Maryam Amir – Why did Allah reveal the verse about believing men and women

Why was this first revealed? It's one of

the favorite verses of so many people, indeed,

Muslim men and Muslim women, and it continues

talking about beautiful qualities of the believers. One

of the reasons for revelation mentioned by Bateada

is that a group of the woman companions

went to the mothers of the believers. The

mothers of the believers have a set of

verses in which the Quran is addressing specifically

them that starts a few verses before this

one and ends right before this one starts.

So this group of companions

these women go to the mothers of the

believers

and they say, you were mentioned and we

were not, and had there been some goodness

in us, we would have been mentioned too.

I wanna contextualize this for us because the

entire Quran says, oh, believers, and that generally

means all men and all women. Sometimes, the

verses are specific to men or sometimes the

verses are specific to women. But overall, the

Quran addresses everyone. And the women companions are

aware of revelation being revealed addressing them and

their reality as well. Quran was revealed in

response to Khaleb Radiallahu Anha and the dua

that she made. The Quran mentions women specifically

many times,

but the woman companions wanted something special for

them too, just like the mothers of the

believers

received. Now, if that's the case, why doesn't

this verse only talk about women? If women

were the ones asking, why does it even

mention men? Ibn Ashur, a Qur'anic commentator

explains

the tawra

address men mainly and once in a while

would specify

rulings for women.

However, the Quran

is for men and women both and only

specifies rulings for men or rulings for women

as the exception. So he mentions that the

verse starts with inna, which is for sure,

for real, indeed.

These qualities, these rulings are for men and

women both. If you go back and look

at the verses that are specific to the

mothers of the believers, you will see qualities

that are mentioned in those verses which parallel

many of the qualities here. Allah revealed revelation

just because some women felt

like they wanted something special for them. I

want you to know that Allah affirms

that he hears you when you call and

he answers when you do. And if you

want to hear Allah talking to you, you

can open the Quran.
