Today is our final,
part of the adab series that we have
covered,
so far. And today, inshallah, we're talking about
a very important aspect of our life, that
we have to observe the adab of Rasulullah
salallahu alaihi wa sallam, and that is the
etiquette of using the restroom.
So, first of all, is that Salman al
Farsi he mentions
that one time a man came to him
and said, that your Prophet has taught everything
in your life. And by the way, subhanallah,
you know, there's a lot of things that
you will come across on social media.
And things that are done in different religions,
and and so forth. And wallahi, anytime you
see these kind of things,
you say one thing,
Islam. Allah has given us Islam, and because
of this, is such a great honor from
Allah
Because if you see the jahiriya practices of
many different religions,
Alhamdulillah, Allah made us Muslims. And as being
a Muslim, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala gave us
the life of Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa sallam,
who taught us how to do every single
thing in our life, including
going and using the restroom, and taking care
of this need and necessity of ours. First
of all is, we learn from the hadith
in Sahih Muslim
about the importance of making sure
we are not facing the qibla when using
our restrooms. So this is something that is
very important.
Now, Alhamdulillah, when it comes to masajid, they're
very particular about these kind of things. But
especially when you're going and buying a new
home, or you're building a home, you have
to make sure of these kind of things,
making sure that the bathroom and the toilet
is is put in a way where neither
the front nor the back of a person
is facing,
the qiblah. So this is something that's, extremely
important.
Number 2, something else that we learned from
the Hadith of Rasulullah
and this is found in the hadith narrated
by Abu Hurayrah
and Hafsah
that Rasulullah
Rasulullah
has taught us, that when it comes to
using the restroom and cleaning ourselves,
and especially if we're going to come in
contact with filth, we always use our left
hand, and not not our right hand. Now,
a lot of times you will see children
that we don't understand these kind of things,
so they're using any kind of hand. We
have to constantly teach our children that when
you go to the restroom, and you have
to clean yourself,
use the left hand as much as you
can. In fact, that should be the only.
In dire cases, of course if you have
to use the right one, then you have
to use the right one. Then we also
find the hadith narrated by Anas
that about the prophet
making
sure that when it would came down to
uncovering the aura, he make sure that the
doors are closed. It's a private and secure
location.
And you have to understand that long time
ago, they never had bathrooms like we have
today. So, if they would have to go
far away,
and they never had lights like we have.
So sometimes they will go a little further
away, an area that was perhaps, you know,
vacant,
no one was there, and then they would
use a restroom. And that is why, subhanallah,
you'll find in the books of fiqh, that
when you're about to use a restroom, make
sure that there are no harmful animals around
and so forth. I remember when I was
growing up and reading
I never made sense to me because we're
trying to see things from our perspective, from
our lens. But if you see things from
their lens, and by the way, this is
still the situation
and many, you know, poor villages in the,
you know, whether they are the middle eastern
countries or the subcontinent countries, where there is
extreme poverty, you'll find these kind of things
still going on till today. So that is
why making sure that there is no one
around. Now in our context, in our current
situation,
making sure that Especially when you look at
the bathrooms today, in most public spaces,
wallahi, the way the doors are structured, and
the way the the bathroom stalls are stalls
are built, there is no privacy. You understand?
There is a small slit in the middle
where people can come and see. That is
why we always try to make sure that
we go to use a restroom
at a place where there is no one
around, and trying to use a situation like
this. Now, I've talked about this before. I'm
not gonna go into this too much. But
I've also emphasized in the past, that when
it comes to our kids, and especially if
they play sports,
you know that when it comes to sports
and sports athletes, a lot of times there
is a lack of. Okay? There's an absolute
lack of. And not only that, when you
go to many gyms.
There's some kind of gyms I used to
go to, and I basically, you know, I
I cancelled my membership because you would go
to this kind of locker rooms, and people
are just, you know, walking around without any
clothes. Once again, our dean has taught us,
And not only that, but we have to
teach our kids that
that even when it comes to, you know,
when people play sports, and they go, and
they take showers, and they open, you know,
they expose themselves in front of everyone else.
This is not part of our Deen. I
don't care if you're playing sports or not,
but we have to teach our kids that
if you need to take a shower, you
need to expose yourself, you do it in
a closed space where no one is watching
you. Wallahi,
this is my personal belief, you may disagree
with me. But the lack of Hayat that
we see today here in America, is because
of these kind of things. Do you understand?
There is just no Hayat. And that's why
there's a saying,
If you have no haya, then do whatever
you want. Haya is an integral it's an
integral part of our deen. As Rasulullah
says,
is an aspect of iman. So that is
why we have to really emphasize when it
comes to clothing and so forth, we have
to always emphasize on
hiya. Next one is, when you enter into
the restroom,
making sure you enter with the left foot,
and there is a dua of Rasulullah
On your way out, you exit with the
right foot, and you can say,
If that is all that you know, the
is
also good. We also learn from
the
hadith. So if you just want to say,
that is also sufficient. But making sure that
when we leave, enter the restroom, the Dua,
when we leave the restroom, make sure we
read the Dua.
Also, it's very
important, especially when we comes to now when
it comes to home, we we know that
our bathrooms are usually clean. And you can
walk inside the restroom without any kind of
slippers.
But we have to make sure, especially especially
when it comes to public restrooms. And by
the way, a masjid is a public restroom
too. Making sure
you wear some slippers. Number 1. Okay? I've
seen kids over here walking in with no
slippers, just barefoot. Okay?
I remember when I was one time, when
I went for Umrah, and you know, when
we're coming from Madinah to Makkah, we had
to stop at a place.
And I saw people, adults walking into restrooms.
These are like dirty places
without any slippers and so forth. So public
restrooms, making sure that we always have slippers
on, but I'm going to add one more
thing to this,
and that is,
when it comes to public restrooms, not everyone
abides by the rules. And especially here, even
kids may use a restroom.
I'm gonna talk about the other issue about
standing up and urinating. I won't talk about
that, but a lot of times, because they're
not very careful,
they could be urine in the slippers.
Okay? And a lot of times as adults,
what we may do is we might wear
our socks. We have socks on. We wear
the slippers. We go inside the restroom. We
have no idea what could be inside those
slippers. You understand? That is why it's always
We always take the higher road. We always
try to be more careful as a Muslim.
That is why my advice is, if you're
using a public restroom,
try to take off your socks before you
wear the slippers. It's just to be on
the safer side. Okay? If you're wearing those
socks, and you wear those sippers, and you
use the restroom, my advice will be is,
do not make do not do masa on
those socks, and then come inside the masjid.
Just take off the socks because once again,
you wanna be absolutely careful as you can.
Now, in addition to that, when we talked
about standing up and urinating,
many of our children do stand up and
urinate. Now, if the place there is by
the way,
in the Hadith of Rasulullah SAWALAWA LAW SALAM,
I remember we we studied this when we
were, studying, with our teacher.
There are some ahadith of the Prophet that
talk about, that he stood up and urinated.
But that was not the that was not
the the normal situation with Rasulullah
In fact, Samdulullah Mahdi explained in those ahadith,
that perhaps at that time, the prophet went
to a place where it was extremely dirty,
and he knew that if he stood and
he squatted Once again, they never had bathrooms
like we have today, so they would always
squat down. If he squatted,
then he could actually, you know, he could
get hurt by something, or it was so
dirty that his clothes would get dirty, that's
why he probably stood up and urinated.
Otherwise,
otherwise, the the natural
way of Rasulullah
was
that he would always sit down and urinate.
Now,
I know you may ask this question that
what if you go to a public space?
Okay?
The best thing to do is, if you
can, take a You know, a lot of
places when you go, they have the seat
covers. Right? Take a seat cover, sit on
the seat cover. Or if you can, take
a paper towel or a tissue paper, and
clean the toilet seat and sit down. Now
if you're just, you know, you're one of
those kind of like, you're you have this
what's the word I'm looking for? If you
have
this anxiety about, you know, touching the toilet
bowl seat and so forth, and you have
to just use the restroom and so forth,
and you do stand up, the theme is
that you have to keep in mind that
you clean yourself properly.
Why? Because people who go and they urinate
standing up, they're not cleaning themselves properly. And
the prophet
one time he was passing by a grave,
and the prophet said, that the people in
this grave
have are being punished,
is because they were not very careful when
it came to urine. Okay? That's why the
prophet says,
That stay away. Be very careful when it
comes to urine because a lot of times,
the punishment of the grave could be due
to not being careful when it comes to
urine. So that's why we have to make
sure Even we teach our children, you know,
children
are like supersonic. Go inside in the bathroom
when they're out. Okay? No cleaning, no washing
hands, no nothing. You understand? No. When they
go to the restroom, take your time. Okay?
You don't have to catch a train. Okay?
Take your time when you go inside, use
the restroom properly, you're done with your need,
wash your hands, clean up, and this is
something very key. Cleaning up after yourself.
Making sure that we teach our children, even
if they're at home, they walk inside,
and they see things around, clean up the
bathroom, and make it presentable for the next
person. You know, by the way, when I
went for Hajj a long time ago, I
very I emphasized upon this a lot. Because
when you have public restrooms in Mina, in
Arafa, in Muzdalifa, and things, you know, places
of that type, not many people are very
particular about cleanliness and adab. And I will
always teach my group that make sure you
do this. That when you go to the
restroom, clean it up a little, and make
it a little more presentable for the next
person. This is, you know, the bare minimum
that we can do when it comes to,
making sure that we when we're using the
restroom. Now, there is another question that usually
comes up is, do we have to cover
our head when using the restroom?
There are some ahadid, but those ahadid have
been classified as daweed
when it comes to,
making sure that the head is covered. However,
one thing that we do learn is that
some they
were very particular about these kind of things.
And some ulama later on, the tabi'een in
the tabi'een,
they were very particular about these kind of
things. Such as Ubaka
When he was Khalifa,
he addressed this, and he did say that
when I go into the restroom, I make
sure I keep my head covered. So the
ulama they say that you cannot consider it
as a as a sunnah, because a sunnah
is technically something that we learned from Rasulullah
alaihi wa sallam. There are some mursal ahadith
regarding this matter, but they said that it
is something that is recommended.
If you do it, good. If you don't
do it, no harm is done.
Another question that often comes up is that,
what if, you know, some people they walk
in with a chain, and a necklace that
says, Allah on it, and so forth. Okay?
Some The Ulema usually are split on this
matter. They they I mean, many Olama have
said that the better I mean, it is
better to just simply take it off, and
you know, just to take it off and
go inside the restroom. If you go inside,
once again, it's hard to say whether it
is sinning or not, but it is better
to take it off. At the same time,
many people they have asked about, you know,
Quran. The phone The Quran The Quran is
on the phone. Can we walk inside?
Yes, you can because it's a digital copy,
it's not the actual Quran.
One last thing I will say when it
comes to the bathroom. Okay?
Specially when it comes to our homes today,
you know that when you go to the
restroom, there's a separate, you know, there's a
separate door for using the restroom, and it's
a small location.
Even in that kind of situation, even if
the major doors in the bathroom are closed,
it is still better in Asan to keep
that door closed. Okay? When using the restroom.
Because sometimes kids can probably go by and
so forth. But keeping that doors closed. But
what's more important is this. 2 things, and
I'll finish on this inshallah. Number 1 is,
nowadays people are going to the restroom
and they're sitting on the restroom.
Okay.
They're sitting with their phones 10, 15, 20
minutes.
Use the restroom. Take care of your need
and out. This is something that's extremely important.
In addition to this, relate to the phone,
sitting on the phone and in the
bathroom.
You
know? Okay. You don't wanna do these kind
of things over there. You understand? So
no talking on the phone while you're inside.
Now, if you went inside. Okay. If you
went inside the restroom, you're talking. Try to
cut that conversation and go. But to sit
in the restroom, and constantly talking for minutes,
and sometimes it turns into many more minutes
and so forth. This is something that is
clearly not advisable
according to any fiqh, or any book of
hadith, or any book of Islam. So that
is why the restroom is a place where
we go to take care of our need.
We take care of the need, and we
come immediately out. And once again, just observe
all the sunnahs of Rasulullah,
all the adab of Rasulullah
and I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that
this series that we have covered in terms
of adab, may Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala grant
us the tawfiq to apply all these adab.
Once again, I'll I mean, the most important
thing once again, why did I cover this?
First of all, as a reminder for all
of us. But number 2, most importantly,
we have to teach our children.
Wallahi, if our children don't know these kind
of things, they won't be able to teach
it to the next generation. And give it
1 or 2 generations, and all these adab
and akhlaq, and so forth that we have,
that is the richness of our deen, will
Allah he will be lost. So that is
why let's make sure that as parents, we
teach this to our kids inshallah.
