Tariq Ramadan – Chronicles of Ramadan #30 Peace

Peace be with you.

I said the word peace.

Peace is a central

notion in Islam, in our tradition.

In Islam, there is salam. It's the same

root

as to the word,

and salam is

the name of God is one of the

names of God. Is the name of the

paradise, is what we have to spread around

us. The prophet, peace be upon him, said,

they've shulsedah,

spread peace around you. And what you have

to get in your intimate life is this

inner peace,

this peaceful reality by repairing

all the troubles and the traumas, and what

you experience in your life. It's to get

this inner peace. So

peace is an ideal. It's what you are

trying to reach

out of

your journey,

in life.

And

through this Ramadan, what we have we were

trying to get is with being, with listening,

with looking at, with acting.

It's all about peace.

But peace is

an ideal that is not easy to reach

because very often we have trouble, we have

death, we are experiencing

difficulties in our life.

And in order to get that peace, we

understand

that we need to be involved. We need

to be active, and we need to understand

the very meaning of peace. You know, it

has nothing to do with what we had

in the sixties. As I said yesterday,

it's about peace and love, and it's about

emotions. No.

Peace is,

demanding in the way you have to be

part of the process, to change the world,

to change yourself, to reform, to repair.

To get peace, you have to repair.

So the notion of repair, which was our

notion during this Ramadan,

is connected to peace. In order to get

this, you should go through this, and you

should go through this,

repairing yourself and repairing

out of our presence in the world.

So, once again, what we have in Islam,

the highest

the highest

value in Islam is peace.

And to get this, you understand that you

have to respect some conditions.

Justice is

a condition of peace.

No justice,

no peace.

Repairing, reforming,

no reform or no,

repairing of our intimate life

will not get this peace.

When we deal with our brothers and sisters,

if you we don't spread,

understanding

and mutual knowledge, as it is said in

the Quran,

no peace.

So peace is a call for us

to get the very essence of the spiritual

message.

Change yourself.

Behave the way you have to behave,

and spread,

the good deeds around you

in get in in do in order to

get this peace that is necessary for the

world to be at better place.

And what you have to start to do

is at your level,

in your surrounding,

in your environment,

ask yourself

in which way your presence

is making

your place

a better place

to live in.

Don't forget to tell the people you love

that you love them. Life is fragile.
