Inshallah, we'll be conducting the class as interactive in terms of
the mode of teaching. Should you have any questions, please slave.
Save it towards the end of the class, then we can engage, receive
your questions, and to the best of our ability, attempt to answer the
same Barak Allahu jamian, so without further ado. Inshallah,
we're going to continue with faws, the short abridgement. We
currently busy with Kitab pahara. We had started last week. The
lesson on Urdu today is a continuation of that particular
lesson. What we had looked at was the compulsory acts of vodu, and
we have gone through the first section there of today be in the
last Subhan wa taala, as is clear from the slide in front of you and
me, we start with the third integral. In other words, the
third compulsory act of volu. Last week, we had discussed that the
Hulu is made up of six integrals. What are they? We will be
repeating ourselves rather often
at the karao Ali Muhammad that repetition is very beneficial in
terms of learning and and teaching. So what are those six?
It starts off with the intention then to wash the face, to wash the
arms, to wipe the head, to wash the feet, and to do all of the
aforementioned in a particular sequence. So to down today, this
evening, in terms of Cape Town, South African time, we are going
to go to athalif Number three. What does number three entail?
Rosluyade ma Ameer fakai, roslu yadahi, a person must wash. The
term Russell Means to to wash. Yadayi. The word yadai is the
plural of the term Yad. Yad refers to um. We're going to speak about
that in a bit. People. Subhan wa taala, so to wash both arms, ma
Amir fakai together with the elbows. In other words, to wash
both arms up to and including the the elbows. Roslu yadahi, maamir
fakai, to wash both arms up to and including the elbows. So what are
we going to look at in this particular slide? What is the
meaning of the word yet? So now, normally, yet is translated as
hand and sometimes as a more correct translation in Allah knows
best could be. So what our scholars do is they give us a
literal meaning of the term Yad, and then they give us the
technical meaning of the word yet. So what is the word yet mean? So
in other words, if you and I were Arabic speakers, and we used the
term Yad in a conversation, what would it mean? What does it imply?
So the literal meaning is minabi il, Katif, um, literally in terms
of the language, the lexical meaning of the word Yad is that
area of the body that starts from the tip of the fingertips and goes
up until the shoulder. So in other words, this whole area is referred
to as the arm. So in Hulu, when you must wash the head, what does
it refer to? Now we go to the technical meaning. Technically in
this particular instance, when ALLAH SubhanA wa Taala tells us
that we must wash our Yad, what does he mean? He refers to the
area as mentioned in the text, from the tip of the fingers up to
and including the elbows. So in other words, if you wanted to look
at the literal meaning of the word Yad, then technically, it refers
to a part of that Yad, which part of the head, that area which
extends from the tip of the fingertips up to and including the
elbows, and Allah SWT knows as best. So there we go. The first
slide, done and dusted. BarakAllahu, very importantly,
number three. What is number three? Refer to washing of the
arms. What is the arm? The arm, literally, is from the tip of the
fingertips until the shoulder. That is basically what we refer to
as Yad in the Arabic language.
Technically speaking, when Allah says you must wash your head, it
doesn't refer to the entire area. It refers to the area from the tip
of your fingers up to and including the elbow and Allah
Nose, nose, fist. What does washing entail. This, again, is a
very simple and straightforward slide, but our scholars go into
detail, which is beautiful in terms of the comprehensive way
that things are addressed. So washing the arm, what is? What
does it entail? It entails shout. So, you know, not perhaps
everybody, but generally people who would have hair on the on the
arm. So when our scholars say you must wash the arm up and including
the elbows, it means that if there's hair on your arm, that
that hair must also be washed. When you look at your arm, you'd
find that you have fingers, obviously, and then they would be
nails on your on your fingers, at the tip of your finger.
Is we find nails that must also be washed, that must also be washed,
that is of quite significance if you look at it. For example, a
person may have something on the nails which prevents the water
from reaching the actual nail that would compromise washing the arm.
The entire arm must be washed, including all the hair in that
area, and including all the nails. So if there's a barrier on the
nail, it means that the washing was not done completely. And Allah
subhana knows, knows best. So all the hair must be washed, all the
nails must be washed. And then, importantly, our scholars, in
terms of the text, it talks about sila atun. Normally we look at the
word sila. It refers to, to goods. What it means in this particular
context would be something extra. For example, a person has a growth
on the arm. So what happens is, you say, No, I must only wash my
my arm, so there's an outgrowth. You say, No, don't I don't have to
wash that. It is including the it. It includes any form of outgrowth
that a person may have on the on the arms. So washing the arm
entails all the hair, all the nails, as well as any form of
outgrowth. And Allah SWT knows knows best here, there's a there's
an added note here, and that is, it is necessary to remove any
barrier from the arms, like a build up of external dirt. So, you
know, maybe a person was working, for example, and there's some sort
of
dirt that was built on his hand, not necessarily dirt,
a dirt in the sense of dirt, as you and I would know it, a lady is
busy working in the kitchen. Maybe, perhaps with dough. Some of
the dough comes onto her arm she now wants to perform wudu that
build up that will serve as a barrier dough on her arms that
must be removed in order that the arm can be washed properly. And
Allah knows knows best. We move on to the next part of the text, and
now we moving on to the next compulsory act. So you make your
intention, you wash your your face. And now we've looked at
washing the arms after washing the arms. What is the next issue that
needs to be done? A Rabi, oh, the fourth compulsory act of ulu. What
does it read like? Must? Hosea in mean, basharathi, Rasi, ausha,
adihi, wala, UBA, alasharadin, fihaddi,
this goes through that again quickly. Must Hosea in mean
basharatir Rasi to wipe a portion. The word Shay means thing. I'm
going to translate it here as a portion. To wipe a portion mean
Bashar at RAS from the area on the head, oh Shari, or a part of a
hair on the head. Let's say, for example, a person happens to be
bald, a person doesn't have any hair on his head or her head. Then
it is sufficient to wipe a portion of the head. A person has hair on
his head, then you must wash a strand or a portion of a strand on
the head. Not wash rather, but wipe Wala. Ubasha aratin, even if
it be a part of a hair. So let's just run through that again. It's
very simple, wipe the head. What is wipe the head mean if you have
no hair on your head, it means that you basically just wipe a
portion of the head. If you have hair on your head, it means you
must at least wipe one strand or a part of that particular strand.
And Allah knows knows best. Now here, what is the difference
between what is the difference between washing and wiping? So our
scholars are going to give a definition, and they're going to
say that must wiping. What does it refer to? Will belly that some
moisture reaches a a part, will soul, belly
that some moisture raises reaches the head, either by way of wiping,
or if a person basically immerses his head into a pile of water. So
that's
an overkill. So to say is going beyond just wiping his washing,
that would also suffice. But the mini memory point is that he he
wipes, and Allah SWT knows knows best, so
causing a little bit of moisture either by wiping or washing a part
of the head, or a part of the hair on the head, as we explained a
moment ago, the important part, and ALLAH SubhanA knows best, the
important part.
The important part is that,
though here that you are waiting, it must be. It must fall within
the confines of the head. It must fall within the confines of the
head. So, for example, I don't have long hair. All of my hair is
contained within the confines of my hair. So if I were to take my
my finger, by way of example, I wet it and.
From you to do. If you do it, you'll get rewarded for it. If you
omit it, Allah will not punish you for it. Let's go into, let's go
into the different acts that are considered to be sunna in terms of
the and let us add value to this very important aspect of of
worship. So what is the first sunnah is, was Sunan? Who the word
Sunan is the plural of the word sunnah. The recommended acts of
Hulu are as follows. Number one would be a Siwa.
Siwa the act of using a tooth stick, a miss work, making this
work in your Hulu. What is the proof for that? The Prophet
sallallahu, alaihi wa sallam, I said in an of quoted tradition,
what is the tradition? Read as laula and ala umati, la amor,
tumbi, siwak, maakul Lin, had I not feared for my followers, and I
was making it difficult upon my followers? La amor, to whom I
would have commanded them be Siwa to perform the siwak ma Akhi udu
in with every Hulu so it is not binding, but it is very much
recommended. And Allah knows what's best now, because he worked
the Prophet in general, he was very particular about his oral
health, and therefore he would use the miss work and recommend it to
such a degree as we have seen a moment ago, that had you not
feared for us, when you'd have made it compulsory upon us to use
it to stick at every Urdu what is the meaning of the word Siwa? The
literal meaning of the word Siwa could be adult. That means to rub.
So if I were to take my finger, by way of example, and rub my teeth
with my finger, that the word see, work literally encompasses that
action of of mine. The word see, work also refers to the actual to
stick. I have a to stick with me. So the word see, what can refer to
the action of of using the to stick, and also it refers to the
actual utensil, in other words, the actual mechanism with which I
make Siwa can Allah knows was best. The technical meaning is as
follows, isti amalu, odil, Arak, AWI, Phil Asmaa, Omaha.
Technically, Siwa refers to what using a certain to stick. And this
happens also to be from the Arak tree. So it doesn't have to be
from the Arak tree, but the Arak tree, the miss work
harvested from the Arak tree, or made up from the Arak tree, is
considered to be the best type of miswak, but it doesn't have to be
from the Arak tree.
Oh, nah, we or any other tree, you find certain Miss works from the
olive tree as well. It has distinct olive taste, but it is,
it is a miss work, nevertheless, it is a seawater. Nevertheless,
the technical meaning of seawater is to use a miss work to do what
and apply to the teeth. In other words, to clean the teeth, or
mahola and that which is around the teeth. In other words, the
gums, and basically, whatever you the tongue in terms of your oral
health. Wamahau la, I'm just remembering now reading through
the text that it includes the teeth, the gums, as well as the
the tongue. So there we've looked at the meaning of the word Siwa
literally as well as technically. And Allah knows knows best. We
move on to further look at the Siwa. When should the person next
you work in wudu? So here we have two opinions. The one opinion is
of Imam Al Ramli, and the other opinion is of Imam Ibn Hajar.
Let's look at Imam Ibn hajis opinion. He says, baina, Rusli,
cafeni, well, mavati. So what's going to happen is you're going to
start the wudu, you're going to say Bismillahi, rahman, rahim, and
you're going to wash your you're going to wash your hands. You're
going to wash your hands now before you gargle your mouth and
rinse your nostrils, what are you going to do? You're going to use
them as work. According to Ibn Hajar, according to Imam aramli.
Imam aramli said Kabul before you even wash your hands. So in other
words, when you sit down and you're going to perform wulu
Before you start saying Bismillah and washing your hands. And then
you're going to have to use the to stick. That is the placement of
the miss work, or the Siwa, if you wanted to, according to a Ramli.
And Allah knows, knows, knows best. We go on to the next point,
as we as as whenever you come across this college and talk about
the Siwa, they would expound upon it a bit, simply because it was so
beloved Walla wa Alam, beloved to the messenger sallAllahu alaihi wa
ali was you could clearly understand from his narrations. So
it is sunnah to make this work at all times. It is sunnah to make
miss work at at all times.
It is sunnah to make this work at all times, but it is further
recommended in specific time frames.
And this further emphasize at Urdu, as we can clearly see and in
terms of Salah, recitation of the Holy Quran. In other words.
Before reciting the Holy Quran, you're going to use the Miss,
what? Very importantly, and here, Islam is very natural religion as
such. And therefore you can find the emphasis on oral hygiene, the
yellowing of the teeth. So it is generally recommended to use the
miss what? But if you find, perhaps, as a result of liquids
that you are consuming, coffee, tea, there's a yellowing of your
teeth. Then at that particular instance, it is more recommended
that you use the the Siwa and Allah knows is best. When you
enter the house, a person is coming back from work and is
entering into the home, if it's a married person and he has
children, by way of example, even unmarried, unmarried person is
coming home, what happens is when he comes home, he's going to
embrace his parents. He's going to embrace his wife, his kids,
whoever he may be staying with. At that particular instance, it is
highly recommended, recommended at all times,
recommended to a greater degree, to a higher degree, When one
enters the house, when one wakes up from the sleep, when one
intends to sleep, and whenever the mouth odor changes, and Allah SWT
knows, knows, knows best does using your brush to clean your
mouth before who counts as you work. That's a very interesting
issue. I want to check if I covered it here. No, I haven't
covered it in terms of the text. So there are, ideally, a person
should use the the miss work, the two stick because of the
significance added to it. The Prophet sallallahu, alayhi wa ali
wasallam would say that
Al miss work, not haratum, Lil fam it cleans the mouth where maruvah
and it is pleasing to Allah. Subhana wa taala. Some scholars
infer they found that it refers specifically to the tooth stick,
you know, like from the Arak tree and something similar.
On the other hand, our scholars are also clear. If you look at the
technical meaning that we look at istiana Siwa, it's basically using
a mechanism with which to clean the teeth and the surrounds, in
other words, the gums and the and the tongue. So in that particular
regard, since it serves that purpose, then the brush can
substitute. Some scholars even talk about, you know, when you
start praying, you don't have anything else but the cloth or
your finger is quite rough. Can you use it, they say it would
suffice, and Allah SWT knows best. So yes, it would suffice, but
ideally, to use the the two stick, and Allah SWT knows was best
because of the properties that the two stick has, we continue being
nila, Suhana wa Tala, Sun Matas miyatu, the next, the next
recommended Act would be sunma tasmiatu. First, the the Sunna in
terms of the Siwa. Secondly, a tasmiah to to say, Bismillahi
Rahman Rahim. When do we say this? Makaru, natun, Bini, Yeti, suna,
Nilu, you say Bismillahi Rahman Rahim, when you start? Now,
remember when you start in the Urdu we had spoken about the
recommended acts, and we've been speaking before that about the
necessary acts, the compulsory acts. So you start by washing the
face. But before that, preceding the washing of the face, which is
a compulsory act, what are you going to do? You're going to wash
your hands, you're going to gargle your mouth, and you're going to
rinse your nostrils, as we will discuss in a moment. So part of
the commitment actually for you to say Bismillah. Rahman. When do you
say Bismillah? You say Bismillah, Rahman, at the point when you
start washing your your hands together with the intention of
performing the recommended acts of ulu
It is only when you come to washing the face that you make the
intention for the compulsory acts, unless you make one intention at
the beginning and you maintain this intention up until the point
where you are washing your your face. Very simply. So what is the
proof for that that you must say Bismillah, Rahman. You don't have
to. It is highly recommended that when you start washing your hands
for wudu, that you say Bismillah, rahman, rahim. That is because the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa ali was Abu Salaman said the one that
will Bismillah that begin the wudu, begin the wudu, in other
words, perform Urdu Bismillah with the name of Allah subhanho wa
taala. If a person forgets, then you should say, whenever he
remembers, Bismillahi, oh, you know when we're familiar, when
we're eating and drinking, we should say Bismillah at the
beginning. But for some reason or the other, we forgot to say at the
beginning. The moment you remember, you should say
Bismillahi WA. Likewise, in this particular instance, you were
really well into your Urdu. And now you remember, hey, I did not
say Bismillah, Rahman Rahim. At that particular juncture, you
should say Bismillahi rahmaniyah Rahim. We go on to the next issue.
So it is to use the Siwa number two to say Bismillahi Rahman
Rahim. Number three was rust two cafe. Now, if you can, if you can
look at the Arabic terminology, washing caffeine, the word calf,
this is basically what refers to as the Caffe In other words, the
the hand and not the arm. The arm is compulsory to wash the entire
arm, as explained previously. Here we're talking about washing al
caffeine, washing the hands. What is the proof for that? The Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa.
Again, please, because my sound was off, not my sound in terms of
the microphone, but my sound in terms of the
computer. Walikum Asmaa Ketu,
question about the intention.
The intention has to be, for example, with the face. Since this
is the face. Is the first,
the first integral
mission has to be simultaneous with the face. But I'm not exactly
sure what that entails. So like, let's say we use any form of the
intention, like, I intend to lift minor virtual impurity, or I
intend from the Ludo, or any, any of those valid forms, does the
intention? Does when we say it's simultaneous? Does that mean in my
head I have to exactly say those words as I wash my face? Or does
it when we say simultaneous, it just means that I know what I'm
doing that is lifting minor ritual impurity.
Barak, Allah, afikung, thank you for the question, Allah, the audio
My understanding is the latter. In other words, you need to be
conscious of the fact that you're engaging in wudu, and through you
are removing a state of minor ritual impurity that would
suffice.
Okay, yeah, so, okay, okay, let's thank you for clarifying. Because
I thought when, when you said simultaneous, we have to state
exactly those words as we watch the face. But okay, thank you.
Yeah. Look, when you, when you, when you articulate the intention,
the articulation of the intention that that is something which is
recommended. The place of the intention is the heart.
So in other words, you have to be conscious of what you are doing.
So when you engage in the act of worship, at that point of
engagement, you are consciously aware of what you are doing, not
in your subconscious, in your four conscious and that is basically
what our scholars mean by intention.
Of our teachers, some were very particular about it, because
sometimes we can become very pedantic about the intention and
articulation of the intention, and inadvertently, it can negatively
impact on the acts of worship. So whilst we are learning, it's
important to understand sometimes the complexities that relate to
certain actions, but also to keep it simple at the same time.
So the intention is really a very simple phenomenon of being
conscious of what we are doing
like you do any other voluntary action.
The intention is there to ensure that whatever you're doing is not
involuntary, but rather it is a voluntary, conscious action, and
that suffices
no one knows best.
Thank you. I have, I have one more question
in the chef a school when we say washing, that means water has to
flow to like every inch of the city are washing.
Is that correct?
That is correct? Yes. Okay, so
here I'm having trouble understanding something. So when,
when we're washing the face
the way the so I missed the way the chef a school counts like as
washing one time. That means water has to touch every part of what is
the face. But
it doesn't seem to me like putting water in your hands and then
washing your and then putting that water on your face will suffice as
one washing of the face. Because it doesn't seem to me that water
will actually flow to every every inch of the face you'll have to
wipe at a certain point, certain parts of the face. You understand
what I mean. Like, yes, yes, yes, yes.
So it seems to me like, it seems to me like you have to do multiple
you have to put water in your hands multiple times and wash your
face, like concentrate on each area of your face, and then that
will count as one.
Is that incorrect? Look, that idea is premised on the concept of of
flowing.
So we draw, we draw a distinction between, you know, washing and
wiping. So it's really the extent of the amount of water that you
use. So washing would be that when you like wash your face, obviously
using your hands, and then
when water has reached your entire face, then there's one or two,
because it's washing and not wiping, there will be one or two
drops of water that will fall, not necessarily. It may just be made
in your face, but you're using that amount of water that it's not
wiping, it's washing. How do you determine that that
one.
Two drops of water would fall and that would basically be indicative
of the fact that you were washing and not wiping
so the some of our scholars are of the opinion that you know washing
doesn't necessarily mean that you have to have a whole lot of drops
which falls off. It must just be more than wiping. So to say, it
mustn't be determined as as wiping but washing. And I think,
like many times, we use a little bit of water, but I'm able to
spread all of that water over my face, and it covers every inch of
my face, and maybe only one droplet, sometimes not even a
single droplet falls down that is still considered to be washing and
alanos best,
yeah, thank you for that. I just yeah, that's something we can. We
can. We can chat as we go along. Inshallah, think about it a bit
more, and we can pick it up again in the last baraka of hill.
Are there
any other questions? Inshallah,
I think our time is also just about come to an end. BarakAllahu,
if there are no other questions, and then we can, we can, we can
defer till next week. And as brother Raheel also said, you can
post your questions in the forums as well. And thank you for
affording me this opportunity and a great pleasure to
to meet you all, though we haven't interacted as such, but Inshallah,
in weeks to come, we will Find the opportunity to intact paragraphs
in your prayers. Asmaa,
