Allāhu Akbar Lā ilāha ill
'Allāh That
is why in this verse Allāh ﷻ reminds
us as believers and tells us, O you
who believed, fear Allāh ﷻ as He should
be feared, and die not.
Make sure that you don't die except as
Muslims in a state of full submission to
Allāh ﷻ.
O mankind, be mindful of your
Lord who created you from a single soul.
And from it He created
its mate.
And from them
both He created many men and women.
So therefore be mindful of Allāh.
And be
mindful of the rights of the wombs that
bore you.
For Allāh is
watching over you.
Allāh ﷻ monitors everything that you do.
Consider yourself to be under surveillance.
You can't hide from Allāh ﷻ.
Be aware of that reality and live your
life accordingly.
My dear brothers and sisters, today I want
to reflect on verses from the Qur'an
that we are actually encouraged to recite as
part of an entire surah.
Surah al-Kahf is something that we are
recommended, that is recommended to us to recite
every Friday.
In that surah we find these three verses
that we should really pause and reflect upon
and see how we can bring about some
changes in our lives so that we are
of those whom Allāh ﷻ says when they
find a reminder in the Qur'an, when
the Qur'an comes and admonishes them, they
listen, they pay attention, and their hearts respond
to that reminder.
If they need to change, they change.
If they need to transform, they transform.
If they need to reform, they reform.
If they need to progress, they progress.
Whatever they need to do, they do it,
they implement it because they are well aware
that these words come from Allāh ﷻ.
And they are well aware of the serious
consequences of those who listen, who are reminded
by the words of Allāh ﷻ and walk
away from it.
Like there is something in their ears, clogging
their ears and they are not listening.
Allāh ﷻ warns us not to be of
those people.
In this very surah, later on Allāh ﷻ
talks to us about how unjust is a
person who when they are reminded of the
verses or the ayat of Allāh ﷻ are
recited to them, when they listen to them,
they walk away, ignoring them.
So Allāh ﷻ tells us,
This is from the scenes of the
Day of Judgment when Allāh ﷻ makes the
mountains move.
And when Allāh ﷻ brings everyone, resurrects and
gathers everyone.
And no one is left behind.
No one is going
to escape.
No one is going to be able to
hide.
No one is going to be declining on
that day, the invitation.
Everyone is going to be brought before Allāh
ﷻ.
Then Allāh ﷻ says,
Allāh ﷻ says,
and they will be brought, they will be
set before their Lord Allāh ﷻ in lines
or rows.
And it will be said to them, now
indeed you have come to us as we
created you the first time.
Nay, but you thought we had appointed no
meeting for you.
You thought this wasn't going to happen.
This will be said to them, mocking them
on the Day of Judgment, those who denied
that.
As for those of us who don't dare
to deny this, as for those of us
who believe in this and want to live
our lives according to this.
Hopefully that won't be said to us.
Those of us who will stand on that
day, we will know that,
This is what Allāh ﷻ has promised
us.
This is
what the Most Merciful has promised.
And indeed those prophets and messengers that came
to us and we believed in them, spoke
the truth.
That would be inshallah ta'ala our reaction.
Only if we follow, if we take heed
and we prepare for that day and we
change.
So what would happen on that day?
What's the point here?
The point here is what comes next.
Allāh ﷻ says in the following ayah,
And the book of record will be
set.
Our deeds, everything will be set right before
us.
And
then you will find the criminals, the wrongdoers.
Those who went about their lives, crushing everyone
in their way.
Those who have done injustices to everyone.
Those who wrong other people thinking that they
can get away with it.
They will stand before Allāh ﷻ on that
day.
And
you will see them, they will be visibly
nervous and in state of distress.
Those who used to walk around arrogantly, showing
no remorse or sorrow, on that day they
will be very, very, very sorry for everything
that they have done.
Before they're even called out, before they're held
accountable, before anything happens, as soon as the
scene begins, and the books are brought, they
will be in distress.
And not only that, but they will actually
cry out.
They will say, وَيَقُولُونَ يَا وَيْلَنَا Woe to
us!
What is the matter with
this book?
Leaving
no small deal, small minute detail or big
except that it enumerated it.
Everything is written, everything is recorded, everything will
be brought up.
They will come to that realization that day.
They are being told, we are being told
in this life that that is going to
be the case.
They are only going to finally understand this
and cry out on that day when it's
too late.
Woe to us!
What is the matter with this book?
It left nothing behind.
Even the things that we do and we
forget will be brought before us.
And then Allah SWT says,
Your Lord wrongs no one.
Allah does not wrong anyone.
So my dear brothers and sisters, my reminder
to myself and all of you, may Allah
SWT bless you, is to develop this sense
of accountability before Allah SWT.
It is one of the most essential aspects
of our faith that we believe in.
That on the day of judgment, we are
all going to face everything that we have
done.
We are all going to have to answer
for everything that we have done.
No matter how small it is.
Whosoever does
the smallest, even an atom's weight or size
of deed, of good deed, will see it.
And whosoever
does that much of evil deed, will have
to answer for it and they will be
accountable.
The Prophet ﷺ, in a hadith, in a
statement, in a declaration, that should terrify each
and every single one of us.
It should terrify each and every single one
of us.
That the feet
of the son of Adam, that applies to
all of us, will not move on the
day of judgment.
Meaning that person will not, no one of
us, none of us will be able to
walk further, go any further on the day
of judgment.
Whether it's to Jannah or Hellfire, doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter where the destination or the desired
destination is.
No one is going to go anywhere.
Everyone will be stopped.
As Allah عز و جل said in the
Stop them.
Stop them.
As everyone is running in utter chaos, Allah
says, stop them, pause.
Everyone, stop where you're at.
No one is going to
be able to choose where they want to
go.
You're not going to be free on that
day.
Stop them.
They will be questioned.
They will be asked.
إِنَّهُمْ مَسْؤُونَ So the Prophet صلى الله عليه
وسلم tells us in this hadith what it
is that we're going to be held accountable
for.
What are the exact...
You see, this is...
Imagine someone telling you that you're going to
be tested and then they give you the
exact exam, the questions that you'll be asked
and tells you prepare.
You'll be asked these exact same questions.
One, two, three, four.
You better have a good answer for these
questions.
His life and how
he spent it.
How did he spend your life?
What were the 70, 80, 90, more or
less years?
What were they all about?
The entire lifespan.
How did he spend your life?
What did you spend your life on?
What did you do?
What did you produce in your life?
Lifetime, lifespan is a very precious...
It's the most precious thing that we have.
Actually, it's priceless.
Number two.
And his knowledge.
What he did with it.
You learned.
You gained experience.
You had knowledge and you had expertise.
What did you do with it?
What did it do for you?
What did it produce to other people?
What have you done?
Number three.
And then wealth.
Your wealth.
Where did it come from?
And subhanallah, this is very interesting.
Because when it comes to wealth, Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala, we're going to be held
accountable for not only what we did with
it, but where it came from.
Both.
Where did it come from?
And where was it spent on?
Everything.
Every penny.
May Allah forgive us.
And about his body.
Your body.
How did you wear out
your body?
What happened?
What did you use your strength, your physical
strength in?
In another narration,
About youth.
Your youth.
In other words, your strength.
That vital stage of your life that Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala allowed you to experience.
Where you can produce the most.
Where you can gain the most.
What did you do with it?
How did you wear out your strength?
Where did it go?
What happened to your body that Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala gave you?
So these are the questions that we're going
to be asked about.
And a wise person is a person who
actually holds himself accountable and asks himself these
questions before it's too late.
And this is what our scholars in the
past used to encourage us to do.
Ask yourself these questions.
What have I done?
You know, Ibn Mas'ud says The believer,
the sense of accountability that the believer has.
He says the believer sees
his sins and his offenses like a mountain
that rises above him and is about to
fall on him.
They weigh down on the believer.
The believer takes his sins seriously.
Be it minor or major.
It's a big deal.
Because it's not about how small or how
infrequently it happened.
It's about who was offended, who was disobeyed.
So the believer looks at his sins, holds
himself accountable and says Oh my God, what
have I done?
And what do I need to do to
redeem myself?
On the other hand,
As for the wicked or the hypocrite
He just sees his sins and his offenses
like a fly that just came and landed
on his nose and he did this.
It's gone.
That's it.
Get over it.
It's okay.
It's a big deal.
It's nothing.
And that is why the wicked person continues
to sin, transgress and hurt people and offend
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala until they stand
before Allah عز و جل My dear brothers
and sisters, remember that whatever we have in
this life, in this finite life is given
to us and we're going to be held
accountable for it.
And then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will
ask us what we did.
And then whatever we did with it will
determine our fate.
I'll conclude with a beautiful and powerful statement
by Imam Ahmad رحمه الله تعالى because the
number one pursuit, people say pursuit of happiness,
the number one pursuit of most people is
wealth.
So here is the reality of wealth.
Because we exhaust, you see the things that
the Prophet ﷺ talked about, we're going to
be held accountable, our lives, our youth or
our strength, our health and our knowledge.
Most of us, if not all of us,
we dedicate and devote for the pursuit of
what?
Wealth.
And the value of these things that we
wear out or we exhaust depends.
I'm talking about worldly standards.
I'm not talking about akhira.
Depends on how much wealth we're able to
accumulate.
Oh, he did very well.
We look at a person and we say,
oh, we look at his bank account, he
did very well for himself.
Said who?
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will ask
that person, where did it come from and
how was it spent?
And if none of it was spent by
the way, we may look at the person,
we envy the person, mashallah has a lot
of money.
But none of it was spent properly or
fee sabeelillah as it should.
That person will carry all that wealth on
the day of judgment, the Prophet shallallahu alaihi
wa sallam tells us.
I'll just give you an example, speaking of
zakah.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless the
brothers and sisters who are doing the zakah
services here.
My dear brothers and sisters, wallahi we're not
doing anyone a favor, we're doing ourselves a
favor.
Because Allah says,
those who treasure or those who keep and
withhold their gold and silver and their wealth.
And they do not spend it as they're
supposed to.
Give them glad tidings, don't congratulate them on
anything.
Give them glad tidings of a very painful
punishment.
When it
will be brought on the day of judgment
and heated in hellfire.
And their faces,
their foreheads, their backs, their sides, everywhere, from
every direction they will be branded and ironed
with it.
They will be burnt with it.
And it will be
said to them, this is what you have
kept for yourself.
Get a taste of
it.
Here's what it tastes like.
That's the reality.
So we need to be very careful.
You see, Imam Ahmad says,
Wealth is either your servant or your
master.
You choose.
you use it to obey Allah and please
Allah, whether in the way you earn it,
or the way you manage it or you
spend it, then it is indeed your servant.
And if it causes you to disobey
Allah, then that wealth is your master.
So decide for yourself.
May Allah make us of the servants of
Allah, and the masters of everything else.
حاسبوا أنفسكم قبل أن تحاسبوا take account of
yourselves before you are taken account or you
are taken to account before you are held
accountable make sure that you actually audit yourself
make sure you audit yourself take inventory of
your deeds and your actions and what you
have done and who you have hurt and
who owes you what hold yourself accountable before
it's too late
قَبْلَ أَنْ تُوزَنَ عَلَيْكُمْ and make sure that
you weigh your deeds accurately don't exaggerate don't
think that oh wow I'm doing mashallah a
lot said who?
said who?
I'm doing very well you know one time
someone said well sheikh I don't even know
what I've done wrong to deserve what I'm
suffering mashallah this is called
this is a problem this is a problem
this wasn't the way of even prophets and
messengers whom Allah Azawajal has purified don't speak
like this they don't speak like that the
believer is very humble even if they don't
suffer anything by the way you know in
the past when they didn't suffer if everything
is going well nothing is going wrong everything
is fine in their lives they will be
afraid and scared and nervous you know maybe
am I being lured into something here because
they know believers get tested in this life
so when someone comes to me and says
what have I done?
I'm like you're completely oblivious well you might
want to ask your spouse ask your wife
ask your children ask your neighbors ask your
cousins ask your parents ask your business partners
ask people around have I done anything wrong?
don't just assume that you're just pure that
you're everyone's victim you have never done anything
you have never committed any offense وَزِينُ أَعْمَالَكُ
weigh your deeds and your actions and your
contributions properly fairly and humbly
عَلَيْكُمْ before it's weighed for you on the
day of judgment and then on that day
you're going to know the true value of
your deeds you see I'll conclude with Imam
Ghazali's beautiful and powerful statement and this should
be the mindset of each and every single
one of us this is what I want
for myself maybe one day inshallah ta'ala
and this is what I hope for each
and every single one of my beloved brothers
and sisters to have this mindset he said
ليس الخوف he said fear true fear of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala when we say
this person is God fearing he said true
fear of Allah is not to fear the
punishment of Allah I mean we should fear
the punishment of Allah but you shouldn't even
you should be a step you should think
a step before that
فِي حَقِّ he said true fear is to
be to fear that you will stand before
Allah on the day of judgment and be
questioned for your shortcomings and for for actually
failing your responsibility for not fulfilling Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala's rights in other words you
fear that moment not what comes after that
moment not the punishment but even that moment
الْهَوَى فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى as for the
one who fears their stand before Allah I
know I'm going to be held I know
some great people who say things like you
know what I'm going to give up this
I'm not going to worry about this I'm
going to forgive I'm going to pardon why?
he's like because if I don't if I
hold on to it that is going to
prolong my reckoning or my hisab and my
stand before Allah and I don't want to
be there I'm going to let go of
it in this life I'll forgive yeah that's
it I'll take it's not even a loss
they're thinking about it we think it's a
loss if you give up something for Allah
in this life you think it's a loss
but someone who's God fearing they're thinking at
a different level they're thinking if I hold
on to this grudge if I hold on
to this matter or to this case and
I continue to fight it on the day
of judgment if it's not settled in this
life it will have to be settled on
the day of judgment which means it will
prolong my reckoning and my account and my
stand before Allah and that's not where I
want to be you see it's like someone
who wants to settle a case a civil
case before they go to court before they
stand before the judge it's not worth all
the headache let's settle it out of court
what is it that you want?
okay whatever let's just settle this matter in
this dunya I don't want it to be
brought up on the day of judgment can
we do that?
that's true fear and individuals who are like
that they have the most pleasant of lives
the most comfortable of lives because they have
very little to worry about they get rid
of that's true fear of Allah may Allah
allow us to develop that level of fear
of Him may
Allah allow us to develop may Allah allow
us to develop that level of fear of
Him that level of fear may Allah allow
us to develop that level of fear of
Him may Allah allow us to develop that
level of fear of Him may Allah allow
us to develop of Him may Allah allow
us to develop that level of fear may
Allah allow us to develop of Him may
Allah allow us to develop that
level of fear may Allah allow us to
develop that level of fear may Allah allow
us to develop that level of fear that
level of fear of Him Allah is the
greatest All praise
is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds
The Beneficent, the Merciful Master of the Day
of Judgment It is You we worship and
You we ask for help Guide us to
the straight path The path of those on
whom You have bestowed Your grace and
those who believe and do righteousness, and learn
the truth, and learn patience.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of
the worlds.
Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgment.
It is You we worship and You we
ask for help.
Guide us to the straight path.
The path of those on whom You have
bestowed Your blessings, not of those who have
evoked Your anger, nor of those who have
gone astray.
Amen.
When the victory of Allah and the conquest
comes, and You see the people entering in
the religion of Allah in groups, then glorify
the praise of your Lord and ask His
forgiveness.
Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.
