Dear brothers and sisters, I ask of myself
and all of you the most important reminder
that we could ever have To grapple with
taqwa The consciousness, the awe, the fear of
Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala in our lives To
formulate attitudes of consciousness and taqwa As Allah
subhanahu wa'ta'ala has ordered us and those
who came before us This world today It
runs off of a very certain philosophy about
reality, about life and which is expressed in
many different ways It's called the American dream
for all of you folks It's called You
can't make it Till you're big What I
mean by big here is in money and
not in size This is effectively the notion
that To be good in this world is
to make money for no other sake than
making more You make money to build more
money and this is success.
So this is a very particular Understanding which
is known as capitalism This philosophy of wealth
is known as Give me any other reason
that is incentivizing my growth in money in
finance, in material and you see that Many
times in history people have gotten the philosophy
of finance wrong If you look at the
yahood They are expressed in the Quran and
throughout history as those who lifted all barriers
upon financial restrictions that Allow us to be
ethical or unethical in our finances.
They made it a domain of everything is
halal.
So riba usury is halal and it is
acceptable and they believe this is the only
way towards making good money is by making
everything halal and Then you had later onwards
a removement against that which is the Christian
understanding of money Which is the best money
is when you don't have any Being devoid
of any financial burdens at all is true
freedom and closeness to Allah So if you
want to be close to Allah don't have
any money Don't don't make any money and
You will be good.
You will be close to Allah.
You will be saintly pious Islam Comes as
a rectification as a correction to these deviations
in their understanding of money It tells you
money is a means it's a tool in
a tool Cannot be good or bad unless
you use it And if you use it
for good It will be good for you
And if you use it for bad It
will be bad for you This is the
philosophy of money in Islam and this is
expressed throughout the Quran and the Sunnah And
today we will take a few ayats of
surah Muhammad in which Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala
speaks of this In the last couple of
ayats surah Muhammad Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala says
innamal hayatu al dunya la'ibun wa lahum
Verily this world, this life itself Is a
play thing Amusement in play It's like monopoly.
It's not real The money you make the
things you do you sure you can get
involved You can get invested in the game
You can make it the game of the
world You can make an economy that is
devoid of any ethical or moral standards You
can talk about money as if it has
nothing to do with right or wrong as
if it exists for itself by itself It
is a means unto itself and ends of
itself.
Not even a means you can do that
But at the end of the day It's
just monopoly.
It's a game la'ibun wa lahum wa
in tu'minu And if you believe in Allah
if you are faithful to God Wa tattaqoo
and have consciousness of him have taqwa yu'tikum
ujurakum You will be given your reward full
wa la yas'alkum amwanakum Allah says in
you will not be asked about your wealth.
Now here the ulama When they do tafsir
of this ayah, especially this last part here
wa la yas'alkum amwanakum.
What does that mean?
And you will not be asked of your
money What does that even mean many of
the ulama The mufassireen, the exegetes, they say
that this means Allah will not ask you
to spend all of your money in his
way So yes, this is monopoly.
It's a game.
It's amusements.
It's not real But that doesn't mean that
Allah is telling you throw it all away
He's not telling you don't live off of
nothing Do not be part of the world
Live through the world.
Allah is not telling you that.
Allah is telling you this path is a
path that requires taqwa To have taqwa you
need to go through the world.
You need to walk through the path of
this dunya.
And so he says I will not ask
you for all of your money.
Other mufassireen Such as Ibn Abbas and others
They say this means that Allah is not
asking you for your money.
wa la yas'alkum amwanakum.
Allah is not asking you for your money
Why?
Because it's not yours to begin with It's
Allah's money It's his domain Everything is his.
You are his and everything you own and
everything that is created that exists is his
his domain His sovereignty His command, his rule.
So he's not asking you your money Because
it's not yours.
It's Allah's money SubhanAllah.
So I don't truly own.
Yes, Allah has given me stewardship Yes, Allah
has given me responsibility over what he has
given me But at the end of the
day me and everything that is under my
responsibility is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala So
Allah is not asking for his own body
according to this opinion Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala continues and he gets deeper into our
psyche, our psychological state He says in yas
'alkumuha.
If he was to ask you, to pressure
you sayurfikum Upon giving everything you have Christian
piety Meant not getting married.
It meant not owning anything It meant if
you wanted to be part of the church,
you could not have anything of your own
You could not get married.
You could not have children.
You could not do any of that.
What happened?
The Protestant movement the rebellion Allah says in
yas'alkumuha.
SubhanAllah this movement this protest Against Christianity and
Catholicism Did not happen except hundreds of years
after Islam came and the Quran was revealed
But Allah is telling us in yas'alkumuha
if I was to ask them and pressure
them sayurfikum tabkhalu They would Put their hand
away wa yukhrij adghanakum and this would bring
out their resentment If I did this to
them their resentment would come out they would
protest.
Allah said this He's saying a good life
is a life of balance Where you recognize
that this is not an ends But it
is a means to either a good end
or a bad end.
And so your hisab Will not be about
why you made so much or so little
But it'll be about how you used it
Where you used it.
Allah finishes The ayah, the next one and
the surah.
He finishes the surah by saying haa antum
haa ulaa These are the same people Tud
'auna li tunfiqoo fee sabeelil laa They are
called to spend in the way of Allah
fa minkum man yadkhal And they are those
who are stingy miserly they hold back When
they are called to spend in the way
of Allah when they are told to give
in his path in his cause for his
objectives and purposes wa man yadkhal Let them
know wa man yadkhal Whoever holds back is
miserly doesn't want to give thinks it's mine.
I own it.
It's for me fa innama yadkhalu AAal nafsi
Then he is only being stingy towards himself
If you hold back Thinking that I deserve
to hold back because it is mine for
my own ends Then you have already failed
and you have been stingy against yourself The
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam once asked the sahaba.
He said Which of the two wealths do
you prefer the wealth of your heirs?
The wealth of your inheritors or your own
wealth your own personal wealth He said Ya
Rasulullah, which one of us prefers the wealth
of his heirs or his own wealth Then
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said whatever you
give in the path of Allah is what
is truly yours Is what you truly have
Allah says wallahul ghani wa antumul fuqara Continuing
in the ayah Allah is self-sufficient The
truly wealthy the perfectly complete in his self
-sufficiency.
We talked about being independent We talked about
having different resources or different streams of income.
We talked about being self-sufficient We talked
about nobody can ever be that because we
are not Allah.
Allah is Al-Ghani Allah is the self
-sufficient wa antumul fuqara and you are The
poor you are the destitute you are the
needy You will always need Allah because you
are incomplete weak insufficient Every breath you take
is a blessing from him Wallahul ghani wa
antumul fuqara And then Allah finishes the surah
in the ayah he says wa inta tawallu
if you turn away from his path This
is all in the context of Understanding how
to approach finance and wealth and money.
He says if you turn away from this
path Yastabdil qawman ghayrakum.
He will replace you with another people with
another nation Thumma laa yakoonu amthalakum and they
will not be like you They will not
act this way They will be better than
you They will know how to approach life
wealth and the akhirah Aqoolu qawli hadha wa
istaghfirullah li wa lakum istaghfiru innahumul ghafoor wa
raheem Alhamdulillahi
Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam narrates In the
takhreej of Ibn Habban and others and the
Isnaad is sahih.
It is authentic Upon the authority of Abu
Dharr al-Ghifari radiyallahu ta'ala a'n
Who for another day his story had a
very unique perspective on money He says Mam
bana lillahi masjidan Whoever establishes builds a masjid
for Allah Walaw ka mafhasi qatatin Even if
it is of the size of a bird's
nest Qatat is a desert bird that flies
long distances but when it comes to Making
a house a nest.
It's this small.
It's the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam saying
whoever builds a masjid even this small In
the middle of the road somewhere around even
if it's small It doesn't need to be
grand.
It doesn't need to be big But you
did it with Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala in
mind with that intent and purpose in mind
Bana allahu laghu baytan fil jannah.
Allah will build for him a house in
Jannah not a nest not a bird's house
a Real house in Jannah.
And so as you all know Our masjid
this community Is looking to buy a bigger
property for the needs of The community and
to do that it requires that we fulfill
Whatever we can even if it's just a
little bit To give in the way of
Allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala to use the right
concept of wealth and Understand that what is
ours is not what is our heirs Prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam again.
He said there's only three things There's either
wealth that you use to eat clothe yourself
and the rest is not yours.
It is your heirs It's not really yours
you're building.
So yes make have use be strategic but
use it as a means towards the ends
that are required for our dunya and our
akhla and this project it requires all of
our help and So I ask all of
us to make the intent to donate to
give from that which is Allah's Just a
little in the way of Allah subhanahu wa'ta
'ala For this project so that Allah even
if it's a little bit you give Inshallah
with the will of God that will be
your house in Jannah The more times you
give the more houses you will have the
bigger you give of course Allah will even
accept more It's all about intention if it's
a little But it was given with the
right intentions Lila Allah will make it a
house for you in Jannah We ask Allah
to give us many houses in Jannah
