As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
Bismillah wa alhamdulillah.
Hamdan kafeeran tayyiban mubarakan fi.
Hamdan yaliq bi jalali wajihihi wa bi adheemah
sultani.
Wa sallallahu ala khairi khalqihi Muhammadin as-sadiq
al ameen.
Al mab'uthi rahmatan lil'alamin.
Wa ala alihi wa as'habihi We
praise and glorify Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and we send the best peace and blessings
on our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his
noble family and his companions.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala open our
hearts to his remembrance, to his words, to
facilitate our understanding of the Qur'an as
he subhanahu wa ta'ala intended it for
us and not our own understanding based on
our own nafus, our own biases and inclinations.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala show us
truth as the truth and falsehood as falsehood.
Help us to follow the truth as best
as we can and to stay away from
falsehood.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala open our
hearts to accepting, loving and lovingly surrendering to
his will as expressed in his words the
Qur'an.
So at the request of some of you
we are going to be starting surah number
18 which is surah Al-Kahf which is
only 110 ayats and this will probably go
for five or six sessions which means more
than two months which means if you memorize
only two ayahs a day when we conclude
this surah all of you here would have
memorized surah Al-Kahf and understood surah Al
-Kahf and then would be able to recite
it every Friday from memory and focus in
your salah.
Does everybody have this niya?
This is my desire for all of you
and myself just two ayahs every day inshallah
make a firm niya and make the niya
make the effort 20 minutes every day that's
all it is two ayahs repeating repeating and
understand and then we do the work and
then we say ya Allah help me memorize
this and internalize this.
So everybody is going to do this not
nobody is exempt from this.
Brother Majid will memorize, Yusuf will memorize, Dr.
Mateen will memorize.
Eldest to the youngest will all memorize this
they have easier you know because easy for
the youngsters.
Has anybody here already memorized it all of
it?
Mashallah.
So anyone who memorizes it fully inshallah we
will pull in some gifts for them new
memorization and the gifts is not money it
could be a book it could be a
tafseer of surah Al-Kahf there are whole
volumes written only on surah Al-Kahf and
of course all of that plus just remember
it's for so the surah takes its name
it's a Meccan surah as you know it
was revealed when the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam was in Mecca and most of the
Mufassirun have said that it's from the second
half of the Meccan period probably somewhere six
to eight years of Nabuwwah which is a
few years before the Hijrah and surah Al
-Kahf is exactly the middle of the Quran
okay so when you are reciting you go
to the middle open and you'll open a
surah Al-Kahf and some of the scholars
have said that the exact words who've done
a word count that is the middle word
of the Quran the interesting thing is the
Quran starts with what Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen the
middle of the Quran starts with Alhamdulillah Ladi
Anzala so that's an interesting thing now there
is something we've talked about Asbabul Nuzul means
is there some history as to what occasion
this was revealed on and there is a
narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas the greatest
Mufassir of the Quran the cousin of the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam who was blessed
with a special dua from Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam put his noble hand on his
chest and said ya Allah give him the
understanding of the Quran so there's no one
who explained the Quran better than Abdullah Ibn
Abbas so this narration is attributed to him
as you know the scenario is Makkah there
is hostility the Quraish are trying to prove
the Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is not
a true messenger he is an imposter he
is a shahid he is Allah every kind
of accusation they made so then some of
the leaders said look in Yathrib Yathrib is
what Medina became the people of the book
live the people the Jews live and they
because of the trade routes they knew that
these people were of knowledge let us send
a delegation to Makkah to Yathrib talk to
the Jewish rabbis and ask them that there
is a man here who claims to be
a messenger of God how can we prove
him one way or the other whether he
is true or not so they sent two
of the leaders another Ibn Al-Harith and
Uqba Ibn Abi Mu'ayt two leaders were
sent to Yathrib they met with the rabbis
and they said to him to them that
we have a man who was from us
we knew him for 40 years now suddenly
he has started saying that he gets revelation
from above and we don't believe him and
you are people of the Torah and you
must have you know some knowledge give us
an idea how we can know if he
is imposter or if he is real so
the rabbi said they thought they said ask
him three questions ask him what is the
story about the young people who ran away
from them ask him who is the one
that Allah gave power that he traveled from
the east to the west and the third
question ask him what is the Ruh and
then they told him the third is a
trick question they said nobody knows what the
Ruh is so if he gives you a
long explanation he's an imposter but ask these
three questions so the first one ask them
about the young men from the ancient times
what was their story that was very strange
number two the man who traveled from east
to west reached both ends of the earth
that we know east and west what is
his story and ask him about the Ruh
and if he answers these correctly then follow
and if he doesn't then you can do
what you want with him so they came
back met Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and
they asked him these three questions at that
time Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to
regularly get Jibreel alayhis salaam coming to visit
and he was expecting that he would come
next day so Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
said come back tomorrow I'll give you the
answers Jibreel alayhis salaam did not show up
next day Jibreel alayhis salaam did not show
up now Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is
getting anxious the narration said that for 15
days no Wahi came and the Meccans were
starting to rejoice then he doesn't know the
answer then after 15 days Jibreel alayhis salaam
came with portions of Surah Kahf the beginning
was the story of the Ashab ul Kahf
the youth of the cave and the end
is the story of Dhul Qarnayn the one
who traveled and a portion of Surah Bani
Israel which addresses the question of the Ruh
so what the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
had said to them I will inform you
tomorrow about your questions this is what he
had said so he did not say Inshallah
and this will come as part of that
that even Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is
being told yes you are my messenger but
what does this also prove the importance of
Inshallah but we'll come to that when we
come to that but what does it prove
for people who doubt that the Quran is
the divine revelation because they were saying he
invented it if he was inventing he could
have given them the answer next day but
himself he was put in such a difficult
position now people are starting to talk and
there's nothing that's only Allah subhana when he
decides so this is a proof one of
the proofs indirect that the Quran is from
Allah subhana because he could have given any
answer part of
that early revelation also contain something to Rasulullah
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he was very
anxious that these people should should accept and
he was anxious that if I can't convince
them they will not accept so Allah subhana
part of those early ayat the the sixth
ayah he says Oh Prophet you will you
kill yourself out of stress and concern for
them grief over them if they do not
believe in this message I mean would you
be so sad that and so sorrowful that
you would actually destroy yourself over them so
that was one of the things so we'll
deal with the question of the ruh first
because then we can put that aside so
Allah subhana revealed part of surah Bani Israel
which has the ayah وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ and
they ask you about the ruh قُلِ الرُّوحِ
مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي tell them that the ruh
is an affair or a command of my
Lord وَمَا أُوتِيْتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا and
in this regard you have not been given
any knowledge except a little so there wasn't
a long and Allah subhana left it and
there is no other mention about the ruh
in description or anything in the Quran to
describe what the ruh is so that answered
that question that they said you know he'll
make something about Allah subhana says tell them
this is an affair a command of my
Lord and you know nothing more whenever Allah
subhana says you have not been given the
knowledge then we say the knowledge is with
Allah like when we say Allahu alam when
we say that what does it mean I
am professing my ignorance that only Allah knows
I am not going to venture you know
with ideas and opinion could be this it
could humility I there is no shame in
saying I do not know and the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was told about many
things tell them the knowledge of this is
only with Allah so one of the lessons
of that is we do not have to
answer every question that's asked and try and
figure something out if there is a clear
answer and in this surah there are multiple
ayats that talk about only saying about Allah
only is coming with solid knowledge otherwise keeping
quiet that you do not say things which
are not true you don't say things that
you don't know about you don't put extensions
on the Quran what I mean by extension
that's my own version extension means you read
one portion and then you extrapolate you get
for example the most common Allah subhana says
that Maryam we breathed our Ruh into Maryam
and she had a son there was no
father okay there's no father now the extension
of that is since there is no father
there should always be a father by extension
Allah is the father he is the son
of God that's an extension just that's the
example so when you see something do not
you know it must mean this if knowledge
has not been given Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam has not explained it that's it we
said the knowledge Allahu alam so this keeps
us safe because it's going to be conjecture
even Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said even
if it's correct it's a sin and if
it's wrong of course it's a it's a
major crime now so that's how these this
is the Asbabul Nuzul or the occasion of
revelation now what are the special virtues the
Fadail of Surah Al-Kahf the Prophet sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam said and which day do
are we strong I mean of course you
can recite it every day but which day
it's recommended Friday and what does Friday come
consist of Thursday evening after Maghrib that's called
Friday night and all day Friday till Sunday
Maghrib of Thursday till Maghrib of Friday this
is your time there are some narrations whoever
recites it on the day of Friday there
are some narrations on the night of Friday
many of our scholars have preferred that we
recited on the night because sometimes you get
busy in the day and you might miss
it Thursday night after sunset but anytime if
you can so that's good so the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said whoever recites or
reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday it will
be a light that shines from him from
one Friday to the next between the two
Fridays what is meant by this light is
not explained there is a special Noor special
light from one Friday to the other whenever
Allah talks about Noor there are many explanations
generally that means that there is special Noor
in general shows you what the path that
you will have special guidance you will have
special could there be a special Anwar coming
out of people that some people who have
farasa see maybe we don't know but that's
what the Hadith says that there will be
a special light from one Friday to the
next or between two Fridays there is another
narration from Abu Sayyid Al-Khudri who said
that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said
whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on the night
of Jummah in this the night is specified
will have a light that will stretch between
him and the Kaaba again these are things
of the Ghayb we don't see those lights
because we are reciting every Friday we are
not seeing any light around us that's what
it says we believe in it there's another
narration which says whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf
on Friday on the day of judgment there
will be a light from his feet going
up into the heavens from the earth into
the heavens and in this Hadith it then
goes on to say that the smaller sins
the sins of the person that are committed
from one Friday to the next will be
forgiven so now besides the light there is
forgiveness of sins and in another Hadith the
same says the light will shine from him
from beneath his feet to the clouds in
the sky especially on the day of resurrection
he will be forgiven and all of that
so again it's talking about some special phenomena
of the Ghayb that Allah SWT has attributed
to this then there is this well known
Hadith that many of you know the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said if anyone memorizes
the first ten ayah of Surah Al-Kahf
he will be protected from Ad-Dajjal and
for those who don't know Ad-Dajjal the
anti Christ that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam said as you know the dunya our
life is a test a trial and those
ayats will also come in the beginning Allah
SWT says what he's created everything on this
earth whatever he has created is to test
you who is the best in your deeds
so it's all a test and trial in
the end and the holes there are four
stories which we're going to talk about each
one is a trial is a test and
in the end there is mention about Ya
'juj Ma'juj which is another great trial
and after all of these trials whether there
is physical trials of sickness of loss psychological
trials spiritual trials social problems between people and
you know all trials fitna this is what
the life is the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam said the greatest trial is Ad-Dajjal
so this surah has the power the first
10 are specified that whoever memorizes these that's
why we are memorizing the whole surah will
have protection against Dajjal there is another narration
which also says which is sort of a
little weaker weak this this is all authenticated
it says whoever also recite memorizes or recites
the last 10 ayahs so we've got them
both covered because we are going to memorize
the whole surah the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
sallam one day the companions looked very disturbed
so he came he said what's the matter
they look very scared what had happened Ya
Rasulullah we were talking about Dajjal and we
got so carried away for us it seemed
that the tree out there the Dajjal is
here so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
gave the whole description of Dajjal what he's
going to be like what he's going to
do Dajjal is someone that Allah will give
very special powers to and that will be
the biggest test of Iman what kind of
special powers Allah will give the powers that
only Allah manifests such as controlling the risk
controlling the rain controlling where what grows what
doesn't grow giving you food if you believe
in me stopping water from you if you
if you don't believe in me providing for
people putting people to death bringing them back
to life only things that these kinds of
things this creation of Allah will do so
he gave us all of that all of
therefore it's going to be majority of people
who think yes and he will say I
am God worship me because nobody else can
do this but we already told about it
so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam reassured
them he said if he comes Dajjal comes
while I am with you then I am
your protection against him but if he comes
after I am gone then you're all on
your own and then at the end of
that he said and if you live to
that time okay if you live to that
time and you encounter the Dajjal recite the
first ten ayahs of surah kahf and that
will be your protection from this trial in
other words Allah because of that will protect
you will help you recognize because the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said in the hadith
authentic hadith that the believer when he looks
at Dajjal will see with a special eye
kahfara written on his forehead kahfir and will
know now so there is something very special
about these ten ayahs that we will go
over because there is a lot that's encompassed
in this and interestingly it only covers the
first two ayahs of the whole story of
kahf it's not the whole story of kahf
and what it helps us develop is a
strong connection because of what Allah says about
the Quran that we're going to start with
and it gives us strength and we're going
to talk about that in a little moment
another hadith is narrated by a companion by
the name of Al-Bara Ibn Azid who
says that one of the companions of Rasul
Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at night was
reciting surah kahf in his modest house and
his horse was tied there and he was
praying at night tahajjud and he was reciting
surah kahf and the horse became very disturbed
making lot unusual.
So obviously somehow he looked up and he
saw all these lights in the sky this
companion and then when he looked up they
seem to disappear and then he continued recitation
again the horse and again the lights came.
So next day he came to the Prophet
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and narrated that they
seemed like a cloud that came of lights.
Rasul Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said that
that was Sakina descending on your recitation in
the Mufassarun Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani the great
narrator of hadith explained that he said that
means there were angels who were descending to
listen to the Quran so that this surah
has special blessings where the angels descend they
come as we know there are many hadiths
that when people gather in one of the
houses of Allah for remembrance of the Sakina
descends and angels descend so they just for
one person they were descending because of this
surah.
