Yasir Khan – Jummah Khutbah With Asl DonT Be Too Quick To Judge
AI: Summary ©
AI: Transcript ©
Alhamdulillah, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given
us such a religion that the judgment only
belongs to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
We humans are born with a judgmental sense
that we like to judge people according to
what they do or how they have been
or how they look.
But in Islam, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is the only one who can judge and
other than that, we cannot.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala teaches us throughout
the Qur'an through the different narratives of
the anbiya.
And he teaches us through the sayings of
the Prophet ﷺ.
And he also teaches us through the seerah
of the Prophet ﷺ in the lives of
the companions that we cannot judge anyone.
Only Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala can.
We may think that somebody looks very pious,
somebody looks very good and that this person,
if it was up to us, we will
give him the ticket to Jannah right now.
And at the same time, we may think
that somebody is a very big sinner and
that this person does not deserve any mercy
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala whatsoever.
But at the same time, we see throughout
history that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has
shown us the other side.
Somebody might be pious their whole entire life,
but the end is different.
And somebody might go through struggles and tortures
throughout the whole life, struggling to stay away
from sin.
But then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, He
changes their life.
And so today, I want to specifically focus
on this topic because it's one of the
diseases of our community that we tend to
judge people to hold them for what they
have done and not let go.
When Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, the creator
of this being is able to forgive and
let go of somebody's past, then what makes
us hold somebody accountable?
What makes us think that this person cannot
be guided or this person cannot be forgiven?
This is a very important thing that we
need to focus on as a community because
this is one of those things that creates
division.
And we may think that that division is
not a big deal, but that exact division
is contributing to why today we may not
see the Muslims in such a great condition.
We want our voices to be heard in
White House, in Washington DC, in the United
Nations.
But it starts off right here with every
single person's heart, cleaning his heart from any
malice, enmity or negativity towards a Muslim brother.
And it starts off as a community that
we do not hold things against each other,
rather we look for the positivity in everything.
The Prophet ﷺ wants us to change our
mindset that even if somebody has the worst
past, even if somebody is involved in the
worst sins possible, but that person has a
potential.
Because the Prophet ﷺ compared, and I'll say
not even compares figuratively, but he actually says,
الناس معادن That people are like mines.
He calls people mines.
What type of mines?
كمعادن الذهب والفضة They're like the mines of
gold and silver.
Today, if somebody was to get a mine
of gold and silver, he found his success
of this world.
He has all the wealth that he could
imagine.
Saudi became Saudi because of the oil.
Countries became rich because of the different treasures
they find.
The Prophet ﷺ, he calls, what?
انسان He calls the people, he calls them
معادن, he calls them mines, like the mines
of gold and silver.
Then he said, خيارهم في الجاهلية The best
of them in the time of ignorance, in
their worst moments, in them being disconnected to
Allah ﷻ, خيارهم في الإسلام إذا فقه They
are going to be the best of people
once they get the proper understanding of this
deen.
So today you might see someone, you might
think that man, this person, he is involved
in so much bad that we put the
stamp on him as if this person is
going to go to Jahannam forever and done.
But let's stop for a moment and look
at people within our own history, who have
had past.
But when Allah ﷻ forgave them, they became
the best people on the earth.
And of them are the sahaba radiallahu anhu.
Some of the sahaba radiallahu anhu, for example,
Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, the son of Abu
Jahl, who was the right hand man of
his father, who is known as the Fir
'aun of this ummah, who tortured Muslims like
no other, who made it a goal and
a mission to torture the Muslims and the
Prophet ﷺ.
But when Ikrimah radiallahu anhu, towards the very
end stage of the life of the Prophet
ﷺ, when he became Muslim, subhanAllah, he fought
in every battle for Islam.
And he said that this is the only
way I can make up for all the
blood that I've shed from the Muslims.
We hear the story that there was a
sahabi who was on the battleground, he was
dying, he needed water, and he wanted to
drink something.
And somebody brought him water and he hears
somebody else yearning, and somebody else calling for
water.
And so he goes, he's like, no, go
give the water to my brother.
And that person is like, no, go give
it to the next one.
They're preferring each other over themselves.
We hear this story, many of us have
heard this story.
Who is this person?
Who is the first person the water was
offered to?
It was Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl radiallahu anhu.
Yes, he was assisting every effort against Islam.
But when he became Muslim, all of that
was done.
And he looked positive.
The person who killed the uncle of the
Prophet ﷺ, Wahshi ibn Haram, he caused the
Prophet ﷺ so much pain that the Prophet
ﷺ would tell him that, don't sit in
front of me because it causes me pain,
sit to the side.
Even then the Prophet ﷺ forgave him, Allah
forgave him.
And Wahshi became such that he went on
to kill Musaylimah ibn al-Kazzab, the false
prophet that emerged at that time and claimed
to be a prophet.
Wahshi ibn Haram went on to kill him.
And a more example that you guys might
already know, is who?
Is Umar radiallahu anhu.
Umar radiallahu anhu was a staunch enemy of
Islam.
He would beat up a slave girl to
the point where he says, مَا تَرَكْتُكِ إِلَّا
مَلَالَةً I do not leave beating you except
that I'm bored and tired of beating you.
That's how much he would be beating them.
One day when the companions were traveling from
Mecca to Ethiopia to Habasha, Layla, one of
the Sahabiah, she sees Umar radiallahu anhu.
And Umar asked, where are you going?
And she said, you guys are torturing us
so much that we have to leave our
town and go somewhere else.
And Umar radiallahu anhu is like, really?
Have the situation gotten this bad?
When later her husband comes, she says that
Umar became really soft.
And her husband laughs and says, really?
Are you hopeful that Umar is going to
become Muslim or something?
Wallahi, the donkey of ibn al-Khattab will
accept Islam before Umar does.
Wallahi, the donkey, Himar ibn al-Khattab will
accept Islam before Umar radiallahu anhu does.
That was his reputation.
That's how people knew.
People thought that there was no hope.
There was no hope for this guy of
how much he used to torture the Muslims.
To top it off, the one day he
takes his sword and says, today I'm going
to go and I'm going to kill the
Prophet ﷺ.
Na'udhu billah.
But subhanallah, look at who he becomes.
When he left his past, when he turned
to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, when he
said that, that's it.
I am changing my life.
I am not going to look back.
Subhanallah, he becomes the right hand man of
the Prophet ﷺ.
He becomes the second khalifa.
And he becomes one where in his reign
Islam spread to all over the world.
If it was left to the judgment of
the humans, then they would have seen the
donkey of Khattab accepting Islam before Umar radiallahu
anhu does.
But when you leave it to the judgment
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, you will
see how every single person is a mind.
How every single person has tremendous potential.
So today, I call on every single person,
let's leave aside our judgments.
We don't know.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows the reality.
Let's not put ourselves in the position of
Allah.
Let's not put ourselves in the position to
be judging others.
Because if we are judging others, we are
putting our own selves at risk.
You would be shocked to see people who
have great lifestyle and everything, but what happens
to them?
One of the cousins of the Prophet ﷺ,
the cousins of the Prophet ﷺ, Ubaidullah ibn
Jahsh.
He was one of the first people to
accept Islam before Umar radiallahu anhu.
He was so strong in his faith, that
he left Makkah to go all the way
to Ethiopia, to go to Habasha.
And over there, he converted to Christianity and
passed away like that.
You cannot be certain that today you being
in this masjid, that today you might have
a dhari, a beard this big and a
topi and all of that.
You cannot be certain that you have gained
the ticket to Jannah.
And you cannot be certain that the person
who might be out there committing zina, that
that's a person of Jahannam.
Leave this to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
This is not your job, this is not
my job.
If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is willing
to forgive and let go of the sins
of other people, why aren't we letting go
of the sins of other people?
Why are we calling upon their past?
Why are we reminding them of what they
did?
And so we as Muslims, if we want
to be united, we have to go back
to the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ.
A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and
said, O Prophet of Allah, I am pregnant
because I have fornicated.
And the Prophet ﷺ, she's like, Prophet of
Allah, punish me.
The Prophet ﷺ said what?
He says, go until you give birth.
She comes back after giving birth.
The Prophet ﷺ said, go until the child
is able to eat.
Back and forth, back and forth, until the
day she comes and the punishment is done
and she passes away.
And the Prophet ﷺ is going to pray
the janazah.
Umar radiallahu anhu is like, O Prophet of
Allah, you're gonna pray her janazah while she
has fornicated?
What does the Prophet ﷺ say?
Wallahi, she has made such tawbah that if
it was to be distributed on the 70
people of Madinah, it would suffice all of
them today.
We don't know what somebody's tawbah may be.
We don't know the strength of anybody's tawbah.
But we know one thing, that if somebody
is trying to change, we must help them
through that process, not make it difficult for
them.
If somebody is trying to give up certain
way of life, we must help them with
that process.
And one of the main ways to help
them with that process is to think about
our own shortcomings, to think that we have
not gotten the ticket to jannah just yet.
My father was telling me a story once.
He said there was a great shaykh.
People would go and tell him, make dua
for us.
Anytime he was given the platform to make
dua, he always made one dua, and that
was for husni khatima, for the best ending.
Ya Allah, you give us a good ending.
Ya Allah, you allow us to die with
iman.
You allow us to die with faith.
This was the dua he always made.
He said the people one day asked him,
Shaykh, why is it that you're always just
making this one dua?
He said, I did not want to share
the secret, but since you guys insist.
My brother was a much greater scholar than
me.
People from all over the world came to
visit him.
But at the time of death, he denounced
Islam and he passed away like that.
And since then, I always make dua that
Ya Allah, you give us a husni khatima,
because it's not about how we're living today,
it's about how we are going to die.
When we start to think that we are
not perfect, that we have to earn our
jannah, that we don't know what's gonna happen
at the time of our death, we will
become easy with judging other people, and pointing
fingers at them, and bringing back their past,
and telling them that you're this and you're
that.
If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is saying,
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَقْبَلُ تَوْبَةَ عَبْدٍ مَا لَمْ يُغَرْغِرُ
That Allah is accepting the tawbah of His
servant, so long as the sakaratul mawd, so
long as the death throes does not come
to His throat.
Who are you and I to say that
this person is like this, and this person
is like that?
Yes, there is well-wishing.
Yes, there is an opportunity for you to
go, and an opportunity for you to give
dawah, an opportunity for you to bring the
person towards the right path, but not for
you to go, and for you to pinpoint,
and for you to look down upon, and
for you to start talking about it as
community, that this person this, and this person
that.
We don't know.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala teaches us
that we are خُلِقَ الْإِنسَانُ ضَعِيفًا عَجُولًا All
of these things, we are rushed, we are
weak, our knowledge is insufficient, and we are
rushing towards conclusions.
Allah teaches this in the Qur'an.
When Musa a.s. travels with Khidr a
.s. Khidr a.s. goes and kills a
person.
Musa a.s. is like, this doesn't make
any sense.
Why would you go kill a person?
But Khidr a.s. knew what Musa a
.s. did not know.
Khidr a.s. goes and makes a hole
in a boat for poor people.
And Musa a.s. is like, this doesn't
make any sense.
Why would you do this?
And what is Musa a.s.? He's like,
how are you doing this?
Khidr a.s. knew what Musa a.s.
did not know.
And so we should understand that our knowledge
is limited.
Our knowing of the situation of the other
person or whatever it may be, it is
limited.
So let's not be so judgmental.
Let's not rush towards that.
We see that even if Allah a.s.
forgives, this is the one quality we need
to bring into our life.
That how can you forgive?
How can I forgive?
How can we clean our hearts?
How can we make it that as if
nothing has happened?
Look at Yusuf a.s. What did his
brothers do to him?
His brothers threw him into a well, planned
to kill him.
But when Yusuf a.s. finally, he has
the throne, he has the kingdom, he has
the power.
What does Yusuf a.s. do?
Does he go and start telling them that,
Oh, you remember you did this to me?
You remember you did that to me?
None of that happened.
He forgives.
And so today if we forgive, Allah a
.s. will forgive us.
If we clean our hearts out of bull,
out of hatred towards other people, Allah a
.s. will help us with that.
And that is the...
You see one time the Prophet s.a
.w. was with his companions.
One companion came from a corner and he
has his shoes in his hand.
The Prophet s.a.w. before the person
comes, he said, the person who's gonna come
from that corner is from the people of
Jannah.
And then the next day, same thing.
The people coming, the person coming from that
corner is from the people of Jannah.
Same person.
Third day, same person.
The sahaba are shocked that what is so
great about this person?
What is it that he do that brought
him to that point where the Prophet s
.a.w. three times saying, that he is
from the people of Jannah.
And so, one of the companions, of course,
they're eager to earn Jannah.
He wants to know what he does.
He goes to him, like, can I stay
with you for a few nights?
He stays with him to see, because he
didn't see anything tremendous in his life.
Maybe in his private life, at home, at
night time, he might do something that's extraordinary.
So he stays with him at night.
The first night, he doesn't see anything special.
Second night, nothing special.
Third, when he sees that there's nothing special,
he's about to leave.
And he says, listen, the reason why I
came, I don't really have any issue or
anything.
The reason why I came is the Prophet
s.a.w. said this about you, that
you're from the people of Jannah.
I wanted to see what do you do
that is so special.
He says, there's nothing, you saw my life,
there isn't really much that I'm doing.
He said, okay, I'm gonna leave.
He's leaving, then he tells him, he's like,
wait, actually there's one thing, maybe it's because
of that.
He says, what's that one thing?
He says, before I go to sleep, I
clean my heart out of any type of
hatred and malice toward anyone.
Simple sunnah of the Prophet s.a.w.
These are the sunnahs of the heart that
we need to bring into our life.
There are certain actions that divides our community.
One of those actions is to be judgmental.
And the reason why we are judgmental is
because we assume, and the Prophet s.a
.w. tells us, اياكم والظن Be aware of
assumption.
فإن ظن أكذب الأحادي Because assumption is the
worst or the most severest of lies.
We assume, if we see someone, immediately we
put a stamp on him.
And so that is something that we see.
The Prophet s.a.w. says, I will
finish off with this hadith.
This hadith goes on, اياكم والظن فإن الظن
أكذب الأحادي Be aware of suspicion, because suspicion
is the worst of lies.
Then he goes on to say, ولا تحسسوا
And do not go and try to investigate
this matter.
ولا تجسسوا Do not try to go and
say, Okay, let me find out about this,
and let me find out about that, and
let me investigate this matter, and let me
investigate that matter.
What did this guy do?
How did he earn his money?
How did he spend that money?
ولا تباغضوا And do not create enmity or
hatred amongst each other.
ولا تدابروا And do not refrain from each
other or cut relationships with each other.
وكونوا عباد الله إخوانا And be, for the
sake of Allah, be brothers for each other.
And so just this hadith, if we were
to act upon it, if we were to
stay away from suspicion, if we were to
stay away from investigating matters, if we were
to stay away from spying on other people,
if we were to stay away from creating
hatred, if we were to stay away from
cutting ties with each other, this one hadith
is enough to change a whole entire society,
enough to change a whole entire community.
So we ask Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى to
allow us to really understand the sunnah of
the Prophet ﷺ beyond what we already understand,
but to understand that we are brothers.
We are all brothers.
We are all like one body.
We cutting each other's throats off, it's not
gonna do anything to us.
Let's stop judging other people.
مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمْ لَا يُرْحَمْ A person who
does not have mercy to others, Allah سُبْحَانَهُ
وَ تَعَالَى will not have mercy towards him.
Let's become merciful.
Let's become forgiving.
Let's become people who are not judgmental.
Let's become people who are not spying, people
who are not accusing, people who are not
suspicious, people who are not hating, people who
have clean hearts and they do not have
anything in their hearts towards other people.
These are the sunnahs that will create the
unity that will allow us to hear or
make our voices be heard all around the
world.
If we are united, there is no power
in the world that will stop our voices.
But if we are separated, our hearts have
nafra and hatred towards each other, it does
not matter how much we scream, nobody is
going to hear it.
May Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى give us the
ability to understand.
Indeed,
all praise is due to Allah.
We praise Him and ask His help and
ask His forgiveness.
And we seek refuge in Allah from the
evil of our souls and from the evil
of our deeds.
Whom Allah guides, no one can misguide him,
and whom He guides, no one can guide
him.
And we bear witness that there is no
god but Allah, alone, with no partner.
And we bear witness that Muhammad is His
servant and Messenger.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى says in His Glorious
Book after I seek refuge in Allah from
