Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen Wa Salatu
wa Salamu ala Sharafil Anbiya wal Munsalin Muhammadur
Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa sahbihil
salam Tasliman kathiran kathiran My brothers and sisters,
if there is, if you ask me to
name the one single biggest, most critical, most
dangerous crisis that is facing us today, I
would say it is the crisis of parenting.
The crisis of parenting.
And the reason for that is because we
have tried to, and for a lot of
us, we have managed to factor Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala out of the equation.
And I want to therefore begin with this
statement.
Factor Allah into the equation because he is
in it anyway.
Factor Allah into the equation because he is
in it anyway.
By equation I mean every decision in life.
Factor Allah into that equation.
Meaning, be concerned about my decision, my action,
my speech, my, you know, where I spend
my time and so on.
Does it please Allah or not?
Is it something which is likely to displease
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala or not?
This is something which must be top of
the mind for us which must be in
every single thing we say or do and
this is the thing which is hugely missing.
Now, adults, parents, people of, you know, my
generation, even younger ones who have children, they
tend to place all the blame on the
children.
They say, this is what is wrong with
the young generation, this is what is wrong
with the youth.
I say the problem begins with you.
It's not what is wrong with you, it's
what's wrong with you.
Because that younger generation did not come from
Jannah.
It didn't come from heaven.
You raised them.
So, if there is a problem with them
and believe me, they have got serious problems,
those problems were either created by you as
parents or you failed to deal with them
at a time when they could be dealt
with.
So, let's see how do we connect our
children to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because
first things must come first.
I say to myself and remind myself and
you that Islam is the name of a
relationship.
It's not a theology, it's not a philosophy,
it is a relationship.
When we say, ashadu an la ilaha illa
Allah, you say, I bear witness that there
is no one worthy of worship except Allah.
And when I say that, when I say
I bear witness, it means that therefore I
worship Allah.
I do not worship anybody else.
When I say I bear witness that Muhammad
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam is the messenger of
Allah, the last and final of them, after
whom there is none other, when I say
ashadu an la Muhammad Rasulallah, it means, I
say I bear witness, meaning, I say and
I bear witness and I prove and I
bear witness that I follow Muhammad sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam only and not anybody else.
Meaning that if there is a way that
Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam did something or
said something or or behaved in a certain
way and somebody else who behaves in a
way which is contrary to that, then I
will not follow that contrary way.
I will follow the way of Muhammad sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam.
So, the shahada, when we take the shahada,
this is an act of accepting that relationship.
Islam is the name of a relationship.
The shahada is the action of accepting that
relationship and we say, yes, I am in
this relationship.
And being a Muslim and Islam is to
fulfil the rights of that relationship.
Because every relationship has rights.
Every relationship has rights and every relationship grants
us certain privileges.
We have those privileges as long as we
continue to fulfil those rights.
Right?
If you stop fulfilling the rights, then the
privileges are taken away from us.
And this is what has happened to us.
Our privilege was that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala would listen to us.
Our dua was accepted.
Today our dua is not accepted because we
have removed the responsibility of fulfilling the right.
The dua of the person who is connected
is fulfilled.
When you break the connection, dua is not
fulfilled.
Acceptance of dua is a privilege, fulfilling the
right of Allah to make Allah number one
in our lives.
This is the right which must be fulfilled.
Now, this is important, this relationship with Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala and with his Rasul
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam is because this is
the only relationship that transcends this life.
All our relationships end with death.
Some end before death, but with death everything
ends.
Our relationship of parent and child, our relationship
of a spouse, our relationship as employer, employee,
citizen, ruler, what not.
Every single relationship ends with death except our
relationship with Allah.
And that is why this is the first
question in the grave, man rabbukh?
They are not asking you, ma rabbul alameen?
They don't say, who is the Rabb of
the heavens and the earth?
They say, who is your Rabb?
It's a question which is focused at the
relationship.
Who is your Rabb?
The malaika know who Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala is.
They don't have to ask you for that.
They are asking you, who is your Rabb?
Man rabbuka?
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentioned this relationship
and He said, wal ladheena aamanu ashadduhubbalillah.
The nature of the relationship Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala mentioned and He said, this is
a relationship of love.
Not just love, ashadduhub, the superlative form of
shadir, the most sincere love, love with great
intensity.
Allah said, but the true believers, the mumineen,
they love Allah more than anyone and anything
else.
Question I have to ask myself is, do
I love Allah?
And if the answer is yes, then there
has to be evidence.
What is the evidence that I love Allah?
If the answer is no, then it's big
babal, big problem.
What am I going to do to change
that?
There are two benefits of loving Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
One is a sense of awareness of being
in the presence of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala which comforts the heart.
How can anything harm me when my Rabb
is with me?
He said, fa'inama kuntum, fasamma wajhullah.
He said, wherever you look, you will see
the wajh of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
the face of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
You will see the signs of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
He said, wa huwa ma'akum aynama kuntum.
He is with you wherever you might be.
And this sense of awareness of the ma
'iyyat of Allah, of the presence of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala in our lives, this
is a huge, huge, huge comfort.
It takes away all stress.
It takes away all kinds of tension.
It takes away all depression.
It takes away all anxiety.
Because my Rabb is with me.
My Allah is with me, so who can
harm me?
My Allah is with me, so what else
do I need?
My Allah is with me, so how can
I lack for anything?
My Allah is with me, so how can
anything threaten me?
My Allah is with me.
Second big benefit is, it is a shield
against sinning.
A shield against disobeying Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
Because if my Rabb is with me and
I am aware of that, how can I
lie, how can I cheat, how can I
do anything which incurs the displeasure of Allah?
Right?
Allah is always with us, but we don't
have that awareness, we don't have that sense
of that.
But when a person loves Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, when the person is mentally and
in his heart and spiritually engaged with Allah,
in dhikr, in remembering Allah, in seeing his
signs, in saying subhanAllah, such a person will
have great difficulty committing a sin and that's
a good difficulty to have.
This is the essence of Islam.
The essence of Islam is to be aware
of this relationship between the Abd and the
Rabb and to fulfil the rights of that
relationship.
So, how can we know Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala?
In two ways.
One, by the way in which Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala introduced Himself.
Because nobody can introduce Allah as He introduced
Himself.
And number two, by reflecting with gratitude, with
shukr, on Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's creation
which surrounds us and we are also His
creation and by reflecting on His blessings on
us.
For each of us, these blessings are different.
It is very important to remind ourselves of
this.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, وَإِن تَعُدُّوا
Allah said, if you
try to count the blessings of Allah, you
will not be able to count.
So, let us at least make an attempt.
At least make an attempt to count the
blessings of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
I remind myself and you to make this
self-test of faith.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said in Suratul
Five things Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala described.
He said the true believers are only those
whose hearts shiver and tremble with the glory
and majesty and awe of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala whenever Allah is remembered, whenever Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala is mentioned.
And whose faith increases with His mention, with
His revelations, when the ayat of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala are recited to them, when
they see the signs of Allah in the
creation, the faith of these believers whose hearts
are responsive to Allah, the faith increases.
And they have tawakkul on Allah.
They have complete and total reliance on Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And they are those who establish the salah.
And who
donate and who spend from what we have
provided them.
Five qualities, self-test for us, do I
have iman or I don't have iman.
Now, I will recite for you some ayat
where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala introduced Himself.
You know all of these ayat, so I
will not translate them for you.
Just focus on your heart and see if
anything is happening to your heart or not
as you listen to the recitation.
Believe me, it has nothing to do with
the recitation.
It has nothing to do with the hand.
It has nothing to do with the sound
of the voice.
It has everything to do with the state
of our hearts.
Right?
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, لَهُمَا
The first
was Ayatul Kursi as you know the second
one were the last ayat of Suratul Hashr
and the third one is Suratul Ikhlas Please
look up the meanings The key thing is
what happened to my heart when I was
listening to this My brothers and sisters It
is critical when you are talking about connecting
your children to the Quran It is critical
to understand one very important thing And that
is to connect your children to the Quran
You have to be connected to the Quran
To connect your children to Allah You have
to be connected to Allah It doesn't work
otherwise We can only give what we have
If I have no connection I cannot give
it to you I can only give you
the connection If I have a connection So
it is the whole point is to focus
on parents Rasulullah s.a.w. did not
run a makhtam He did not run a
primary school He did not run a creche
He did not run a day care center
Parenting is a contact sport Parenting is not
a remote control exercise You cannot outsource parenting
to somebody else To the masjid, to the
imam To the maulvi sahib, to the school
To the whatever Parenting has to be done
by parents That is the reason why parents
have this position in Islam Not because biologically
You are the means by which the children
were born But because of what you do
To connect them to Allah s.w.t
Their tarbiyah And that tarbiyah cannot happen By
people who don't have tarbiyah themselves So taskiyatun
nafs Must begin with myself I have to
do my own taskiyat I have to purify
myself Before I purify anybody else So I
remind myself and you Please focus on yourself
What is the state of your heart When
you listen to the Quran Does anything happen
to your heart?
If it doesn't happen, there is a big
problem There is a sickness The heart has
hardened The heart has become deaf to the
kalam of Allah s.w.t What's the
plan to change that?
Allah s.w.t mentioned Himself And He
said Allah
s.w.t said in surat al Imran
Indeed in the creation of the heavens and
the earth There are signs And in the
alteration Of the day and the night There
are signs For people of reason People of
intelligence And then Allah described them He said
who are they?
Two criteria Which are joined They are those
who remember Allah s.w.t Standing, sitting
and lying down And reflect on the creation
Of the heavens and the earth And they
make dua Two
criteria Of intelligent people Please apply it Does
it apply to you?
Does it apply to me?
Zikr of Allah Standing, sitting and lying down
What does it mean?
It means Do we remember Allah s.w
.t In every aspect of our lives?
Also by definition Therefore If I am remembering
Allah s.w.t Standing, sitting and lying
down Then I cannot be committing sins I
cannot be earning and eating haram Standing, sitting
and lying down I cannot be disobeying Allah
s.w.t When I am in the
zikr of Allah s.w.t So it's
not just a matter of Walking around with
the tasbih It's a matter of having Allah
s.w.t The sense and awareness Of
Allah s.w.t in the heart Constantly
engaged with him jalla jalaluhu In praising him,
glorifying him And being grateful and thankful to
him And Who focus on The creation of
the heavens and the earth People who are
interested in science And technology, people who are
interested in In how the world Allah s
.w.t how he created it And how
he runs it and so on All of
these things When the believer, and remember the
sequence of it First know Allah First obey
Allah, first have taqwa Then go into science
The result of that is Rabbana maa khalaqta
haza batilan subhanaka faqina azabunna O Allah you
have not created all of this in vain
All glory to you Save me from the
fire When this is not there When the
sequence is reversed Or there is only one
focus On the world On science and technology
On the creation of the world Then you
have people who are scientists Who are atheists
Because they don't see the signs of Allah
They see the thing by itself They don't
know where it came from And they Have
all kinds of Ridiculous statements And explanations for
it So what did Allah give us three
things One, Allah created a bird Called the
bar-tailed godwit And when I say called
This is the name we give to the
bird Bar-tailed godwit It's about this size,
the size of your hand It's the size
of a snipe Long, long, big bird It's
what's called a shore bird This bird flies
From Alaska To New Zealand 11,500 kilometers
And it has non-stop flight In nine
days and nights What does that mean?
It means the sun rises, the sun sets
The sun rises, the sun sets, and the
bird is flying There are oceans underneath The
bird is flying There are forests underneath, the
bird is flying There are deserts underneath, the
bird is flying There are cities underneath, the
bird is flying Nine days and nine nights
No food, no water No sleep Allah created
the brain of the bird in such a
way that half the brain sleeps and half
the brain is awake while the bird is
still flying.
It's not an albatross coasting on a 12
-foot wingspan.
It's a small bird.
It's beating its wings.
Nine days and nights, nonstop flight from Alaska
to New Zealand.
Ask yourself, why?
If you say it's going because of food,
it does not have to go all the
way to New Zealand to get food.
There's plenty of food much closer to Alaska.
The bird does not need to go all
the way to New Zealand.
So, why is this bird going all the
way to New Zealand from Alaska to New
Zealand?
Why is it flying nonstop?
Why doesn't it stop on the way somewhere?
Ask yourself, why?
Second bird, the bar-headed goose.
Bar-headed geese, they take off again from
Alaska.
They go straight up, hit the jet stream
and head south.
The jet stream is at a height of
33,000 feet.
The temperature there is minus 59 degrees Celsius.
Minus 59.
And they fly a thousand miles a day.
That's the speed.
Now, the last time I checked, these geese
were not carrying oxygen cylinders on their backs.
So, how do they fly?
In an atmosphere at that height of 33
,000 feet, the atmosphere is almost devoid of
oxygen.
There's very, very little oxygen.
Temperature of minus 59.
The same goose, if you get your hands
on it, say, Bismillahi r-Rahmani r-Rahim,
put it in your freezer, at minus 4,
minus 6, it freezes.
At minus 59, it flies.
Ask yourself, why?
Ask only why this one bird does this?
Third, one of my favourite, the ruby-throated
hummingbird.
Flies from the Amazonian rainforest, from Chile, from
South America.
Migrates from there to the bank of the
Mississippi River in North America.
Part of that migration route is across the
Gulf of Mexico, a distance of 600 miles.
This bird covers that distance non-stop because
it's a little, it's a little bird that
big.
It's not a water bird.
If it lands in the water, it becomes
fish food.
So, it must cover the whole distance.
It does that in a time period of
26 hours of non-stop flight.
What does that mean?
It means the bird takes off at dawn.
As the sun rises, the bird is flying.
Sun is at its zenith.
Hot afternoon, bird is flying.
Sunsets, bird is flying.
Through the night, the bird is flying.
It's a dark night, no stars, no moon,
the bird is flying, does not lose energy,
does not lose direction.
Two hours into the new day, it lands
on the other side of the Gulf of
Mexico, in the United States of America without
a visa.
That is the ruby-throated hummingbird.
Again, ask the question, why?
If you say for food, then remember, it's
coming out from the South American rain forest,
which is like living inside a bar of
chocolate for the bird.
It has all the food in the world
it needs.
Why does it go north?
My submission to it is, all of these
things, and there are many, many, many more,
that Allah swt created in His creation.
All these birds, they are so that we
understand the kalaam of Allah.
When Allah swt said,
Allah says, who holds them up?
Who holds them up?
Remember, think about this.
The little bird, and it's not one of
them, all of them, flying in the night,
pitch dark, across the Gulf of Mexico, who
knows the world is there, except the one
who created it, except the one who looks
after it, except the one who protects it.
I remind myself, when you think about what
Allah swt gave us, at a personal level,
at a personal level.
I wrote a poem the other day, and
the title of the poem is, We know
you O Allah, by your bounties uncounted.
By the rays of the sun, by the
light of the moon, by the vast empty
space and stars that dwell therein, by the
rain and the snow that help our gardens
grow, by the trees, by the fruits, by
joys and sorrow, we know you O Allah,
by your bounties uncounted.
By the life-giving rain, by sunshine likewise,
by the dew drop on the thorn in
the light of the dawn, by the fire
of sunset, as it lights up another land,
by the bugle of the stag, by the
beating of my heart, we know you O
Allah, by your bounties uncounted.
By dreams that came true, by dreams unfulfilled,
by prayers answered, sometimes in unexpected ways, by
prayers unanswered, for which we thank you today,
by parents, by siblings, by children, especially teenagers,
we know you O Allah, by your bounties
uncounted.
By the silence of the forest and the
grandeur of mountains, by the depth of the
ocean, hiding treasures unknown, by the fish, by
the birds, by the black-capped chickadee, by
the cardinal in the snow, by the waiting
blue heron, we know you O Allah, by
your bounties uncounted.
By the marlin as he rises on his
tail and throws the hook, by the song
of the loon on the night of the
full moon, by the storm, by the typhoon,
by COVID, and still being alive, by waking
every morning, by sleeping every night, we know
you O Allah, by your bounties uncounted.
By a future that looks dark, promising a
dawn very bright, inshaAllah, by our values, our
compassion, our courage, by the truth, by those
who lift us when we fall and fight
for us when we can't, we know you,
we love you, we thank you and worship
only you, we know you O Allah, by
your bounties uncounted.
We know Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala also
by through Rasulullah ﷺ.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, laqad manna
Allahu ala l-mu'minina idh ba'sa fihim rasulan
min anfusihim yataluhu alayhim ayatihi wa yuzakkihim wa
yu'allimuhumu l-kitabu wa l-hikmah wa
in kanu min qawluhu la fihi Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala said that verily and truly,
Allah has indeed conferred a great favour on
the believers by raising a messenger from among
them, reciting to them his revelation, purifying them
and teaching them the book, the Quran al
-Karim and teaching them wisdom, for indeed they
had previously been clearly astray.
There are detailed lectures of mine on this,
so I won't go into those details here,
but let me assure you as far as
this deen is concerned that Rasulullah ﷺ is
the only ni'mah of Allah, the only blessing
of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, that Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala himself called his blessing.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala called this, called
the Nabi ﷺ his blessing.
Allah did not do this with anything or
anybody else, he did that with Muhammad ﷺ.
So I ask myself and I ask you
to ask yourself, to what extent do I
obey the Rasulullah ﷺ?
To what extent do I have the sunnah
of Rasulullah ﷺ with me?
Because to follow the sunnah of the Rasulullah
ﷺ is to have the Rasul with you,
alaihi salam.
What's the benefit of having Rasulullah ﷺ with
us?
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala told us.
Allah said, wa maa kanallahu liyu'adhibahum wa
anta fihim, wa maa kanallahu mu'adhibahum wa
hum astaghfiru.
He said, but Allah will never punish them
while you, O Muhammad ﷺ, are in their
midst.
While you were with them, Allah will never
punish them.
In today's life, to have the sunnah of
the Nabi ﷺ in our lives is to
have the Nabi ﷺ in our lives.
And then Allah said, nor would He ever
punish them if they sought forgiveness, if they
prayed for forgiveness.
So let us make a lot of istighfar.
Astaghfiru Allah illa li la ilaha illa huwa
alhayru khayrun wa atuwwilayh.
Let us make a lot of istighfar.
So finally, what must we do to connect
our children to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?
Three critical steps.
Number one, as I mentioned before, get connected
to Allah yourself.
You cannot connect unless you have a connection.
And for that, make tahajjud fard on yourself.
No matter where you are, whether you are
traveling, whether you are buqeem in your home,
whether you are well or sick, make sure
that you pray tahajjud at least two rakat
every single day without fail.
Talk to Allah, man.
Talk to Allah because Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala understands that.
He understands us.
He listens to us.
He knows our languages.
He knows what's in our hearts.
Tell Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala your story.
Allah knows the story anyway, but this is
the position of the abd, the position of
the slave, the position of the one who
is bonded to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
that he tells him a story.
Make tahajjud fard on yourself.
Talk to Allah.
Number two, follow the sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam in your life.
Follow the sunnah in your life.
Every single thing that you try to do,
do it according to the sunnah.
For that, it is essential to study the
seerah of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, to
study his biography, to understand what did he
do, why did he do it, why did
he do that, what kind of challenges did
he have in his life.
His life is so beautiful, so composite.
Any situation in your life, you want to
know how to be a great father, look
in the life of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam.
As a great parent, father or mother, look
in the life of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam.
You want to know how to be a
good son or daughter, look in the life
of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
You want to know how to be a
good employer, employee, how to be a teacher
or student, how to be somebody who is
a leader, how to be somebody who is
a follower, every single aspect of life, how
to earn a living, what to do with
that money, all of that and more is
in the life of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam, so please study the seerah.
It's absolutely critical, please study the seerah and
make the following of sunnah again and follow
yourself.
You have to follow somebody, follow Muhammad sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam, follow the best example that
ever existed.
And finally, focus on your own actions and
behaviour.
Because children listen with their eyes, they don't
care what you say until they see what
you do.
They don't care what you say until they
see what you do.
And finally, finally, finally, make dua for your
children, specifically make dua for your children.
There is nothing more powerful than the dua
of the parent.
Make dua for your children.
You owe it to them and this is
the greatest blessing that you can give them.
And nobody other than you can do that
because only you are their parent.
So make dua for your children.
Earn halal, eat halal, make dua for your
children.
I ask Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam to
help us to do that which is pleasing
to him and to help us to stay
in a situation, live in a situation where
he is pleased with us and we ask
Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam to take us
in a situation when he is pleased with
us.
Wa sallallahu ala nabiyyil kareem wa ala alihi
wa sahbihi wa nabiyyin wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.
