We're continuing the tafsir of Surah Al Baqarah.
Alhamdulillah we're almost complete
Not much left. May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
allow us to benefit from all of the
ayaats that we have read and studied.
We're starting today from IAA number 261.
IAA number 261
where Allah says
Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala in the following ayat
at least the next 10 maybe even more,
generally
will have something to do about charity and
sadaqa and money related matters.
Now we always hear about giving
and the importance of charity. But the
ayat that we're covering tonight will talk more
about
the mentality behind giving sadaqah
and in what state should you be in
when giving charity
and how you can easily
give sadaqa
but then get no reward for it.
How it is possible for you to give
sadaqa
but get no reward for it. If you
do some of the things that Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala talks about in these ayat.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says
So the first eye
here is about those that give charity
for the sake of Allah in the way
of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. So they're giving
it for the right reasons.
The kind of reward they will be given.
And you'll find also Allah has given us
many parables
in these
Those who are giving charity,
those who are giving charity
in the way of Allah. They're spending in
the way of Allah.
They are like
Their their likeness
is
like a grain,
a grain of corn
that
grew
as a plant
7 ears.
Right? So you planted the seed and it
grew how many? 7. And each of them,
when it's opened up,
there is a 100.
There's a 100 grains.
So once the seed was planted,
it grew 7 years and in each of
these years, there are 100. How much is
that?
7? 100. So from one seed,
you gained 700. And similarly,
what you're being taught here is that Allah
will multiply your sadaqah
at the very least 700 times.
At the very least 700 times. Some of
the dua'lema actually say that when Allah revealed
this ayah that the prophet made a dua.
And the prophet said,
Oh my lord, increase for my ummah.
Oh my lord, increase for ummah. 700, the
prophet want us to even get more reward.
And this one, the ayat the ayat that
we already covered was revealed.
Who will give Allah a good loan, meaning
a a a sadaqa for the ummah for
a for any good cause.
And Allah will multiply
it manyfold.
Manyfold meaning even more than what this ayah
is telling us.
Then the
prophet said
Right? May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us
to be among those. But there is a
lesson that you're being taught here. Don't look
at how little it is that you are
given.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will grow it for
you. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will give you
a reward that you cannot imagine.
And when all the sins that we burden
ourselves with on a daily basis or in
all the mistakes that we do and all
the shortcomings that we have, you can go
a long way
by being someone that is charitable. And you'll
find after Allah repeated in the Quran how
important it is to give charity. And through
charity you can gain Jannah.
And there are many examples of that, even
in the
sunnah of Sahaba
that earned paradise through charity. They earned paradise
through charity. One of them was Athamban Afan
radiAllahu anhu. Athamban Afan, the 3rd khalifa,
the son-in-law of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam,
during the Battle of Tabuk or as they
were preparing for the Tabuk Expedition,
he the prophet
asked everyone to spend as much as they
could, and he brought so much wealth. He
brought so much wealth to the point that
the
prophet made so much du'a for Uthman and
said
after today, no matter what Uthman does, it
will harm him. So he earned Jannah through
the wealth that he was giving. So never
underestimate charity. And it's not about just giving
a lot even a little. Allah will increase
it
for
you. Those that are giving sadaqa and spending
in the way of Allah, they are like
a grain of corn,
but it grows
7 ears,
and each one there is
another 100 grains.
And Allah
will even increase more to whom he wills.
And indeed Allah is all sufficient for his
creatures and for his creation.
He is the all knower.
So here you learn the importance and the
value and the virtue of sadaqa.
Another thing, sadaqa is not only voluntary charity.
Sadaqa is not only what?
Voluntary charity. Sometimes their card is called sadaqa
as well. Right? When Allah swam says
Right?
And similarly in the in the hadith of
Mu'adh in Jabal
where the prophet sent Mu'adh
and he says tell them that there is
a sadaqa upon them and he was talking
about zakat.
So
does zakat also get multiplied? Yes. Zakat also
does multiply just like sadaqa. Not only that,
there is type of sadaqa and spending that
is wajay upon you, it's not zakat.
What is an example of an obligatory
spending
that is not zakat? Spending on who? On
your
family, your children and your wife. This is
a sadaqa
but it's also an obligation. Similarly spending on
your parents.
A lot of people don't know this.
The people that it's an obligation for you
to spend on are your children,
your wife and your parents.
When
they are not able to take care of
themselves.
So if your parents are poor or they
are struggling financially,
then
spending upon them is not optional. It is
what? An obligation. However, if they have enough,
then spending on them is not an obligation
but rather what?
A sun act.
Right? So,
in fact, can be obligatory and it can
be recommended. In any case, Allah multiplises you
at the very least in this ayah we
learn how many times?
700
times.
Then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
this was the those that gave him charity.
How?
In the way of Allah. Right? So they
had the right intention.
Now you know something else to try to
do. Is it enough that it's in the
way of Allah? No it's not enough that
it's in the way of Allah. There's something
else that is required as well. And what
is that?
Those who spend their wealth
in the way of Allah, in all the
good causes,
obligatory
or otherwise. They're spending their wealth
but and then they do not follow-up
their gifts
and their spending and their sadaqa.
They do not follow-up
with,
mannan wala adha, a reminder
of their generosity
to those that they gave it to.
They don't follow it up with giving themselves
a pat in the back. With the reminding
of people that you gave, you know what?
Didn't I give you such and such? I
always take care of you. Don't I always
spend on you? This man,
it destroys your sadaqah. That's not what we
do. We give and we forget.
We give and we forget.
Means to remind the person and to feel
that they should be grateful to you and
that you remind them in a way that
hurts them. Because we've all been in difficult
positions
where you're
the person asking. The last thing you want
is to feel indebted to someone when you
literally already are or you feel that way.
So you cannot
be doing men. Right? Someone I did this.
I gave you this. Right? I took care
of you when you had no one else.
Who else do you have but me? This
kind of mentality,
it destroys your reward.
Well, I, Evan, know that they followed up
with other harm.
Harm like what? Harm like exposing.
Saying that guy, I used to take care
of him. I used to do this for
him. Telling other people how desperate they are.
Right? Or the way they asked you sometimes,
and this will we will cover this, sometimes
the way they're asking you is not the
best way. 247 they're calling you. They're desperate.
Right? And you're you're not, taking the call
or he's asking you again and again or
she's asking you again and again. But no
matter what,
you are not allowed
to add insult to injury. You're not allowed
to make them feel less than. You're not
allowed to give them and then make them
feel that they owe you none of that.
Because think about it, whatever you have will
give it to you.
Allah gave it to you. Allah gave it.
It's Allah's, not yours. So at the very
least what you can do is follow that
etiquette that we do not follow-up
the sadaqa by making people feel less than.
If you do that
If you do what? If you give it
for the sake of Allah
and if you when you give it, ensure
that you're not doing any reminders of your
supposed generosity
and you're not doing any way that you're
harming them or insulting them or making them
feel any in a way that is,
unbefitting,
Then if you do that, Allah promised you
the following.
If you avoid all of that, Allah says
they will have their reward with the lord.
Remember that reward that we talked about earlier?
The 700 times that you want. So desperately
and we all do to ensure you do
that. What do you have to do? Give
your sadaqah in a way that is befitting
of a follower of Rasool Allah sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam.
And when Allah gives you that ajarr, Allah
says
they will have no fear
nor shall they grieve and feel sorrow and
sadness. They will have no fear for what's
coming up in the future because they will
go to Jannah.
And they will have no worry of what
happened in the past because they will be
forgiven. You want to be among those? Make
sure that you give lots of sadaqa and
also make sure that when you give sadaqa,
you give it in a way that is
right.
Then Allah
says,
Kind words
and forgiving of faults
is better than
followed by insult and injury and harm.
Let me repeat that.
Kind words
and forgiving of faults is better than giving
sadaqa but then you make the person feel,
the way that we just described.
So you rather not even give it. If
you're going to be doing that, you'd rather
not even give it. And why it's a
mentality shift that we need then brothers and
sisters because often
if you look at the Salaf and the
Sahaba,
it's been raised from Abu Abbas
that he said,
there are people that I can pay back.
There are people that I no matter what
they do something for me, I feel I
can compensate.
For example, he said,
someone
he,
he he gives me salaam, I give him
salaam back.
Someone he gets up for me or gives
me space, I'll give him He said I
could there are certain he mentioned lots of
things, but it's a one person I can
never pay back.
Is it the one
that
is going through a tough time?
And the whole night he's thinking, I need
help.
And I have everyone he can think of,
he thinks of me and comes to me
with this problem.
I cannot thank that person enough.
Right? The one who has honored me
by bringing his problem to me for me
to solve it for him.
That is an honor. It's not something look
at the way the Sahaba are thinking.
I want you to think someone is up
all night. Maybe he's in debt, maybe he
lost money, maybe he's in trouble, whatever it
is. And he's thinking, who do I call?
Who do I call? Who do I call?
Who can help me? And then he says,
you know what? Let me call such and
such. And it's you. And your phone rings.
Abuayun Abbas telling us, that makes him happier
than anything else in the world.
And he saw that as a gift.
Another one of the said,
every day I wake up
and I open my door and I go
out and I don't see someone that is
desperate for my help, someone that has a
Hajj, someone that needs my aid that I
can do something for. If I don't find
that, I would count that day as a
calamity.
I will count that day as a calamity.
They want opportunities to give. They see it
as an honor
to be able to spend, to be able
to help
because as we know from prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam,
the most beloved act of Allah is what
is to put happiness
into someone's heart. And one of the ways
to get Jannah
is to aid believers.
Whoever
to relieve someone's difficulty.
This is who we are as muslims. So
the idea
someone that thinks like that will never be
able to be boastful of the charity they
give because they're humbled.
They're humbled with by the opportunity to be
able to give someone and help someone. And
this manifests itself in other ways as well.
Sometimes you give sadaqa to a cause
but then you're 247 talking about it. You
know, we give this much money and that
much money and what did they do with
it and this and that or the other.
And then it gets even worse.
It gets even worse. Don't give. Brothers don't
give those people, I know them. So now
you become a barrier to other people.
Even if you you have to fear Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala. Remember
that when it comes to sadaqah,
every sadaqa you give is an opportunity
and it can go. Just like your wudu
can break, your sadaqa can break.
Just like your wudu can break. Just like
your salah can break, your sadaqa can break
as well and Allah mentioned this. So anyway,
Allah is telling
us, Kind words.
Someone comes to you and you have nothing,
say to them kind words. Right? Don't be
even even and Allah says wamaghfira and forgiving
of their faults.
Why would Allah mention forgiving of their faults?
Because the desperate person, the person that needs
help,
sometimes they will call you 1, 2, 3,
4, 5 times.
Sometimes they will inconvenience you. Sometimes you get
bothered by how much they're asking you. Allah
is saying, magfirah.
Forgive their faults.
That's better.
Instead of saying, yeah, what's wrong with you?
You're calling them all the time. Did they
not give you last month? Subhanallah. Get a
job like everyone else. You know this? Don't
do this. Especially when you know the person
is desperate. Allah can put you switch your
situations just like that. Would you like to
be spoken like that?
There is a big emphasis in our religion
when it comes to protecting the heart of
the people
and the way they feel protecting them. There's
such an emphasis, subhanAllah,
on the emotional well-being
of people.
People that have that come to you for
help,
You should make them feel
that
they when they because as they were walking
up to you, do you think they want
to be doing that?
Well, why they don't want to be doing
that?
They already feel embarrassed and their heads
are hanging low because no one likes to
ask. And after all of this, you make
you
try your best
to help them lift their heads up high.
From kind words.
Forgiving of their faults.
Is better than charity.
Harm follows it. Because imagine you gave him
some sadaqa, and then as you're walking away,
you tell other people. Other people know. Yeah.
Yeah. He called that person calls me for
sadaqa. Oh, he called you. He called me
as well. And then all of a sudden,
do you think the person wants that? Don't
do that. Protect it because at the end
of the day you want reward and you
don't want Allah to cancel out your reward.
And then Allah says,
and Allah is rich and free of all
needs.
And he is the most forbearing.
Then Allah warns us in the following way.
All you who believe. Do not render your
sadaka vain.
Do not destroy your sadaka.
How, oh Allah, will we destroy
us, by reminding us of your generosity
and by harm.
And then Allah gave an example. Because when
you do that,
you are similar
to
like the one who spends his wealth
but just to be seen by others.
So Allah is equating the one who gives,
but when he gives he harms the person.
When he gives, he gives it but he
reminds them both about his generosity
and the fact that he gave.
He is like the one that gives but
he gives not even for the sake of
Allah just to be called generous.
Just to be show off.
And Allah says
and the one who doesn't believe in Allah
and the hereafter or he doesn't believe in
Allah and the hereafter. And the scholars they
said, what does Allah mean when he says
they don't believe in Allah and in the
last day? There's 2 interpretations.
One of them is they don't believe in
Allah in the last day meaning they're not
even Muslims. They're not even Muslims. It was
all hypocritical. They were monofics. They were not
true believers to begin with. Or
as it relates to their charity, they're not
doing it for Allah and they're not doing
it to benefit in the hereafter.
And then Allah gave an example. What is
the similitude, the parable, the example of the
person that is doing this?
His likeness is
like a smooth rock.
Imagine a smooth rock.
Allah swan Allah will be giving us a
lot of examples related to rain. Earlier, there
was an example related to a seed, right,
that grew and sprouted 7 years and in
each year there was a 100,
seeds and grains. Right?
This example keeps coming back.
And what's growing your what's growing the seed
is the rain. Right?
Now
to for that to grow, it needs to
plant it in fertile
and in strategic area. Correct?
Now Allah is saying the one who gives
sadaqa,
but when he gives sadaqa, he is doing
man and adha, he is doing he's boasting
about it, He has all the wrong things,
as relates to or he's doing it to
show off that this person is similar,
like now imagine the land or the place
is a smooth rock,
all day rain falls on it, will ever
sprout anything.
And on top of it is some,
little dust, some dirt.
Right?
Heavy rains falls on it
until nothing of that dust
remains.
It's bare again. Smooth rock, nothing is there.
This is the example
of the person that gives sadaqa
showing off or gives sadaqa
by harming the person through reminding and boasting
and attacking or making them feel less than
or any of the number of things that
we mentioned.
In other words, just like that rain will
not benefit, just like that water that falls
on it will not sprout anything,
just like that you will get not one
single reward.
And I want you to think about someone
that gave that money away. In other words,
it didn't help him
and then he burnt it.
They are not able to do anything with
what they have earned.
It will not have them it will not
be turning into reward.
It will not be turning into anything. It
will not be happening to go to jannah.
It will not get them closer to Allah.
It will not be written in their deeds.
Nothing.
That £1,000, £100, that £10, nothing.
It's gone.
You spent it but you get 0 return.
Why? Because of you broke your own
and Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.
As for the people that give for
the right reason. What's the right reason?
Seeking Allah's pleasure.
And they have certainty
within themselves.
The scholars, they discuss what does Allah mean
by Okay. We get it. When we get
sundaka, we want Allah's pleasure. That one we
understand.
What tathbids
means
that they
are certain
that
the person they're giving is in need and
it is the right person, so they they
did the due diligence
as it relates to the person they're giving
to. That's one interpretation.
Another is know they are certain of their
intentions
that is for the sake of Allah, and
they are not feeling any
evil intent as it relates to their salah
whatsoever. They're not doing it to show off,
to be boasted, to be to call up
on a favor later. None of that. It's
pure intention. And Ibra Abbas
said,
They are truly expecting Allah's reward, and it's
a true act of worship. It's a true
act of worship.
If they do this so
certain in their hearts is for the sake
of Allah,
hoping Allah's pleasure or seek Allah's pleasure. These
are the 2 reasons that I gave sadaqa.
They are
is the likeness of a garden that is
in a very high place.
Why high? Because the higher it is the
better it is. Right? Closer to the sun,
clear area.
Because again, we want rain to fall on
it and we want it to grow because
that
simple
that,
exemplifies the reward. Right?
And it produced
its yield and harvest
double what it normally does.
What doubled it? The money didn't double, so
what doubled it? The good intentions.
The good intentions. From here you do something
else.
2 people
can give the same amount of sadaqa,
but Allah will reward them differently.
And one could argue, but if this person
gave £50
and that person gave £50, should they not
tell you that you'll get the same amount
of reward? No. Because the act of worship
happens in here first.
And how much you hope in Allah and
how much humility you have and how much
that you are away from riya and all
of these things they matter and Allah sees
that.
Heavy rain fell on it.
And it gave its yield
double what it normally does.
If even heavy rain does not fall on
it,
even light rain is enough.
Even light rain will still make it produce.
Meaning
that once your intentions are pure,
regardless of how much or how little it
is, it will still produce good.
It will still be expected.
You will still get reward.
And indeed Allah
What you are doing
He is all seeing. He is all seeing.
Allah sees what you are doing.
Allah sees what you are doing. Allah sees
how you speak and what you say. Allah
sees how you behave when it comes to
sadaqa and your charity.
AlhanAllah.
All of these ayats talking about not just
the importance of giving charity
but how we give charity. Because it's not
about the end result.
The method of delivery actually matters. And this
is something also we have to think about
a lot. It's
not just Alhamdulillah. I mean he wanted a
loaf of bread, I gave him a loaf
of bread. What does it matter otherwise? No.
It does matter. It does matter. Because we
are a people and our religion has a
heavy focus on making sure the people are
well taken care of not just from a
wealth perspective
but their emotional and psychological well-being as well.
We don't step on people. We don't make
them feel that they are lower. Never.
That's not the ummah for Muhammad sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam.
Then Allah gave another example.
Allah says,
would any of you wish? So Allah is
giving us a scenario and you have to
imagine that scenario. Imagine this was you.
And that one of you has a garden
or a
farm.
And grows date palms and vines.
Date palms produce
dates and the vines produce. Right?
And water and rivers
flowing underneath.
So this is a very good scenario. Umasha
Allah. Right? This person, it's growing, it's beautiful,
there's a garden, there's fruits. And Allah says,
and he has all kinds of fruits growing
in this garden.
Date palm trees, vines
and all kind of fruits.
This is the scenario. Right? So this is
describing someone. So Allah gave him good wealth.
Allah gave him something to be proud of.
Allah gave him,
this beautiful garden with everything in it. Right?
And then Allah said
and then he's stricken with old age.
This person that owns all of this
is suffering from what?
Kibr, old age.
And he has very small and weak children
that rely on him.
So what's the scenario here?
He has a beautiful garden with all types
of fruits growing.
He has dependents,
children that rely on him and he's what?
Very what? Old.
This is the scenario. So someone,
their time is limited because they're growing older
but he has all of this higher
and all of this wealth and he has
people that depend on him.
And while while this is happening,
what's the worst case scenario for him?
A whirlwind
or tornado
with fire in it
came upon his garden, his fruits, his trees
and everything,
and it burnt it all.
Now what would be the case of that
person?
He's too old to do anything else
and his children are too young to fend
for themselves.
So that is an ugly scenario.
Right? That person, all of a sudden, everything
is gone. All of his wealth is gone.
All of life's life's work is gone.
It would have been fine if he's a
young man. He's not a young man. He's
what? An old man.
If he was by himself, it would have
been something, no, he has very young what?
Dependents and
children.
Worst case scenario.
This is the example of the one
who gives sadaqa
and has a riyah.
This is the example of the one who
gives sadaqa
and does men and other.
This is the example of the one who
destroys
his good deeds through their own actions.
It's just like that man. Meaning,
at your most desperate,
a world will come and burn everything. Question.
When are we the most desperate? Yomul Qiyama.
Yomul Qiyama,
when every salah counts,
every tasbih counts,
every pound of sadap counts,
gone.
Because of your
diseased heart
and because you preferred to be called generous
but you preferred to make people,
feel a certain way
that everything is gone.
It's not guaranteed. May Allah protect our amal.
May Allah protect our amal. A lot of
people they think, khalas, I did it, it's
guaranteed. That's not the case.
May Allah
forgive our sins and our shortcomings.
And thus does Allah make clear his ayat,
so that you may ponder and think.
Many examples are given
for us to ponder and think about.
First one was as relates to
nifaq and spending. That we realize
that the more we spend
in the way of Allah, the more it
guarantees us a reward.
Not just any reward but Allah mentioned that
it's 700 times. The next time you see
someone coming to you with a bucket in
the masjid,
the next time you see a friend asking
you for money. The next time someone calls
you from back home. The next time you
get an opportunity. The next time you get
a phone call. Think about kadasa harawa in
that regard.
Right? And give and do Ihdisab.
Expect Allah to reward you. Hope that Allah
rewards you. Right?
And be among the those that give. But
if you're gonna be among those, make sure
that you do not destroy your own sadaqah
through the actions Allah prescribed or described here
in this ayat.
And remember that you want your sudaka to
be like that fertile land that the rain
grows, drops on and then it grows. This
is actually a generation where Allah subhanahu wa'ala
says, when my servant gives sudaka, I grow
it for him. So even the little that
you gave, the £10, is not gone with
the right intention. Allah will increase it for
you and grow it for you.
May Allah
make us among those.
SubhanAllah.
There is another tafsir for the ayah that
we just read about the example of the
old man, the similar tafsir. In fact, in
Buhari,
sir al Buhari is a hadith
where
He asked his companions he asked the companions
of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, a
bunch of them that were gathered together. He
said to them, which one among you can
tell me
what was the reason of revelation or the
meaning of the parable
that is in this ayah?
Right.
Does one of you wish that you would
have a a garden filled with date palms
and vines
And and rivers flow underneath it.
And all types of foods grow from it.
And then you are of old age and
you have young dependents and then it all
gets destroyed. Tags like that parable. Does anyone
of you, Umrs said, know what it means?
He's asking fellow, fellow companions and sahaba.
And they said Allahu Rasoolu Alem. Allah and
the messenger knows best. But he wasn't having
it. He said give me a straight answer.
Say I know or I don't know. Say
I know
or I don't know. And they said we
don't know except for Abdullah ibn Abbas, who
was young. Abdullah ibn Abbas was very young,
at that time. He was still a teenager.
And then Abdullah ibn Abbas said, Yeah, I
think I know.
And then he says, tell me.
And then, Amrall Naba says
that,
is it the example of the rich man?
A rich man
does good deeds and obeys Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala throughout his life
until so this Allah someone that Allah blessed
with wealth
and did many good deeds
throughout his life.
And then towards the end of his life,
towards the end of his life, Shaitan comes
to him.
Reserves to him. Changes him to the point
where they become a sinner.
Where they leave off the good that they
used to do in old age.
And all that work that they've done is
gone. Just like
that whirlwind that destroyed that garden.

importance of hushuluhatima.
It's about how you end.
It's about how you end. May Allah grant
us
May
Allah
make our ends better
and best. Say amen.
To conclude here, And
I think next week we'll continue some of
them ayaats related to
sadaqah.
And hopefully within the next 2, 3 weeks,
we should finish the tour.
