Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim.
Alhamdulillahi Rabbil Alameen.
Wa salatu wa salamu ala sharafil anbiya wal
mursaleen.
Muhammadur Rasulullahi sallallahu alaihi wa ala alihi wa
sahbihi wa sallam.
Tasliman kathiran kathira fama ba'du.
My brothers and sisters, the topic of my
khutbah today is Wahuwa ma'akum aynama kuntum.
As Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, He
is with you wherever you are.
So He is always with us.
Alhamdulillah.
Mankind lives a life of anxiety.
Every human being, no matter what status, what
position, what wealth, what power, what piety, what
sinning, always, always, every human being lives in
a state of anxiety.
The nature of the anxiety differs, the quantum
of the anxiety differs, but there's nobody in
this world, if he or she is living,
and if they have intelligence, then anxiety is
bound with that.
Mankind's life revolves around trying to safeguard himself
or herself from things that cause them that
anxiety.
The causes of anxiety are different for different
people.
For some they are financial, for others they
have to do with careers, and for others
they are far more basic, relating to survival
itself, but there is nobody who is free
from anxiety.
Happiness does not lead to suicide, neither does
sadness.
Despair leads to suicide.
Complete loss of hope.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala spoke about hope,
and He said, هو الذي خلق السماوات والأرض
He said,
which means, in Surah Al-Hadeed, He, Jalla
Jalaluhu, it is He who created the heavens
and the earth in six days and then
استوى, He made استوى, rose over the throne
in a manner that suits His Majesty and
Grace.
He knows what goes into the earth and
what comes forth from it, what descends from
the heavens and what ascends thereto and He
is with you, by His knowledge, wherever you
may be and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
sees all that you do.
There is no room for despair in the
heart of the one who knows Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
And so I call this ayah, an ayah
of great hope.
Hope, especially because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
mentioned His presence.
There is a magnitude of difference, like the
difference between the heavens and the earth, between
the promise of the help of the king
and the presence of the king himself.
the real king.
The promise of help from the king is
limited, the presence of the king and therefore
the help that comes from that is unlimited.
One relates to circumstances, the other has no
boundaries.
For one to draw comfort from the presence
of someone in one's life, there are two
requirements.
You should know and truly appreciate the power
of the one who is with you, and
you should have a connection with him that
enables you to invoke that power, to call
upon that power to help you whenever you
need it.
Allah is real, what He said is real,
so let us get real.
The three major benefits of appreciating Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala's presence, there are three major
benefits.
The first one, when the person is constantly
aware of the presence of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala in his or her life, he
or she is protected from sin, it's a
shield against sin.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ
Allah said those, He is
talking about Al-Ulil al-Baq in the
famous ayat of Surat Al-Alimran.
Allah said, they are those who remember Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala standing, sitting and lying
down on their sides and they think and
reflect deeply about the creation of the heavens
and the earth and they say, Our Rabb,
You have not created all of this without
purpose.
Glory be to You.
Give us salvation and protect us and save
us from the torment of the fire.
All concerns about pleasing, second benefit, all concerns
about pleasing people drop from the shoulders of
the one who is aware of the presence
of Allah in his life.
All hope from people is nullified because the
person realizes that it is only Allah who
can help him and that all conditions are
dependent on Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's will.
So if he or she is concerned with
the pleasure of Allah, then Allah will take
care of his affairs.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, فَلَا تَخْشَوْهُمْ
Allah
said, so do not fear them but fear
me so that I may complete my blessings
on you and that you may be guided.
Number three, the result of being aware of
the presence of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
in our lives is that the person becomes
stress free.
And his heart is free from all anxiety
and the fear of creatures and the fear
of circumstances and the fear of conditions.
The person becomes tranquil and has peace of
mind and his life is full of peace
and harmony and tranquility.
About this Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said,
Allah said, those who believe
in Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, in the
oneness of Allah, in Islam, and whose hearts
find rest and sukoon in the remembrance of
Allah, verily in the remembrance of Allah do
hearts find peace.
Someone asked,
Hasan al-Basri r.a, why he always
looked very peaceful and stress free?
He said, he said four things.
He said, it is because I am aware
of four things.
One, I am aware that Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala created me for a purpose and
that is for his ibadah.
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, وَمَا
And so, I
worship Him.
He said, I am aware that Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala has written my rizq.
What I am supposed to get, Allah has
already determined that.
And therefore, nobody else can get that and
so I don't worry about that.
And third, he said, I am aware that
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is watching me
and so I am ashamed to commit any
sin.
And number four, he said, I am aware
that one day I will meet Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala and so I try to
prepare for that.
I remind myself and you, my brothers and
sisters, that the Rab of Hasan al-Basri
r.a is also our Rab.
The same Rab and we are his Ibad
as was Hasan al-Basri r.a. So
let us try to attain the state of
peace and tranquility that he had.
Finally, to action.
What one must do to attain the state
of awareness of the presence of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
Remember, you don't take rizq because you have
faith.
You have faith because you take rizq.
Trust is the result of rizq.
Every episode of taking rizq increases that faith.
So take rizq on Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
That is the meaning of tawakkul, to rizq
on Allah.
In the words of Barbara Winters, when you
come to the end of the light of
all that you know, and are about to
step off into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is to know that one of two
things will happen.
There will be something firm to stand on
or you will be taught how to fly.
I realized this when I first tried rappelling
in Pune, abseiling in Pune and stepped off
the top of Sinagar Fort into space, hanging
300 feet above rocks.
It was only when I believed the trainer
and stepped off the cliff that I discovered
the joy.
The joy of hanging in space, safe and
secure, held by the rope.
Until that moment, all that I had heard
from the trainer about the rope and its
strength and so on, had been theory.
I believed him because I had no reason
not to believe him.
But I understood what he meant only when
I took the rizq and stepped off into
space.
To believe Allah is with you is to
take that leap of faith.
To know, not just to believe, but to
know with certainty, with yaqeel, that he does
not drop a catch.
That is the essence of tawakkul.
To know that he provides from sources that
we cannot even imagine.
That's the beginning of al-iman bil ghayb.
Taking rizq means deciding in favor of obeying
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
When disobedience seems to be more beneficial, that
is when you realize the strength of the
rope of Allah.
Then you revel in the joy of living
a life that is free from all stress.
We need to convert words into experience.
We need to take the rizq of living
by our beliefs.
We need to discover the joy of living
stress-free.
I ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for
his help.
Awareness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's presence
in our lives is a shield from sin.
How can someone who is aware of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala, his presence, that Allah
is with him, do something which he knows
displeases Allah?
Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said, there will
surely be groups of my nation, who will
come on the day of rising, on the
day of judgment, with good deeds like the
white mountains of Tihamah.
But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will scatter
them like dust.
Sawwan radiallahu anhu asked, Ya Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam, please describe them to us, lest
we unwittingly, unknowingly become like them.
He said, they will be your brothers, and
they will be just like you, and they
will pray at night just like you do.
However, they are people who, when they are
in private, when they are by themselves, in
secret, they do all sorts of haram things,
that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has forbidden.
And this is in Ibn Majah.
Sin is a disease.
A person who is aware of Allah's presence,
knows that there is no such thing as
secret.
Sin is a disease.
It is a disease which is worse than
fatal, because all physical and mental disease ends
with death, if it is not cured before
that.
But if sin remains with us, and we
don't repent and change, then it goes with
us into our graves, and will be with
us when we are resurrected, and can be
the reason for us to be punished on
the Day of Judgment.
Sin also weakens the person, mentally, spiritually, psychologically,
and emotionally, and as a result, physically.
Sin creates depression and despair.
Sin weakens our efforts.
Awareness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives
us comfort and courage.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala said, إِن يَنصُرْكُمُ
In Surah Al-Imran, Allah said, if Allah
helps you, no one can defeat you.
But if He denies you help, who else
can help you?
So, in Allah, let the believers put their
trust.
Remembering that Allah is with us, wherever we
are, as He said, helps us to live
a clean life of obedience to Him.
That gives us comfort in this life and
Jannah in the Akhirah.
We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for
this awareness at all times.
Allah said, O believers, enter Islam
wholeheartedly and fully and completely and do not
follow shaitan's footsteps.
Surely, he is your sworn enemy.
This reinforces for us that Islam is a
complete way of life.
And that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's pleasure
must be considered in everything we say or
do.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala warned us against
following the footsteps of shaitan and his agents.
Everything begins with obedience to Allah in the
way, the sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam.
This is the meaning of Islam.
This is the meaning of being Muslim.
I remind myself and you that when we
commit sins, we only damage ourselves in this
life.
And we open ourselves to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala's punishment when we meet him.
Just consider for a second, who is the
first victim of the drunkard, the smoker, the
junkie, the gambler?
Who is the first and foremost victim who
gets harmed first and foremost?
It is the person himself.
What happens to the respect and credibility of
the liar and the cheat, the slanderer and
a person with bad character?
His character, his own reputation gets destroyed.
That is the first casualty.
The first casualty is the person himself or
herself.
Sin harms the sinner first and foremost.
Yet Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in his
mercy does not shut the doors of his
forgiveness and calls us sinners, my slaves.
How can we thank our Rab Jalaluddin whose
mercy has no bounds?
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala promised to forgive
all sins provided we seek forgiveness.
Let's hasten to that.
Let's rush to that.
The doors of mercy and forgiveness of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala are open for any
one of us who wants to turn to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in repentance.
The beginning of all goodness is to own
up our sins and beg Allah for forgiveness.
taqnatu min rahmati Allah.
Inna Allaha yaqfiru dhunuba jami'a innahu huwal
ghafurun raheem.
Allah said, say, O Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam, that Allah says, O my slaves who
have exceeded the limits against their souls, do
not lose hope in Allah's mercy, for Allah
certainly forgives all sins.
He indeed is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
To finally close the circle and complete the
loop, we must remember that when we leave
this world, we will leave everything behind except
our deeds.
The kafan has no pockets.
The grave will fit only our body.
Everything we have will be taken from us.
But how we earned it and how we
spent it will go with us.
Focus on what will go with us and
don't sell that for what we must leave
behind anyway.
See what a fantastic bargain that is.
Allah is giving us what is forever in
exchange for what we will leave behind anyway.
I demand myself from you, let us choose
wisely because we will be with our choices
forever.
