The important thing, of course, we
all know the hadith of Prophet Muhammad concerning
the importance of niyyah, of intention, right?
We know the hadith.
You're looking blank.
You don't know?
إِنَّمَ لَا مَعْلِكُ بِالنَّيْتِ Okay.
The hadith is narrated by Umar ibn al
-Khattab.
And it is the first hadith in Bukhari.
It's the first hadith in Surah al-Sarh
of Prophet Muhammad.
It's the second hadith in Muslim.
Sayyid Muslim.
Umar ibn al-Khattab said that Prophet Muhammad
said that the reward of the deed is
based on the intention.
إِنَّمَ لَا مَعْلُكُ بِالنَّيْتِ The reward of deeds
is based on their intentions.
And then he clarified and he said that
the one who migrates for the sake of
meaning make hijrah for the sake of Allah
and his Rasul he has migrated for the
sake of Allah and his Rasul meaning that
he will get the reward of migration for
the sake of Allah and his Rasul.
He said, however, if a person migrates for
business or some other affair or to marry
a woman then he will get the reward
of that which he migrated for.
Meaning that the two are not the same.
Migration, Hijrat, إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ is not the
same as Hijrat for any other reason.
So, Hijrat, إِلَى اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ is something which
is Ibadah, which is completely wipes out all
the sins and so on and so forth.
Hijrat or migrating for some other reason our
Rasul is not saying it is haram.
It can be done.
Can I go from this country to that
country to get a job or to start
a business or any other good thing?
Yes, you can do that.
Can I go to another country to marry
somebody?
Of course, you can do that.
But is that Ibadah?
No.
Is that something equal to migrating for the
sake of Allah and His Rasul?
No.
So, the Hadith tells us that we know
the Hadith.
So, we know that the Niyah is very
important.
So, first, I reminded to myself anyways, Niyat
is something which is not static.
Right?
It's not to say that I started with
the Niyah and then this Niyah will remain
with me forever for that particular action.
No.
Niyat goes up and down.
Niyat can be hijacked by Shaitan and it
is hijacked by Shaitan many times.
So, Niyah is to be frequently checked and
corrected as required.
So, for example, to understand that, it's like
carrying your wallet or carrying a bunch of
money in your pocket and you are in
a big fair or you are in a
big, you know, whatever, festival or something, right?
So, or you are in a very busy
railway station, for example.
So, in that situation, what will you do?
You will, your consciousness will be, my money
should be safe.
Nobody should pick my pocket.
So, you will, you know, either keep your
hand on your wallet or you put it
in a place where nobody can steal it.
I remember I used to travel at one
point in the Bombay local trains, you know.
If you don't know what a Bombay local
train is, then you haven't lived life.
So, go on YouTube and see, put it
there, Mumbai local trains or Bombay local trains.
You will see what it means, what I
am talking about.
Enormous coming, amazing crowds.
And one of the things that the local
train is known for is the number of
pickpockets.
So, to the extent, there was a story,
I don't know if it is true, but
it can be true.
This man, he put out a newspaper, advertisement
in the newspaper.
And he said that if any pickpocket can
pick my pocket, if anyone can, then I
will give him this reward of so many
thousand rupees.
And he put his wallet in his pocket
and his wallet was empty.
He didn't put any money in it.
So, he went and, you know, at the
end of the journey, when he got home,
he checked his wallet, wallet was in his
pocket, not picked, ah, fantastic, nobody would pick
my pocket.
Then he took out his wallet.
In the wallet was a note and the
note said, we took your wallet and we
put it back.
So, that is how, that is how good
they are.
So, when I used to travel, and I
was in school at that time, when I
used to travel, I would take my money,
no wallet, just the cash, and stick it
in my socks.
Right?
You can't pick the sock.
So, in the sock, inside the socks, because
if I lose my money, and I was
a student, I was very poor, I didn't
know what to do, I didn't know how
to lose my money.
So, pickpocket.
So, same thing happened with Nia.
Same thing happened.
Now, in terms of Nia, also what happens
is, your appearance, for example, if you look
like, I don't know, may Allah bless you,
and make this full of, most well-dressed,
you know, a stupid person, very nice, very
good, very good to take care of your
appearance, and to dress well, and all of
that.
Then, if you look rich, if you look
wealthy, the thieves will be after you first.
Here's some other guy, he looks like a
homeless guy, some tramp, he might be a
millionaire, but you know, who knows, look at
him, look at his clothes.
But somebody who else, who may not be
wealthy, he's just, you know, well turned out.
So, same thing happens with the shaitan.
So, when we are doing something good, the
attacks of shaitan will be much more.
Shaitan is not attacking the guy in the,
you know, in the nightclub, right?
The guy in the nightclub is where shaitan
wants him to be.
So, what is there to attack?
Job is over, right?
He's doing his own job.
So, he doesn't have to do anything.
But, somebody who is doing something good, somebody
who is going to the masjid, somebody who
is going to, you know, listen to something
useful, beneficial, deen, someone who is trying to
practice his deen, someone who is trying to
make a change in his life, right?
So, maybe I did something wrong in my
life.
All of us do.
But somewhere, Alhamdulillah, Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la gives me taufiq, I say no,
no, this, whatever I've been doing till now,
these things are not good.
I'm not going to do that.
I want to change my life.
Believe me, the first one to wake up
will be shaitan.
And shaitan will attack.
So, similarly, just like we keep track of
our money in a crowded place, we need
to keep track of our niya.
So, we begin the job with a good
intention, and then the intention gets deviated.
Somebody asked this question to Sheikh al-Husayni
r.a. He said, I recite Qur'an
well, I have a good recitation.
So, people use push me forward.
They ask me to lead salah.
So, he said, now, when I'm leading salah,
I made the intention in my mind that
I will, say, recite 20 ayats.
But, when I'm reciting, when I'm on the
third ayat or a fourth ayat, I get
a thought to say, you are doing this
recitation because you want the people to appreciate
that.
So, he said, I immediately shorten my intention.
So, I maybe recite another two ayats and
I stop.
I don't recite the full 20 or whatever
I had decided.
But, this bothers me.
So, if that happens, when I get this
doubt, what must I do?
Sheikh al-Husayni r.a. He said something
very beautiful.
He said, that first and foremost, he said,
the fact that you are having this doubt
is a good sign, which means that your
niyyah is good and you are conscious of
the, you are a muttaqi person, inshallah.
So, that's a good sign.
The second thing is, he said, this doubt
is from shaytan.
Right?
Even though a doubt is there, it's a
good thing to have such doubts.
But, he said, the doubt itself is from
shaytan.
Because, the reason is, because of your recitation,
people are praying behind you.
They are connecting with Allah s.w.t.
They have khushu in their salah.
Shaytan wants to stop that.
So, he puts a doubt in your mind
to say, you are doing this for real.
So, when you stop your recitation, it's a
loss for everyone.
So, he said, do two things.
First of all, he said, immediately make istighfar.
Because the doubt itself should be, even though
it may be from shaytan or is from
shaytan, it should be respected because it concerns
me.
So, I make immediately istighfar.
You don't have to say it loudly in
your heart.
Make istighfar.
He said, then elongate your recitation.
You intended to recite 20 ayahs, now recite
25.
Right?
Beat shaytan.
Inna shaytana aduhum fattakhizuhu aduwa.
Allah says, shaytan is your enemy, so become
his enemy.
Remember, Allah is not saying, ignore him, don't
listen to him, run away from him.
No, Allah says, enemy.
Who is the enemy?
Enemy is someone who tries to harm.
Enemy is someone who will attack.
Right?
So, Allah is saying, shaytan is attacking you,
attack him back.
He is trying to harm you, harm him
back.
Not just passively saying, no, no, I am
ignoring you.
No, no, ignoring you.
Fight him.
Fight the shaytan.
How do you fight the shaytan?
By first of all, a'udhu billahi bina
shaytanir rajim.
Diyas kalwa subhanahu wa ta'ala for his
protection.
Second thing is, whatever shaytan is trying to
stop you from doing, do that.
Whatever shaytan is trying to tell you to
do, don't do that.
Do the opposite.
Whatever is, you know, the wasa, the wasfasa,
which is coming, the whispering, the temptation of
shaytan, consciously do the opposite.
That's very, very important.
Consciously do the opposite.
Right?
For example, one of the simple, common thing
which happens, especially this weather, we know that
it is always a good thing to be
always in a state of a'udhu, 24
-7.
So, every time your'udhu wakes, immediately make
'udhu.
You go to the bathroom, immediately make'udhu
and then come out.
Right?
So, you don't necessarily make'udhu only for
salah.
Be in a state of'udhu because Abhishekhara
said Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala protects the
person, forgives his sins.
It's something which is good for your risk
and so on and so on.
So, lots of benefits.
'Udhu itself is an ibadah.
So, when you are making'udhu, you are
getting benefit of that because it's an ibadah.
But, we live in a country which is
cold.
You may not always have hot water to
make'udhu and so on.
So, there is this temptation.
It's okay.
I just finished praying Salat-u-Zohar.
There's still time for Salat-u-Nasr.
My'udhu just went.
So, why do I need to make'udhu
now?
Let me make'udhu at Asr time.
No.
Consciously make'udhu right then.
Because this is coming from Shaitan.
Shaitan is saying be without'udhu.
Doesn't matter.
It's okay.
No, it's not okay.
Must do it.
Right?
So, don't fall into the fick of should
I do, is it further, or nothing.
Do it because Shaitan is telling you not
to do it.
Yeah?
That is a very, very important thing to
remember because Allah says become his enemy.
So, this is the issue of Niyah.
So, therefore, constantly and continuously protect your Niyah.
Right?
Now, second point of Niyah is one is
the intention to do something.
And, as we said, the reward depends on
the intentions.
Intentions are important.
But, you know and I know, if you
simply intend to do something and then you
do not take any action, the intention won't
happen.
I intend to do well in my exams.
Aren't they very nice?
And then you say, so, how many hours
are you studying?
I start studying.
I am busy.
I have got so many friends.
I have got so many social circles.
I have got to go here, this party,
that party.
So, what will you say?
You say, my brother, his intention is good.
But, it is not going to happen.
Believe me.
Because, you are doing nothing to make the
intention come true.
So, people sometimes say, you know, people have
to wake up.
You have to wake up and you have
to get out of bed.
Two different things.
You are not sleeping.
You are awake.
But, you are still in bed.
Nothing will happen.
You may as well go back to sleep.
So, if you want action, if you want
results, it is not only enough to have
a good intention.
It is not only enough to wake up.
It is also equally important, if not more,
to get out of bed and start working.
Do make the effort.
Whatever is necessary.
Right?
So, very important to keep that in mind,
to say, what is my intention?
And then, work forward from that and say,
therefore, to make this intention come true, what
effort do I need to make?
That is very important.
So, what effort do I need to make?
So, in terms of effort, what are the
actions?
Again, I am a great believer in systems
and in structures.
And I found that this is a very,
very important element in success, which is how
structured is your life.
The fastest way to get something done is
to have a structure.
So, Inshallah.
As the Prophet said, there is no one
without a structure.
