot of wealth. And remember,
we discussed in the very beginning
that the Quraysh only had two means
of basically investing their wealth, of growing their
wealth, and sustaining their economy.
It wasn't something within home. It wasn't something
that they basically got because they stayed in
Makkah.
But rather, it grew and grew and grew
because they used to do 2 business trips.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us about these
2 business trips in Surah Quraish.
Right?
In winter, they used to go to
Yemen, and in summer, they used to go
to
Sham, to Syria, and they used to invest
this wealth. And as we've discussed before,
that
going to Syria, going to Sham, you're basically
going north,
and Madinah also comes in north. So in
order for you to go to Sham, you
have to pass by Madinah.
So now their economic development,
their growth, their investment, everything depends on passing
through Madina.
And although the Muslims so far,
they have not really done anything
to really, you know,
show that, okay, we're going to battle against
you. Now slow and slowly and slowly, the
Muslims are going to start to show that.
And that's because if you don't,
the people are gonna think you're weak and
they're gonna continuously
attack you. So when we talk about
there are 2 incidents that happened with
One is
and one is
So the one that we all know about,
the major battle that the Muslims won and
all of that, That is Badr al Kubra,
the major battle of Badr, but there's also
the and we need to basically understand that
as well. And the point of understanding that
is so that we may realize that the
prophet
isn't just planning in vain,
but and isn't just planning because he has
some evil plans,
but he's planning because there's active
plans going against Islam, going against Muslims and
if they don't do anything against it, if
they don't show their strength and their power,
then slowly, slowly, this is going to increase.
So
when it comes to Badr,
first of all,
what is Badr?
Badr is actually a name of a person.
His name was Badr
and he was a person who dug up
a well
in a specific field.
And people started to benefit from that well
well and everything, so the whole entire area
started to get to know by that area
that that is
Badr. The whole area is Badr. Many of
you may have gone to it. It's right
between
Mecca and Madinah. It's actually closer to Madinah,
maybe about an hour and 15 minutes or
so drive from there. But it's right between
Mecca and Madinah closer to Madinah. And, again,
it's just the name of a person, but
the whole area got to know to be
known because of this person.
Now
this area,
the Badr the first incident that happened, the
Badr al Surah, the small incident of Badr
actually doesn't have anything to do with the
major battle of Badr. The only reason why
it's known as Badr is because it happened
in this area. So because of that, it's
known as that. But what actually happened? What
happened is one of the allies of Purush,
one of the allies of Purush, they came
into Madinah
or to the outskirts of Madinah, and they
basically
stole
some of the camels from the Muslims,
and they also killed some people. Right? The
prophet
head out with about 70 of his companions
to reach up to these people, but of
course, there were only very few in numbers
and they basically,
they basically went away and the Muslims were
not able to catch up to them. So
this is basically,
the whole incident. As you can see, it
doesn't really have much to do
with the actual battle of Badr.
What happens is when this is now happening
that people can just come into Madinah,
take everything, it kinda has this thing that
okay the Muslims are weak. You can go
and do whatever you want, however you want.
And also the Muslims are not aware. And
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam teaches us
over here that, no, a Muslim must be
aware, a Muslim must be active,
a Muslim must know
whereabouts
of everything and be using the asbaab to
protect themselves. So the Prophet
makes a group. This time, in this period,
he makes multiple different groups to go out
and scout, to go out and get the
information, to go and see what's going on.
And one of the major things that happens
over here is the
is the expedition
called
And Nakla is actually a place all the
way close to Makkah. What happened is the
Prophet he
gets about 8 of his companions,
and he writes a letter. He says that,
I want you guys to go towards this
direction,
towards Mecca, and here's a letter.
Don't open up this letter until you guys
reach that place.
And so this letter, they have now, the
Amir of this Jahish is Abdullah bin Jahash.
He's a cousin of the prophet
The small group of about 8 people, they
start to go towards
Makkah. When they reach Nakla,
they open up this ladder to see what's
going on. And the Prophet
tells them, not
before a place, telling them that I want
you to go all the way up till
the outskirts,
and all the way the outskirts of Mecca,
and I want you to get some information
of what the Quraysh are up to. What
are they planning? What's going on?
And I don't want you to go into
any battle. I don't want you to go
into any arms, anything like that. And another
thing is, I want you to make this
completely voluntary.
So ask all of the people who are
in this expedition,
if any of them want to leave, let
them leave. None of them actually have to
participate in this. So Abdul Jabez,
he reads this, and he said that we
are instructed to go all the way close
to Makkah.
Go all the way by and basically get
the information.
If any of you want to go home,
you guys can go home. And if you
guys want to participate, you can participate.
At this, all the companions are like, we
will participate.
Now, the
every 2 companions, they were sharing 1 camel.
And
one of the other companions,
one time they were sleeping and when they
got up, their camel was taken by somebody.
So they basically tell the rest of the
army, the rest of the expedition, a group
of 6 people, you guys continue.
We won't, but you guys continue. We will
look for another camel, and once we get
something, we will come with you. So now
the rest of the Muslims, they start to
go. When they're going, they see that there
is a small caravan,
few camels filled with all types of goods
and everything
and this is basically
the wealth of the Muslims.
They're coming
and this is a golden opportunity for them
to basically attack because there's only a few
people, they can get all the wealth and
it will be something,
you know, the the first time that the
Muslims are actually getting their wealth back. And
so it's a really good opportunity,
but they're actually in a very severe
two conditions. Number 1, they're very close to
Makkah.
Right? Number 2, and which is the most
important thing, or actually number 1, you could
even say, even the prophet of Allahu alaihi
wa sallam told them that, listen. This is
just to go and get intelligence.
It's not about fighting. But the Muslims see
this as a golden opportunity.
They see this as like, okay. You know
what? We can actually
benefit the Muslims through this if we get
all this wealth and everything.
So they're in this confused situation, and what
makes it very confusing actually
is that it's the last day of Rajab.
And the Rajab is one of the
one of the sacred months, the Quraysh and
the even the,
they still believed in the 4 months to
have sanctity,
to be sacred. You're not allowed to fight
in this. You're not allowed to do anything
during this time.
Any type of battle, any type of blood
shedding, anything. The Muslims the the Puris till
this time consider
the Haram,
right, where the is, where the Kaaba is,
all of that to be a sacred place,
and they considered the 4 months to be
sacred as well. Now the Muslims are confused
what what do we do. There's only a
few literally a few hours left because it's
about other time, it's gonna turn Maghrib, and
if they if it happens,
then, you know, it's gonna be outside it's
gonna be within the Rajab. And if this
happens,
this is gonna make such a case for
who? For the Quraysh to spread the word,
to make a negative PR,
public relations, to spread the news against the
Muslims and, oh my god, they did this,
and how horrible are they? They're the worst
people. They did this. They did that. And
they're really going to basically
create this negative image of the Muslims.
Unfortunately, the Muslims decided. They were like, you
know what? We're gonna take our chances. They
took our chances, and they killed the person.
They killed the person, and they took all
the
back to Madinah.
When they took the to Madinah, the Prophet
was so upset.
He said, I don't even wanna look at
this
We're not going to benefit from this. And
Abdullah ibn Jairus radiAllahu anhu is like, it
was the hardest days of his life,
because it's almost the prophet
is so disappointed
that I told you clearly
that you are going to just go get
intelligence, just go get information.
There's nothing about going and, you know, doing
anything to, you know, attack or anything like
that.
And
the Muslims did that. Abdullah bin Jahish radiAllahu
anhu is like, those were the darkest days.
I didn't know what to do.
Right? It says that the prophet isn't
talking to me, nobody I I just feel
the most guilty person alive.
And they felt like this until Allah
revealed an ayah.
Revealed an ayah talking about the Quraysh,
that you guys are talking about
killing?
You guys are creating
You guys are creating
such
chaos and corruption
that you have kicked people out of their
house. You have occupied their place. You have
taken their wealth. You have done all of
that. This is much worse than death. It's
and killing itself.
And so when this comes and the Abdullah
bin Jahash radiAllahu 1 who's basically relieved
out of this, you know, guilt
that he's holding because he thinks that he
has done such a sin that he won't
be forgiven, but Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, he
reveals the ayah and Abdullah bin Jahashrul the
Allah one who is freed of this. So
we see that You see, an incident happened
to the Muslims. The prophet didn't
just say, okay. Let it happen.
Rather,
he waited.
He said, I'm going to send different expeditions,
different small small groups, a group to south,
a group to north, all of these different
groups because we have to make sure that
we are prepared.
We know what's going on, how it's going
on, and that is exactly what they did.
Also, now what's happening is
another
small
expedition and that is called.
And what happens over here is that the
Muslims,
again, as I said, have lot their all
of their wealth is locked up in Mecca.
And what do the Muslims do now? The
Muslims take all this wealth and they send
it to Sham, they send it to Syria
so they could invest it. So that this
way, they can actually
go, get different trading goods, come back and
sell. So the Prophet
finds out about this, and he finds out
that this is the biggest caravan that the
Quraysh have ever had. It's 1,000 camels.
There are this 1,000 camels, if you do
the calculation today, it's worth more than $5,000,000.
If you are able to bring this money
into to Madinah,
this will have 2 very important
influences.
Number 1, the economy of the Quraysh
will cripple.
And if this happens,
they no longer will continuously think about attacking
the Muslims
because till now, they have spared no effort
in attacking the Muslims. And the wealthier they
get, the more they're going to intensify
their efforts against the Muslims.
So this is one thing. The second is
when this wealth comes to Madinah,
this will allow the Sahaba to become a
little bit independent.
This will allow the Sahaba to take a
breath.
It will allow them to get their wealth
back. So the Prophet
he hears about this. When he hears about
this,
that this expedition is coming, this is going
this this caravan is coming and it's going
towards shab, the Prophet
at this point,
he talks to his companions. Now understand one
thing, understand the dynamics of Madinah.
The dynamics of Madinah
is such that you still have some people
who are not Muslims.
You still have people who have their alliance
with the Quraysh.
You still have Munafiqoon,
hypocrites.
So the
prophet does not just make a general announcement
and says that, alright guys, we're going and
we're going for this exact plan or anything
like that. It says that the prophet
actually did not announce
where he's going, why he's going, anything like
that. He just said, Guys, we gotta go
for a very important matter. Whoever is ready
right now, we have to leave.
And some of the companions are like, Oh,
prophet of Allah, we have our camels and
stuff somewhere else. Let us go get it.
They're like, no. No. No. No. You nobody's
going anywhere.
Whoever is ready right now has their camel,
everything is ready, we are leaving right now.
And so they head out. You see, this
shows us number 1,
the intention of the prophet
was not to fight.
The intention of the prophet
was
not to fight or anything like that because
he's just going to intercept the caravan
so that this way, they may get some
of their wealth back. And this caravan is
being headed by Abu Sufyan, and he has
about 40 bodyguards, but to be honest, for
a 1000 camels, that's not enough, and this
was a golden opportunity for the Muslims.
Now the Muslims starts to head out.
They have no idea.
Later on, the prophet tells
them what the reasoning for this was. And
so the prophet
tells them what the reasoning was, but unfortunately,
at this point, Abu Sufyan has already found
out, and he has taken another route and
the Muslims missed them.
The Muslims missed them, the Muslims were not
able to get that caravan, they were not
able to get this.
But what we learned from this is that
number 1, look at the meticulous planning of
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. Number 2,
the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam didn't just
leave the kuffar and the, you know, the
the the people to keep on attacking and
no action done.
He sent
out
he sent out expeditions such as that of
Nakla.
He sent out different companions. And even now
when there's an opportunity,
he goes out and tries to benefit from
this opportunity.
Then
we see that even though the prophet
comes back and they don't really get anything
in this, we have to understand, he goes,
he makes some alliances with some tribes and
anything, but the planning that they went with,
it did not happen. And it goes to
show us something, something very important,
and that is look, the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam, even though he's a prophet,
it's not that every single minute of his
life he got a miracle.
It's not that every single time he got
a victory, okay, you won in this, you
get whatever you want. It wasn't like that.
And we have to understand that even in
our life, it's not always going to go
our way.
It's not always going to be the way
we plan.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the best
of planners.
If he's allowing the prophet salallahu alaihi wa
sallam to go through all of that struggle
at the end not to achieve the, the
intended outcome,
then we should understand that even for us,
when we go through that, we should not
give up. And this then leads on to
the major battle of Badr that, inshallah, we
will cover next week what happened in the
major battle of Badr because that was the
turning point for the Muslims.
That is when the Muslims actually get strength.
The world finds out about them. The people
who are not believing in Madinah, they begin
to believe. The they
get weakened. The Quraysh, they get weakened. And
that is when we see
the system of Islam
being established
and we benefit from that system till today.
So up till now, it's all background background
background information
and starting with the major battle of Badr,
that's when see major developments. So inshallah, we
will cover that next week. May Allah give
us the ability to understand.
