Mustafa Khattab – Ramadan Is Over Now What

I bear with this that there's none worthy
of our worship except Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
And I bear witness that Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam is the seal of the prophets and
the final messenger
to all of humanity.
Whoever Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala guides, there's none
to misguide. And whoever Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
leads to stray, there's none to guide. Alright?
We start by praising Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
for giving us the opportunity in the month
of Ramadan to worship Him and to get
close to Him
and we thank Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala for
making it easy for us to worship Him
and to get our sins forgiven
and to increase our
in this month.
I'm going to start off with a story.
There was a man
who
built a you know, he bought a piece
of land and he started to build a
house.
It took him about a month.
So he put the foundations,
he raised the walls,
he put some flowers in the front some
fruit trees in the backyard,
apples and cherries and all the beautiful fruits
and from inside he put beautiful things,
you know,
he paved the house
ceramics,
marbles
and he put chandeliers.
He painted the walls. He put up carpets
all over the place. He puts on the
beds, everything.
MashaAllah, the house is fantastic.
And people were helping him. Alhamdulillah. He was
getting a lot of support.
Put the grass
everywhere,
and he put, you know, the water hoses,
and the bathtubs,
the kitchen, everything is in a perfect condition.
Rather than 1 month, he got this Bilbozer,
and he tore down everything.
So this is a metaphor for some people
who worship Allah
in the month of Ramadan. They pray 5
namaz a day, they fast for 17 18
hours, they stand up and you know for
salah at night, they give sadaqa and zakah,
Then after the month of Ramadan, they go
crazy.
They end up losing everything.
And the Prophet
spoke about this in an authentic Hadith, a
Sahih Muslim. The Prophet said,
Do you know who is the broke or
the bankrupt?
The people who filed for bankruptcy? The people
who are bankrupt in my Ummah? They said,
You Rasulullah They said, You Rasulullah, You Rasulullah
They said, You Rasulullah, the bankrupt among us,
the bank the broke among us, the
among us, the person who doesn't have a
dollar or a dinar, nothing, no money. And
the Prophet said no, the
bankrupt in my Ummah, is the one who
will
come on the day of judgement. Yes, they
prayed, they fasted, they gave salakat,
they did Hajj Masha'Allah.
But they come, and they insulted this, they
backbite that,
and they achieved that, they steal from that,
they end up losing everything.
It's just like when you put coins in
your pocket, you put a lot of money
in your pocket all the time, and you
have a hole at the bottom of your
pocket. You'll be losing the money all the
time. You will end up with nothing in
your, pockets.
So Ramadan is over, now what?
What do we do after the month of
Ramadan? We know that Allah
is the Lord of Ramadan, and He's the
Lord of January November, all the months.
Those who worship Ramadan,
Ramadan for them is holy, they're good in
the month of Ramadan, but they do bad
things after Ramadan, before Ramadan, they should know
that if you worship Ramadan, Ramadan is now
dead. Khalas.
But if you worship Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala,
He is the living. He never dies.
You
are the worshipper of Allah, not the worshipper
of Ramadan.
You should respect
Allah in Ramadan, after Ramadan, before Ramadan.
So this is the, this is the attitude
that we should have after the month of
Ramadan, and this is the focus of the
Khutba today, inshaAllah.
So what do we learn from the month
of Ramadan? InshaAllah, I'm gonna touch on some
of the things that we learned from the
month of Ramadan, and we carry over throughout
the year.
The Sahaba Radwanullah Alaihi, as I mentioned in
the last Khutba,
6 months before Ramadan they pray You Allah,
give us the life to witness the month
of Ramadan. And 6 months after Ramadan they
make dua You Allah accept our Ibal in
the month of Ramadan. So the whole year
evolves around the month of Ramadan.
Before I begin inshaAllah, I would like to
thank everyone for their contributions in the month
of Ramadan. So Alhamdulillah, in less than 2
weeks, we raised over half a $1,000,000 in
this Masjid. Takbir.
Takbir.
Takbir.
So with the help of Allah and your
contributions, we're able to pay off the loan
after 20 years. So this year Alhamdulillah, and
this Ramadan, and this Laylatul Qadr, after that
no loan, no more Riba on the Masjid
Alhamdulillah. So this Masjid is loan free, walhamdulillah.
So we thank you for that, and we
ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to bless all
of you, and your families, and health and
wealth. Those who contributed,
and those who couldn't do it, just by
Niya, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will give you
their word.
So, the first thing we learn from the
Ramadan, and we touch on this,
in the first Khutba is Taqwa.
And I can't emphasize enough the importance of
Taqwa in the month of Ramadan, and all
year long.
I mentioned that in the 1st kutbah of
the month of Ramadan, that every single ayah
that talks about Ibadah,
in Surah Baqarah, it always ends with
Whether it talks about Siyam in Ramadan, whether
it talks about Salah, it talks about Hajj,
it talks about everything.
At the end it says, the purpose is
that you achieve Taqwa. Taqwa basically means, you
are mindful of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Before
you do anything,
you know that Allah is watching, and it's
gonna be recorded.
You know that Allah
will give you the reward at the end.
You know that you should do it sincerely
for the sake of Allah, because if you
do it for someone else, on the Day
of Judgment, and this is in Sayyid Al
Midi,
Allah
Allah will say, you did it for the
people, so you already got the reward in
Dunya. I got no reward for you in
Akhirah.
So we should keep Allah
in our minds every time.
When we develop this attitude, and this feeling
that Allah
SWT is watching you, and you develop this
attitude that this may be your last Ramadan,
this may be my last Shun'ah, this may,
may be the last salah I would do,
you will perfect it. Because we know that
with Allah
the last impression is what will last forever.
It's not like us. Right? And this is
why, SubhanAllah, when you do something good, your
whole life,
and you do one bad thing at the
end, people will forget all the good that
you have done. He has never done any
good thing to me.
But with Allah
it's different. You do bad things,
and if you do at the end, or
you make tawbah, you say: Allah
will forget everything before, just for one good
thing at the end.
The problem is, we never know when the
end will be. So, we should keep this
attitude that Allah
is watching, and you never know if you're
gonna be here until next year, or next
Ramadan. Allah
If
you go to work, you work for a
company,
and you know that your boss is over
your shoulder,
or there is a surveillance camera over your
shoulder, you'll be working hard, like crazy. You're
on fire. Why? Because you know someone is
watching. And Allah
never sleeps.
If you have this attitude that He knows
everything, He sees everything, then you'll be working
hard.
But if you know that your boss is
on vacation all the time, he's always playing
golf, he never comes to the office,
no one is watching you,
surveillance camera is out of service, then you'll
be playing cards with your computer, you're on
Facebook all the time, you're not doing the
right thing.
Same thing when we forget that Allah
is watching us, people will always do the
bad things, because there's no accountability,
this is what they think.
So, this is the meaning of Taqwa. You
are mindful of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala all
the time.
Number 2, the things that we learn from
the month of Ramadan, we're gonna touch with
a few of them, is, I mentioned that
the Haydaraq in Islam always evolve around will
revolve around unity among Muslims.
You get more than once if you pray
in Jannah. If you pray by yourself, you
get much less.
When you give Zakat, the rich will give
to the poor. One half who are rich,
or 1 third who are rich, will give
to the 2 thirds who are poor.
You fast Ramadan together, you break your fast
together.
When you go for Hajj, you go with
everyone at the same time, you're all in
the same place. You can't just go anywhere,
I'm gonna go to Egypt this year for
Hajj. No. It has to be in one
place, and you can't go in July, you
can't go in February. It has to be
at the same time, same place for everyone.
Because Islam is all about bringing people together.
And SubhanAllah,
sometimes,
we use Ibadah to divide people, and fight.
So, people will fight for example over the
beginning of Ramadan, and so on and so
forth. So what? Alhamdulillah, the Sahaba,
they start those of them who went to
other places like Syria, Hashem,
they have the beginning of Ramadan on Monday
for example, and those in Madinah and Mecca,
they had it on Sunday. It's not a
big deal. And those who were in Hashem
in Syria, Palestine, Lebanon,
Jordan, in that area, they had their aid,
for example, Wednesday,
and those who were in Mecca and Medina,
they had it on Tuesday. It's not a
big deal. Alhamdulillah.
I wish all Muslims started their fasts on
the same day, and they had their Eid
on the same day. I wish. This is
my hope, and I hope that I will
see this before I go, insha'Allah.
But,
if those in Turkey had Eid on Tuesday,
those who in,
India or Egypt or Libya, they have their
Eid on Wednesday, and those in Pakistan, they
have their Eid on Thursday.
What is the big deal? Alhamdulillah, instead of
1 Eid, we have 3 Eid. It's not
a big deal. So we should tolerate each
other. Yes, we wish for unity, we pray
for unity, but we shouldn't take our Eids
or the beginnings of Ramadan for fighting and
conflict among Muslims. Because the Sahaba did the
same thing. And hopefully that Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala will accept from us Ameel
Ameel.
Number 3.
We learn Sabra from Ramadan. Ramadan is about
Sabra.
It is not easy to fast for 18
hours.
And I mentioned the brothers in Iceland, and
the sisters in Iceland, they fast for 22
and a half hours. That's a long time.
We fast for 17 hours. In Edmonton, 18
and a half. Right? So this is a
long time. I understand.
And it gets very hot in the summertime.
You're thirsty,
you're dizzy, and the nights are very short,
you don't get enough sleep, but you have
to go to the masjids for Marib, Urisha
and Taraweeh. It's very tough. But Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala will give you the reward based
on the difficulty of the Ibad. And it's
gonna pay off when it's winter time.
In winter time, the nights will get very
long. You have about 15, 16 hours between
Isha and Farsh. The day will be very
short. So it's gonna pay back. The brothers
in Iceland, the days would the day would
be like 3 hours, and the night would
be 21 hours.
You know, so it pays back, Alhamdulillah. We're
getting there, next year,
Ramadan would be in the spring for about
10 years, and it's gonna be in the
winter for another 10 years. So Alhamdulillah, the
difficult days are behind us.
And the good and the easy days inshaAllah
are coming ahead. So we should be grateful
to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala for making it
easy. Now imagine if Ramadan was always on
July.
That would have been a disaster. All of
us would have moved to Argentina. They fast
8 and a half hours.
Or Australia, about the same number of hours.
But Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, kareem, because, you
know, the times change. Winter, spring, fall, and
as I mentioned one time, the Hikmah, just
like when you pray in the Masjid,
you pray in different spots, you shouldn't limit
yourself to one spot,
because all these different spots will make Shafa'ah
witness for you in the Day of Judgment.
You Allah! He prayed here right, He prayed
left, He prayed in the back, He prayed
in the front. So the whole carpet will
witness for you.
Because some of us, they like to pray
in a certain spot. If they come late,
and someone took their spot, Hey,
move. It's my spot.
Come on.
They will make Shafa'ah for you. Same is
also true for Ramadan in winter, it will
make Shafa'ah for you. Ramadan in
the
fall will make Shafa'ah for you. Alhamdulillah.
It's all from Allah
There are 3 types of Supper, one day
inshallah and one footbath of Allah gives us
the life. We talk about the different types
of Supper. But one of the, greatest types
of Sabr is Sabr when you do Ibadah.
It's not easy when you wake up at
3 in the morning to have Saharan,
pray Fajr.
It's not easy that you go to work,
and you have to ask them all the
time to come for Jum'ah I know it
is not convenient for some people, it is
not
sabr for Ibadah.
There's sabr for difficult times, if you lose
your job, someone dies, and there's sabr to
protect yourself from something harm. You know the
story of Yusuf alaihis salaam in the Quran,
when the lady was busting all the moose,
and come here, and all that stuff. And
he protected himself. So this is another type
of Sabrul, we'll talk about that in the
future insha'Allah.
Lesson number 4,
is
So when this Ayah was revealed,
the Ayah talks about the people of Taqwa,
the people of Allah. They are the ones
who fast, and,
those when they do something good, they are
afraid that their deeds will not be accepted.
So Aisha radiAllahu 'ala said, You Rasulullah, does
it talk about the people who fast and
pray and give Zakah and Hajj? He said,
No.
She said, it isn't about the people who,
steal and the people who commit zinai. The
Prophet said, no. It talks about the people
who do good deeds like salatah and siyam
and prayers, but they are afraid that they
are not doing enough,
and they are afraid that Allah will not
accept them. They are the ones that Allah
will accept from them. Because every time, they
will try to do a better next time,
they will try to do a better job
next time. When I pray, I will perfect
my salah. When I fast, I will perfect
my fasting, and so on and so forth.
So we spoke about Tawwa, we spoke about,
unity, and Sabr,
and we spoke about Al Khawfu Ar Raja.
A hope and a fear.
Number 5: Al Mudawama
Consistency.
And this is something that the Prophet
mentioned in the hadith, that one of the
things that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala loves the
most, is that when you are consistent.
You do things consistently.
How?
When you say for example, you pray before
you sleep, even if it's 1 hour, the,
one salaat, 1 rakah.
The minimum for Piyam at night is 1
rakah. This is the minimum.
Like after 'isha, minimum 1 rakat, qiyam. This
is acceptable in the Sunnah. There is no
maximum. You can pray 10, you can pray
20, 50. It's up to you. The Prophet
SAW always prayed piyam, 11 rakat.
8 with 3. In Ramadan, outside Ramadan, this
is what he did all the time. But
again, the Prophet SAW did what can be
afforded by most people. If you want to
pray 2 or 4, and went
20, and went 3. It's up to you.
Alhamdulillah. It's open. Especially in the special times
like in the month of Ramadan, hoping to
get more rewards, inshaAllah.
So pray 5 times namaz
You pray a little bit at night, you
read Qur'an, and so on and so forth.
The consistency. Allah
says
according to the Hadith of the Prophet
The most loving deeds or beloved deeds of
Allah
are the ones that are consistent,
even if they are very small.
Read a little bit of Quran after salah,
alhamdulillah. Give a little bit salatah, like $1
a day, alhamdulillah.
Because some people,
especially when they start their Hidayah, every one
of us has our Jahiliyah days. When they
start, I have I'm gonna stand the whole
night in salah, I will give $1,000
every day, I'll be fasting every single day
in that year,
and after 2 weeks,
they fall down, they collapse. They can't do
it. And this is why the Prophet SAW
said, do a little bit every day, but
be consistent. Something that you can afford, and
this is something that Allah Subhana Wa Ta'la
loves. We ask Allah Subhana Wa Ta'la to
give us the best in this duniya,
Alhamdulillah, many of us have done their job
in the month of Ramadan.
Reading Quran,
praying on time, fasting for the sake of
Allah, giving sadaqah.
And Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is giving us
the proof in the month of Ramadan, that
yes, you can read Quran after Ramadan. What
is the proof? You were doing it 30
days in the month. You were listening to
Quran in tarawih.
You didn't smoke for 30 days during the
day. You can quit after Ramadan. If you
have a commitment, you have the resolve, you
can do it! What is the proof?
You did it till Ramadan.
You can't give Zakah and Sadatah, help the
poor, give Iftar to the people who are
fasting.
What is the proof? Because you did it
in the month of Ramadan.
And we need the spirit after the month
of Ramadan.
A lot of refugees are coming to this
country, from Syria, from Iraq, from other places,
and they need our help. They're our brothers
and sisters, and I've seen a lot of
churches,
and a lot of masjids are helping. Alhamdulillah,
this is something good. So we need to
do our best, because there are 1,000 who
are coming, and they need everyone's help.
So the brothers and the sisters in the
community need to reach out to our Syrian
brothers and sisters who are coming and to
help them. They need our help. They suffered
a lot from injustice,
and from rejection in some places in Europe
and elsewhere,
many have drowned. So we need to reach
out and help them, and show them the
way to the Masjid, and and reach out
to them Insha'Allah.
The last thing I want to say,
in Islam.
Discipline after the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan. We learn from Islam, we learn discipline.
Right?
1 minute before Ma'rib, you can't eat.
1 minute after Adar and Ma'rib, you should
eat.
If you eat 1 minute before your fasting
is not valid. If you make fasting after
Adhan Al Marib, then
Allah
SWT. What will happen? Before Fazr,
you should eat until Adhan.
And after Adhan, you shouldn't eat. If you
eat 1 or 2 minutes after hearing the
Adhan, you'll be in trouble.
Zakatul Futtr! You can't pay Zakatul Futtr after
Eid, it has to be before. There are
certain times for salah. Salahatam karaatamumina
kitaabamumputr! There are certain times we learn discipline
in Islam. Islam is all about discipline. And
this is something we should learn from Ramadan,
and carry over to the whole year.
The way we deal with each other, discipline.
Because sometimes,
when we deal with non Muslims, you take
an appointment with a doctor or someone, a
non Muslim, gonna meet you at 2 sharp.
5 minutes before 2, you are there.
But if you're gonna visit a Muslim brother,
InshaAllah, I'll meet you after Asr.
And they come to you, like, 2 minutes
before Madrip. Brother, you said after Asr.
Yeah. I came before Yeah. I came after
Asr.
That's 3 hours after Asr. Yeah. But technically,
I'm correct.
No. We have to learn discipline.
Because people, they prepare their house, they, you
know, prepare their life to receive you, so
you should be in one time.
The way you park your car, just when
you go outside, take some pictures of how
people park, they block the fire hydrant, and
they block other cars. It's a big disaster.
Can you do this at Tim Hortons?
I'm challenging you. Wallah, you pay like $250.
When you go to Tim Hortons or Walmart,
everyone is parked like, perfect.
Mashallah.
They get out of the car, they're like,
they are like this to the line, No,
no, no, I'm gonna, you know, center it
this way, that way, and your wife will
stand in the front row. Right? Left! No,
no, no! Front, back,
Why? We need to have this, you know,
this attitude when we come to the masjid.
You come inside
I haven't seen this here, Alhamdulillah. But in
other masjids, you see like there's a shufer.
Like, shuos are all over the place. You
can't even walk, and the brothers and sisters
with this ability, they have a hard time
to navigate
through the shoes.
You know, and all these things.
We ask people all the time, Would you
please turn off your phones when you'll start
salah? Whatever. You start a salah, and then
turn it inside the salah. Ten phones. And
Adan, in the middle of salah. You keep
reminding people. And SubhanAllah, Allah, I'm not trying
to offend anyone. I get invitations all the
time in churches and other places of worship.
You go to read my CV, like, 30
churches. I go all the time. I never
heard a phone ring over there. And again,
I'm not trying to look down on anyone,
or offend anyone, but this is the attitude
we should learn from Islam, and the month
of Ramadan.
Yes, I said that I never heard a
phone ring in, in a church, but actually,
I made a mistake. I heard one phone
ring in, in a church one time,
but it was a Muslim brother.
He was another imam. And it was Duratime,
it's like 120,
and the priest was talking about brotherhood, and
all this stuff, we should tolerate each other.
And in the middle, the event went off.
All lower, and very loud. And the brother
was trying to, you know, turn it off,
and he couldn't for some reason. He was
nervous or something.
And you know the aptitude, when the people
hear Allahu Akbar loud in a place, oh,
he's gonna blow himself up.
It
was a disaster.
SubhanAllah.
So this is the aptitude that we should
have, we should learn from the month of
Ramadan, discipline.
On time, everything is on time with Allah
You have to do things on time, like
salah, like fasting, like counselling.
Ramadan evolves around discipline, and this is something
we should learn from this month. We ask
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to accept our rabah
in the month of Allah. We ask Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to everything
completely,
sincerely, purely for his sake. Ameen Ameen. Before
we start the salah, I'm gonna remind you
of the Ayi, Anatolia Ayi festival tomorrow here
in the Masjid Insha'Allah. We're gonna start at
10 AM, and we'll go all the way
to 8 PM. This is special time, everyone
is welcome, bring your family and friends. And
as I always say, that our kids who
go to school, to the public system,
they see their non Muslim colleagues and friends
celebrating all the time. Time. Halloween, Christmas, Valentine,
this, that, Thanksgiving.
Every other day, there is something. In Islam,
we have tureeds.
So make sure that your kids will have
a fabulous
holiday, and enjoy the Eid. Give them gifts.
Take them out, Alhamdulillah. Make them enjoy Eid
to the fullest, as long as we're doing
the right thing. Alhamdulillah.
Make it very special for them, so they
don't have to look at their friends and
say, Oh, we're miserable, we don't enjoy. No,
no, no, no. We enjoy. In Islam, we
have time for everything. Time to play,
and time to pray. So Islam is about
discipline, and it's about organization.
