Mustafa Khattab – Blind Hearts
AI: Summary ©
The heart is crucial to the actions of believers, as it is the heart for religion and the meaning of the word " sight." The three types of heart conditions, including the living heart, sick heart, and dead heart, are discussed. The importance of understanding each type and leaving cars in the front of the door is emphasized. The speaker gives examples of how different types of people have different needs and benefits in the dams, emphasizing the importance of rebuilding the heart and achieving happiness in the dams.
AI: Summary ©
Again,
In the name of Allah, the most gracious,
most merciful,
all praise is due to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala. We praise Him, and we seek His
forgiveness and assistance,
and we take refuge in Him from the
evils of ourselves
and our shortcomings.
Whomever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala guides, there is
none to misguide, and whomever Allah
needs to go astray, there is none to
guide.
So Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says, oh you
who believe,
be mindful of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and
don't die
unless you are in a state of complete
Islam or submission to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
Now am I supposed to speak in English
or Somali? Both. Because I don't. Both. Both?
Okay.
Okay.
We'll save this for tomorrow, khalas.
Inshallah, I'm going to be leaving in about
a month for good. I'm going back to
Egypt
and,
I need to finish my PhD so I
can serve Islam in a better way.
I'm going to miss a lot of people
and a lot of things in the city.
Of course, the Somali community is one of
the communities that I'll be missing
and I'll miss the, chicken sukkar and the
beef sukkar and the k k and
barista and all that stuff and eating my
food with banana.
That was a good part.
But one thing I will never miss,
the good weather.
Okay.
So
today's topic, I'm gonna talk for about 20
minutes plus GST, that's for 45 minutes.
So,
45 minutes, InshaAllah. I'll be talking about the
heart,
the treasure of the heart,
how we can make our hearts living, and
how our hearts die,
and how to revive them. And the heart
is the most important organ in the body.
So the Prophet SAW says, there is a
peace in the body that is the most
important one.
If it is sound and safe
and healthy, then the whole body is good
and healthy.
But if it is messed up, then the
whole body is messed up.
And the prophet says,
It is the heart.
There are a lot of functions for the
heart in the body.
More than,
love, the emotion of love because
the love is always associated with the heart.
And they have the saying back home that
why in the world
the lady is dedicated to 1 man and
she loves only 1 man in her life
and,
the man loves so many people.
They say this is because the man's heart
or the lady's heart is like a mango,
it has one seed,
but the man's heart is like a watermelon,
it's full of seeds.
But some watermelons are seedless, Okay? They have
no love for no one. So Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala tells us in the Quran
that people should think and reflect with their
hearts.
So some people have hearts, but they don't
have the ability to reflect and think and
make sense of things.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us that
some people are blind in this world, they
are blind in this dunya,
not because of their eyes but because of
their hearts.
Their hearts are blind.
So this is why it is very relevant,
it is very important to speak about the
heart tonight and tomorrow, inshaAllah.
Change.
So if you know a little bit about
Arabic, the word
is heart, is derived from the word
to change or to flip.
And the word insan,
human being, is taken from the word which
means to forget.
And the word
money
is taken from the word
which is to deviate.
Because if you follow the money, it will
make you deviate.
And also the meaning of the word dunya,
the lower part or the basement of something.
So Jannah or Akhirah is the highest place
and Dunya is the lowest place, the basement
of the basement. So if we understand the
meaning of the words in Arabic, then we'll
be able to, you know, act accordingly.
So
So, Imam Ibn Khayyim divided hearts into 3
types. The first one, the living hearts.
Number 2, the sick hearts. And number 3,
the dead hearts.
Okay?
So, it's very important to understand
these 3 different types to,
to to figure out where you are and
what you need to to do
to make your heart a living and healthy
one.
The living heart is the heart of a
a a a a believer.
The sick heart
is the heart of a disobedient
believer.
Say it. You know, the first time, if
you just give them a reminder of Allah
and Asilah and Jannah,
okay? They come back and they return to
Allah and they repent.
But the second time,
they are the people who have sick hearts.
If they had a bad company,
then they deviate.
If they have a good company and someone
gives them Naseeha, advice
with sincerity,
then their hearts become safe and healthy again.
Then you have the 3rd type which is
al kalbul maid, the dead heart. No matter
how you remind them about Allah subhanahu ta'ala,
no matter how hard you try to teach
them about different things, you give them nasiha,
they don't listen.
Brothers and sisters,
there are some people they blocking especially the
big van
in the front of the door. They broke
the all the cars. There's some people they
living now.
So please
leave those cars as soon as possible.
The
the first one is a pdc1372.
Another
one, not
19 m o 12. Please leave now. Those
cars, there were some people they're outside. They're
waiting
to move those cars.
Otherwise,
please please
the
cars
barking properly.
Because I don't wanna all the time coming
the Imam and interpreting the lectures.
I'm pleased
everyone,
they have much responsibility, the cars.
So
some people they leaving or maybe they working
or they going somewhere.
I'm gonna come
from
my
heart.
No problem.
Taib.
Yeah. You look at this guy, he's standing
in the line and these are some examples
to show you what I mean by dead
hearts.
There's this person who's standing in the line
behind the imam and the imam is reciting
some ayahs about the suffering, and the choking,
and the burning, and the barbecue people in
hellfire,
and the people are crying, and all those
whose brother can understand Arabic,
but he's not paying attention. He's thinking about
his business, he's thinking about summer vacation,
he's not paying attention.
And so on and so forth, when people
see someone,
Yani see Janaza in the Masjid,
then they continue talking about different things, about
business and they crack jokes as if death
doesn't mean anything to them.
So there's something wrong with their hearts. They
have to think seriously about changing this condition.
The person who hears the Adhan 5 times
a day
and he keeps playing soccer or video games,
and he doesn't go and pray.
I really don't know what to say because
personally and quite frankly,
I think this person who hears the Adhan
5 times a day and doesn't
pray,
for me he is worse than the shaitan.
Why?
Go back to the story of Adam and
Iblis in you know, when Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala created Adam and he commanded
the, you know, the, angels to make sujood
to Adam alaihis salam. The angels made sujood
and the shaitan was so arrogant and he
refused.
Now the question is, if Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala
had asked the shaitaan to make sujood to
Allah, do you think the shaitaan would have
made sujood and salah to Allah?
Yes or no?
Of course, yes. But what about this brother,
Allah is asking him every day, 5 times
to go and pray, and he refuses.
Now who is better now, the shaitan or
this guy? Shaitan. Okay. And I'm not trying
to offend anyone. I'm just giving you a
different perspective, so don't shoot.
The reason why some hearts die where they
become sick is because
one illness.
They call it Al Ghafla in Arabic. Headlessness.
Headlessness.
Their hearts are not functioning, they are not
working.
And this reminds me of a story I
just heard today. There's this guy,
let me say it first in Arabic, then
in English and Somali.
So there's this guy,
He said, I'm not gonna wait for the
bus, I will just run to the house.
Allah
So this guy
is sitting at Tim Hortons, he's drinking his
tea and the banana, the mousse.
So somebody called him and said, Abdullahi,
your wife is giving birth to a baby,
you know. She's 9 9 months, you know,
in her pregnancy.
So he left the tea and he left
the bananas and everything, and he started to
run-in the street. He doesn't have a car
and he didn't have time to wait for
the bus, so he started to run.
So after running for 5 minutes, he stopped
and he he said, wait a minute, but
my wife is not in her 9th month,
she is in the 3rd month in the
pregnancy. Something is wrong here. But in any
way,
let me run and see. So he started
to run again, and after 3 minutes of
running, now he's panting, he's losing his breath,
and he said, wait a minute,
my wife is not pregnant.
But again he said, I gotta go home
and check,
everything out. Then he started to run again.
Then he said, Nah, hold up. What's what's
going on here? Am I getting old or
something? I'm not married.
Then he started to run again.
Then after 5 minutes of running his stuff
and he said, Nah, Hawa Al Khair. My
name is not even Abdullahi.
And he went back.
This is what I call Ghafla. People just
live like
a feather in the wind. They're not thinking.
They're not thinking about their lives. Why they
are living in this dunya?
Why they are heading after this life?
So they can't make a hit or tail
of their life. So you have to think.
Okay. So half life, heedlessness is the worst
enemy we have in this life. Sometimes we
get busy with everything,
we work 2, 3 jobs
to put food on the table, and to
buy the biggest homes in the town, and
to buy the fanciest cars, and we forget
about everything. We don't pray on time,
we don't teach our kids anything about Islam,
we don't go to the masa'id, and so
on and so forth. So this is what
I call heedlessness,
rafla.
So Ibrahim ibn Adam was walking in the
streets of Basra one day in the market,
so people stopped him and said, You anya
imam,
when we make dua,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not answer our
dua. When we hear the Quran, we don't
feel anything.
He said the reason is because your hearts
have died because you're doing 10 things.
So number 1, you claim that you love
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and you disobey Him
day and night. If Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
tells you to go to the right, you
go to the left. He tells you to
go up, you go down. So what kind
of love is this?
You claim to love Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
and you disobey Him. So this is number
1.
So number 2, you eat from the provisions
of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala day and night
and you don't thank Him. You never say
to Allah
No thanking whatsoever.
Number 3, you claim to love the Prophet
and
you never follow his sunnah or his guidance.
Number 4, you read the Quran all the
time, you hear the Quran all the time,
and you disobey the Quran.
And number 5, you say that, Shaitan is
our enemy,
and you became the friends with the shaitan.
You, you obey the shaitan all the time.
So shaitan has become like a friend to
you.
Il Amri says,
Number 5 6, you claim that Jannah is
the truth,
and you don't do anything to deserve to
go to Jannah.
Number 7,
you know that the hellfire is the truth.
And once a person goes to the hellfire,
they're staying there forever,
but you're not doing anything in this dunya
to protect yourself from the hellfire.
Number 8, you know for sure that death
is coming one day,
but you never prepare yourself for death.
We all not we are standing in a
line waiting for death.
Somebody today, somebody tomorrow, somebody yesterday,
but we don't know who is going to
die tomorrow.
And I gave this story a long time
ago, this, brother
who was from somewhere in Europe,
he was living in the south side, and
his mother was asking him to go to
the Masjid and pray.
And he used to tell her,
tomorrow, tomorrow.
And she used to say,
You Nisan, please, honey,
go to the masjid for Jum'ah and pray.
And he used to he used to say,
next week.
Eventually, he came to Arashid for salah,
but not to pray,
but for people to pray janazah on him.
This brother had an accident
and he died, and he never prayed in
his life. And after I prayed janazah, one
of my friends came to me and he
said, I knew this I knew this brother,
and this is what his mother used to
tell him and he never prayed. He used
to say, tomorrow, next week, but this tomorrow
and this next week never came.
Number 9, you take people to the grave
everyday,
and you never learned the example or the
lesson that one day,
just like you brought some people to bury
today, so tomorrow maybe they will bring you
for burial.
So you have to put this in your
mind.
If death
left you today to take somebody else,
maybe tomorrow it will leave somebody else to
take you. So always put this in your
head.
Number 10, you are always talking about other
people and their problems, and you have no
time to think about your own problems.
It's a big problem that you always busy
yourself by talking about other people.
So this call I used to say,
by Allah, if I have time to think
about my own problems, I will never have
time to think about anybody's
life or problems.
Now you start thinking about people, oh, this
brother is very tall. This brother has no
job.
This guy, his nose.
It's not your problem.
Busy yourself, look look at yourself in the
mirror, okay?
Take a moment and look at yourself in
the mirror, see all the problems you have
in your life.
There's a hadith from the prophet salallahu alaihi
wa sallam in which he says,
why do some people forget about the block
in their eyes
and they see the speck in somebody else's
eyes? And of course this saying is also
attributed to Isa alaihi salallam but it's it's
a hadith from the prophet salallahu alaihi wa
sallam.
So you have to think about these things
and to understand why the hearts die, and
you have to treat this concept of ghafla
in our hearts.
The last thing I wanna say
is the cure for ghafla.
Number 1 is remembering Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
And by remembering Allah, I don't mean just
saying,
Allahu rrahmanu rrahimu malakul kutu, sussalamu
No. By remembering Allah, we're not talking just
about the attributes and the sifat of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala,
but you have to reflect on the meaning
of this sifat. Yali, for example,
if you know that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is Ar Razzak, the provider,
so you have to practice it too. You
have to keep in your mind
that you're risk in this dunya, and you
keep fighting with people to take the risk.
Everybody is fighting for risk in in this
world, in this dunya,
and they fail to realize the risk is
in the heavens.
Okay?
If you understand that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
is Al Basir,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sees everything,
if you keep this in your mind,
now you're going to do only the things
that
will look handsome and beautiful in the eyes
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. And if you
can't see Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, he definitely
sees you all the time.
If you believe that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
is the forgiving and the stern in punishment,
you have to also understand this meaning.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the
Quran,
Those whose hearts
are relieved by the remembrance of Allah, and
indeed, in the remembrance of Allah, there is
life for hearts.
Okay.
Also, ta'atullahhi wa ta'atul Rasool. You have to
obey Allah
and obey the Prophet
Okay? And this will give life to your
heart.
The hearts die because they failed to remember
Allah.
They die because they fail
to remember the hellfire, and Jannah, and and
the and the and the hissab, and the
judgment.
Our hearts die because we get up to
our ears,
immersed in sins.
Once you do something bad for the first
time, now you you feel bad about it.
You can't sleep at night, you feel very
regretful and remorseful.
But if you do it for 10 times
in a row,
then it becomes like a routine to you.
You don't feel anything.
Okay?
So obedience to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. Now
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala tells us in Surat
Al Amfarb,
Oh you who believe,
respond to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and his
prophet and obey them when they invite you
to what will give you life in this
dunya.
Okay. So the meaning is very clear.
And to achieve all of this, and this
is my last point,
you have to understand why you are here
in this dunya. You are not here in
this dunya to play soccer and play video
games. You are here in this dunya to
make rebalah to Allah
and worship Him and praise Him.
So Allah
has created us in this dunya to worship
Him,
either by ritualistic
acts of worship like salah, and zakah, and
Hajj, or non ritualistic acts of worship like
studying,
being a doctor to make people's lives easy,
and so on and so forth. Okay.
So some people came to Al Khasal Al
Basri,
and they asked him, how can we revive
our hearts and live a decent life in
this dunya? He said, you can do this
by 3 things.
Assalamu Alaikum. Whoever is driving a red Mitsubishi
Montero,
the plate number is tbu059.
You are blocking someone that's ready to leave.
They're in their car waiting. If you don't
mind, please get up and take your car
to
Zack Mulakih. They are waiting in their car,
so please go ahead and remove your car,
Zack Mulakih.
And I'll give you a ticket.
So, Imam al Ghazali al Basri said, to
revive your heart and to live a decent
life in this dunya, a happy life in
this dunya, and to gain salvation and sa'ad
in the next life, you have to do
3 things.
Number 1, I believe that my risk provision,
nobody would take it except me, so I
put my heart at ease.
And number 2, nobody will do my amal,
my rebalah in this dunya, so I got
busy with my business, with my work. So
I'm not talking about anyone else.
And number 3, I know that eventually I
will die, so I got busy preparing for
that journey, so I have no time to
waste in this dunya.
I'm gonna conclude
with this story
to clarify
the whole purpose of this life, and how
to revive your heart by doing what is
necessary
to gain happiness in this dunya and Sa'adah
in the next life.
There was this king,
and he had 3 assistants.
Okay?
So this king told his assistants,
Please, each one of you, take a cart
and go to the superstore,
and fill it with food.
Okay? Nothing but food.
So they went, and the first one filled
the cart with food.
Cans,
bananas,
of course,
and
fruits and vegetables, and everything, all different types
of food, milk, eggs, everything.
The second one, he said, what's wrong with
this guy? What's wrong with this king?
He already has cooks in the palace, they're
going to cook for him, and I don't
think he will eat from the food I
will bring to him. But what I will
do, I'm gonna take half of this stuff,
food, and the second second half different things.
I'm gonna take a pair of shoes,
a sues and tie,
pave,
toothpaste,
and,
different things, and a belt. Okay? Clinics, tissue,
all that stuff.
The 3rd guy, he said,
this king is messed up. He's majnun.
He's not going to take my this food
anyway.
I'm gonna fill it with chews,
with clothes, with clinics, and different things.
Coloring books,
pencils, all these things. Okay. Now they went
back to the king
and the king tells him, he called the
guards and he said,
Put every one of these 3 in a
room and let them out for a whole
month, and let them eat everything they brought.
Oh man.
So the first one, he had no problem
because he filled the whole cart with cans,
and fruits, and vegetables, and different things, so
he survived.
The second one, in the 1st 2 weeks,
he ate
the food he brought, half of the cart,
and in the second half, he started to
eat the shoes,
and the belt,
and the clothes, and eventually, at the end
of the month, he was starving but he
survived.
He survived, he made it.
The third one, La hawa lalapatem. Mushkilawain.
Big problem.
He started to eat the shoes, and the
belts, and the toothpaste, and all this stuff,
and after 1 week he died.
Okay.
So the example of these 3 are like
me, and you, and she, and him. So
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala is telling us that
the only thing will benefit you in the
grave is your Amal,
and this is the food,
zalal taqwa,
khairazal taqwa. The first, the best provision you
can take in the journey to akhirah is
taqwa.
So if you take it, this will keep
you safe in the grave and in the
next life. But the second type of people
are those who are disobedient. They pray sometimes,
but other times they don't pray.
And the third type are those who don't
listen, and they are heedless, and they never
pay attention.
So the first type are those believers, and
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says about them,
the ones who obey and they believe and
they do good deeds, then they will make
it to Jannah, safe and sound.
The second
time,
And the second type are those who mix
their deeds with good ones and bad ones,
then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, hopefully,
I will forgive them and eventually they make
it to Jannah. Just like the second guy.
The 3rd type and the last type, and
I'm gonna conclude with this,
So the third type
are those that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala say
about them, Those who are actions in this
dunya are corrupted, they are messed up,
but they think that they will make it
to Jannah, but Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, they
will never make it there. And finally, we
ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to revive our
hearts, and to give us hidayat, and to
give us sincerity in everything we say and
do in this dunya, and to give us
Jannah and the Shafa'at of the prophet
in the next life.
