AI: Summary ©
Harm them by either way of humiliation
or way of,
making them feel less than.
And these are all ways that you could
potentially
damage and harm your sadaqah.
A good speech that you give,
a kind words that you say,
and forgive less
for perhaps some of the ways that people
approach you due to their desperation is better
than
a charity that you give
that fall is followed with harm.
And you learn something there. It's not just
about what you do, but how you do
it. It's not just about what you do,
but how you do it. This is something
that we should keep in mind.
And there were many parables and examples Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala gave as it relates to
those that give sadaqa, but they do it,
breaking all of the conditions
and all of the, etiquettes that they do
not get any reward rather they are sinful
for that action.
Let's start with ayah 267
where Allah says,
oh you who believe.
Oh you who believe. Every time Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala calls us and says,
We are meant to pay extra attention. It
is your lord and your creator calling you.
All you who believe.
Spend of the good
and the halal that you have earned. Spend.
Spend meaning give charity.
From the good that you have earned, from
the halal that you have earned.
Means halal.
Here immediately you learn that Allah does not
accept your sadaqah if you're giving it from
haram earned money.
So if you received income through impermissible means,
if you give sadaqah from it, this will
not result in reward.
Now many people say, well sheikh, I had
a past
and I have
earned money in in an impermissible way.
What am I meant to do with it?
Can I consume it? Can I give it
to my children? Can I benefit from it?
And the answer is no no and no.
You are meant to get rid of it.
Well, how do you get rid of it?
Do you burn it? No. You give it
away to
good causes,
but you will not get a reward in
return
because it wasn't tawheed. Allah will not accept
it from you, yet you are still required
to get rid of it because you're not
allowed to consume it. You've put yourself in
a situation
where you have money
that consuming it is impermissible.
Giving it to your children is impermissible,
and also
giving it in charity has no reward in
it because it is impermissible wealth. It's not
tayib and the prophet said in hadith,
Allah is and good and he only accepts
that which is good. So what does one
do when they earn haram and they want
to not utilize that? They spend it in
good causes,
but they do not expect any reward from
that. Perhaps Allah may reward them for their
good intention
and for their striving to get rid of
it, but not for the charity and the
sadaqa.
Allah says
spend of the good things which you have
legally earned. Spend on what? Spend it on
the poor. Spend it on the needy. Spend
it on your family. Spend it on zakat.
That's the in fact that's being talked about
here. Charity,
and. Right? Almsgiving.
And also spend and give sadaqah
from that which we, Allah says, have produced
from the earth for you.
So
here you're told
spend
from that which you've earned
in a halal way,
also spend the
from that which is produced from the earth
but
that which is produced from the earth is
that not also
money and wealth that you've earned and worked
for? Is that not also your work? Yes,
it is. Especially the imagine a farmer
that prepares the fields, plants the seeds, tells
does everything that needs to be done, invests
in it, irrigates it and then the fruits
and the vegetables
and everything,
has been growing.
And then he's being told by Allah
spend from that or what you earn from
that just like everyone else has to give
sakat and sadaqah.
Yet Allah specified
Spend from that which we have given you.
Spend from that which you have earned in
means
on the those that are in need and
also spend from that which we have produced
from the earth.
Why did Allah specifically
mention that which has been produced from the
earth?
Because you're meant to spend from all types
of wealth,
whether it's,
that which you earn from trade, whether it's
wages,
whether it's, in investments, whatever it is, you
have to get charity from it all. Right?
So why specifically hone in
on that which grows from the earth?
Because that which grows from the earth, there
is an element
that only belongs to Allah in it.
The seed.
You can plant the seed.
You can water it.
You can make sure that the conditions are
right,
But who actually makes it grow?
Who actually makes it grow? Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala. That's why Allah specifically
mentioned this and there's barakah attached
to that which grows from the earth.
Also often
often that which irrigates the farms and the
the fields is rain sent from the the
sky by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. An interesting
did you know that when you are
meant to give zakat from your crops and
the yield of your farm when you're meant
to give zakat from it, you pay more
zakat
if it was,
irrigated by rain. You pay more
and you pay less
if you,
if it's from pumps and things that you
have to put work in because Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala has just and realizes
that
that which,
came to you easier,
you meant to give a little bit more
than that which came to you with a
lot more investment and work.
Then
Allah
says, and do not aim to give in
charity
that which is the worst or bad
from your wealth.
Here you're being told
when you are giving something away, don't give
away that which is the least.
Now
a common thing that often happens is when
we are giving clothes in charity.
There is a white Toyota
apparently blocking,
other other cars,
so it's a BR68.
If anyone has that car, please make sure
that you can
But this is
important. You come to the masjid, but you
need to be more considerate.
Where was I?
Nam,
Do not give in charity. Allah says
Do not aim to give
the worst of your wealth or the bad
of your wealth.
Now
how does that manifest itself? In the past,
it would manifest itself.
Also another car, the the, license plate is
c t 60.
Please also if you can remove that car
as well.
Do not aim for the worst of your
wealth when you are giving in charity. Now
money is money right if you're transferring money
that doesn't really have bad or worse. A
pound is a pound and a tenner is
a tenner.
But when can it manifest itself?
So in the past, if you had if
you were giving sadaqa,
if you were giving, sheeps
or camels or goats, then you don't give
the worst, the skinniest, then you don't give
that one. You give something better. Have you
give you dignify the person asking
you. Right? Or in our times,
often have I'm sure you've been a part
of it.
Collecting clothes
and you have sometimes
a lot of these charities they're asking
for clothes to be sent to places where
they need it,
to keep them warm especially in the winter.
There's a lot of winter freeze campaigns where
they ask you,
blankets and they ask you for jacket and
things like this. So this is sadaqa.
Now how horrible is it if some people
treat this opportunity of sadaqa as a way
to clear the clutter of their house?
Right?
All the clothes that no one wants, you
would never allow your children to wear it.
You would probably throw it away, but you're
like, you know, I might as well add
it into the clothes that are going for.
That that is
That's what Allah subhanahu is talking about here.
You have an opportunity to spend. Allah wants
you to spend but do not give the
people that which is Khabith meaning the bad
of your wealth. And that Allah says
You want to spend and give that, rather
you would never take it. Rather what? If
you were in that position,
you would not accept it.
Except if you close your eyes and tolerate
it. I want you to,
think about it for a second. Sometimes you're
so desperate
that you have no choice but to take
it. Right? It is the it is, the
best case scenario for you if your children
are freezing, if you're hungry, if you're desperate.
But Allah is telling us here, among the
adab and the etiquette of sadaqa, is that
when you are giving sadaqa, that you do
not give.
Do not give the the bad of your
wealth, the bad of that which you own.
Do not give that away that you yourself
would not take except if you have no
choice and you would take it closing your
eyes.
Remember
that these passages are all about
ensuring the dignity of the one asking,
ensuring the honor and dignity of the one
that is desperate, ensuring the honor and dignity
of the one that's asking for the sadaqah.
At that moment,
they need you.
So you need to do everything in your
power to make sure that you're not putting
them lower than they already feel for being
in a situation
where they need other people's help.
So what is the moral and the lesson
here?
And know that Allah
know
that Allah
is rich and free of all need. So
all these aya that are telling you give,
give, give. But not only give, give in
the best way possible. Give the best of
your wealth. These aya that are telling you
that, Allah is saying that's not for me.
Allah does not need it. Allah is. Allah
is free from this.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is hamid
worthy of all praise but rather it is
for yourselves.
It is to ensure that the Muslim ummah
is taking care of itself.
Right?
And brothers,
this aya had a
this ayah had a
is a reason of revelation.
So it is important to understand the situation
of the Sahaba,
during the time of the prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam. Not all of them were wealthy
or rich. Many of them were struggling and
poor especially after the hijrah.
So the hijrah from Mecca to Medina
resulted in many of the companions of the
prophet
being people that were poor and in poverty
because they left their businesses,
they left their wealth, they left their families,
and they left their homes. They became refugees.
Leave Mecca and they came to Medina. When
they came to Medina, many of them had
no jobs, had no lands, had no homes,
had nothing
and a large group of them,
they would live in the masjid.
They were known as or
and
they lived in the masjid.
There's a great companion among them. Who can
tell you who their companion was?
Now the Sahaba,
the Ansar
who are
from Medina, who had lands, who had crops,
it was their responsibility to take care of
the Ansar. To to take care of the
muhajirun.
And what they would do is they would
take
their
they date palms trees from their from their
farms and they would bring them and they
would hang them in the masjid or they
would leave them in the masjid.
And then the sahaba
when when they would get hungry those that
had nothing they would eat from those dates.
So some of them started to bring dates
that were not,
very edible.
They were they they were dates
that have hardened. They were the worst kind
of dates, the worst kind of tamer, they
would bring it.
And they would sometimes mix it in with
the better ones.
And some of them,
the intention wasn't give them the worst, but
it was I might as well add this.
I might as well give this and add
this. Right?
And it was then that Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala revealed this ayah
So
that,
the
the sahaba that were in poverty
were given
something that is worth giving.
Something
not the kind of
dates that you would rather throw away.
That you yourself will not give to your
children.
But rather you give them not necessarily the
best of your wealth but that which is
acceptable.
Not what the best of your wealth but
what? That which is acceptable for you.
So this is,
the servant of Nazul, but it's applicable to
everyone and everything. And it's something that you
have to keep in mind. Literally, the all
the ayah that we've done last week and
also doing today are heavily
involved in,
ensuring
that the the receiver of charity
is dignified,
is honored,
is respected.
Give them something respectable.
Pick them up because they already feel down.
It's not enough that you're giving it to
them. How are you giving to them? What
are you saying when you're giving to them?
What type of, are you giving it? All
of this is important.
Spend of the good and the halal of
that which you have earned.
And also spend from that which we have
produced from the earth, which is also part
of your wealth. But Allah mentioned it because
that which comes from the earth is something
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala produced particularly.
Because no matter how long we,
play around with seeds and whatnot, we cannot
make it grow if Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
does not want it to.
Do not aim for that which is the
worst of your wealth.
You want to spend that but you would
never take it yourself.
Except if you had your eyes closed and
you barely tolerated it. And know and remember
and Allah
is
rich and free from any need.
Worthy of all praise. Then Allah in the
following ayah
reminds
us that
we
have shaitan
constantly whispering to us
to prevent us from good, to prevent us
from shaitanqa.
And among the ways shaitan does that is
by reminding you of poverty
and making you fear poverty. Allah says the
Quran,
the devil.
Threatens you with poverty
and commands you to commit
evil sinful acts.
Allahu and Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala
promises you
forgiveness
and extra.
Forgiveness
and more barak in your wealth. Forgiveness
and bounty.
And indeed Allah
is all sufficient for his creatures needs.
All knowing. Meaning Allah knows what you're doing,
what you're saying, what you're giving. Allah knows
everything. So in this ayah, we're being told
and some of the mufassiri in the scholars
of the said
that the shaitan
will often
will often
push you towards
not giving sadaqa
by
making you think of your responsibilities,
by making you think of obligations
and this is something this is one of
the makagid,
the masayid, the shaytan. The ways the devil
targets us
because
there are subtle ways by which the shaitan
targets us. One of them is
that
if he can get you to sin, that's
what he wants.
That's what he wants. That's a easy win
for him.
If he doesn't get you to sin,
if he can get you to have shortcomings
in your Ibadah,
that's another win for him.
Maybe you prayed your 5
but you Allah, that's enough. No need for
sunnah. Alhamdulillah. He prayed your 5. Go rush
rush out of the masjid. Right? That's another
win for him because he managed to lessen
your reward.
Another win for him is sometimes that there
are 2 acts of worship but one has
more virtue than the other or one is
more important than the other. If he can
deviate it to the other one, he will.
That's why Raqayee
used to say something very powerful.
The devil, the shaitan,
he will busy you
with that which is important. The shaitan will
busy you with that which is what? Important.
To ensure you're not doing that which is
even more important.
To ensure you're not doing that which is
even more important. It's important. This is why,
it's we have to be able to,
figure out some of the windows that the
shaitan can enter from. Some of regarding sadaqa,
because that's what the Isaiah is
about, fear of poverty.
Fear of poverty.
You need this.
You need this. He will not tell you
you need this when you have all these
other unnecessary
subscriptions that you pay monthly to, then you
don't need the money. Then he will not
remind
you. Right? When you're buying unnecessary stuff, you
don't have that voice in you, don't buy
this. Don't you need the money. You don't
have that. But the moment
it is someone stands up, and we need
to give charity,
this responsibility and that responsibility
and this issue and what you're gonna do,
that's from the shaitan.
That is from the shaitan.
Right? So it is upon us to remember
Allah's promise.
Allah promises you forgiveness from him, which is
what you want.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala promises you
a means
more, bounty, blessings. The prophet
Charity never decreases
any wealth.
Right?
Meaning Allah will put barakah in whatever
is left for you. So keep this in
mind, my brothers and sisters. Not to mention,
what we also need to get rid of
is the glorification
of wealth.
The glory the constant glorification of wealth for
its own sake.
Because
the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
used to
not
ask Allah,
oh Allah make the provisions of me and
my family kafaf. Meaning that's which that which
is enough.
That which is enough and not a lot
of extra. That which is enough. And if
there was anything extra, the prophet give it
away.
The prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam would give
it away. And he is our example in
our uswa. What you're learning here is and
some of the salafs, you should discuss this,
and they used to say that
what is the ruling
and this was asked, I believe, it was
Abdullah ibn Barak. He was asked,
what is the ruling
of the one
who
wanting to be
spending upon those that are in need of
him, family, relatives and whatnot,
goes to every,
possible way of earning
until he falls into haram.
And he
said, it is better for this person to
earn less
much much less
and give that which is enough for his
family that fund haram. That will make sense.
Of course, you don't wanna earn haram and
spend it on it. Allah just told us
that he will not accept it. But then
he said what about the one that does
it
in halal means?
He's earning a lot of halal, a lot
of money. What about that one? And he's
spending it.
He said this is higher.
This is higher.
But he did add a thing. He said,
but that person
does have to remember
that you will be questioned more.
So this is something that you have to
always ask yourself.
Do I want to be wealthy beyond measure
and spend
a lot of higher in it?
But that with that comes a responsibility.
That a you will overcome
the whispers of the shaytan
that you will able. So look in the
mirror ask yourself. I want this wealth and
I want that wealth and I want to
earn this and I want to have this
many businesses but okay that's fine. Why?
Or I want to help the ummah, I
want to give a lot of sadaqa. That's
great.
Are you
do you understand
what else comes with that package?
More responsibility
because you'll pay more zakats.
More responsibility
because you are now a source of for
the ummah. So what will you do with
that? More question from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
That you will be asked, you will be
asked, you'll be asked
for the blessings Allah
has given you. So you take out of
that package. So while understanding
the responsibility
of wealth,
understanding the attacks of shaitan that will force
you to keep your wealth,
and
the doors of shaitan that open up for
you, the more wealthy you are. Certain type
of sins will open up to you that
you were not doing before because you can
literally afford them. If you're willing to overcome
all of that and then give,
then you're upon Allah.
But how many people can actually say that
which is why when it comes to this
constant messaging that we hear get wealthy, get
wealthy, get wealthy,
it needs to take into consideration all those
variables.
May Allah protect us from shaitan.
Right? And remember
this following point. The shaitan, Allah says
Allah says, he will threaten you with poverty.
When? When you wanna give.
And he will command you to do evil
and sinful acts.
Promises you
forgiveness.
That
those that give sadaqah
that it
extinguishes your sins
like water extinguishes fire.
So those among us that are burdened with
sin,
give lots of charity.
Those among us that are acting falling into
haram
remedy that with sadaqah
because it extinguishes it. May Allah
extinguish all of our sins.
Now now that you have
2 messages
entering,
One is the promise of Allah for forgiveness.
The promise of Allah of reward. The promise
of Allah of your wealth becoming more barakah
if you give and you spend on those
dire need. And then the threats of shaitan,
the whispers of shaitan, don't give, you need
the money. When you have this, if you
will struggle inside of you,
what do you need to ensure that the
right decisions are made? You need wisdom.
You need hikmah. And what does Allah say?
Yutulikmataman
yasha
Allah gives hikmah and wisdom to him. Every
he wills. Woman yutulikmah
And whoever wisdom and hikma was given to
and granted to
that person abundant good has been given to
him.
But none remember and receives this reminder
except people of understanding. Except people of understanding.
Here Allah
is telling us about hikma. Now hikma
literally means wisdom. Hikma means wisdom. And hikma
in the Arabic language
is to put something exactly where it belongs.
Meaning in other words, to be wise means
to do the right thing
at the right time in the right circumstances
and the right way. To say the right
thing in the right way to the right
person. So always,
make make that as wisdom. If Allah blesses
you with that,
In other
words, wisdom is that you overcome the whispers
of Shaitan
that he's whispering you don't give charity, you
need this, right? And,
overcoming that with hikmah
overcoming that with hikmah and that's why because
Allah
asked the question,
this ayah
generally speaking does not seem to fit
with the
with all the ayahs that came before. Every
ayah that came before in the last few,
what about charity, how to give charity, what
breaks to charity, what not to do, write
parables around charity,
then then Allah mentions
wisdom. Then it continues on about, sadaqa and
more ayaats of sadaqa. And it's gonna continue
until next week insha Allahu Ta'ala. And then
we get into riba.
The ayah of Riba.
Taib.
So my brothers and sisters,
the the point here is
ask Allah for hikmah as well.
Ask Allah for hikmah and wisdom as well
because that will aid you in in,
in giving some of the scholars of the
sahaba they said
means other things as well, or it means
something else completely.
He wants.
Means the knowledge of the Quran. Right? And
then he meant in specifics,
knowing
the reasons of revelation, knowing the abrogated verses
from the ones that weren't abrogated,
knowing the meanings. So he said
Quran is the.
Some of them said it is the sunnah.
Some of them gave other,
translations for hikmahir
but,
the scholar said
this is not
contradictory statements,
but complementary statements. It means conventional wisdom.
It also means Quran. It also means sunnah.
It also means knowledge. Whoever Allah gives that
to because often we gain a lot of
wisdom from the Quran.
We gain a lot of wisdom from the
Quran. So Allah
gives to him whoever he wills. In other
words,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, this is something that
people need to also appreciate.
When we say Allah is the provider,
Allah is the provider.
What does Allah provide? What comes to mind
here? Allah provides
risk. Right? Provisions food and water and jobs
and income and money, but Allah also provides
akhlaq.
Right? Allah provides
Allah provides wisdom. Some will have more than
others. Some will have more akhlaq than others.
Some will have more knowledge than others. So
Allah is giving all of this, and Allah
is telling us here,
Allah gives wisdom and whomever he wants.
Whoever receives that wisdom, may we all be
blessed with it.
He has been given what?
A lot of abundant
and none remember and receive and accept this
reminder,
illa'ool albab accept people of understanding.
Inshallah ta'ala, we'll conclude here tonight. We've
to summarize,
we learned about
what do you do
with halal money, and can you get rewards
from it?
And what did you answer with that one?
Adam,
what do we do with haram income if
we have haram money? Can we give can
we can we consume it?
No. So what do you do with it?
Will I get any rewards for that?
I don't get any rewards for that. Unless
we count what
the good intention behind getting rid of the
haram but not the actual it will not
become.
Why
did Allah specifically mention the produce from the
earth?
Nam
because,
although it comes under the general
wealth that Allah has given us, Allah specifically
mentioned it because,
crops and that which grows from the earth
it
it it will not grow if it isn't
for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. Right? And there
is a lot more Ibra attached to that
than to wages where you went and you
did a job and you came back, which
is why Allah is telling us look at
these seeds that you cannot consume.
Rain will fall on them and they will
grow, a reminder of a lost presence and
a lost power.
The main moral of the lesson of the
ayah was
That you do not give the worst of
your wealth that you yourself will never take.
So
apply that the next time there's a clothing's
run. Do you have a question?
You have clothes that are not in good
condition.
Now this is
for this nuance. So
there is
sometimes
you have
someone knock your door or a leaflet is
given to you or you see a campaign
of a clothes run for a particular area
and then you go into your home and
you purposely
collect
all the stuff you wouldn't wear,
then the eye fits you. Because you went
and picked what? The clothes that you would
not wear, Right? The.
Right? That which you don't want you don't
want your children to go out with.
This the.
However,
if
there are clothes
that
you
no one in your home can wear them
or
they will be useful to those people,
then you can't give it away.
But
I would always
remember this Aya
and I will try my best even if
I'm doing that because it makes sense that
if there are jackets that are older,
you have 2 options. You either or you
give it to sadaqa. Then you rather give
it sadaqa, of course, because it will be
useful to them. But I would still keep
this eye in mind and see if I
can add to it if I can add
to it
some clothes that I do want,
that I would wear, that I would allow
my children
also would wear,
then I would inshallah
do that. But it's the aya
applies to the one who gets an opportunity
of sadaqah
and on purpose goes after the things that
he wouldn't wanna wear or use anyway. I
hope that makes sense. So there is a
distinction there. There's definitely a distinction there about
Khalafik.
There was a
yes.
Forgive us. So there was a question that
was asked last week. It's been a week
and I don't remember what the question was.
So the sisters wrote here, can you answer
the question,
from last week because it was late. Sisters,
if you can write it somewhere
and send it to us, inshallah, we will
answer it, inshallah.
But I don't remember what it was. I
know it had something to do with
I'm trying to remember what the question was.
May Allah forgive us. We'll wait for them.
I'm sure they will send,
One gave cattle and the other gave.
Yes. Yes. They were
but it was it was,
when Allah speaks about the 2 sons of
Adam,
Allah mentions
They both made an offering. It was accepted
from 1, and it was not from the
other.
And
the the x the,
the reason why it wasn't ex accepted, like
Like you mentioned, the ulama mentioned that he
brought
the worst thing that could be given.
And also sometimes the intention matters as well.
Right? The intention matters as well because what
does Allah say at the end of the
ayah?
Allah only accepts from those who are pious.
This is turning into a q and a
session.
Hi, Rasha'Allah. We usually keep them limited but
Adam you already asked a question.
Did someone else did you ask a question
Sheikh?
You raised your hands. Did you? Okay. Maybe
I'm seeing things.
Doctor. Zayed.
Of giving.
Yeah.
Yes.
Yes. Absolutely.
This is very, this is this this is
the
this is the challenge that we have and
the,
when Allah's telling us straight on, it threatens
you with poverty. That's factual.
It's a lot easier to perhaps sense that
if you're aware
when you're in the masjid and
or you see someone that's in need or
you get a call and you can afford
it,
but
all of a sudden, all these other obligations
are coming to you. I think that scenario
is easier to kind
of sense,
you know, and that I can give and
I should ignore,
this this is the devil's deception.
But what you're asking is when is it
the devil's deception
and when is it my internal logic
and looking at the situation,
from a logical perspective? I think that is
a challenge that we all have. And look,
the,
earlier, I gave the principle of mentioned is
that the devil will sometimes busy you with
that which is important to ensure you don't
do that which is more important.
Sometimes
you can overcome this
by
genuinely assessing yourself
and asking yourself and having a muhasabah session
if you will and asking yourself, am I
doing this out of fear of wealth
or am I am I doing
why is it I'm taking this action
or lack of action? Someone decides I am
going to ensure
that I have a good income and this
is the best way. Okay.
Are you
are you doing this
because
you fear poverty?
You fear poverty because no Muslim should ever
fear poverty in the way that the shada
wants us to fear,
But
if it's a probability,
if it's shura, if it's likelihood, if that's
what you're using,
then you make istikhara and you go for
it and there's nothing wrong with that. Again
you are allowed to make sound logical decisions
but if
but the the problem is you can probably
justify
most things.
Most attempts of not doing the quote unquote
right thing, you can justify it in your
head. From a fiver in sadaqah, no no
no. I rather get buy milk at home
because my family needs me more. You know,
there's a lot of ways we justify,
and I think it falls down, subhanAllah.
For your question because it actually adds to
the eye where Allah says,
The connection between having wisdom
and fighting against the shaitan.
Wisdom to know when it is the shaitan.
Wisdom to know when it's a valid decision.
Wisdom to know that,
when
I'm waiting for sisters to by the way,
sisters, I'm waiting for your question, if that's
possible. If not, we'll have to do it
next week, and I'll I'll you'll have to
just write it up inshallah because the other
hand is coming.
They threw it?
