I bear witness that there is none worthy
of our worship except Allah
And I bear witness that Muhammad salallahu alayhi
wasallam, peace be upon him, is the seal
of the prophets and the final messenger
to all of humanity. Whoever Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala guides, there is none to misguide, and
whoever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala leads astray, there
is none to guide aright.
So inshallah before I begin the, Khutba, I
would like to remind you of the situation
in Alberta, Fort Mac.
Maybe you have relatives there,
more than 80,000 people have been evacuated because
of the wild,
fire.
A lot of people lost their jobs,
they lost their houses, their cars, and all
their positions.
So we need to keep them in our
dua. Yeah. Then
We keep them in our dua. Then Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will make it easy for
them, and we ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
to protect all of them. We're talking about
Muslims and non Muslims. So we're talking about
our brothers in faith and our brothers and
sisters in humanity, that Allah
will protect them all and make it easy
for them. And in the meantime, we should
also remember our brothers and sisters in Syria,
in Iraq, in Palestine, and always keep them
in our Dua'a.
Today's topic is very important.
So, inshallah, if you normally sleep in the
footba,
I just need your attention for just 20
minutes, so you can wake up for 20
minutes and you can, go to sleep after
futba, after salaam inshaAllah.
So, inyoohim inshaAllahat hakalamamuduramuhim
majiddan,
since we're talking about
the relationship with non Muslims.
So the
topic today is how to improve the Muslim
image. Because, evidently, if you follow the news
in the US and Canada,
we have an image problem.
More than half of the population
in Canada and more than that in the
US,
they they don't see Muslims favorably.
We have a problem. Most of the time,
it is not because of something we have
done as a community,
because they see the news coming from the
Muslim world, from Syria, from Egypt, from Pakistan.
There is nothing
all all the in information or the news
coming from the Muslim world, nothing but trouble,
nothing but killing, nothing but destruction.
And, of course, they hear some statements
coming from the new conservatives,
in the US, Donald Trump,
and you probably are aware of what,
Stephen Harper used to say about the Muslim
community. So they hear all these things, the
politicians, and so on and so forth. So
all our image is is oral.
So we need to do a lot of
work to improve this image,
if we talk about living in this country
and dealing with non Muslims,
because we are here to stay.
Some of us say, well, I'm here for
just a few years to get things straight,
and so on and so forth, and then
eventually I'm gonna go back home.
I meet some people who lived in this
country, they have lived in this country for
75 years, and all they say, well, I'm
I'm going home.
You're kidding me.
Canada is not a hotel.
Canada is home. Your kids were born here,
your grandchildren were born here, you ain't going
nowhere,
as they say in New York. Right? So
you are here to stay.
Right?
So you have to to to live,
and you have to set up your mind
this way, that you are here to stay,
and you need to improve your condition as
a Muslim community. You want to succeed,
get the best education, get the best jobs,
make the best income, because this is your
country.
Where are you gonna go to?
Egypt,
Pakistan,
Syria,
Yemen? It's all mizdah. Right? So we are
here to stay. So with this in mind,
so we need to look around and improve
our condition.
Now, when we deal with non Muslims, we
have to keep this ruling in mind. This
is straight from fakhr.
Al Muharram al Muslim, yahooum alalayel Muslim Island.
So, for example,
if something is haram to do to a
Muslim, it's also haram to do to a
non Muslim. Say, for example,
lying to a Muslim is haram, but lying
to a non Muslim is haram too.
Committing zina with a Muslim is also haram,
but also committing zina with a non Muslim.
So it's it's all haram.
So for example, stealing is haram from a
non Muslim. A few years back,
there was a sister, in Toronto. She was
caught shoplifting from one of the stores.
And later she said, I was doing this
because these are kuffaris, it's okay to steal
from a non Muslim. Well, this is a
lie. Because if you look at the Seerah
of Muhammad when
he left Mecca to Madinah,
and O Lord, the people of Mecca, Musufiyal
and Abujaheda and Abu Lahab, they, well, they
didn't like him, they didn't like what he
was teaching, but if they, if they have
some valuables, some precious stuff, who did they
trust with their valuables?
Muhammad salallahu alaihi wa sallam. So do you
think before Muhammad salallahu alaihi wa sallam left
Mecca, he said, you know, I'm going to
hit their pockets very hard. I'm going to
take all the stuff with me to Madinah.
No. He gave it back. He left it
with Ali radiAllahu alaihi wa'amu to give it
back to them. He didn't steal them because
stealing is ham whether it's from a Muslim
or a non Muslim.
I know
you know, I'm not going to get into
details. The brothers who sell pork and alcohol
in their stores
And when their kids, you know, they say,
dad, we just learned at school that you're
not allowed to sell pork or alcohol. You
know what they say?
No. No. No. You don't understand.
Selling pork and alcohol to Muslims is haram,
but selling * and alcohol to non Muslims
is okay. No problem.
Then 15 20 years later,
their son will come to them, their kids
will come to them, you know that,
I have a girlfriend.
He said, but, you know, girlfriend, boyfriend thing
is haram. He will say, no. No. No.
No. My girlfriend is not Muslim. She's she's
non Muslim. So it's okay. You're good to
go. No. It's all wrong. It's the same
it's the same argument. So you can't play
this game with your kids. It's not gonna
work because it will come back to haunt
you.
So if something is haram with a Muslim,
it's also haram with a non Muslim. The
argument that I usually get from the Muslim
brothers who sell pork and alcohol,
will I sell it to a non Muslim,
so it should be okay?
Well, this goes against what Muhammad said.
He said,
if Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala makes something ham,
then the money coming out of it is
haram too. This is an authentic hadith from
Muhammad
Azazal.
I don't know how many of you are
Somalis.
There is this beautiful saying in Somali,
They say that I don't eat dead meat,
but I just drink the the soup of
dead meat. It's exactly the same thing. So
if something is haram, then what is coming
out is also haram.
Like. Also,
when we look at the relationship between Muslims
and non Muslims, we have to look at
this ayah in Surat al Mu'taymah, where Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
This is Surah 60.
Ayah number 8. Allah subhanahu wa'ala says, Allah
does not forbid you Muslims
from dealing kindly
and fairly with non Muslims
who have not fought against you or kicked
you out of your homes or abused you
because of your faith. So Allah
does not forbid you from dealing kindly and
fairly with them. Allah enlightens those who are
fair. So this is the ayah right there.
So as long as someone is not persecuting
you, they are not abusing you, kicking you
out of your home, then you have to
be fair, and you have to be just
with them. This is what Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala says in the Qur'an.
I know that
Alhamdulillah,
that,
most of us are law abiding, good people,
but there are some among us who give
a bad image about Islam. I'll give just
just a few examples. Right?
When one of us does something wrong,
they don't know your name, they don't know
where you are from, they don't know your
family, all they know is that a Muslim
has done something wrong, and Islam is bad.
This is what they have in their mind.
Right? So we need to work together
to clarify this image, and work together. It
doesn't matter where you are coming from, your
culture, your skin color, it doesn't matter. So
we need to work together and learn learn
from the Chinese,
Ukrainians, Italians, and the Jewish community. This is
this is what they do. They work together,
and they try to improve their image, and
this is why we are successful.
This is a survival technique. Right? So we
need to work together as a Muslim community
to to improve this image.
Some of us say, well,
I'm a Muslim,
and, you know, it's okay. That's all for
me because this is a non Muslim society.
I'm just a Muslim, and the question always
comes up, are you, Canadian first or Muslim
first? This is nonsense.
This is just like asking me, are you
a good father or a good husband?
Muslim is a faith. Canadian is the country.
This is where you live. So there's no
contradiction here. You can be a Canadian, and
you can be a good Muslim too. There's
no contradiction whatsoever.
So, I will talk about a few bad
things that some of us do,
and I always say
that, most of us are law abiding, good
citizens, good Muslims, but only the bad apples,
the bad apples, the very few bad apples
who give us a bad image.
Most of us,
we have better education than the average, in
Canada and in the US, we make more
money than average Canadians and Americans, and we
we live a good life.
So but only the bad apples will give
us a bad image. So the first thing,
they always say there are 2 things that
you cannot escape,
death
and taxes.
But still some of us find a way
to get around paying their taxes. Right?
And,
for example, they falsify the information when they
apply for taxes,
or, for example, they, they don't give the
right amount, or they try to evade taxes
altogether.
Since this is the tax season, March
and April, so it's time for everyone to
to pay their tax. Okay? And this is
the country the country is right on you.
You gotta pay taxes because you get some
services as well.
So some of the brothers, and I've met
some of them, they have businesses or they
give services where they only take cash.
I'm not gonna name businesses, right?
Restaurant, all these things. They only take cash,
so there's nothing documented.
So at the end of the year when
they apply for tax, they fill out their
tax form. Oh, I make up I make
$700 a year.
You can't make $700
a year. Well, if I get a 4
year old kid from the kindergarten in the
school
to sell lemonades outside the Masjid here, they
will make
$2,000 a month. $1,000
a year? This is a joke, man.
No. This is what they do just to
evade taxes. And and eventually they say, Yeah.
No. I I another argument. I can't give
them taxes because they are kafar.
Oh, kafar. So when you came here, you
were desperate,
and you were getting free,
you know, healthcare,
your kids were getting free education,
and then so on and so forth. They
were good people, and you were getting child
child benefits, and all these things. They were
good people, but when they decided to give
back, they're kafar.
So who are you trying to fool?
And some people this is what makes me
sad.
I met some people. I heard stories
that
that they give their wife a divorce on
paper,
just they divorce their wife on paper, and
the guy will go somewhere else. They go
to Alberta to get a job there, a
cab driver, or something,
and their wife will be here, and she
is divorced on paper. She will get welfare,
and you will get welfare from there, and
this is how they go about it. If
someone divorces their wife on paper, and this
is the faqwa from me, this is called
divorce in Islam. You don't play games with
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. This is wrong. This
is haram. Right? So if you know someone
who does something like this, tell him this
is haram, this is not acceptable, your wife
is divorced, you will get yourself into a
lot of complications, in fact, and you don't
want to be in that position.
So taxes.
Number 2,
welfare.
So sometimes because you know, I'm not saying
that taking welfare is wrong. If someone in
a is in a difficult situation, they come
here, they're still learning English,
they don't speak the language, and they can't
find the job. I know how difficult it
is.
There's nothing wrong if you take welfare because
you need it, especially if you have kids,
subsidized
housing, all these things, that is okay
if you need it, and if you can't
live otherwise.
But if you are healthy, and you can
work, and you apply for welfare, or you
falsify your income just to get welfare from
the country, this is not acceptable Islamically.
Because you made a deal when you came
to this country,
to be honest,
Someone will say, well, I didn't sign a
contract with with,
Queen Elizabeth.
No, you did. When you got your visa,
when you got your PR card or citizenship,
you signed some paper, and in that paper,
you don't normally go through the details,
and in those papers you have some rights
and some obligations, you have to be a
good citizen, a pride, honest, sincere, all of
that. So you can't lie to them because
they are they are none Muslim. This is
not acceptable.
And you there are so many examples in
the seal of the Prophet,
and we need to follow the example of
Muhammad SAW.
So getting the welfare,
unjustly is not acceptable in Islam. We have
to when you make an income, you make
it with dignity, and this is why
Allah will put Barak in it. I'll just
sign a sign a couple of examples,
one from prophet Musa alayhi salaam, and one
from Abdul Rahmari now for the law.
So Musa alayhi salaam,
So in the story of Musa alaihi salaam,
when he left Egypt, he killed someone unintentionally,
he punched him, he fell dead, so he
ran away
to to to Midian.
And if Nabbar describes
the way that,
Musa alaihis salaam left Egypt,
they say that he had no clothes on,
no shirt,
he had no shoes, no money, he had
no house, no wife, nothing.
Nothing.
Because he was running for his life. He
was afraid.
They say when he went to Madyan, you
know the story in Surah Qasas, when he
saw the 2 ladies who provided water for
their animals,
and they invited them him over to their
house, And they say in the books of
the Fassir that when their father Shoaib he's
not the Shoaib the Prophet, because Shoaib the
Prophet passed away years before.
So when they invited him for food, he
said
he said, I can't accept
food for the service I did for your
daughters because I did it for Allah. And
they said, No, no, no. We're not paying
you for your service. This is the hospitality
of the Ikram. We offer to the guest.
This is why he ate. So Naba'al salallahu
anhu said, Yes, he left without shoes,
no
shirt, no money, no job, no house, no
wife, nothing. And on the same day, because
he have Taqwah, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, on
the same day, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave
him a wife, He gave him a job,
He gave him a house, he gave him
clothes, he gave him everything.
So we need to learn from this example
that you need to live and earn your
money
in a dignified way, with dignity. And Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala does not forget
anyone. He will not forget you. Let's take
an example of Abu UHman ibn Naww, when
he made hijrah to Madinah with Muhammad salallahu
alayhi wa sallam. He didn't have any money
with him. No food, nothing.
So the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam made
him the brother of Saad ibn
Afan Nabiya salaamdi nahuw
Saad ibn Rabiya.
So in the story of Abdul Rahmari now,
if he left Mecca, he didn't have anything
with him. He made Hijla to Madinah with
the Prophet He didn't take anything with him.
And
the Prophet made him the brother of Saladin.
And Saladinur Rabiyyah said, Okay. I'll give you
half of my money. I have 2 wives.
I'll divorce 1. You will marry her. So
he said, No. No. No. Show me where
the market is. So he went to the
market. He was a businessman,
and he was working hard, and after several
years, they say that when Abdul Rahman ibn
Naw passed away, he left 33,000,000
dinars, golden pieces. He was a millionaire or
billionaire by today's terms.
Why? He was not relying on people, on
on kindness from people. He was working hard.
He put his trust in Allah and
he was working hard. He was doing something
for himself. And this is why Allah
honored him, and Allah
made it easy for him. We asked Allah
to bless us, and make it easy for
us, insanAllah, before
they falsify their immigration documents.
Some, in some cases, they live in a
Muslim country somewhere,
and on paper, they own a house here,
or they rent a house, and they take
receipts, and all these things. You heard stories
because the stories are in the news all
the time.
So they falsify their immigration papers so they
can't take citizenship, although they are living 10
or 15000 miles away. And the government is
somewhat sometimes aware of the situation, and
they,
they arrest some of these people.
Some of us are desperate because of the
terrible situation in some of our countries back
home.
So there are 2 ways to to be
to come here and to get your citizenship.
They either jump in the ocean or the
or the, Mediterranean,
and 100
100 die every
