In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the
Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of
all the worlds.
And peace and blessings be upon the messengers
and prophets.
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, peace and
blessings be upon him and his family and
companions.
Peace be upon him and his family.
Next, my brothers and sisters, I am sure
many of you have heard these sayings and
these true narratives.
I don't say story because sometimes stories are
made up.
The true narratives about our son of Salihin,
for example, Abdullah bin Mubarak.
Abdullah Ali, who was among the greatest of
the Tabi'een, he said, I spent 30
years learning Adab before I approached the Deen.
30 years learning Adab.
Similarly, Imam Malik bin Anas, he says
that, my mother used to take me to
Masjid-e-Nabawi-e-Sharif at the time
of Fajr.
So, she would wake me up before Fajr
and then she would wake him to Wudu.
As a little kid, he was about five
years old maybe or less.
And she would dress him up and she
would tie an Amama on his head.
This little kid, tie an Amama on his
head.
And then she would take him to Masjid
-e-Nabawi-e-Sharif and put him in
the class of Rabi'at-ur-Rai.
Rahmatullah Ali, who was one of his teachers.
And she would say to him, take from
the Akhlaq and take from the Adab of
Rabi'at before you take from his Ilm.
Take from the Adab of Rabi'at-ur
-Rai before you take from his Ilm.
The reason I say this is because today
we seem to live in a world, and
especially in this country, where Adab is completely...
there is no Adab.
May Allah bless all of you who are
sitting here with Adab, Alhamdulillah.
But otherwise, there is no Adab.
Now, see the importance of Adab.
The first Hadith in Sayyid Muslim is the
Hadith which is known as Hadith Jibreel.
Hadith Jibreel is narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar,
who narrates from his father, Umar ibn al
-Khattab.
And Hadith Jibreel is considered, it's called the
Ummul Sunnah.
It's called the mother of the Sunnah.
I'm sure many of you or all of
you know the Hadith.
You would have heard it sometime or the
other.
It's one of the most important Hadiths.
Where Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated and he
said that we were sitting in the company
of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, which means
that there were a number of them sitting
with the Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And he said a man came, who we
did not know.
His clothes were extremely white.
And his hair was extremely black.
And there were no signs of travel on
his body.
So, he came from the desert, but there
was not a speck of dust on him,
no sweat on him, nothing on him.
And he came and he stood at the
end of the room of the Wazir, where
they were sitting.
And he called Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
he said, Ya Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
can I come forward?
And Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, come.
So, he came through the people.
And he sat in front of Rasulullah sallallahu
alayhi wa sallam, in the position of Tashahud.
And Nabi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was also
sitting like this.
And he sat in front of him in
the position of Tashahud, with his knees touching
the knees of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And he leaned forward and he put his
hands on the thighs of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam.
So, you know, that close.
Now, before I go into the rest of
the Hadith, see what is being taught here.
What is being taught here is the adab
of learning.
And from the adab of learning is that
you sit as close to the Ustad as
possible.
Because the teacher is the manifestation of the
knowledge.
The knowledge comes to you because of the
teacher.
The book is the manifestation of knowledge.
That's the reason why when you take Imam
Malik Rahmatullah Ali Ajib, these people.
Imam Malik Rahmatullah Ali Ajib, when he would
give Dars of Hadith, and he is giving
Dars of his own Kitab, which is Muwatta.
He would make ghusl, he would put on
his best clothes, then he would come to
Wajahid Nabi Sharif, he would pray Duraqatul Salat,
then he would sit and he would give
the Dars.
Although his own book.
But what does the book have?
It has the Hadith of Nabawiya sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam.
And we have the famous instance, where one
day he was sitting and giving Dars, and
people saw the colour left his face, he
became white.
And they could see that he was in
tremendous pain, but he's not saying anything, so
the people also out of respect, they didn't
ask him anything.
When he finished that whole Dars, then he
collapsed.
So they went and they quickly, you know,
put some water and so on, revived him,
and they saw that a scorpion had bitten
him, it got under his shirt, it had
bitten him more than 30 times.
They asked him, Sayyidi, why didn't you say
anything?
I mean, this is Jai, you don't have
to do that.
Even in Salah, if there is something which
is, you know, harming you, or you are
allowed to kill that thing or get yourself
out of it, there's no problem.
Why is it, does he not know, if
Imam Malik does not know the Usool, then
who knows the Usool?
He said, because of the adab of, and
he pointed to the Rauza Mubarak, and he
says, hadi sahibul khabar.
It's because of the adab for Muhammad Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam.
I am narrating his Hadith, I don't want
that to be interrupted, to be stopped.
So in Hadith Jibreel, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
is sitting there, Jibreel-e-Salam comes, sits
right close to him, and then he is
asking, now see, this Hadith is so beautiful,
it is a whole pedagogy of learning and
teaching and how to teach and how to
learn.
Because Jibreel-e-Salam came and he is
asking Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam questions, but it's
not a test of the Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam, he knows that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
knows these things, this is nothing new for
him.
The question and answer is being done to
teach the people in the room, to teach
the people in the Masjid, they are the
actual students.
But Jibreel-e-Salam is not coming and
giving a lecture, he is coming and talking
to the Rasul-e-Salam and he is
asking him questions, he says, Ya Rasulullah, he
says, Ya Muhammad, what is Islam?
And Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to say,
I bear witness that there is no god
but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad
is the Messenger of Allah, and I bear
witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,
and Hajj, the five pillars of Islam.
And then he says, what is Iman?
And Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam describes the six
elements of Iman.
Iman, Iman Billah, Walaika, Kutub, Rasul,
Al-Jawal Akhira, Qadr.
Khayrihi wa Sharrihi min Allahi Ta'ala.
And then he says, Wa Mal Ihsan, Ya
Rasulullah, what is Ihsan?
And see the reply of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam.
He says, An Ta'budallaha Ka'annakatar, as
if you can see.
To worship Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala as
if you can see Allah.
To have this awareness, this sense of being
in the glory and majesty and presence of
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, and to worship
Allah as if you can see Him.
Fa illam takun tarafa innahu yanak.
And though you cannot see Him, you know
that He is seeing you.
And then he asked him about the signs
of the last day.
He asked him, when is the day of
judgement?
And Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, the one
who is asking knows as much as the
one who is being asked.
Meaning, only Allah knows.
And then he said, what are the signs?
Then he gave him the signs.
Now, point I'm making here is that as
far as learning is concerned, one thing we
have to clearly understand is Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala is the one who makes the
rules.
Whether it is physics, whether it is chemistry,
whether it is learning, whether it is disease,
whether it is health, everything to do with
this dunya and akhira, the rule maker, the
law maker is who?
Is Allah.
So that the Rasul Alaihi Salatu Wasalam came
to teach us those rules.
He came to teach us these laws.
Some we call the laws of physics, some
we call the laws of chemistry, some we
call the natural laws and whatnot, and some
are the laws of Islam.
They're all made by Allah.
Newton did not make gravity, Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala made gravity, and so on and
so on.
So the reason why the Rasul came, Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam, was to teach us these laws
and say, look, these are the laws of
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
Now, he didn't teach us about physics and
chemistry because that was, these are what we
call the uloom of which help, ayana, which
help to understand.
The actual uloomul ula, the aala uloom, are
the uloom of the shariah, of the deen.
The Rasul came to teach us this so
that we can then live our lives correctly
according to these laws.
Because one of the realities of life is
that if we are in the purview of
a law, the only way to survive and
to thrive is by following the law.
For example, the law of gravity is that
gravity, the earth, has a force which pulls
towards itself anything which is free-falling.
Anything which is in the purview of gravity,
to the extent to which gravity extends, anything
in that space is pulled towards the earth,
free-falling object, and this is pulled at
a rate of 32 feet per second per
second, that's the acceleration.
As in the famous experiment of Galileo where
he dropped a feather and he dropped an
iron ball from a height in almost a
vacuum and both reached the floor at the
same time.
This is the law of gravity.
Now, if you or me or anybody, we
go up in a plane and we say
I'm going to be doing skydiving and you
jump out of the plane at 20,000
feet or whatever elevation they do it and
you say, well, you know, I am Muslim,
alhamdulillah, and I am going to be reciting
Quran all the time.
From the minute I jump off the plane,
I will say, Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim, Alhamdulillah, Rabbil
Alameen, and so on.
So I don't need a parachute.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will make me
land safely, nothing will happen to me.
Right?
Now, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala has the
power to do this if He wants.
We are not denying the khudrat of Allah.
We are not denying the khudrat of Allah,
but what is the sunnat of Allah?
What is likely to happen?
Almost 100% of the times, you will
die reciting the Quran, that's it.
That's it.
And Allah knows whether that death is halal
or haram because you literally commit suicide.
You know you are supposed to have a
parachute and pull it.
You don't do that.
And you say, I'm reciting Quran.
Well, you die reciting Quran, but you jumped
out of the plane.
So whether it's suicide or not, Allah knows
best.
But point is that reciting Quran won't help
you.
Being Muslim won't help you.
Nothing will help you because the law of
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala enforced at the
time is the law of gravity.
That law is also made by Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala Jalla Jalaluhu.
And if you don't follow the law, you
will suffer.
This is what the Rabbi Alayhi Salaam came
to teach us.
He came to teach us the laws which
are above these laws, which are the laws
of the Akhira.
And he came to teach us what is
halal and what is haram on the face
of it, two kinds of food.
The same chicken, one which is Zabiha, which
is slaughtered in the correct way, hand slaughtered
saying Bismillah.
And the other one, somebody chopped its head
off or something or it got cut by
a machine, whatnot.
No difference.
By looking at it, this is meat, this
is meat.
This is chicken, this is chicken.
One is not pork and the other one
is not chicken.
Same chicken.
But one is halal, one is haram.
Why?
Because Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala made the
rule.
I'm giving you only one example, but all
of the examples of the rules of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, on the face of
it, there is no difference between this and
that, except that in one, there is the
Rida of Allah, there is the Nur of
Allah.
In the other one, there is the Ghadab
of Allah.
May Allah protect us from that.
And this comes when we learn the Deen
with the Adab that is required of it.
Because the Adab of learning is part of
the rules.
That is also a law.
That you will get knowledge if you approach
it with Adab.
You will not get knowledge if you approach
it without Adab.
Because Adab means that there is a certain
concentration, there is a certain feeling of need,
there is a certain feeling of that I
am in need of this knowledge.
So I come there, I sit there with
respect and I pay attention and I try
to remember and recall and I try to
take some notes and then I go with
the intention of applying it in my life.
That's the whole point of learning.
The whole point of learning is not simply
to listen and go away, but to listen
and to apply it in our lives.
No matter how small.
In the whole lecture, if you just pick
up one small thing and apply it, Alhamdulillah,
this is good.
That is the Adab of learning.
So I remind myself and you and I
will end with this, which is that let
us focus on the fact that just like
the law of gravity or whatever, Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala made the laws and if
you are in the purview of that law
to survive and to benefit and to take
advantage, you have to follow the law.
And so also the law of learning, which
is that learning comes only when it is
approached with Adab.
And that is why the Salafi Salihin, our
scholars, they understood this and they approached it
in that way and they got what Allah
gave them.
We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
help us to approach the Deen with the
Adab that is due for this Deen.
We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
accept it from us.
We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
make it easy for us.
We ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
open our hearts to His Nur and to
His Khair and Barakah and to fill our
lives with that.
