Salaam Alaikum, warahmatullahi wa
salatu wassalamualaikum in a shaitanya. Rajeem Bismillahi,
beloved brothers
and
elders, Leonard ulama, her father, mothers and sisters, after having
greeted each other in the manner taught to us by habibuna Mustafa,
Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, we remind ourselves of the
auspiciousness of the day of Jummah, and Inshallah, throughout
the day of Jumah and beyond, we continue with the rule and Salawat
upon habibu, Namo, Stafa, Muhammad Sallallahu, alayhi wa sallam,
winter is coming.
So Subhanallah, what informs the choice of topic for discussion
today?
On a light hearted note, the last time I had the opportunity of
sharing Juma with you, some of the brothers in rulama was saying,
Bashara, you brought the rain. So I thought maybe going into the
cold months, I rather give you a heads up and tell you that winter
is coming. Before you say, I am the reason why you're starting to
experience slightly colder temperatures.
So Subhanallah that being on a lighter note, I start with a
personal anecdote unrelated to winter, but directly related to
summer. On one occasion, one of my teachers summoned me, as
Subhanallah, or teachers, have a right to do and he wanted me to be
part of this short consultation with regards to another graduating
student of ill, another student of knowledge, a very reputable,
renowned, well known Tari in one of the bigger massage in
Johannesburg, was graduating, and he was consulting my Teacher with
regards to his further studies, already there Subhanallah a lesson
for all of us. May we continuously be in the process of upskilling
and developing ourselves in our various fields and careers, so
that we are contributing to being that intellectual capital of the
ummah of habibu, NamUs kapaam, Muhammad, sallAllahu, alayhi wa
sallam. So my teacher wanted my insight, because this particular
graduate was interested in pursuing a career as a career as a
student and a graduate of Islamic and Sharia sciences, he was
interested in pursuing a career of further studies in health and
allied sciences. And the first point I mentioned when my teacher
asked for input was he should move to Cape Town.
Winter is coming,
so my teacher looked at me, perplexed. We're asking you about
health sciences, and your first input is he should move to Cape
Town. Why? My teacher inquired, and I said, Subhan Allah, because
he will be privy in the summer months to much longer days, which
means his ability to study, to exert himself, to balance his
family life and to produce output that would add value to the
community and society. Subhanallah would be amazing, because if he
commenced that Fajr and went all the way up tal Mari in the summer
months for us in Cape Town, and I say us, some of you, Sun Hala may
know what that means.
Would mean that he could complete the standard day at work at 5pm
and still have two to two and a half hours of light hours to be
productive.
Now we are going to experience the opposite with regards to winter is
coming. Because some of you would know that on certain days, if you
start your work day early in winter, you could arguably observe
salatul Fajar at your place of employee,
SubhanAllah. What did habibuna, Mustafa, Muhammad Sallam say with
regards to winter?
Winter is the spring time of the believer.
How so? So let's throw back to the previous tumor I shared with you.
We had made an undertaking, individually and collectively,
that we would exert ourselves in the month of Ramadan, that Allah
has blessed us of having been witnessed the month of Ramadan.
May Allah bless us with many more ramadans. I mean Europe. And we we
focused on the unique ibadah, which is the first Ibadah we make
in the month of Ramadan, as salatu torawi, and we said Ramadan was
also synonymous with fasting. So habibu, namustafa, Muhammad,
sallAllahu, alaihi wasallam tells us in this narration that winter
is the springtime of the believer, because of two unique factors, if
you wanted to understand Winter is coming in a very.
Easy, crisp manner, the father ill and the virtues of winter.
Habibuna, Mustafa Muhammad also said because the nights are long
in narabaya, Alamo Anna katakumu, adnamin, Sulu Teil lewanista,
whoa, if i tumina la Dina. Mark Allah mentions in Suratul Muslim
that indeed your Lord knows that you spend two thirds of the night,
or at times half of the night, observing the night vigil.
Well Levina, Mark and those who are with you, the idea of qiyamuli
Beyond the month of Ramadan and established sunnah of habibu,
namustafa, Muhammad, sallAllahu, alaihi wasallam throughout their
Allah references is also in the 15 years of Quran asking salatul ke
Shamsi, ilahasaki, Leila, Quran Al Fajr.
In the Quran Al Fajr that Quran recited in the early morning
hours, this is witnessed by Allah subhanahu wa taali so habibu
namusta pa Muhammad SAW some pointing out to us that the longer
nights in winter give you an additional opportunity of, if not
more hours to spend in qayyar Mulay, a low hanging fruit that
all of us can capitalize on, if we maintain the time at which we've
been waking up through the month of Ramadan now, already two weeks
post the month of Rama, two weeks in a day, post the month of
Ramadan, Allahu, Akbar, we can establish and add a pattern, a
habit of being those who are conscientious on the observance of
salatu, tahajjud,
so we keep the same Wake up time. And other than just squeezing in a
two raka or four Raka, Allahu Akbar will be able to pack in an
entire hour of rebadan
as one of the father ill and virtues of winter. What is the
second Ramadan was synonymous with Quran and fasting. So habibu na
Mustafa Muhammad SAW some then also references the idea that the
fast of the winter month are shorter.
How we enjoyed the consequence of fasting, the likeness that we felt
literally and figuratively because of less consumption through the
Inshallah, through the month of Ramadan, would mean that if we
keep fasting, and we've just come through the middle of the month of
Shawal iyam, will be the white days we look forward to Mondays
and Thursdays as times when habibu namustafa Muhammad SAW some in the
entire city of Medina to Munawwara up until this day and age. And by
extension, people in pockets of the Ummah, subhanAllah,
diligently, conscientiously observed the fast of Monday and
Thursday, once again, an opportunity for us. So the
cleansing that we experience by virtue of fasting in the month of
Ramadan. Inshallah, we can carry those positive traits beyond by
looking at this other virtue of winter, which is where we fast,
because the fast are shorter. Now, there's a nuance in terms of
observing fast in summer and fast in winter. In summer, maybe
Subhanallah, you would experience that sense of being able to
empathize with those who have less because there's some element of
thirst. But in winter, what becomes pronounced by virtue of
fasting, in terms of creating the empathy within us, is that you
experience the severity of the cold.
Because I'm sure there's many health professionals here,
subhanAllah, the less consumption, or the decrease in consumption,
would mean that on a cellular level, you now start experiencing
that cold a little bit more. And this then informs other of the
teachings of habibu na Mustafa, Muhammad, sallAllahu, alaihi
wasallam, we as a community, Alhamdulillah Summa. Alhamdulillah
are those who are, by and large, generous.
And when we speak of winter is coming. One of the take homes from
today's discussion would be around the generosity that individually
and collectively, we, as the brother um of habibu namustafa
Muhammad, saw some, particularly in this part of the world and in
this country, and by extension, in this city, subhanAllah, a
synonymous pool, is that there's a sense of generosity in winter
because of the numerous winter warmth campaigns that the NGOs and
the pbos, the non governmental organizations and the public
benefit organizations for us ordinary folk, the charitable
organizations would run in winter, but the call Subhanallah that I
make today is for us to rethink,
what is it that we contributing towards in terms of these winter
campaigns? Why
is it immediate relief? Which is a need, or does it have an element
of development? It's.
Because a term that we all familiar with is ROI return on
investment. What does Allah say on the first verse of the fourth Jews
of Quran lentana, none of you shall truly attain righteousness
until you expend of that which you love. So
is my charity in the month of in the winter months, that which is
giving away the oldest of my clothing.
Is that going to attain me the bill, the righteousness that Allah
speaks about or is my charity using the example of clothing and
my giving away the clothing that which is linked to the most fit
for purpose pieces of clothing that I give away, and
we're going to build on their thoughts of Hanukkah? Are we the
community and society who are only dishing out hot meals in winter
because that's a means of adding value to people, or are we willing
to take a little bit more of a developmental approach in terms of
the necessary charity in winter? There needs to be a balance. What
is the balance when we have many public facilities, hospitals,
old age homes, prisons, where they are human beings too,
and the harshness of the winter arguably, is sometimes felt more
by the peoples of hanala in those facilities.
What stops us as a community without the acronym of whichever
PBO or NGO or charitable organization of labeling, because
we have within the winter warmth campaigns. We have blanket runs,
right? So every year Subhanallah, we purchase blankets and we hand
them out to needy families. I ask a question, when was the last time
you replaced the blankets in your own home. What's the lifespan of a
blanket? Is it one winter season? The answer is no,
five years, six years, irrespective of the quality of the
blanket, whether it's mink or it's not mink. Subhanallah, the
lifespan of a blanket is more than a single winter season when
we with blindfolds plug into these campaigns,
not realizing that they perpetuate certain other problems. Because in
the sub economic communities where these blanket drives take place,
one home at many times, eventually received six or seven blankets. So
the breadwinner in that home, appreciating unemployment is on
the rise, sees little need in his mind to go out and seek employment
because someone is seeing to our needs. What happens with the seven
blankets that arguably, this home maybe receiving every year, it
perpetuates the mindset for that individual to say, hey, I can hang
back,
because next winter we'll get more blankets, but we don't need seven
blankets, because maybe we three people living in the home. So what
happens with the additional four blankets? Every year they get sold
off. I'm not saying we shouldn't distribute blankets, but what I am
saying is redirect the distribution of those blankets
towards certain facilities where they may not be blankets, and take
the time and energy of stitching on a label that says, from the
ummah of habibu na Mustafa, Muhammad, sallAllahu, alayhi wa
sallam, from the followers of Islam,
appreciating that pilferage happens in the hospitals and in
the prisons as well. But isn't that an opportunity of Dawa for
the person who's experiencing cold in the hospital or the prison or
the old age home to say that this blanket that's keeping me warm has
come to me from the followers of la ilaha, illAllah Muhammad,
Rasulullah, and arguably, the same blanket that we would be
distributing would now have a longer lifespan and more use would
be extracted from it over a protracted period of time.
As one thought,
what stops us, as those who are generous in the war, in the in the
winter months, from being ones who will install there's risks here
too little heaters in some of the public schools, so that the young
children who perhaps don't have footwear and who don't have
clothing, subhanAllah would be able to experience some level of
warmth in the facilities where they are receiving some sort of
education. Yes, I know I may be sharing very simplistic examples,
and there's levels of complexity and different dimensions, but
these are to spur Subhanallah some of the thoughts in our minds for
us to be creative. I.
Beyond just doing what we've been doing here on Year and Year and
Year,
coming back to the societal problems I referenced as a result
of the toxic charity that we are sometimes guilty of because we are
not thinking on a systems level.
So the breadwinner of at home doesn't see a need to go and seek
employment, appreciating that the match between where employment is
available and what type of skill set, etc, also has its own
challenges. What then happens that person starts irritating the rest
of the inhabitants of the household, so the women folk and
the children, and then we have other societal problems, abuse,
etcetera, etcetera. So sometimes in us wanting to achieve a reward
without thinking a term that we all familiar with around the
return on investment, we are actually perpetuating and creating
other problems. Okay, as a second thought, two virtues of winter
we've discussed, the long nights, the opportunity of tahajjud and
Kaya mule, the short days, the opportunity of fasting. The third
that we discussed is with regards to our charity, needing to achieve
higher levels of return on investment then
few minutes remaining, the unique Subhanallah positioning of the
winters of the cape.
What is unique
of the winter we experience in the cape compared to many other parts
of our country
that we have wintering
pure silly. Sama Ari Kum with Doro. Volume did come be amwali.
Verina wage, Allah come generic. Ala Kum, Anna,
yes,
our areas are synonymous with winter rain. Maybe those patterns
have somewhat changed over the last two or three years. We won't
speak about cloud seeding, etc, etc. But we are also cognizant
Subhanallah, that in coming back to the example I shared
surrounding giving off of those pieces of clothing for people's
warmth and fit for use and fit for purpose,
let it be such that the generosity that stems from us, individually
or collectively, sees to that unique need. And the ayah that
precedes the one I read from Surat nur is where Allah subhanahu wa
tells us how we will manage to secure the consistent winter rain
that feeds what that feeds the economic and physical ecosystem of
our province. There's a reason for the winter rain. Certain crops
grow, subhanAllah in our province, etc. Those add to the coffers of
the nation, as well as the coffers of our region in our province. How
do we secure the consistency of those winter rains travel to stuff
Firo, a Bakun in nahuka Farah,
I say to you, istara Baku, Allah mentions in Quran seek forgiveness
for your from your Lord in nahukana. Farah, indeed, here,
Allah, Subhanahu wa Taala is most forgiving. So a unique feature of
winter as a father ill and a virtue of winter and the means of
us being able to make sure to do our part in terms of achieving the
consistency of that winter rain, season on season. Today, the date
in English is the 26th of April,
a criticism, and rightfully so many times, from the community,
is that the Ulama are at times, not in tune with what is happening
in the broader public. So that's why I referenced the date, the
26th of April,
because it's the day before the 27th of April, subhanAllah, 30
years
and I want to tie this to the hadith of habibu namustaba,
Muhammad, sallAllahu, alayhi wa sallam. Winter is the spring time
of the believer.
So what is your individual outlook on our country and its welfare and
its future, it's bleak, right?
Winter is the springtime of the believer. We are eternal
optimists, based on this hadith of habibu namustaba, Muhammad Salas,
whilst in the early stages of our country we enjoyed maybe much more
leverage politically and economically, and that has
declined over the last 30 years, winter as the springtime of the
believer exercise your minds and your choices in terms of what will
allow us to move out of the ebb and the abus that we currently
find ourselves.
Have seen towards once again being a riding crescendo, so that we can
once again rise up to experience those peaks. If you had to plot it
on a graph, there's lots of hanala in terms of those last few phrases
I've shared with you my parting words, noting that I have I want
to extend a little bit more Allah that Subhanallah I have just a
minute or so remaining is this is also the season of Hajj, when we
conclude the month of Ramadan. The next two months and 10 days are
known as the months of hajj.
And very soon, people in our community will be departing on the
journey of Hajj.
So let's tie in what we mentioned of the faba il of winter to a
period of time that's coming now that if we didn't manage to
achieve the great gains of the month of Ramadan, we can,
Inshallah, plan and scheme to catch them in this season. What
were the best 10 consecutive nights in the Hijri calendar, the
last 10 of ramaba. And we spoke about the unique opportunity that
existed for the younger brothers and sisters of hung up sitting in
antikav because it happened to fall squarely in their school and
university holidays, right?
And some of us said, Ah, but I'm working and I don't have leave and
I'm busy on a project, etc, etc. So then we ask ourselves the
question from the words of habibu namustafa Muhammad SAW some what
are the next 10 best consecutive days? They are the first 10 days
of
if we didn't manage to secure as much as we wanted, and extract as
much as we wanted from the last 10 consecutive nights as the best 10
nights in the Hijri calendar. Then Subhanallah, here's a one and a
half month heads up
to the best 10 consecutive days in the Hijri calendar as the first 10
days of
so prepare yourself. Inshallah, plan yourself, free yourself for
this period of added spirituality. Two more things our community is
known for, giving her judge a great send off.
And I'm and I'm speaking now to the broader Jamaican congregation,
not only the judge, but if we look at what we learn from the practice
of our communities throughout time, then there was always more
emphasis on the receiving of the huja than the farewell to the
huja. I'm not saying do away with our cultural practices, but I am
saying make much more of a hullabaloo surrounding receiving
the huja on their return, relative to giving them a farewell in the
send off. To the extent of, if you had to be at Cairo airport in the
season when hajars were returning Ya Allah, you will not be able to
move an inch. Arguably, it's even tighter than being on the map
during Hajj things because the people would come from the
villages to receive Subhanallah, the judge appreciating the value
of the huja. I'm using this to raise two points. Number one, each
of us should be seeking out the people in our community who are
going on Hajj, making sure that we ask them to write down the DUA
that we would like they make on behalf of us and the community on
Arafa number one, number two, make sure that on the evening, before
the departure, you are not keeping up them up till the wee hours of
the morning, because then they arrive in Medina Tul munara and
makatul mukarrama tired on their first day. So appreciate the
etiquette with regards to visiting that we learn from the Sunnah of
habibuna, Mustafa, Muhammad, sallAllahu, Sallam and I close
with this point. Winter is coming when you go to receive the Haja at
the airport. Appreciating that airport arrival terminals are
generally bigger than departure terminals make big fanfare of
receiving them on their return. I know that's still two months and a
bit down the line, and because winter is coming, if you truly
were thoughtful, you would be the one could be carrying a jacket or
a jersey for everyone of the huja who was stepping off the plane,
malasanta la grant us, although
Salaam Alaikum,
Alhamdulillah, amazing Masha Allah, having my Honorable,
beloved colleague, mashallah, who once again mesmerized me. The
topic I was wondering, subhanAllah, winter is coming, how
you're going to speak about this and this, he blew our minds.
Subhanallah, you know, working through the Quran in the Sunnah,
and how we can be inshaAllah, fruitful during these beautiful
months, may Allah allow us understanding.
All inshaAllah inspire us for many, many more years to come. And
also, I must also
announce to the community that tomorrow our Hajj seminar is
starting here at our Majd Alhamdulillah, and it's been
spearheaded by none other than Malay Brahma and Lali. May Allah
reward him abundantly for his efforts. Subhanallah is not easy.
To leave your families behind for weekends. Mala this time you came
up with the family, we said we're going to do that, but May Allah
facilitate easy. Inshallah, I think we as a community must look
into that, and we call Malaya. Must bring his family with him.
It's not easy. Subhanallah, Allah, bliss. So we said, is a for that
beautiful rendition and that beautiful hood bar that was
rendered, may Allah open our hearts and our minds, and Allah
allow us that our nights can become filled with Ibadah in
winter, in our days, we are grateful, and gratitude. Show
gratitude to Allah by means of fasting Inshallah, I mean. And
then also we have a weekly Hajj classes that are started Tuesday
that has passed inshallah for those who will be at our Hajj
seminar tomorrow, if there's anything after that that we are
not clear with Inshallah, we can be in our Hajj classes. It will
lead up to Hajj month in sha Allahu, taala. And then we have a
games evening that's happening next Friday, hosted by the masjid
itself, commencing at 6pm inshallah onwards. So we ask the
entire community inshallah to come and have a beautiful evening with
us at the masjid that will be a fundraiser towards the masjid and
the Mater rasa inshallah. And then I'm going to leave the next point
to our community,
which will be Inshallah,
spearheaded by our honorable chairman, Asgar Ali Khan
Inshallah, who will give us some exciting news. I am extremely
excited about this, and I'm sure and certain that all of us will be
extremely excited about this. This is what we were waiting for,
Inshallah, and this is this one step towards where we want to be.
Nilahi talami dua for us. So I'm sure everybody's like, what is
Mona talking about? Inshallah? Again, I'm not going to let them
wait in limbo anymore. Inshallah,
Salama
has built this really up so Inshallah, hopefully it will will
live up the expectation expectations. Inshallah,
many of you have attended our Eid program, our Ramadan program,
preceding Eid, and Eid itself, the Eid program Subhanallah, what a
wonderful program it was. And we've noticed, even with Juma in
over the past few months, we've noticed that there is a growth in
this community, a huge growth. It's the growth is actually
exceeded expectations. It's been phenomenal. Subhanallah and
on Eid day itself, we had the entire courtyard filled to
capacity. There wasn't a place for someone to sit. It was that full.
And it as heartwarming as it, it was and is. It's also for us as
the mutawalis of the masjid, it's also heartbreaking that we are not
able to accommodate everybody, to give them comfort seating, whether
you come on time, whether you come late, but we want to try to
accommodate everybody, and to date, we've worked within
the confines of our current space. Alhamdulillah, we have 3600 square
meters of community use space. We lease property for parking. We are
engaging with City of Cape Town and with PWP, as well as with pick
and pay to try and lease the the land across the road, which is in
the parkway. And there are many ideas, but Alhamdulillah, these
are all projects that have been in the pipeline for years, and we are
bursting at the seams. So as an executive committee, it's not only
our endeavor to provide wonderful programs and keep getting our
attendances increasing, because that's not sustainable. And we've,
Alhamdulillah, approached one of the adjacent properties, one of
the houses that was on sale, and we've put in an offer to purchase,
and Alhamdulillah, it was accepted.
Alhamdulillah, so we are working with in the limitations of land
use management and all the other confines of the City of Cape Town
and province, and the intention, Inshallah, is to use that property
to decentralize some of our operations that are taking up
kneeling spaces in this masjid, so that when we have the big
occasions, that we are able to accommodate the musalis for the
big nights, for the all the other programs that we generally tend to
have, and Alhamdulillah, we've seen with all the different
nasheed.
So on this Masjid is full to capacity. So Inshallah, we will be
launching a fundraising campaign. I know many of you, when you see
me at this mic, then you know I'm going to ask for money. So it's,
it's deja vu, 2021
so we'll basically be also you will be seeing me from time to
time, but I can tell you, it's something that the entire
executive unanimously voted in favor of, and we've got it's a
strategic plan that has a 2024 goal, a 2025 2026 Inshallah, and
we are working to serve the community, not only in terms of
our programs, but also in terms of creating infrastructure that is
able to house everyone. And our Nia is, I mean, and this is a
generous community, so please, when we do launch, please donate
generously. But our Nia is as such. There are two fold. One is
that we build this capacity, but we want the masjid to be filled,
not only for the big nights when we have for the five daily, oh
God, the five daily. Wax, the five daily Okay, when we have those
watts, we want the Fajr Salah, the Ishai salah, when we don't, when
we see the numbers dwindle, that is our fervent near so Inshallah,
may Allah make these spaces become available to us. May the
purchasing of the property, we've paid the deposit. Alhamdulillah,
may it be a success. We now have a short rule that we need to catch
up with and inshallah. We will tell this Masjid to the brim for
every watt inshallah and Inshallah,
mister. Mean, I think, how do you feel about that.
Allah Akbar, we've waited. I've waited long. You know, I started
14 years ago as a small, little, young Imam. Then I thought, look
at the masjid. It's so small. Subhanallah, I'm looking at the
same faces every week. Wallahi, I knew where every person said, that
is how for for the for 10 years of my life, I saw everybody said,
mustaba is sitting there. Mr. Johan is sitting there. I knew
where everyone was sitting. Taruba. Ida said, Yeah, always at
the aji you know. And now, you know, every week, Allah, but it
makes my heart happy. I always see new faces. I see how Masjid tuba
is growing. I see when these programs that's running here, how
people come from all over and, yeah, why is it because of your
duaz, because of you coming to the masjid and cry to Allah for the
masajid to be filled. And this Masjid will never be too small. We
will do as much as we can to accommodate for people to come to
the house of Allah, to Allah. May Allah bless you all inshallah. So
with that news, remember man Bana, whoever builds Inshallah, Masjid,
a masjid in the path of Allah, but Allah, Allah will vote for you,
similar a castle in paradise. How many castles Do you have already?
Allah, there's never enough. Build your castles because,
inshallah say, I mean
Buddha. Youngster said, I mean, the Bush Vita was clavitroat, but
So may Allah says, May Allah help Inshallah, but this is something
that only us, is the community can do. And Wallahi, like our
chairman, I said, we have a generous community. Their hearts
mashallah just open to spend in the Cause of Allah. And may Allah
accept from you and everything that you do not, not only must
Allah increase you in the year after, Allah must increase you a
year also, inshallah to do much more that we have, that we can
have, Malala, every, every, every week here also, we don't mind.
Inshallah,
Allah, lovely. Inshallah. Barakah. We are all excited about this. It
has started. We've paid the deposit. Alhamdulillah, it's true.
So now communication will go out to the community. We'll hear about
it for a few months, probably. And I believe, like in covid, I think
it was three months that building at the back was standing. In three
months they built that building, you know, Inshallah, I think if
that building is so big, our Masha Allah chairman has designed and,
you know, see that everything go into place. I think it will only
take us a month,
because, like a nervous, lucky, but say, I mean, still, I mean
barakla Allah, bless you all Inshallah, salaam, Alaikum,
the
