It is said that everybody has their own
personal meditation place.
I think mine
is in my car
driving at night.
It's here that my mind visits an infinite
number of concerns.
But one concern that stays with me and
has been with me since the earliest days
of my Islam
is education.
As a convert, I experienced what it means
to learn religion on my own,
to be guided by Allah

And as an educator, whether on an individual
level or a public level,
I've engaged large numbers of people and I've
heard that same passion,
especially for English speaking Muslims.
That's actually what compelled me to move to
Egypt where I lived for 7 years and
studied.
The quest to understand not only
what it means to know my faith, but
to know the process of knowing my faith.
After completing my education in Egypt, I came
back to the states. I lived in the
Bay Area. I lived in Boston. I lived
in DC,
and now I'm in New York City. And
a few years ago, that question compelled me
to start SWISS.
SWISS is the Suhaib Webb Institute
of the Sacred Sciences,
where we marry professional educators
with mainstream texts, where we are bold enough
to cling to orthodoxy,
but brave enough to shade that orthodoxy with
the questions
and concerns
of the people of today.
