Welcome to the prayer, welcome to the success,
welcome to the success.
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.
There is no god but Allah.
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.
Allah
is
the greatest, Allah is the greatest.
My dear brothers and sisters, when the Prophet
ﷺ and the Muslims who came with him
or after him or before him to Medina
joined their hands together with the indigenous people
and Muslims of Medina, when they all came
together and they formed that first community, not
only was their presence felt, but actually the
presence of what they represent and the presence
of their value system was immediately felt and
it was very impactful.
You can say that there was a massive
or a serious or a significant shift in
Medina that took place within perhaps days, months,
definitely in less than a year.
The Muslims, their value system, and mind you,
that most of the Medina, most of the
Qur'an had not been revealed yet at
this point.
With whatever of the Qur'an that they
had, that they brought with them from Mecca,
and the values, especially the belief system as
well as the ethics, that they were taught
and brought with them to Medina, that by
itself caused that change in Medina.
So the question that we need to ask
ourselves, my dear brothers and sisters, as we
gather today in one of the houses of
Allah SWT, perhaps one of the most beautiful,
one of the largest Islamic centers in America,
we have to ask ourselves and we have
to reflect as a community on this essential
aspect of our faith.
Community engagement and social responsibility.
What is our impact here as a community?
Allah SWT has blessed us with so many
resources and skills and opportunities.
So we really have to ask ourselves, and
we've been around for a while.
We're not a young community.
Many of us have been here for years
and decades, so we have to ask ourselves,
what is the impact that we have as
Muslims living in Memphis?
Or as Memphians who happen to be Muslims?
The city has a very rich history and
cultural diversity.
We are uniquely positioned in a very, very
special place to contribute positively to the society
through our local efforts.
What Muslims here in Memphis can do will
be seen and will be felt, not only
nationally but globally.
And it's about time for us to really
engage in a much meaningful way than we
have.
Alhamdulillah, there are great contributions for Muslims.
There are great changes that were done.
A great example is Masjid al-Mu'minun and
what the Muslim community there did.
But my dear brothers and sisters, we cannot
continue.
And I would quote the pastor from Hartsong.
We cannot forever celebrate the accomplishments of the
past decade.
We need to create more memories and more
accomplishments.
So today I wanted to start with a
reminder of our collective responsibility as a community.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala calls upon us
as Muslims.
See, as Muslims, wherever we go, wherever we
reside, we have a responsibility not only to
ourselves and our families and our ummah that
we belong to, but the locality in which
we live and reside and make a living.
We have to be engaged.
It's not even an option.
And it's not me saying this.
Allah azzawajal the Almighty says, كُنتُم, you were,
as a community, خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ, the best community.
أُخْرِجَتْ, it was pulled out.
It was brought out للناس.
For the people.
You're meant for the people.
You're supposed to be there for the people.
You're supposed to contribute.
You're supposed to engage.
You're supposed to provide solutions.
You're supposed to provide guidance.
You're supposed to set an example for others.
This is the responsibility that we have.
And it's not an option for us.
We can't say, well, it's optional.
No, it's not optional.
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, this
is a responsibility upon you that some of
you have to fulfill.
And if they fail, then it's a collective
failure.
Let there be from amongst you, some
that will carry this load.
Either you all carry it, or some of
you will do a good job.
They will do enough to suffice the rest.
So in the absence of effective, noticeable, visible
impact, we become all responsible.
So Allah says,
Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala says, your role is to enjoin
what is good.
Your role is to advocate for what is
right.
Create positive change.
Be a catalyst for positive change.
And you can't do that without engaging.
Somehow, at some level.
You can't do that without contributing.
And you forbid evil.
You stand against wrongdoing.
You stand against injustice.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala puts this
responsibility upon us.
And I know that it may not always
feel comfortable to have these kind of conversations.
But it's one that we must have.
And it's an issue that we must confront.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala also calls upon
us to help one another in matters of
goodness and righteousness.
As a matter of fact, Allah azza
wa jalla in surah al-Mujadila, Allah azza
wa jalla says that our conversations, you know
these side talks, intimate conversations, these meetings that
we have, whenever we try to strategize or
talk about what we're supposed to do or
whatever we're supposed to be focusing on, these
conversations should not be about you know, empty
politics or things that we...
Most of our conversations are really frivolous.
They're really worthless.
They don't produce any actionable item.
They don't produce any results, real results.
Most of them we're just entertaining one another
or unfortunately in some cases people would be
gossiping or saying negative things about each other.
And Allah azza wa jalla in the Quran
There's
no good in most of their intimate conversations.
These secret conversations be it over the phone
or in chat groups or in WhatsApp groups
or in person.
Most of these conversations bear no fruits.
As a matter of fact again, their conversations
that when they are finally on the day
of judgment, when we are shown these conversations,
most of these conversations unfortunately will be something
that we regret.
And we wish we have not engaged in
these secret messages or chats or talks.
So Allah says,
Except he who commands or
advocates for charity or goodness or to reconcile
between people.
These kinds of conversations are really meaningful and
they are fruitful and they are beneficial.
They will benefit you and they will benefit
your community.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
O believers, if
you were to have intimate conversations amongst yourselves,
Do not
engage in conversations that involve or that contain
sins, إثم or transgression or disobedience to the
Prophet ﷺ.
And instead, let your conversations, your discussions, your
talks, your social interactions be fruitful.
And instead, let it be about al-bir,
righteousness, taqwa, piety, and obedience to the Prophet
ﷺ.
Fulfilling the Prophet ﷺ's command.
The Prophet ﷺ entrusted us with whatever he
left behind, his legacy, even if it's one
ayah, even if it's one teaching.
The Prophet ﷺ came to solve problems, to
ensure prosperity ﷺ.
And he entrusted us with all of that.
If it's not part of our focus, then
we're actually failing our commitment to the Prophet
ﷺ.
The Prophet ﷺ was asked, this is a
profound question, that he was asked ﷺ, and
his answer was even more profound.
He was asked by a group of people
who were very passionate, who were very eager
to know what Allah, their Lord, their most
beloved, the one that they love the most,
what Allah عز و جل wants from them
or what Allah عز و جل loves the
most.
See the sahaba came to the Prophet ﷺ
and they told him, we love Allah.
And they demonstrated actions and behavior and lifestyle
changes and commitments on their part, that really
reflects that of someone who is true and
sincere in that claim.
They made all kinds of sacrifices.
They were the most generous of people.
They were the most courageous of people.
Some of them gave up their lives.
Some of them gave up their property.
Some of them gave up everything.
May Allah be pleased with them.
And they came to the Prophet ﷺ and
they said, we love Allah
And the response was,
If you truly love Allah, then follow me,
Allah عز و جل will love you in
return.
But they once came to the Prophet ﷺ
and they asked this profound question.
What are the most, or what is, who
are the most beloved people to Allah?
Who does Allah عز و جل love the
most?
Who does Allah
عز و جل love the most?
What kind of a person, what kind of
individuals, do Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى love the
most?
And the Prophet ﷺ said, أَنْفَعُهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ Those
who bring the most benefit to others.
Those who bring the most benefit to others.
Because if you love Allah
you will love Allah's creation.
And if you love Allah
you want to please Allah عز و جل,
you will try to benefit and contribute to
the prosperity of Allah
And the most noble and the most honorable
creation of Allah عز و جل are human
beings, fellow human beings.
And the most honorable of humans are those
who believe in Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
They honor one another and they extend their
grace and their mercy and their benefit goes
beyond their own circles and communities.
They care about everyone.
And this is exactly what the Prophet ﷺ
taught us.
His arrival to Medina was a rahmah not
only to his followers who believed in him
and gave him their pledges, but it was
also to those who resided next to them.
Be it Christians, Jews, or even pagans.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ continued upon
this path.
And I'll just give you one example and
I'll conclude with this.
You know, a very wealthy man by the
name of Abu Talha, known as Abu Talha.
He was very wealthy.
But he was mushrik.
He was a Muslim.
He proposed to a single mother that we
know as Umm Sulaym.
And this is, mind you, before the legislation
or the revelation came down prohibiting Muslims, especially
women, to marry non-Muslims.
There was no prohibition at this point.
When Abu Talha proposed to Umm Sulaym, and
he can provide all kinds of resources for
her.
So she said, إِنَّكَ مُرُءٌ مُشْرِكٌ You are
a mushrik.
You're not upon my religion.
No matter how wealthy you are, no matter
what you can do for me, it means
nothing to me.
And if you want to marry me, then
you will have to embrace Islam.
And that would be my mahr.
That's all I want.
Your Islam.
So Abu Talha thought about it, and he
decided to accept Islam.
They say,
So her mahr, the dowry that she received,
was the greatest of all.
Why?
Because not only was she going to, inshallah
ta'ala, be rewarded for him accepting Islam,
and for every good deed, but Abu Talha
turned out to be one of the greatest
companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
And his generosity was known.
And Allah ﷻ blessed him.
And when Allah عز و جل revealed, لَن
You will
not attain righteousness until you spend from that
which you love the most.
Abu Talha came to the Prophet ﷺ, and
he gave bayruha to the Prophet ﷺ, with
more than 600 palm trees in it, to
attain righteousness, and to attain piety.
Who was the inspiration?
Who was behind it?
Someone that knew that her role in life
was not just to have a very comfortable
life and a happy marriage, but rather someone
that was living for a mission, for a
purpose.
Something bigger and greater than many of us
think about.
I ask Allah عز و جل to make
you and I of those who listen and
follow the best of what they listen to.
May Allah ﷻ allow us to have positive
impact in our communities and in our neighborhoods.
Dear brothers and sisters, here are some practical
ways we can contribute and engage effectively.
And I want everyone, especially those who are
in positions of power and leadership and were
blessed with resources or skills, including, by the
way, our students.
Those who are members of the various MSAs
and different youth organizations, you're all included in
this.
And I want to remind you that the
Prophet ﷺ, and we were told this by
a former Jewish rabbi that accepted Islam and
embraced this beautiful religion, Abdullah ibn Salam, one
of the most educated rabbis of his time.
This companion said that
when the Prophet ﷺ arrived Medina, I went
to greet him or to meet with him
and to get to know him.
And as soon as I laid an eye
on him, I knew that his face was
not the face of a liar.
This is not a man capable of liar.
This is a very sincere, honest person.
And that radiated, that showed on the face
and the demeanor of the Prophet ﷺ.
And he said, of the first things that
I heard from the Messenger of Allah in
that speech that he gave, when he first
arrived Medina, his speech was,
O people, spread peace.
Spread peace.
And feed.
And maintain the ties of your
kinship.
And pray at night
when everyone is asleep.
Get up and pray.
And the ulema say, Subhanallah, out of the
four things that he mentions, the Prophet ﷺ
in this speech, three of them have to
do with showing kindness, or reaching out to
other people, and benefiting other people.
The only thing that is considered to be
a personal ibadah, a spiritual exercise, is qiyam
al-layl.
Something that you do between you and Allah
ﷻ secretly.
But everything else is about benefiting others.
And keep in mind, when the Prophet ﷺ
said this, by the way, to the sahaba,
most of them, their arham, their relatives, and
kinship, and their, you know, were non-Muslims.
They were not Muslims, most of them.
Some of these companions, you know, they may
have been these individuals, they may have been
the only Muslim in the family, and everyone
else was not.
Yet the Prophet ﷺ told them to show
kindness and maintain ties with your kinship.
And he said, if you do that, تَدْخُلُوا
You will enter Jannah in peace.
So some suggestions that I have, and figure
out your own contribution within your community, within
your neighborhood, within your county, within your city,
within your district, whatever it is, contribute and
engage, my dear brothers and sisters.
One, volunteer for local initiatives.
Support programs such as community clean-ups, food
drives, educational services.
There are all kinds of services.
And we cannot, and I'm just going to
be very honest, and I hope inshallah, no
one finds offense in this.
We cannot resign these things just to certain
people or certain categories, or certain segments, or
certain groups within our community.
This is collective, all.
We're all Muslims.
We're all one race.
We're all one community.
We can't just outsource this.
And sometimes we even use words like outsource.
What is that supposed to mean?
Since when do we outsource?
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ, he
wanted to join the ranks of Muslims and
fight with them.
He said, because his tribe men, his tribe
men are fighting in Uhud.
And the Prophet ﷺ said to him, do
you believe in what we believe in?
Are you part of us?
He said, no, I just want to fight
along my tribe men.
But he was mushrik, he was a Muslim.
He said, no, we don't seek help nor
do we want anyone to fight for us.
Only those who believe in what we believe
in.
Because we fight for Allah.
said, what does it take for me to
join you?
He said, to bear witness that there is
no God worthy to be worshipped except Allah,
that Muhammad ﷺ is a messenger of Allah,
and that you abide by whatever we abide
by and you grow into Islam.
He said, okay, I'm willing to do that.
He takes his shahada.
He joins the ranks.
And then he fights.
And then he is killed.
And then the Prophet ﷺ tells the sahaba,
whoever wants to see a man who landed
in Jannah, who made it to Jannah without
making a single sujood to Allah, let him
look at this man, who died as a
shaheed.
But the Prophet ﷺ, he did not approve
of him joining our ranks or being part
of their effort or their endeavor unless he
embraced Islam.
That is your key to be part of
this community.
That's the identity.
Anything else doesn't matter.
So we cannot outsource things to other people.
We do everything in-house.
So, volunteer, figure out, and keep in mind
always that you're not representing yourself or your
culture or your nationality or your language.
You're representing Islam and Muslims.
You're representing Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
You're carrying Islam on you.
It should show not only in your name,
but it should show in your akhlaq, in
your manners, in your efficiency, in your excellence,
in your sincerity.
Number two, collaboration with other partners, whether it's
government agencies that are in good standing, local
or federal, as well as interfaith groups.
In a meaningful way.
And I urge and I caution that these
things have to be done according to our
agenda, according to our vision.
And tonight I'm told or I'm asked to
remind you of the annual dinner that we
usually have jointly with Heart Song community.
So, this year it's their turn.
So, keep that in mind.
Inshallah, 6.30, right?
Inshallah ta'ala.
Number three, establish outreach programs in the masjid
and be part of those outreach programs.
And again, it's not something that we should
just, you know, again, resign to one or
a few individuals and overwhelm them.
Communities where they have very healthy, robust, well
-structured outreach programs, they do a phenomenal job.
A few days ago I was in a
community where almost every day they have someone,
a brother or a sister, taking shahada.
Last Friday after Jummah, I'm introduced to someone
who actually was called to Islam by someone
that converted to Islam two months ago.
That person was motivated by those individuals that
gave him shahada.
He went and he started talking about Islam
to his co-workers.
And if we do this chain reaction, and
keep in mind the Prophet ﷺ said, لَا
If Allah was to save
one person, was to guide one person through
It's better
than any accomplishment that you can think of.
So be part of that actively or actually
proactively.
Support local businesses.
We should think about, again, our contribution.
What are we going to do?
Is our presence and impact felt?
Number five.
My dear brothers and sisters, advocate for social
justice.
What we see around us impacts us.
And what goes around comes around.
We can sit around and complain about crime
rates.
We can sit around and complain about poverty.
But if we don't do anything about it,
then we have no one to blame except
ourselves.
So inshallah ta'ala, I'm hoping inshallah, in
We will have
great initiatives and programs.
And inshallah ta'ala, we can come together
as a community and be much more active
And I
ask Allah عز و جل to allow us
to see the fruits of these intentions and
these plans, inshallah ta'ala.
And keep in mind that just simply by
making your intention or making a commitment, even
if you don't get to live to see
those ideas or plans come to fruition, that
intention, that support of yours will count with
Allah
I ask Allah عز و جل to guide
me and to guide anyone here in the
leadership of the greater Memphis Muslim community, inshallah,
to do whatever would please Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى
and bring maximum benefits.
We ask Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى to make us
of those who facilitate good and those who
stand against evil.
