We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
grant him a place in Jannah.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make this
journey of the akhira an easy one for
him and may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
give his family sabra jameel.
And as he has gathered us here today
on this day of Jum'ah, may Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala gather us along with
our families in Jadal for Daws al-A
'la, And as he has gathered us here
today on this day of Jum'ah, may
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gather us along
with our families in Jadal for Daws al
-A'la, In the companionship of Rasulullahi ﷺ
and his Sahaba Amin Rabbal Alameen.
Brothers and sisters, as the new year began,
we heard so many times that make your
new year's resolution.
This is the time to reconnect with the
things that you have or we have perhaps
left out.
And when it comes to a believer, we
always are trying to look for opportunities to
come back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And I say this, that if it comes
to a new year and a person says
that, you know what, I'll make sure that
in 2025, I'll make sure that this year
is better than last year.
I'll make sure that my connection with Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala is better than my
connection with Allah last year.
And I'll make a more sincere and concentrated
effort to come close to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
If a person has that mentality, that mindset,
there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
We always are looking for opportunities to turn
our life around.
And when it comes to our purpose of
life, our purpose of life is to worship
Allah, to recognize Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
That is what our purpose of life is.
And when a person goes away from the
purpose of life, a person becomes useless.
A person becomes useless.
In fact, if you look at anything around
in your own house, imagine if you bought
a printer to print out sheets from your
computer.
It was bought for a purpose.
But if that printer is no longer serving
its purpose, what do we generally do with
that printer?
Do we keep it there in our homes?
No, we pick it up and we throw
it away in the garbage because it becomes
useless.
Likewise, the purpose of our existence on the
faceless earth is to worship Allah.
And as some ulema and even some sahaba
radiallahu ta'ala anhum, they explained the verse,
They say
that this is not only about worshiping Allah,
but it's about recognizing Allah.
It's about having the awareness of Allah everywhere
we go.
To have this mindset that Allah is watching
me wherever I am.
And therefore, if I fear anyone, then I
need to remind myself that Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala is watching.
So today inshaAllah in this khutbah, I want
to go through the concept of ibadah.
But there are four important things, four important
points inshaAllah I'm going to make in this
khutbah, related to the subject of ibadah.
Point number one, when it comes to ibadah,
ibadah provides a type of peace.
And it also provides mental well-being.
See, you know when you go to many
psychologists today, people who are struggling with their
mental health, they go to a psychologist, and
the psychologist or the counselor will say, that
I want you to sit down every single
day and disconnect yourself from everything, and I
just need you to sit down and reflect.
Well, this is exactly what we do in
salat.
If a person is actually standing in salat,
or they're engaged in ibadah, even if you
are reading, you're sitting down, not even actually
praying salat, but you're saying subhanAllah, and you
have a tasbih in your hand, you're saying
subhanAllah, alhamdulillah, allahu akbar, you have the Qur
'an in front of you open, and if
you're taking your time, this is the key
thing, you're taking your time, there's no rush,
wallahi you'll find a type of peace that
today majority of the people are deprived from.
If you sit down, if you stand in
salat, and you're reading the Qur'an, and
you know exactly what you're reading, you know
the meaning of Fatiha, you know the meaning
of the story, and the nuances of the
surah that you are reciting, or you're sitting
down and reading Qur'an, and as you're
reading Qur'an, you're reflecting on the story.
Imagine if you're reading a novel, brothers and
sisters, and you've already read that novel before,
and as you're coming along, you know exactly
where the story is going, and you're just
expecting it, and you're finding it just entertaining,
likewise when you sit down with the Qur
'an, and you read the story, and you
see how the Qur'an is structured, wallahi
you'll find it entertaining, you'll find within yourself
this zeal, and this wantingness, that I want
to keep on going deeper and deeper in
the Qur'an.
Or even if you're sitting down, and you're
reciting subhanAllah, what is the meaning of subhanAllah,
and you're reciting Alhamdulillah, and you're reflecting on
the meaning of Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar.
Ibadah actually does provide that inner peace that
you and I, we are looking for in
our life.
Unfortunately today, we are trying to find that
inner peace in other places, where it probably
does not exist.
When you look at the life of the
Prophet ﷺ, to help you understand this, go
back to the early days of the Prophet
ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ was persecuted.
His Sahaba were persecuted.
Why?
Because they simply said,
As a result, in order to make things
easy, for the Sahaba
the Prophet ﷺ, he sent a group of
Sahaba to Habsha, to Abyssinia, to migrate over
there, and to settle over there, and practice
their deen in peace.
While they're sitting over there in Habsha, in
peace, Rasulullah ﷺ being the community leader, he
still stayed in Makkah.
And he's still going through the persecution.
And he's watching his own Sahaba, his own
followers, his own loyal people being persecuted.
But during this entire ordeal, what was Rasulullah
ﷺ doing in order to bring peace into
his heart?
Because at the end of the day, he's
a human being, just like you and I.
When he sees this over and over again,
a man needs peace in their life.
So where was Rasulullah ﷺ finding that peace?
I'll tell you where he was finding that
peace.
He was finding that peace at night in
Qiyamul Layl.
He was finding that peace when he was
communicating with Allah ﷻ.
When everyone is asleep, he ﷺ was awake,
and he was conversing with Allah.
And this was something that we find very
common with the Prophet ﷺ.
In fact, one day, it is mentioned that
the Prophet ﷺ, he sat down, and he
lied down right next to Aisha, our mother
And he said that, if it's okay with
you, I want to engage tonight with Allah
ﷻ.
And our mother رضي الله عنها, she said
that, Ya Rasulullah, if this is what brings
you peace, and this is what makes you
happy, then this will make me happy too.
So the Prophet ﷺ, he engaged in ibadah
the entire night.
Till the morning came that Bilal
عنه came, and he called out the adhan.
And what is mentioned in the riwayah was
that you could see a small puddle that
was formed as a result of the tears
of Rasulullah ﷺ.
I mean, this is a man who is
forgiven.
A man that Allah ﷻ is pleased with.
Yet he did so much.
Why?
Because these Sahaba and the Prophet ﷺ, they
found that peace in the salat.
Today you and I, when we pray salat,
today you and I, when we read our
adhkar, even something simple as, Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu
Akbar.
We don't do it with reflection.
We just do it in a hurry.
How often do we send our peace and
blessings upon Rasulullah ﷺ.
Subhanallah, Subhanallah, Subhanallah.
No, do it with reflection.
Take a little time, and wallahi you will
see the peace in your life.
You will see how much peace it does
provide you.
If it did provide peace to the people
of the past, nothing has changed in terms
of the regimen.
It is the same adhkar, the same Qur
'an, the same salat.
So then why is it not providing peace?
It's not that the salat is problematic, or
the tasbih is problematic, or the Qur'an
is problematic.
It's we who are problematic.
And we try to rush through this.
This is why I remember my teacher, he
used to say, it was a very common
thing to say at that time, just expressing
how people used to pray salat, and they
would just express this, up, down, turn around,
touch the ground, and back to town.
This is how our salat is.
Up, down, turn around, touch the ground, and
back to town.
That's how it was.
So when we pray our salat, when we
do our adhkar, make sure we do it
with time, with humility, reflect on it.
And wallahi, it will provide you a kind
of peace, that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
has guaranteed that peace.
But you and I, we don't do it
the correct way.
And when we don't find peace in our
salat, when we don't find peace in the
adhkar, when we don't find peace in the
Qur'an, we don't blame ourselves.
The very first one that we often blame
is Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So this is the very first thing when
it comes to ibadah.
The second thing that we need to understand
about ibadah is, brothers and sisters, we often
talk about good character, good morals.
And this is something that our deen has
heavily emphasized upon.
In fact, we find stories such as a
woman, who was a devout worshiper, but she
did not make any concentrated effort to improve
her character, her morals.
And as a result, the Prophet ﷺ said,
that this ibadah of hers is of no
good, because it's not changing her.
It is not making her a better person.
Why do you think the Prophet ﷺ said
this?
Because the objective of worship to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala is that it makes you
a better person at the end of the
day.
It builds up more humility in your life.
It builds up more courage in your life.
It builds more patience in your life.
It builds more gratitude in your life.
And this is why I want you to
reflect on this ayah I'm gonna share with
you from Surah Al-Furqan.
It's a very beautiful, there's two verses, but
they both go hand in hand.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
Allah is talking about the characteristics
of those who are very close to Allah.
So he says that the sign, and one
of the signs that you can tell that
they are close to Allah is, that they
walk on the face of earth with the
utmost amount of humility.
They are very very humble.
And this is something that we need to
understand and I'm not gonna go into this
right now, but if there is an iota
amount of takabbur in our hearts, that we
are superior and I am better and so
forth, then this is problematic too.
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, takabbur is
a given right of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
No one can have...
Allah is al-mutakabbir.
There is no one else who can claim
that same status as Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
So anyone who has that takabbur in their
heart, this is something that belongs only to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because takabbur, as
Allah says He is mutakabbir, what does that
mean?
He is the law giver.
There is no one else who can set
the laws besides Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And He is the most superior of course.
So the concept is that these kind of
people when they walk on the face of
earth, they are absolutely humble.
And not only that, but even when they
come across people who are ignorant in life,
what do they do?
Do they engage and they battle ignorance with
ignorance?
No, the Qur'an says, they simply walk
away saying assalamu alaikum and they just walk
away.
They don't engage with ignorant people.
Imam Shafi'i rahmatullahi alayhi says that, if
there was ever I would lose a debate
with anyone, it was an ignorant person.
I could never win a battle or an
argument with an ignorant person.
So the Qur'an says that these are
the kind of people who they are.
But then what did He say about them
at night?
Listen to this very carefully brothers and sisters.
These are the
kind of people who engage in ibadah at
night.
And the ulema they say, that is this
ibadah, this ibadah that he does at night,
he engages with Allah that has given him
the ability to develop this kind of character
that during the day he is humble and
if he comes across an ignorant person, then
he just simply walks away, he does not
engage.
So the ulema they're saying that this akhlaq,
that this person has is as a result
of his ibadah at night.
So brothers and sisters, this is what ibadah
does to a person.
It brings within a person this humility, this
gratitude, and this is something that we find
even once again from Rasulullah ﷺ.
Going back to the same story I just
shared with you about him spending the entire
night in the worship of Allah.
When someone came to the Prophet ﷺ after
that and said that, Ya Rasulullah, why do
you do so much?
Why?
What was his response?
Should I not become,
should I not be a grateful slave to
Allah ﷻ?
The question is, this understanding of being grateful
to Allah, showing our gratitude to Allah, what
is that a result of?
It is a result of the ibadah that
a person does.
So when a person engages with Allah, Allah
ﷻ gives him the ability that he stays
away from these kind of things.
And that is why, actually he develops a
positive characteristics, but the salat also helps him
stay away from things that are considered as
immoral, things that are not right.
And this is also found in the Qur
'an when Allah says,
Salat has this capacity to stop
a person from doing sins, committing immoral acts.
Now a person may say that, well I
pray salat, and I still do things that
are wrong, then how, you know, make some
sense out of this.
And the ulema they say that it's simple,
probably your salat is not at the level
where it needs to be.
Or our salat is not there at the
level where it needs to be, where it
can stop us from committing fahsha.
Because if our salat was there, there's nothing
wrong with the promise of Allah.
When Allah says in the Qur'an that
this is the power of salat and ibadah,
that means that there's something wrong with our
salat.
There's nothing wrong with the principles of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So this is number two.
Number three that we need to understand when
it comes to ibadah, it is that it
is a source of bringing us closer to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And that means brothers and sisters, that no
matter what situation we're going through in life,
there could be issue after issue, challenge after
challenge.
The question is, what is that one thing
that we can do that we can seek
the help of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
and that is through ibadah.
And the best thing that we find in
the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
And before I go into the story, I
want you to first of all understand, in
the life of the Prophet ﷺ, there was
a year known as عام الحزن.
You know when a person is going through
some challenges, and in fact if you see
the Prophet ﷺ, Khadijah passed away, Abu Talib
passed away, they passed away within the span
of around a month and a half to
two months.
Now someone could have said that these were
the two months of grief for the Prophet
ﷺ.
But no, that's not what is mentioned in
the seerah.
It is mentioned
عام الحزن means a year of sorrow.
Meaning that for the Prophet ﷺ, there was
setback after setback after setback.
And for how long?
For a year.
It's called the year of عام الحزن.
Of course later on Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala did bring relief to the Prophet ﷺ
when He took him to Isra wal Mi
'raj.
But when He took him to Al-Isra
wal Mi'raj, what did He give to
the Prophet ﷺ?
Did He give him a pill?
That you take this and your problems will
go away?
No, He gave him five times daily salat.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is watching the
Prophet ﷺ going through struggles in his life.
What did He give him as a solution,
as a prescription?
He gave him the five times daily salat.
Jibreel ﷺ came to the Prophet ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ comes back at the time
of Fajr.
At that day, at Dhuhr time, Jibreel ﷺ
comes and he prays Dhuhr at the beginning
of Dhuhr time, and Asr at the beginning
of Asr time, and Maghrib, and Isha, and
Fajr, all at the beginning time.
The next day he comes, and he prays
each of these prayers, Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib,
Isha, and the next day Fajr after that,
all at the end times.
And he says that these are the times
of salat for you and for your ummah.
Meaning that this is where we will find
that solace.
When the Prophet ﷺ was in Ta'if,
and he is being stoned, his feet is
covered with blood.
At that time, what did he do?
He prayed salat.
He turned to Allah ﷻ in ibadah.
So this is why whenever we find ourselves
setback after setback in life, and this happens
to many of us.
You get out of one problem, another problem
presents itself, and you feel like that you
cannot catch a break in life.
Well, this is the time we turn to
Allah ﷻ in our salat.
But let me make this one thing clear
also, brothers and sisters, because you and I,
we have a very big misunderstanding when it
comes to ibadah, and that brings me to
point number four.
Point number four is, that when it comes
to ibadah, our ibadah is not transactional.
See, you can go to a store, you
can give money and buy a product.
You pay money, you get a loaf of
bread.
It's simple as that.
When it comes to our relationship with Allah,
many of us are under this mindset and
assumption that I pray salat, I read Qur
'an, I do dhikr.
Why is Allah doing all this to me?
So then what does the person do?
He's like, you know what?
I'm not gonna pray salat anymore.
I'm not gonna read Qur'an anymore.
I'm not gonna do dhikr anymore.
If this is what Allah is doing to
me, I'm gonna do this back to Allah
ﷻ.
And we need to understand, once again, when
it comes to our relationship with Allah, our
relationship with Allah is not transactional.
This is our purpose of life.
Even if Allah brought upon us challenges for
the rest of our life, and may Allah
never bring that upon us.
And may Allah ﷻ help us in our
affairs.
I mean, Rabbul Alameen.
But even brothers and sisters, I want you
to understand.
We all need to understand this.
Even if Allah brought upon us challenges after
challenges, no person can say that, you know
what?
This is unfair.
Why is Allah doing this to me?
Why is Allah doing this to me?
In fact, you know how many stories I've
heard also?
That where, like for example, there's an issue
between, you have a lot of parents, for
example.
Parents keep on coming to their children, pray
salat, pray salat, pray salat.
And a lot of times the youth, the
kids, they get always like, they get worked
up about it, they get tired about it,
man.
My parents, they keep on nagging at me,
they keep on nagging at me, pray salat,
pray salat, pray salat.
So you know what happens a lot of
times?
When there's an issue between the parents and
the children, a lot of times the children
are gonna be like, you know what?
You want me to pray salat?
I'm not gonna pray salat.
Because me not praying salat is gonna hurt
you.
You're not gonna like it.
Well, to our young brothers and sisters, who
feel like that you're causing any kind of
pain to your parents, because if you're not
praying salat, listen this very carefully, you're only
hurting yourself.
You are hurting yourself, you're not hurting your
parents.
Your parents are gonna be a little upset
that you're not praying salat.
But ultimately, you are hurting yourself.
Because when you use the ibadah, when you
use Qur'an, when you use dhikr, when
you use salat as a weapon, I mean
think about, what do you think about Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala?
What do you think Allah thinks of us
when we weaponize ibadah, when it comes to
other people, when it comes to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala?
Yet how many of us, when it comes
to our relationship with Allah, you know what?
I'm gonna leave it.
Well, guess what?
Allah does not need our ibadah.
There's a hadith of Qudsi, where Allah subhanahu
If the first of
you and the last of you, and the
men and the jinn and the human race,
Even if the entire
world comes together, and they become the most
righteous, this does not increase in the majesty
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Unlike other governments.
Imagine if the entire, on the flip side,
Allah says in the hadith of Qudsi,
Even if everyone were to turn
wicked, and they were to turn rebellious against
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, this does not
affect Allah in any capacity.
If a person says, you know what, Allah
is doing this to me, I'm not gonna
praise Allah anymore.
Buddy, you're not doing anything harmful to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
You're only hurting yourself.
You are putting yourself in danger.
You are showing your arrogance, we are showing
our arrogance to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
How do we expect Allah to then to
help us?
When you look at a government, if the
entire government, or when you saw even last
time, when there was a change of power,
we saw what happened in January 6th, Capitol
Hill and so forth.
How many people they came and they stormed
the Capitol building?
And we saw what happened.
And it got out of hand and so
forth.
Some of them may have died and so
forth.
And there was cases after this that took
place.
People who were in prison and so forth.
This is not the case when it comes
to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
If the entire world turn rebellious against Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala, it will not affect
Allah in any capacity.
So this is why brothers and sisters, our
relationship with Allah is not transactional.
It is our purpose of life.
We have to worship Allah whether we like
it or not.
And if Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is
bringing a challenge upon us, I remember one
time, I was sitting down with my teacher,
he said something interesting.
He said, that sometimes in life, you want
something so bad.
You want something so bad.
But Allah in His infinite wisdom knows that
if He gave you that, then the way
you are making dua to Allah, the way
you are so submissive to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, that level of submissiveness will be
depleted from your life.
It will be gone from your life.
Perhaps Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows within
His own infinite wisdom that this is not
good for you.
But we keep on asking Allah and when
we don't get it, we weaponize the ibadah.
And we use ibadah as a weapon.
And once again, we need to understand that
this is the wrong approach when it comes
to ibadah.
I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
grant all of us tawfiq to come closer
to Him through ibadah.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make our
Quran recitation more meaningful.
May Allah make our ibadah meaningful.
May Allah make our salat more meaningful.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make our
Quran recitation more meaningful and more impactful in
our life.
I want to conclude with a
quote that I came across of Imam Shafi
'i رحمة الله عليه Imam Shafi'i رحمة
الله عليه was a great, in addition to
him being a great scholar of Quran, of
Hadith, of Fiqh and so forth but one
of the other things that many of us
are not aware of Imam Shafi'i was
that he was a great poet and there's
a very beautiful quote of his I want
to share with you He says دعي الأيام
Let the days pass as they may and
you be content when the fate decrees its
Do not despair when there are nights
when you're going through troubles and trials because
nothing in this dunya is eternal وكن رجلا
Be steadfast
and upright in the face of calamity and
let generosity and loyalty be your way of
If your heart is content
with what Allah has decreed then you and
any other king are on the same page
and you're both equal So this is a
very beautiful quote once again Imam Shafi'i
talking about the struggles of this dunya and
how we need to keep on coming back
to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and especially
at the very end he says that if
a person is content with what Allah has
given you might be living in a small
home but the person who is considered as
the king or the president whoever it is
you're on the same page Why?
Because he has found content with what he
has but you have found content with the
qadr of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala May
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us from
amongst His ibad May Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala take us from this dunya when He
is most pleased with us
