In the book on certainty and reliance on
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, hadith number 80.
And this hadith is about finding tawakkul or
developing tawakkul and putting your trust and reliance
on Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in one
of the most vulnerable moments of your life,
or at least of your day and night.
And that moment when you are going to
sleep.
Because once you're asleep, you're in the hand
of whom?
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
As Allah mentioned in the Quran, He might
give the order for your soul to be
taken away or just keep it back there
for another day, and then another day, and
then another day.
But once you're asleep, this is it.
You're under the mercy of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, anything could happen.
Anything could happen.
So that's why in a moment like this,
I need protection from whom?
From Him subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And I need to put my trust and
tawakkul in Him, and my certainty and yaqeen
in His protection.
So let's see how the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam taught one of the sahabah radiyallahu
anhu adu'a to say that will provide
this for him inshallah.
Hadith Abi Umar al-Bura' bin Azib radiyallahu
firashika faqul.
He said to them, he was actually speaking
to somebody.
He says, whenever you go to bed, recite
the following.
Say these words.
Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajahtu wajhi ilayk,
wa fawwattu amri ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk,
raghbatan warahbatan ilayk, la malja wala manja minka
illa ilayk.
Amantu bikitabika alladhi anzalt, wa nabiyika alladhi arsalt.
He said, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, fa innaka
in mitta, mitta alal fitra.
In this hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam is telling him to recite the following.
O Allah, I have submitted myself to you.
I have turned my face to you, entrusted
my affairs to you, and committed my back
to you.
Out of desire for you and fear of
you, expecting your reward and fearing your punishment.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said after
that, there is no refuge and no place
of safety from you, but with you, I
believe in the book you have revealed and
the Prophet you have sent.
Then Allah's Messenger said, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,
that if anybody recited these words and died
that night, he would die in the true
religion, in the state of fitra.
In case he remains alive till morning, he
will obtain good and khayr.
in mitta min laylatika mitta alal fitra, wan
asbahta asabta khayra.
Ahaith Rawah al-Bukhari wa Muslim.
Another narration, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
said, If you go to bed, perform wudu'
for prayer, thumma ttaji' ala shiqbika al-ayman,
wa qul min dhalika al-hadith.
He said to him, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam,
if you go to bed, perform wudu' such
as the one you do for salah.
And then when you sleep, he said, lay
down on your right side.
And then he said this du'a.
So let's go back quickly to this du
'a inshallah.
The Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam says to
him, once you're in that position, you made
wudu', you went to your bed, and you're
on your right side right now.
One of the most vulnerable positions of your
day and night, right?
There's nothing, you can't protect yourself, defend yourself
if someone decides to attack.
Or if luck of Allah, something happens.
And may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make
it easier for our brothers and sisters in
Gaza.
And we know that their enemies usually target
them when they're asleep.
Because they know they cannot do anything.
They're in the most vulnerable moment, subhanAllah.
Very vulnerable in that moment.
And one of the amazing things about the
sisters of Gaza, may Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala protect them, may Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala keep them safe.
When they go to sleep, they go to
sleep with their hijab on.
Why is that?
They don't need to be wearing hijab when
they go to sleep.
But they do it because they're afraid when
they're asleep, something could happen, a strike, whatever.
And in this case, they want to make
sure that if they die, they die fully
covered.
And if they're rescued, they're still, alhamdulillah, fully
covered.
Look at the iman and the way they
think about the meaning of these events in
their lives.
Those are the people who say, Those are
the ones who keep saying, We all belong
to Allah, and to Him our return shall
be.
But here the Prophet ﷺ is teaching us
this du'a, اللهم إني أسلمت نفسي إليك
Which in translation means, Ya Allah, I have
submitted myself to You.
I have submitted myself to You.
Which means what?
I'm just giving myself to You.
There's nothing else I can do in this
moment.
You're taking care of me.
And I turned my face
to You.
That's an Arabic expression for what, jama'ah?
Like, all my attention.
That's the full iman.
I give my face to You.
I am giving You all my attention.
I'm not paying attention to anybody else.
I'm putting all my trust in You.
That's what it means.
And I entrusted my
affairs to You.
This is it.
When I'm asleep, I can't control anything after
that.
I can't control my safety.
I can't control my wealth.
I can't control my car that's out there.
I can't control anything.
It's all in Your hand.
Ya Allah, I entrust all these matters to
You.
So that when I wake up, they're still
there.
My health is still there.
So at least I put all my affairs
into Your hand.
And I have turned
my back to You.
Or committed my back to You.
What does that mean?
In the Arabic language, just like English as
well too, the back means وَرَجِمْعَ Like support.
Which means I lean completely on You.
When you say lean on somebody, what does
that mean?
Like you trust them.
You rely on them.
You're looking for their support.
So here when you say, Ya Rabbi, I'm
committing my back to You, which means I
lean on You for protection, for support, for
everything.
I'm doing this out
of hope for the reward from You.
And also out of fear of You.
Because I believe in You.
I know Your capability.
I know what You could do for me.
And I know if I don't commit myself
to You, what I can get as a
result out of this.
There is no refuge and no place of
safety from You, but with You.
This is ironic over here.
When you fear something, what do you do?
Do you go to it or do you
run away from it?
You go away from it.
You run away from it.
But with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, if
you fear Him, where would you go?
Back to Him.
Back to Him.
Why is that?
Because you believe that He is the Ar
-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, Al-Ghafoor.
And He is the one who is going
to help and support and protect you.
Even from your own self.
Subhanallah.
And even protect you from Him subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
Like I know Allah, I want to protect
myself from Your wrath by going back to
Your mercy.
To Ar-Rahman.
I'm doing this
because I believe in the book which You
revealed.
وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتُ and the Prophet whom You
sent.
you die with this belief, if you truly
pronounce these words, truly from your heart, not
just from your tongue, if you do that,
You die on the state of true
Iman, true religion.
يعني meaning what?
Pure.
That's what it means.
Clean slate.
And what else do we need more than
that?
In Umar when he was on his deathbed,
what was he saying?
He was saying to himself,
I wish I haven't done anything in
this life.
I haven't got anything in this life.
If I could come
out of this world even, meaning I haven't
done anything good, nothing even, nothing bad.
I want to just be a clean slate.
If possible, that would be great.
To that level, he wants to have no
liabilities in his account.
And if Allah wills that you
wake up, then alhamdulillah you've earned a lot
of good.
Even in your sleep.
In your sleep, you've earned a lot of
good.
And the other narration
of Prophet ﷺ said that you make wudu,
just like you do in salah.
And when you sleep, you sleep on your
right side.
Now from the narration as well, the Prophet
Make
these words be the last that you pronounce
before you go to sleep.
Some of the ulema, they say,
Of the last few words
you say.
Which means not the last last, but of
the last few words that you would say.
Now in another narration, the Prophet ﷺ told
him, Repeat.
So repeat what I just told you.
So he repeated those words, but when he
came to نَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ The Prophet who
you sent, he said,
The Messenger who you sent.
So the Prophet ﷺ corrected him.
He said, no, no, no.
Say it again, he says,
Your Prophet.
The Prophet who you sent.
The ulema, they give different meanings for that.
Some they say it's because the messenger,
can be a prophet and can be also
an angel.
When Allah ﷻ spoke about Jibreel, he says
رسول الكريم, a noble messenger.
But the most popular opinion, they say no,
because there's a difference between رسول and a
prophet.
رسول is the one who brings a new
legislation from Allah ﷻ, usually comes with a
new book, and the prophet is the one
who continues the prophet from before, the message
from before, maybe bring just some amendment, just
amendment to some of the legislation that were
sent before him.
So as you can see here, when you
are in one of the most vulnerable moments,
when you go to bed, and once you
fall asleep, this is it, you don't know
what's going to happen after that.
You have no control over any of your
affairs.
That's why you need وَدَجِمَع, full trust in
Allah ﷻ, and full reliance on Him.
By the way, that is a نعمة, and
I don't know, a lot of people, especially
people in Gaza and Lebanon right now, why
they lost this نعمة, جماعة.
The نعمة of going to bed, just to
close their eyes, knowing that they're going to
wake up just like when they slept.
الحمد لله, their house is there, their life
is there, their family is there, their job
is there, their clothes are there, everything is
there.
That is a نعمة that we don't give
شكر enough for it, Wallahi.
We get used to it.
We keep used to it, we're just going
to wake up and we don't even pay
attention.
That's a privilege,
Wallahi, it's a privilege that you wake up
and you have all these things still in
there.
We get used to it so much, so
we think it's actually, it's the standard.
No, it's not.
Wallahi, it's a privilege from Allah ﷻ.
Even nowadays, not just even war, Allah ﷻ,
natural disasters, hurricanes.
We've seen what happens in Spain, in Bosnia
before that, the floods.
In an instant, people's livelihood completely was wiped
out, completely wiped out.
So you can imagine, this is a نعمة
that we need to do a lot of
شكر for.
And definitely, with you trusting Allah ﷻ every
single night, at least, that's one of your
way of appreciating this نعمة.
That when you go to sleep, you mention
this دعاء, and you mention it with your
heart, not just with your tongue.
So that you at least, you know that,
I am truly and genuinely trusting all these
matters in the hand of Allah ﷻ.
May Allah ﷻ make us among those who
have the full يقين in Him, Ya Rabb
al-'Alameen, and put their full reliance on Him,
Ya Allah.
Let's repeat this دعاء, inshallah, one time together,
inshallah wa ta'ala.
