li sadri wa yassir li amri wahlul uqdatan
min lisani yafqahu qawli I praise Allah Almighty
and I send prayers and blessings upon Prophet
Muhammad ﷺ His noble family, righteous companions and
all those that follow them with the right
guidance until the Day of Judgment.
Ameen Glory be to you, O Allah!
We have no knowledge except that which You
have taught us.
Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All
-Wise.
My dear brothers and sisters Assalamu alaykum wa
rahmatullahi wa barakatuh I hope everyone is doing
well on this fine night and we continue
with the tafsir of Surah Al-Baqarah and
in the verses before this Allah Subhanahu wa
ta'ala was telling us about some of
what Ibrahim a.s. and Yaqub a.s
some of what they had advised their descendants,
their children during their lives and even right
before their deaths and telling us those stories
and the importance of what they were advised
and what the response of their descendants was
and now Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala is
mentioning something, an argument and the proper response
to that argument so after mentioning a lot
of those stories again there is going to
be some argumentation and we will see with
the ayah that we are covering today that
there is a reason of revelation and it
seems that there being several narrations that it
may be authentic Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala
says in this ayah after I seek refuge
with Allah from the accursed Satan In the
name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful وَقَالُوا
They will
say or they said
Be Jews or Christians and you
will be guided So this is something that
happened Notice like we said before They didn't
actually say be Jews or Christians What it
actually means is the Jews said Be Jews
and you will be guided And the Christians
said likewise Be Christians and you will be
guided But Allah SWT shortened that And said
Meaning each party
said Be part of us and you will
And Allah SWT tells the Prophet SAW And
the believers by extension What the response should
be Muhammad Ibn Ishaq
Narrates in a chain of narration that
That he
said that Abdullah Ibn Suriya A Jew came
to the Prophet SAW And he said to
him Guidance is nothing but what we are
upon Oh Muhammad So follow us and you
will be guided And the Christians said something
similar So Allah SWT then revealed the following
So this ayah was revealed as a response
To that which they were being told The
Muslims were being told by the Jews and
the Christians Follow us and you will be
guided The response should be this قُلْ بَلْ
What do you immediately notice
about the response?
We might have expected the response to be
Say to them rather Follow me Follow Muhammad
SAW Become Muslims Submitters to Allah SWT And
all of this is correct And you will
be guided The response was
The religion
of Ibrahim حَنِيفًا Inclining towards truth And inclining
And he was not of the Mushrikeen Of
the polytheists Why millet of Ibrahim?
Subhanallah We may even use such a response
today If people have something Or they feel
a certain bias against Islam Tell them what
about Ibrahim?
It reminds us about the other ayah Where
Allah SWT says
Come to a just word between us
O people of the book That we should
not worship anyone but Allah In other words
Let us agree upon this So now he
Rather We
follow the millah of Ibrahim We are upon
the millah of Ibrahim Whom you follow or
claim to follow And attribute yourself to And
take pride in mentioning him And that maybe
you are the descendants of Ibrahim AS You
believe in him?
You believe in his message?
Okay This is what we are upon We
are upon the millah The religion of Ibrahim
AS So don't tell us about Judaism or
Christianity Because Ibrahim AS was neither Ibrahim AS
came way before So if you claim to
be upon his religion We are upon the
millah of Ibrahim AS
So this is something you can even
argue with today Say We are upon millah
of Ibrahim We are calling you to the
millah of Ibrahim AS If they say He
was a Jew or a Christian This is
easily refuted And the Quran has refuted it
Right?
If they ask What is the millah of
Ibrahim?
We can explain What is it that you
claim is the religion of Ibrahim AS?
Well Look at the previous page in the
Quran Look at all of those stories When
we talk about Ibrahim AS And the millah
of Ibrahim AS We are talking about all
of that From the beginning of this section
about Ibrahim Ibrahim the Imam The Imam of
Muwhideen The Imam of Tawheed Who declared the
oneness of Allah SWT Who worshipped Allah alone
Who was an Imam A religious leader Who
left and abandoned all of the false gods
That were worshipped during his time That his
people worshipped That he told them to avoid
And to worship Allah SWT alone This is
Ibrahim AS Ibrahim AS Who obeyed Allah SWT
in all of his commands No matter how
difficult they were Even the sacrifice of his
own son Ibrahim AS Who so loved his
Lord That he lived his life for Allah
SWT Because Allah was most beloved to him
Ibrahim AS Who advised his sons, his children
with Islam Ibrahim AS Who was asked by
Allah SWT Commanded by Allah
Allah told him Aslim Submit And
he said اسلمت لرب العالمين I have submitted
to the Lord of the worlds This is
Ibrahim AS You want more?
Yes, he submitted to Allah And he called
himself a Muslim Ibrahim AS Who built the
Kaaba Ibrahim AS Who was in Mecca And
built the Kaaba with his son Ismail Ibrahim
AS Who called the people to the pilgrimage
to Mecca All of these connections So when
you talk about Ibrahim AS You see that
All of those connections lead to one religion
now And this is Islam This is Ibrahim
This is Billah of Ibrahim So we can
rightly say Rather, the Billah of Ibrahim The
religion of Ibrahim AS Which is what we
are upon today We are the most deserving
and the closest to Ibrahim AS The religion
He was not of the
polytheists Which also seems to be An indication
and an illusion That anyone who is not
on the Have worshipped Others besides Allah SWT
Then the next ayah Allah SWT says
Further response First he tells the
Prophet SAW Say to them Billah Ibrahim Hanifa
Then further clarification about The Billah of Ibrahim
AS قُولُوا Say to them Now the command
is to all of them The Prophet SAW
and all that follow him آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ We
have believed in Allah
This is our religion And the
religion of Ibrahim AS The religion of submission
This is
essentially The position of Muslims Vis-à-vis
Ahlul Kitab The people of the book Because
Al-Imam Al-Bukhari narrates That Abu Huraira
RA Said The people of the book And
namely the Jews Would recite the Torah in
Hebrew And then do tafsir of it in
Arabic They would explain it in Arabic to
The Muslims At the time of the Prophet
SAW So The Prophet SAW Then Told the
Muslims what they should do He said to
them Say We believe in Allah Just like
We believe in
Allah And what has been sent down to
us And what has been sent down to
Ibrahim And Ismail and Ishaq To the end
of that ayah This is the way to
deal with Ahlul Kitab So he said to
them rather He said Do not believe what
they say And do not disbelieve what they
say This is our position With what we
hear from Ahlul Kitab We do not believe
it So the Jews are sitting there Explaining
the Torah in Arabic to the Muslims Don't
believe what they're saying And don't disbelieve it
either Because if you believe it And it
is a falsehood And we know that they
have corrupted what they have Then this is
problematic And if you disbelieve it And it
happens to be true This is also problematic
So he said Do not believe it But
do not disbelieve it And this is mainly
With regards to something we don't know Otherwise
If it is clearly Conforming to what we
have We accept it And if it does
not conform To what we have in Islam
We reject it Right?
So this is the position And then he
This is the position So they
are telling the Jews We believe in Allah
And what has come down to us And
what has come down to Ibrahim and Ismail
In other words We believe in all of
these great prophets and messengers Peace be upon
them all And what Allah SWT has revealed
to them This is our religion This is
our Millah And this is the religion of
Ibrahim AS There is no difference Okay
First of all say to them
We believe in Allah The first and most
important commandment My dear brothers and sisters We
believe in Allah Do they disbelieve in Allah?
Well, is their belief in Allah correct?
Haven't they corrupted their belief or faith in
Allah SWT?
Yes of course There are problems in their
belief in Allah SWT And this is the
first and foremost commandment The first thing is
Believing in Allah SWT As much as religion
focuses on so many excellent things Such as
greatness and nobleness of character And so many
good qualities But the crux of religion is
what?
Is connecting the creation to the creator This
is the most important task of religion Of
what Allah SWT has sent down of books
and messengers To bring people to their Lord
To let them know who their Lord is
And how to worship Him And what He
expects of them This is what is meant
And this is the first thing that religion
establishes Then everything else will fall into place
definitely So the first command Believe in Allah
And do not associate any partners with Him
He is Allah the One
This is number one The simplest Can we
not agree that Allah is One?
We do not agree Do Muslims and Jews
and Christians agree about their belief in Allah?
It's the one thing they don't agree about
They may agree about so many other things
They may agree about don't steal They may
agree about the importance of charity They may
agree about the importance of being Good to
your neighbor And so many other things we
agree about Believe in Allah the One and
Only This is where we disagree
Number
one We believe in Allah The belief in
Allah SWT The correct belief in Allah SWT
Absolving him of any incompleteness Or of partners
or of anything He is the One and
Only Perfect Allah
Notice now This is not a chronological
order Because what he mentions next Is actually
the last ummah And the last testament وَمَا
And what has come down to
us Which is the Quran The last book
We believe
in Allah And what has been sent down
to us Technically it has been sent to
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ But having come down to
him The ones who are addressed Through that
book Are the followers of Muhammad ﷺ From
that time all the way Until the day
So in that sense It has come down
to us Right Because we are the ones
Who are addressed And believe in it And
expected to follow it
And what has been sent down
Now he
goes back to Ibrahim ﷺ So we are
believers in Ibrahim ﷺ And what has come
down to Ibrahim ﷺ In the other ayah
Allah ﷻ tells us That Ibrahim ﷺ was
given what?
The Suhuf, right صُحُفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَمُوسَى وَمَا أُنزِلَ
What has come
down to Ibrahim ﷺ And a lot of
what has come down To the prophets and
messengers May not have been detailed by Allah
ﷻ Not in the Qur'an and not
in the Sunnah وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْنَا إِبْرَاهِيم وَإِسْمَعِيلَ
Do we know what came down to Ismail
ﷺ?
We do not But the ayah is clear
Something came down to Ismail ﷺ
So Ismail and Ishaq,
the two sons of Ibrahim ﷺ Prophets and
messengers They received something What exactly?
We don't know وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبُ Ya'qub as
well, the son of Ishaq Received something And
it seems here وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ That this is
something A book or suhuf Some kind of
a guidance from Allah ﷻ And this is
our belief That the prophets and messengers Were
given books of guidance From Allah ﷻ Sometimes
different How much do's and don'ts And sharia
is in it And how much of it
has to do with General guidance And bringing
people closer to their Lord It depends But
we know that something was Sent down to
them And we believe in what has been
given And sent down to them وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبُ
Who are al-asbaat?
There is some difference of opinion Between scholars
On who the asbaat were And they are
mentioned several times In the Noble Qur'an
Some scholars Say that the asbaat Are the
twelve sons of Ya'qub Also known as
Israel The twelve sons that we mentioned Last
time when we talked about His last advice
And will on his deathbed Namely Prophet Yusuf,
Joseph Alayhi Salam And Benjamin And Levi And
Judah And Ruben And Issachar And all of
the ones that we mentioned Last time Twelve
sons You will find that opinion That they
considered those twelve sons To be the asbaat
And possibly this is also because Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala says in the other ayah
And it is unique in that way Because
in the other verses He just mentions al
-asbaat As he mentions here Without much detailing
In the other ayah he said وَقَطَّعْنَاهُمْ أُثْنَتَيْ
That we have divided them
into Twelve asbaat Nations So some
understood that the asbaat Must be those twelve
The twelve sons of Ya'qub alayhi salam
Or Israel However It is clear That the
sons of Ya'qub alayhi salam Were not
all prophets In fact it seems the only
prophet Out of his sons was Yusuf alayhi
salam And when he mentions al-asbaat Here
in this ayah And he says وَمَا أُنزِلَ
What
has been sent down to al-asbaat So
it seems to indicate That there is prophet
hidden there Because they received something From Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala So how could the
twelve sons of Ya'qub alayhi salam Be
the asbaat So how do we deal with
the twelve then This is why
many scholars said Al-Khalili ibn Ahmad and
others Said that the asbaat of Bani Israel
Are like the tribes of Bani Ismail In
other words The tribes of the Arabs Are
comparable to the asbaat of Bani Israel This
is the way to think about it You
have the Arab tribes And then you have
the asbaat of Bani Israel Specifically twelve Now
from those twelve sons of Israel alayhi salam
Came these nations of people The nations of
Bani Israel Umaman Okay And many
of the prophets Are from those nations And
most of the prophets That Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala sent Were from Bani Israel So
we would say That those thousands of prophets
From Bani Israel Are from al-asbaat Al
-asbaat being those nations The Bani Israel The
nations of Bani Israel That came from those
twelve This is what is known as al
-asbaat Not just the twelve sons But rather
their descendants as well Those are al-asbaat
And many of those asbaat were prophets And
they received revelation from Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala And thus we would understand the ayah
And what has come down to al
-asbaat More specifically The prophets amongst al-asbaat
The prophets amongst al-asbaat And what they
received from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala والله
We believe in all of
that My dear brothers and sisters No one
has taken such a position Except the Muslims
Where they believe in all that Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala sent We reject none والأسباط
Interestingly He separated here
Something came down to Musa and Isa as
well But he mentioned them with something A
little bit different He said وما أوتي موسى
And what has been given to Musa
and Isa Because this is now The crux
of the matter Because who are we arguing
with Who are the believers being told to
say this to To the Jews and the
Say to them We
believe in Allah And what has come down
to us And so on and so forth
Until it comes to
Especially listen up Especially Musa and Isa Because
the Jews are calling you to Musa alayhis
salaam And the Christians are calling you to
We believe in
that as well What has been given to
them Before Before you corrupted it Before you
tampered with it Something that even their objective
scholars Have Or cannot Say otherwise They realize
there was tampering So
We believe In what has been given to
them You don't need to call us To
Musa and Isa We believe in them And
we believe in what they have been given
Before Before it was corrupted
Not only
that Now he mentions it in general And
what the prophets have been given From their
In the
beginning he mentioned them in specific Ibrahim, Ishaq,
Yaqub and Asbaat Because they keep mentioning them
As their forefathers And finally he comes to
Musa and Isa The prophets that they are
calling us to Then he says it in
general We believe in all of the prophets
Of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala And what
they have been given
Listen up We do not differentiate between
any of them In what respect?
In belief In belief We do not differentiate
We believe in all of them There is
no such thing as I believe in this
one Or I reject that one We believe
in all of them Rejection of one Is
a rejection of all Has anyone taken this
position?
Other than the Muslims in the world today
No one Except the Muslims
All of them have refused or
rejected some Even if the Christians say We
believe in all of the prophets They have
rejected the last and final one The seal
of the prophets Prophet Muhammad ﷺ لَا نُفَرِّقُ
We do not distinguish in
belief We believe in them all But Does
that mean that they are all equal?
They are not Right?
They are not As a matter of fact
they are not We have spoken about this
before We talked about the best of the
Allah says in
the Qur'an تِلْكَ الرُّسُلِ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ
Those messengers we made some Better than
others This is a fact But we do
not distinguish لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ In
And we
are submitters to him To Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala This is the Millah of Ibrahim
This is the religion of Islam Can anyone
compete?
Can anyone claim anything similar?
No This is a comprehensive ayah And you
will see it again With slightly different wording
Certain nuances Maybe we will have a chance
then To discuss and try to see Why
it is a little bit different Very important
ayah For da'wa For clarifying our stance
And it seems Wallahu a'lam This is
why the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam Would
That he would recite it
in the sunnah of Fajr Along with the
ayah of Surah Ali Imran
This is Wallahu a'lam
And may Allah's peace and blessings be upon
our Prophet Muhammad Can I ask a question?
Go ahead The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon
him The Prophets that
he was born What is the secret?
Why do they have a huge birth rate
among the Jews?
You mean why?
Okay, answer
in English or in Arabic?
The brother is asking why so many Prophets
coming to Bani Israel and coming from Bani
Israel.
Bani Israel.
We said before that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala chose Bani Israel and chose them as
the best of their time, at their time.
And indeed there were many who were true
submitters to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and
truly obedient to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sent many
Prophets and Messengers from them.
So there were many excellent people from Bani
Israel.
But at the same time, there were many
that were disobedient.
And as we can see, the Bani Israel
are huge nations.
So he talks about these twelve asbaat, nations,
coming from these twelve asbaat, right?
Over long periods of time.
So when we talk about Bani Israel, you're
talking about Prophets and Messengers going back all
the way to the time of Yaqub alayhis
salaam, all the way down to Isa alayhis
salaam.
It's a huge span of time, right?
So this is number one.
This is a huge span of time where
a lot of Prophets and Messengers were sent.
Allah told us that in the Qur'an,
Musa alayhis salaam reminded Bani Israel, Remember the
favor of Allah upon you, that He has
made amongst you Prophets.
And He made amongst you Kings.
These are the blessings of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala upon you.
So number two, this is the blessing of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that He made
amongst them so many Prophets.
At the same time, because so many were
disobedient, and we saw what happened with Musa
alayhis salaam, how difficult they were with Musa
alayhis salaam, the difficulties that he faced, so
many of them reached a level of disobedience
that was also unprecedented.
So Allah sent so many Prophets and Messengers
to guide them back to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
And they killed so many Prophets and Messengers,
peace be upon them all.
So again, Allah sent Prophets and Messengers to
them.
So it's kind of a complicated answer, because
why are there so many?
There are different reasons and aspects for it.
It's not just one reason.
Wallahu a'lam.
The religion of Allah is one.
All of these Prophets and Messengers are calling
people to worship Allah alone.
That's it.
What you see today is all unfortunately an
alteration of and corruption of the original message.
All of these Prophets and Messengers of Bani
Israel are calling to the worship of Allah
alone.
Whether the Prophet or Messenger spoke Hebrew or
Aramaic or some other language we never heard
of, they were calling to the worship of
Allah alone.
They were calling to Islam in general.
So it's just about the fact that when
you talk about Bani Israel, again it spans
a very long period of time.
You're going back almost to the time of
Ibrahim.
Ya'ni Ya'qub is the grandson of
Ibrahim.
Right?
We're talking about thousands and thousands of years.
And then all the way to the time
of Isa a.s. Thousands of years.
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala sent thousands
of Prophets and Messengers from them.
Wallahu ta'ala a'lam.
Anything else?
