00:00:01 --> 00:00:02
			In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious,

00:00:02 --> 00:00:03
			the Most Merciful.

00:00:04 --> 00:00:06
			All praise is due to Allah, Lord of

00:00:06 --> 00:00:06
			the worlds.

00:00:08 --> 00:00:12
			And peace and blessings be upon the best

00:00:12 --> 00:00:13
			of Allah's creation.

00:00:15 --> 00:00:18
			And upon his family, his companions, and those

00:00:18 --> 00:00:19
			who are guided by his guidance.

00:00:20 --> 00:00:22
			And we await his sunnah until the Day

00:00:22 --> 00:00:23
			of Judgment.

00:00:24 --> 00:00:27
			Allahumma a'allimna ma yanfa'una wa anfa

00:00:27 --> 00:00:30
			'na bima a'allamtana wa zidna a'ilma

00:00:31 --> 00:00:35
			wa arina alhaqqa haqqan warzuqna ittiba'ah wa

00:00:35 --> 00:00:39
			arina albaatila baatilan warzuqna ishtinaabah wa ja'alna

00:00:39 --> 00:00:43
			mimman yastami'una alqawla fa yattabi'una ahsana

00:00:45 --> 00:00:52
			As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh We

00:00:52 --> 00:00:56
			continue in our series on the lives of

00:00:56 --> 00:01:01
			the sahabiyat and specifically we're going through the

00:01:01 --> 00:01:06
			lives of ummahatul mu'mineen, the mothers of the

00:01:06 --> 00:01:09
			believers, the wives of Rasool Allah ﷺ.

00:01:14 --> 00:01:16
			And so we move on to the sixth

00:01:16 --> 00:01:22
			of the wives that the Prophet ﷺ married.

00:01:23 --> 00:01:30
			And today we're going to be with Umm

00:01:30 --> 00:01:32
			Salamah radiallahu anha.

00:01:32 --> 00:01:36
			Umm Salamah radiallahu anha.

00:01:40 --> 00:01:46
			Umm Salamah was actually her kunyah, her nickname

00:01:46 --> 00:01:48
			that she was known by.

00:01:49 --> 00:01:56
			Her real name is Hind bint Abi Umayyah.

00:01:57 --> 00:02:03
			Hind bint Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah.

00:02:03 --> 00:02:12
			Ibn al-Mughirah from the family of Banu

00:02:12 --> 00:02:14
			Makhzum, which was one of the families of

00:02:14 --> 00:02:15
			Quraysh.

00:02:18 --> 00:02:22
			And so she was born about 25 to

00:02:22 --> 00:02:24
			30 years before the hijrah.

00:02:27 --> 00:02:31
			And her father, Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah,

00:02:32 --> 00:02:35
			was one of the noble men of Quraysh

00:02:35 --> 00:02:36
			and one of their leaders.

00:02:43 --> 00:02:50
			He was a very wealthy businessman and he

00:02:50 --> 00:02:51
			was very generous.

00:02:52 --> 00:02:55
			He was known, one of his nicknames was

00:02:55 --> 00:03:01
			Zad al-Rakib, which means the one who

00:03:01 --> 00:03:03
			would provide for the travelers.

00:03:04 --> 00:03:07
			This was because whenever he would go on

00:03:07 --> 00:03:10
			a journey and he had people with him,

00:03:10 --> 00:03:14
			he wouldn't allow anyone to eat anything they

00:03:14 --> 00:03:15
			brought.

00:03:15 --> 00:03:19
			He would pay the expenses and provide the

00:03:19 --> 00:03:22
			food for every person in that journey.

00:03:25 --> 00:03:27
			So this was her father.

00:03:29 --> 00:03:32
			And by the way, her father was the

00:03:32 --> 00:03:36
			brother of al-Waleed ibn al-Mughirah.

00:03:37 --> 00:03:40
			al-Waleed ibn al-Mughirah, the father of

00:03:40 --> 00:03:41
			Khalid ibn al-Waleed.

00:03:41 --> 00:03:44
			The father of Khalid ibn al-Waleed.

00:03:44 --> 00:03:47
			So she is a cousin of Khalid ibn

00:03:47 --> 00:03:48
			al-Waleed.

00:03:51 --> 00:03:55
			As for her mother, she was Atika bint

00:03:55 --> 00:03:57
			Amir ibn Rabi'ah.

00:03:58 --> 00:04:02
			Atika bint Amir ibn Rabi'ah, also from

00:04:02 --> 00:04:03
			Quraysh.

00:04:04 --> 00:04:07
			So we see how Um Salama radiallahu anha

00:04:07 --> 00:04:11
			came from a noble family of Quraysh, and

00:04:11 --> 00:04:17
			she was brought up in this noble household.

00:04:17 --> 00:04:20
			She had a father who was known for

00:04:20 --> 00:04:22
			being generous, and so on.

00:04:25 --> 00:04:28
			Now Um Salama radiallahu anha was initially married

00:04:28 --> 00:04:30
			to Abu Salama.

00:04:32 --> 00:04:34
			She was initially married to Abu Salama.

00:04:35 --> 00:04:37
			And this was even from before Islam.

00:04:38 --> 00:04:42
			And so both of them were among the

00:04:42 --> 00:04:43
			early Muslims in Mecca.

00:04:45 --> 00:04:48
			They accepted Islam very early on.

00:04:50 --> 00:04:53
			His real name, Abu Salama, his real name

00:04:53 --> 00:04:56
			was Abdullah ibn Abdul Asad.

00:04:59 --> 00:05:05
			And his mother was Barra bint Abdul Muttalib.

00:05:05 --> 00:05:12
			Barra bint Abdul Muttalib, the aunt.

00:05:13 --> 00:05:17
			The aunt of Rasool Allah ﷺ.

00:05:18 --> 00:05:21
			His paternal aunt.

00:05:26 --> 00:05:31
			Abu Salama was also the foster brother of

00:05:31 --> 00:05:32
			Rasool Allah ﷺ.

00:05:34 --> 00:05:38
			So they were breastfed by the same woman.

00:05:40 --> 00:05:43
			So we can see how close Abu Salama

00:05:43 --> 00:05:44
			was to the Prophet ﷺ.

00:05:45 --> 00:05:48
			And so Abu Salama with his wife Um

00:05:48 --> 00:05:53
			Salama, they were very devoted to Islam from

00:05:53 --> 00:05:54
			the very beginning.

00:05:56 --> 00:05:58
			And so since they were among the early

00:05:58 --> 00:06:01
			Muslims, they faced what all the other Muslims

00:06:01 --> 00:06:03
			faced in those early days of Islam, of

00:06:03 --> 00:06:08
			opposition and persecution from their own people and

00:06:08 --> 00:06:09
			their own families.

00:06:10 --> 00:06:16
			As a result, Rasool Allah ﷺ permitted the

00:06:16 --> 00:06:19
			Muslims who were being persecuted, he permitted them

00:06:19 --> 00:06:24
			to migrate on the very first migration, and

00:06:24 --> 00:06:26
			that was to Habesha, Abyssinia.

00:06:27 --> 00:06:30
			And so among the first batch to migrate

00:06:30 --> 00:06:35
			was Um Salama and Abu Salama.

00:06:36 --> 00:06:39
			They were in the first batch to migrate

00:06:39 --> 00:06:39
			to Abyssinia.

00:06:41 --> 00:06:44
			Um Salama, she narrates the story, she says,

00:06:45 --> 00:06:49
			when Mecca became unbearable to live in, and

00:06:49 --> 00:06:53
			the companions of Rasool Allah ﷺ were persecuted

00:06:53 --> 00:06:56
			all for the sake of their deen, and

00:06:56 --> 00:06:59
			they knew that Rasool Allah ﷺ was unable

00:06:59 --> 00:07:02
			to do anything about it, while he was

00:07:02 --> 00:07:05
			protected by his uncle, meaning Abu Talib, and

00:07:05 --> 00:07:07
			none of that which was happening to the

00:07:07 --> 00:07:10
			companions was happening to him, it was then

00:07:10 --> 00:07:14
			that Rasool Allah ﷺ said to them, that

00:07:14 --> 00:07:17
			in the land of Abyssinia there is a

00:07:17 --> 00:07:21
			king whom no one is dealt with unjustly.

00:07:21 --> 00:07:25
			So go to his land, so that Allah

00:07:25 --> 00:07:27
			can grant you relief from that which you

00:07:27 --> 00:07:28
			are currently in.

00:07:29 --> 00:07:32
			She says, so we went there, and we

00:07:32 --> 00:07:35
			ended up in the best land, under the

00:07:35 --> 00:07:39
			best protection, safe with our deen, not fearing

00:07:39 --> 00:07:41
			any oppression.

00:07:44 --> 00:07:46
			So she lived there with her husband, and

00:07:46 --> 00:07:55
			then there was news that the initial persecution

00:07:55 --> 00:08:03
			was kind of decreasing, because certain individuals started

00:08:03 --> 00:08:06
			joining the Muslims, like Umar ibn al-Khattab,

00:08:07 --> 00:08:12
			bringing some power to the Muslims.

00:08:13 --> 00:08:15
			So they ended up coming back to Mecca.

00:08:15 --> 00:08:19
			They ended up coming back to Mecca, however

00:08:19 --> 00:08:21
			they realized that the persecution was still continuing.

00:08:23 --> 00:08:26
			And so they stayed for some time, until

00:08:26 --> 00:08:33
			the major hijrah was announced, and that was

00:08:33 --> 00:08:34
			the hijrah to Medina.

00:08:37 --> 00:08:41
			So now Um Salama, radiallahu anha, along with

00:08:41 --> 00:08:44
			her husband Abu Salama, and their baby son,

00:08:45 --> 00:08:47
			so now they had a son that was

00:08:47 --> 00:08:50
			about two years old, and this was Salama.

00:08:51 --> 00:08:53
			The three of them, they planned to make

00:08:53 --> 00:08:54
			the hijrah together.

00:08:56 --> 00:09:02
			However, this was stopped, when the families of

00:09:02 --> 00:09:06
			both Abu Salama and Um Salama, they found

00:09:06 --> 00:09:08
			out of their plan.

00:09:09 --> 00:09:12
			So they came, and they prevented them.

00:09:13 --> 00:09:17
			Now this is a very very inspiring story,

00:09:17 --> 00:09:20
			so let us hear it from Um Salama

00:09:20 --> 00:09:21
			radiallahu anha.

00:09:22 --> 00:09:28
			She says, We came back from Abyssinia, and

00:09:28 --> 00:09:31
			my husband wanted to go to Abyssinia again.

00:09:32 --> 00:09:35
			But he heard that Medina was the new

00:09:35 --> 00:09:38
			destination for hijrah, and that there are some

00:09:38 --> 00:09:41
			Muslims there right now, so he decided to

00:09:41 --> 00:09:42
			take his family and go to Medina.

00:09:43 --> 00:09:46
			So he got me on a camel, and

00:09:46 --> 00:09:49
			put my son on my lap, and we

00:09:49 --> 00:09:50
			were ready to leave Mecca.

00:09:51 --> 00:09:54
			But then my family came to me and

00:09:54 --> 00:09:57
			said, We're not going to allow you to

00:09:57 --> 00:09:58
			go with your husband.

00:09:59 --> 00:10:02
			We're not going to allow him to take

00:10:02 --> 00:10:05
			you with him to that foreign land.

00:10:06 --> 00:10:08
			So they pulled me away from my husband.

00:10:11 --> 00:10:13
			So now her family prevents her from leaving.

00:10:15 --> 00:10:18
			She says, when Banu al-Asad, basically the

00:10:18 --> 00:10:21
			family of Abu Salama, when they heard this,

00:10:21 --> 00:10:25
			they came, and they stepped in, and they

00:10:25 --> 00:10:30
			said, Well, if you're going to prevent her

00:10:30 --> 00:10:35
			from going with her husband, then we're not

00:10:35 --> 00:10:36
			going to allow you to take the child.

00:10:39 --> 00:10:42
			So basically they were going to keep Um

00:10:42 --> 00:10:44
			Salama with them, but now what about the

00:10:44 --> 00:10:44
			child?

00:10:45 --> 00:10:47
			Salama, the child, was with her.

00:10:49 --> 00:10:51
			But the family of Abu Salama, they said,

00:10:52 --> 00:10:53
			we have more right to this child than

00:10:53 --> 00:10:54
			you do.

00:10:55 --> 00:10:57
			So they started to pull the child.

00:10:58 --> 00:11:02
			It's mentioned in some narrations that they were

00:11:02 --> 00:11:11
			pulling till Salama's arm broke, his shoulder got

00:11:11 --> 00:11:12
			dislodged.

00:11:15 --> 00:11:19
			And so the family of Abu Salama, they

00:11:19 --> 00:11:21
			end up taking the child.

00:11:24 --> 00:11:27
			As for Abu Salama, then he was free

00:11:27 --> 00:11:28
			to go.

00:11:29 --> 00:11:32
			So he left for Medina.

00:11:32 --> 00:11:36
			He left for Medina, all by himself.

00:11:37 --> 00:11:40
			So now you have Abu Salama separated from

00:11:40 --> 00:11:44
			Um Salama, and they're both separated from their

00:11:44 --> 00:11:44
			son.

00:11:47 --> 00:11:51
			And so Abu Salama leaves to Medina, and

00:11:52 --> 00:11:56
			Um Salama, along with her son, are in

00:11:56 --> 00:11:57
			Mecca, but separated.

00:11:59 --> 00:12:03
			Um Salama, she says, I would go out

00:12:03 --> 00:12:06
			every day in the morning to the outskirts

00:12:06 --> 00:12:10
			of Mecca, basically that place where they were

00:12:10 --> 00:12:10
			separated.

00:12:11 --> 00:12:13
			And I would sit on a rock and

00:12:13 --> 00:12:14
			cry for hours.

00:12:15 --> 00:12:16
			And I would do that on a daily

00:12:16 --> 00:12:17
			basis.

00:12:18 --> 00:12:20
			And this continued for about a year.

00:12:21 --> 00:12:24
			And so imagine this woman, missing her husband,

00:12:25 --> 00:12:28
			missing her child, completely devastated.

00:12:30 --> 00:12:35
			She says, so then one of Banu al

00:12:35 --> 00:12:39
			-Maghira, basically my relatives, she said one of

00:12:39 --> 00:12:42
			my relatives, saw the condition I was in,

00:12:42 --> 00:12:45
			this depressed condition I was in, crying every

00:12:45 --> 00:12:45
			day.

00:12:46 --> 00:12:48
			And so he came, he was someone who

00:12:48 --> 00:12:49
			pitied her.

00:12:50 --> 00:12:51
			And he came and he said to my

00:12:51 --> 00:12:54
			family, will you not have any mercy and

00:12:54 --> 00:12:55
			sympathy on this woman?

00:12:56 --> 00:12:58
			Allow her to go and join her husband.

00:12:59 --> 00:13:00
			So they finally agreed.

00:13:02 --> 00:13:04
			And they told Um Salama, you're free to

00:13:04 --> 00:13:06
			go and join your husband if you wish

00:13:06 --> 00:13:06
			to do so.

00:13:08 --> 00:13:11
			So now when the family of Abu Salama

00:13:11 --> 00:13:14
			heard about that, they handed over the child,

00:13:15 --> 00:13:16
			Salama, to her.

00:13:16 --> 00:13:18
			And they said, now you can go and

00:13:18 --> 00:13:19
			join your husband.

00:13:20 --> 00:13:24
			So finally, the relief from Allah subhanahu wa

00:13:24 --> 00:13:24
			ta'ala came.

00:13:24 --> 00:13:29
			And she now has her son with her.

00:13:30 --> 00:13:31
			And so she picked up her son.

00:13:32 --> 00:13:34
			She mounted a camel.

00:13:36 --> 00:13:39
			And she started making her journey to Medina

00:13:39 --> 00:13:41
			all alone.

00:13:42 --> 00:13:43
			She had no one with her.

00:13:44 --> 00:13:48
			Imagine, a woman all by herself, traveling in

00:13:48 --> 00:13:49
			the desert.

00:13:49 --> 00:13:51
			And this is, we're talking about a distance

00:13:51 --> 00:13:53
			between Mecca and Medina.

00:13:53 --> 00:13:57
			A distance of more than 450 kilometers.

00:13:57 --> 00:14:00
			In those days, it would take some 10

00:14:00 --> 00:14:03
			to 12 days for that journey.

00:14:06 --> 00:14:08
			So she started heading out.

00:14:08 --> 00:14:11
			And when she reached a place called Tan

00:14:11 --> 00:14:14
			'im, this is just a few kilometers outside

00:14:14 --> 00:14:21
			of Mecca, on the boundary of the Haram

00:14:21 --> 00:14:21
			land.

00:14:23 --> 00:14:27
			When she reached there, there was a very

00:14:27 --> 00:14:28
			noble man from Quraysh.

00:14:30 --> 00:14:31
			Uthman ibn Talha.

00:14:32 --> 00:14:33
			Uthman ibn Talha.

00:14:34 --> 00:14:35
			He saw her.

00:14:36 --> 00:14:38
			And when he saw her, he recognized her.

00:14:39 --> 00:14:46
			And he said, Daughter of Abu Umayyah, where

00:14:46 --> 00:14:47
			are you heading?

00:14:48 --> 00:14:50
			She said, I'm going to Medina.

00:14:51 --> 00:14:53
			He asked, do you have anyone accompanying you?

00:14:54 --> 00:14:56
			She said, no, but I have Allah and

00:14:56 --> 00:14:57
			this son of mine.

00:14:58 --> 00:15:01
			He said, in that case, I will accompany

00:15:01 --> 00:15:01
			you.

00:15:02 --> 00:15:05
			It's not appropriate to leave you alone on

00:15:05 --> 00:15:06
			this long journey.

00:15:08 --> 00:15:10
			Now, Uthman ibn Talha was a mushrik at

00:15:10 --> 00:15:10
			that time.

00:15:12 --> 00:15:13
			But he saw this woman and he felt

00:15:13 --> 00:15:14
			sympathy for her.

00:15:15 --> 00:15:16
			And he wanted to help her out.

00:15:17 --> 00:15:19
			And she was not just any ordinary woman.

00:15:19 --> 00:15:21
			She was, you know, from this noble family

00:15:21 --> 00:15:22
			of Quraysh.

00:15:23 --> 00:15:27
			Umm Salama, she says, I swear I have

00:15:27 --> 00:15:30
			never been in the company of any Arab

00:15:30 --> 00:15:32
			more noble than him.

00:15:33 --> 00:15:36
			Whenever we would make a stop, he would

00:15:36 --> 00:15:39
			make my camel kneel, and then he would

00:15:39 --> 00:15:41
			move away until I dismounted.

00:15:42 --> 00:15:45
			Then he would come back and take the

00:15:45 --> 00:15:46
			camel and tie it.

00:15:46 --> 00:15:49
			Then he would leave and sleep under a

00:15:49 --> 00:15:50
			tree far away from me.

00:15:51 --> 00:15:53
			Next day in the morning, he would bring

00:15:53 --> 00:15:56
			my camel, prepare the saddle, and then he

00:15:56 --> 00:15:58
			would call me to come and mount.

00:15:58 --> 00:15:59
			And then he would leave.

00:16:00 --> 00:16:03
			When I was on the camel, he would

00:16:03 --> 00:16:05
			come back and then he would guide me

00:16:05 --> 00:16:07
			throughout the journey.

00:16:09 --> 00:16:12
			She says he continued doing that throughout the

00:16:12 --> 00:16:15
			journey until we reached the outskirts of Medina.

00:16:16 --> 00:16:19
			And we could see Qubah in the distance.

00:16:20 --> 00:16:24
			So Qubah was just outside of Medina.

00:16:25 --> 00:16:27
			That is where the Prophet ﷺ first arrived

00:16:27 --> 00:16:29
			in his own hijrah.

00:16:30 --> 00:16:33
			And that is where he built Masjid Qubah

00:16:33 --> 00:16:37
			before continuing and entering into Medina itself.

00:16:38 --> 00:16:42
			So she says, once we reached the outskirts

00:16:42 --> 00:16:43
			of Medina, we could see Qubah in the

00:16:43 --> 00:16:43
			distance.

00:16:43 --> 00:16:47
			He pointed to Qubah and he said, you

00:16:47 --> 00:16:48
			see that village over there?

00:16:48 --> 00:16:50
			That is where your husband is.

00:16:50 --> 00:16:52
			That is where your husband is.

00:16:53 --> 00:16:55
			Basically Abu Salamah was staying there at the

00:16:55 --> 00:16:55
			time.

00:16:56 --> 00:16:58
			And he said, now you're on your own.

00:16:59 --> 00:17:03
			And then he left, returning to Mecca.

00:17:06 --> 00:17:15
			Umm Salamah she comments on Uthman ibn Talha.

00:17:15 --> 00:17:18
			She says, I know of no other family

00:17:18 --> 00:17:21
			in Islam who suffered like that of Abu

00:17:21 --> 00:17:22
			Salamah.

00:17:22 --> 00:17:23
			Meaning our own family.

00:17:24 --> 00:17:27
			And I swear I have never had a

00:17:27 --> 00:17:32
			more noble companion than Uthman ibn Talha.

00:17:35 --> 00:17:36
			And so she said this because she was

00:17:36 --> 00:17:37
			impressed by him.

00:17:39 --> 00:17:41
			Even though we have to understand there was

00:17:41 --> 00:17:45
			this enmity between the Muslims and the Kuffar

00:17:45 --> 00:17:45
			of Quraysh.

00:17:46 --> 00:17:46
			Right?

00:17:47 --> 00:17:50
			There was this animosity and enmity.

00:17:52 --> 00:17:55
			And here you had Uthman ibn Talha who

00:17:55 --> 00:17:56
			was not a Muslim.

00:17:57 --> 00:18:01
			He went out of his way to accompany

00:18:01 --> 00:18:03
			a woman who's leaving Mecca.

00:18:03 --> 00:18:05
			Which was a big no-no.

00:18:05 --> 00:18:08
			You weren't supposed to leave Mecca for Medina.

00:18:08 --> 00:18:11
			And you weren't supposed to be helping anyone

00:18:11 --> 00:18:11
			to do that.

00:18:11 --> 00:18:13
			And so he went out of his way

00:18:13 --> 00:18:15
			and helped her in this noble way.

00:18:15 --> 00:18:17
			And so she was impressed by it and

00:18:17 --> 00:18:18
			she appreciated it.

00:18:19 --> 00:18:21
			Uthman ibn Talha, he would later on become

00:18:21 --> 00:18:26
			a Muslim after most of the prominent members

00:18:26 --> 00:18:28
			of his family were killed in the Battle

00:18:28 --> 00:18:28
			of Uhud.

00:18:31 --> 00:18:36
			And he was also from the family who

00:18:36 --> 00:18:37
			were the keepers of the keys of the

00:18:37 --> 00:18:38
			Kaaba.

00:18:39 --> 00:18:42
			And Rasulullah ﷺ kept the keys with them

00:18:42 --> 00:18:44
			after he conquered Mecca.

00:18:45 --> 00:18:47
			And the keys are actually still with them

00:18:47 --> 00:18:48
			till this very day.

00:18:50 --> 00:18:53
			The family of Banu Abd al-Dar.

00:18:53 --> 00:18:56
			The family of Banu Abd al-Dar.

00:18:58 --> 00:19:03
			Now before continuing, there are two lessons that

00:19:03 --> 00:19:04
			we can learn from this story.

00:19:07 --> 00:19:12
			The first lesson is that when Iman settles

00:19:12 --> 00:19:16
			deep in the heart it becomes impossible for

00:19:16 --> 00:19:18
			a person to put forward anything at the

00:19:18 --> 00:19:20
			cost of his Iman.

00:19:22 --> 00:19:25
			Even if it is something as dear as

00:19:25 --> 00:19:27
			his family being separated from him.

00:19:30 --> 00:19:33
			So Abu Salama, he did not cave into

00:19:33 --> 00:19:36
			the pressure when he was forcibly separated from

00:19:36 --> 00:19:37
			his wife and his child.

00:19:37 --> 00:19:41
			He continued on his Hijrah because that was

00:19:41 --> 00:19:42
			a part of his Iman.

00:19:43 --> 00:19:46
			We have to understand in those days when

00:19:46 --> 00:19:51
			the Hijrah was announced everyone had to leave

00:19:51 --> 00:19:55
			Mecca to make Hijrah migrate to Medina.

00:19:57 --> 00:20:01
			And no one was excused except those who

00:20:01 --> 00:20:02
			were unable to.

00:20:03 --> 00:20:05
			They were being held back.

00:20:05 --> 00:20:08
			Like as we saw Umm Salama herself.

00:20:09 --> 00:20:11
			But they did not stop him.

00:20:11 --> 00:20:13
			Abu Salama, they didn't stop him from leaving.

00:20:15 --> 00:20:19
			So he said, you know, as long as

00:20:19 --> 00:20:23
			I'm free, then I'm not going to stay

00:20:23 --> 00:20:23
			behind.

00:20:24 --> 00:20:26
			But that was a huge sacrifice, right?

00:20:28 --> 00:20:29
			It was a huge sacrifice.

00:20:30 --> 00:20:32
			He could have said, well, let me stay

00:20:32 --> 00:20:33
			behind with my wife and my child.

00:20:34 --> 00:20:35
			I'll be excused.

00:20:36 --> 00:20:38
			But he understood that no, Hijrah was mandatory

00:20:38 --> 00:20:39
			on everyone.

00:20:39 --> 00:20:41
			And so he made this huge sacrifice.

00:20:42 --> 00:20:44
			And by doing so, he was victorious over

00:20:44 --> 00:20:47
			the enemies of Islam because the only reason

00:20:47 --> 00:20:50
			they did that was they thought that perhaps

00:20:50 --> 00:20:52
			it would make him change his mind and

00:20:52 --> 00:20:53
			make him stay behind.

00:20:54 --> 00:20:58
			The second lesson that we learn is that

00:20:58 --> 00:21:00
			Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will always make

00:21:00 --> 00:21:03
			a way out for those who fear Him.

00:21:04 --> 00:21:06
			For those who fear Him, for those who

00:21:06 --> 00:21:07
			have Taqwa of Allah.

00:21:07 --> 00:21:08
			Iman and Taqwa.

00:21:10 --> 00:21:15
			وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا And whoever

00:21:15 --> 00:21:17
			has the Taqwa of Allah, whoever fears Allah,

00:21:18 --> 00:21:20
			Allah will make a way out for him.

00:21:22 --> 00:21:25
			And so Umm Salama was determined to make

00:21:25 --> 00:21:28
			that long and dangerous journey in the middle

00:21:28 --> 00:21:30
			of the desert, even if on her own,

00:21:32 --> 00:21:33
			right?

00:21:33 --> 00:21:34
			She was prepared to do that.

00:21:36 --> 00:21:40
			So as a result, Allah subhanahu wa ta

00:21:40 --> 00:21:42
			'ala sent her someone who would accompany her

00:21:42 --> 00:21:44
			and give her protection.

00:21:45 --> 00:21:47
			And so this is how Allah takes care

00:21:47 --> 00:21:51
			of His believing servants, right?

00:21:53 --> 00:21:55
			When you do things for the sake of

00:21:55 --> 00:22:00
			Allah, then Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will

00:22:00 --> 00:22:02
			make a way out for you, will make

00:22:02 --> 00:22:03
			things easy for you.

00:22:04 --> 00:22:06
			And we also see in this story the

00:22:06 --> 00:22:09
			Fitrah and how it acted in the heart

00:22:09 --> 00:22:12
			of Uthman ibn Talha, which is what later

00:22:12 --> 00:22:13
			led him to accept Islam.

00:22:16 --> 00:22:20
			So now, Umm Salama radiallahu anha is reunited

00:22:20 --> 00:22:24
			with her family and they enjoy each other's

00:22:24 --> 00:22:27
			company in their new home in Medina.

00:22:28 --> 00:22:30
			And now they end up having three more

00:22:30 --> 00:22:34
			children, Umar, Zaynab and Ruqayyah.

00:22:34 --> 00:22:37
			So now they have four children, along with

00:22:37 --> 00:22:38
			Salama.

00:22:40 --> 00:22:44
			And Abu Salama, he went on to participate

00:22:44 --> 00:22:47
			in the Battle of Badr, which was in

00:22:47 --> 00:22:49
			the second year of the Hijrah.

00:22:50 --> 00:22:53
			And then the following year, he participated in

00:22:53 --> 00:22:54
			the Battle of Uhud.

00:22:56 --> 00:22:58
			And it was in the Battle of Uhud

00:22:58 --> 00:23:00
			that he was injured.

00:23:01 --> 00:23:03
			He did not die in the battle, but

00:23:03 --> 00:23:04
			he was badly injured.

00:23:05 --> 00:23:08
			And after the battle he was being treated

00:23:08 --> 00:23:09
			for his injury.

00:23:10 --> 00:23:15
			And then Rasulullah ﷺ sent him on a

00:23:15 --> 00:23:16
			military expedition.

00:23:17 --> 00:23:20
			So his wound was getting healed, but then

00:23:20 --> 00:23:22
			it ruptured again.

00:23:22 --> 00:23:27
			And when he came back, basically his health

00:23:27 --> 00:23:32
			deteriorated and he soon passed away after that.

00:23:33 --> 00:23:38
			Now before he passed away, Abu Salama had

00:23:38 --> 00:23:41
			an interesting conversation with his wife, Um Salama.

00:23:44 --> 00:23:47
			He said to her, if a husband dies

00:23:47 --> 00:23:50
			and his wife does not get married after

00:23:50 --> 00:23:55
			him, they would be brought together again in

00:23:55 --> 00:23:55
			Jannah.

00:23:56 --> 00:23:58
			That is if both of them are destined

00:23:58 --> 00:23:59
			to go to Jannah.

00:24:00 --> 00:24:03
			If a husband dies and his wife does

00:24:03 --> 00:24:06
			not get married after him, they would be

00:24:06 --> 00:24:10
			brought together again in Jannah, if they are

00:24:10 --> 00:24:11
			both destined for Jannah.

00:24:14 --> 00:24:16
			So he made an agreement with Um Salama

00:24:17 --> 00:24:22
			that if either of them dies first, the

00:24:22 --> 00:24:25
			other one will not get married again.

00:24:27 --> 00:24:29
			So Um Salama, she agreed.

00:24:30 --> 00:24:32
			But then Abu Salama, he changed his mind.

00:24:33 --> 00:24:36
			So he thought about it and he realized

00:24:36 --> 00:24:40
			that, no, for the sake of Um Salama,

00:24:40 --> 00:24:43
			if I pass away before her, it is

00:24:43 --> 00:24:46
			best for her to get married, for someone

00:24:46 --> 00:24:50
			to be there for her, not only for

00:24:50 --> 00:24:51
			her but also our children.

00:24:52 --> 00:24:53
			So he said no.

00:24:53 --> 00:24:56
			I asked Allah that if I die, he

00:24:56 --> 00:25:00
			replaces me with someone better for you who

00:25:00 --> 00:25:02
			will marry you and will not harm you

00:25:02 --> 00:25:03
			or hurt you.

00:25:06 --> 00:25:10
			Um Salama, she then said, and who could

00:25:10 --> 00:25:12
			possibly be better than Abu Salama?

00:25:14 --> 00:25:16
			She couldn't imagine that there was someone who

00:25:16 --> 00:25:19
			could possibly be better than him, in terms

00:25:19 --> 00:25:26
			of his deen, his nobility.

00:25:28 --> 00:25:30
			He had so many good qualities, among the

00:25:30 --> 00:25:34
			first to embrace Islam, having made hijrah to

00:25:34 --> 00:25:36
			Abyssinia and then later on to Medina, and

00:25:36 --> 00:25:39
			then fought in both of the major battles,

00:25:39 --> 00:25:43
			and now he's passing away from that wound.

00:25:43 --> 00:25:45
			And so this tells us that they had

00:25:45 --> 00:25:50
			a very strong relationship and a very loving

00:25:50 --> 00:25:51
			relationship.

00:25:52 --> 00:25:55
			And so he ends up passing away, and

00:25:55 --> 00:25:58
			now Um Salama radiAllahu anha, she is all

00:25:58 --> 00:26:02
			alone with her small children, and she had

00:26:02 --> 00:26:04
			no other family with her.

00:26:05 --> 00:26:08
			Remember her family, they were non-Muslims, and

00:26:08 --> 00:26:08
			they were back in Mecca.

00:26:09 --> 00:26:14
			Her only main source of support was Abu

00:26:14 --> 00:26:14
			Salama.

00:26:15 --> 00:26:18
			And so Um Salama, she goes to the

00:26:18 --> 00:26:21
			Prophet ﷺ, and she tells him that Abu

00:26:21 --> 00:26:23
			Salama has passed away.

00:26:25 --> 00:26:31
			So Rasulullah ﷺ told her, he basically told

00:26:31 --> 00:26:32
			her to say the following du'a.

00:26:33 --> 00:26:35
			What was this du'a?

00:26:36 --> 00:26:49
			He said, Say, Oh Allah, reward

00:26:49 --> 00:26:53
			me for this calamity that I'm going through,

00:26:55 --> 00:26:57
			and replace it with something better.

00:27:00 --> 00:27:01
			So she made this du'a.

00:27:02 --> 00:27:05
			In another narration, Um Salama says, that I

00:27:05 --> 00:27:10
			once heard the Prophet ﷺ say, that there

00:27:10 --> 00:27:12
			is no Muslim who is struck with a

00:27:12 --> 00:27:13
			calamity.

00:27:14 --> 00:27:16
			And then he says, what Allah has told

00:27:16 --> 00:27:27
			us to say, And then he says, The

00:27:27 --> 00:27:30
			same du'a, Oh Allah, reward me for

00:27:30 --> 00:27:33
			my calamity, and compensate me with something better.

00:27:34 --> 00:27:37
			Whoever says this, the Prophet ﷺ said, Allah

00:27:37 --> 00:27:39
			will compensate him with something better.

00:27:40 --> 00:27:41
			It is a promise from Allah.

00:27:43 --> 00:27:47
			She says, So when Abu Salama passed away,

00:27:47 --> 00:27:51
			I asked, who among the Muslims could possibly

00:27:51 --> 00:27:53
			have been better than Abu Salama?

00:27:54 --> 00:27:57
			The first household to migrate, to join the

00:27:57 --> 00:27:58
			Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

00:28:00 --> 00:28:01
			But then I said it.

00:28:02 --> 00:28:09
			So initially, she had this hesitation, wondering, you

00:28:09 --> 00:28:12
			know, who could possibly be better than Abu

00:28:12 --> 00:28:12
			Salama?

00:28:12 --> 00:28:14
			What's the point of me saying this?

00:28:15 --> 00:28:16
			She says, Then I said it.

00:28:17 --> 00:28:23
			And Allah ﷻ compensated me, replaced for me,

00:28:23 --> 00:28:26
			none other than Rasulullah ﷺ.

00:28:27 --> 00:28:32
			And so we learn a huge lesson in

00:28:32 --> 00:28:32
			submission here.

00:28:35 --> 00:28:38
			Losing a loved one is a huge calamity.

00:28:39 --> 00:28:41
			And it tests a person in the most

00:28:41 --> 00:28:42
			extreme way.

00:28:43 --> 00:28:47
			But here, Um Salama, she didn't just lose

00:28:47 --> 00:28:47
			anyone.

00:28:48 --> 00:28:50
			She lost a husband who meant everything to

00:28:50 --> 00:28:50
			her.

00:28:51 --> 00:28:54
			So she couldn't imagine any other person in

00:28:54 --> 00:28:57
			the world who could possibly fill his place

00:28:57 --> 00:28:58
			in a better way.

00:29:02 --> 00:29:04
			But then when we are told something by

00:29:04 --> 00:29:07
			Allah and His Messenger, we have to believe

00:29:07 --> 00:29:07
			it.

00:29:08 --> 00:29:10
			Putting our own opinions and thoughts and emotions

00:29:10 --> 00:29:11
			to the side.

00:29:12 --> 00:29:15
			And that is exactly what Um Salama did.

00:29:16 --> 00:29:20
			It was the unwavering iman of Um Salama

00:29:20 --> 00:29:23
			that made her to say that dua with

00:29:23 --> 00:29:24
			certainty.

00:29:26 --> 00:29:26
			Right?

00:29:28 --> 00:29:30
			She said it because of her iman.

00:29:31 --> 00:29:34
			She said it knowing that whatever Rasulullah ﷺ

00:29:34 --> 00:29:36
			tells us, it is true.

00:29:38 --> 00:29:38
			Right?

00:29:38 --> 00:29:38
			It is true.

00:29:39 --> 00:29:42
			Even if I cannot seem to make sense

00:29:42 --> 00:29:43
			of it.

00:29:43 --> 00:29:44
			Right?

00:29:44 --> 00:29:45
			So that's the lesson we learn from this.

00:29:45 --> 00:29:48
			That there are certain things that sometimes we

00:29:48 --> 00:29:49
			cannot make sense of.

00:29:51 --> 00:29:53
			But as long as Allah and His Messenger

00:29:53 --> 00:29:56
			have said it, then we have to submit.

00:29:58 --> 00:30:00
			Because there is a wisdom in it.

00:30:01 --> 00:30:02
			But we may not see it.

00:30:02 --> 00:30:04
			And it could be that we may never

00:30:04 --> 00:30:04
			see it.

00:30:05 --> 00:30:06
			But there is good in it.

00:30:08 --> 00:30:13
			And so, she said it with iman, with

00:30:13 --> 00:30:13
			yaqeen, this dua.

00:30:14 --> 00:30:16
			Basically she is saying, Oh Allah, replace for

00:30:16 --> 00:30:19
			me something better than what I have lost.

00:30:20 --> 00:30:23
			And so, look at how that resulted in

00:30:23 --> 00:30:26
			Allah blessing her with a companion better than

00:30:27 --> 00:30:31
			anything she could have imagined Rasulullah ﷺ himself.

00:30:33 --> 00:30:33
			Right?

00:30:33 --> 00:30:35
			Abu Salama, he has his virtues.

00:30:35 --> 00:30:37
			He was a righteous believer.

00:30:38 --> 00:30:38
			Right?

00:30:39 --> 00:30:42
			There is no doubt about his goodness and

00:30:42 --> 00:30:48
			his righteousness and all of his other virtues.

00:30:49 --> 00:30:51
			But in the end of the day, there

00:30:51 --> 00:30:56
			is no comparison between him and Rasulullah ﷺ.

00:30:58 --> 00:30:59
			So, how did it happen?

00:31:01 --> 00:31:04
			After her waiting period of four months and

00:31:04 --> 00:31:07
			ten days, the waiting period for a widow

00:31:08 --> 00:31:11
			whose husband passes away, she has to wait

00:31:11 --> 00:31:13
			four months and ten days before she marries

00:31:13 --> 00:31:14
			someone else.

00:31:15 --> 00:31:18
			Once that was completed, she started receiving proposals.

00:31:19 --> 00:31:21
			And this was due to who she was

00:31:22 --> 00:31:25
			and the family she comes from, etc.

00:31:25 --> 00:31:29
			So initially, it was Abu Bakr ﷺ who

00:31:29 --> 00:31:32
			came and proposed to marry her.

00:31:33 --> 00:31:33
			But she declined.

00:31:34 --> 00:31:38
			Then Umar ibn al-Khattab came proposing to

00:31:38 --> 00:31:38
			her.

00:31:38 --> 00:31:40
			And she, once again, declined.

00:31:42 --> 00:31:47
			And then, the Prophet ﷺ sent someone to

00:31:47 --> 00:31:49
			propose for him.

00:31:51 --> 00:31:56
			And she said, I welcome that, but tell

00:31:56 --> 00:32:00
			Rasulullah ﷺ that I am a very, very

00:32:00 --> 00:32:05
			jealous woman and I have young children.

00:32:07 --> 00:32:09
			And on top of that, none of my

00:32:09 --> 00:32:14
			male relatives are present to marry me off

00:32:14 --> 00:32:15
			to him.

00:32:16 --> 00:32:20
			So, she agreed, but she wanted Rasulullah ﷺ

00:32:20 --> 00:32:21
			to know her condition.

00:32:23 --> 00:32:25
			That first of all, she's a very jealous

00:32:25 --> 00:32:26
			woman.

00:32:26 --> 00:32:29
			And Rasulullah ﷺ was already married to several

00:32:29 --> 00:32:29
			wives.

00:32:30 --> 00:32:33
			And she was afraid that maybe she would

00:32:33 --> 00:32:37
			do something that would, as a result of

00:32:37 --> 00:32:40
			her jealousy, that would anger the Prophet ﷺ

00:32:40 --> 00:32:41
			and then she would be punished by Allah.

00:32:43 --> 00:32:45
			And she mentioned that she had young children

00:32:45 --> 00:32:48
			who might be a burden for the Prophet

00:32:48 --> 00:32:48
			ﷺ.

00:32:50 --> 00:32:52
			And she mentioned that she did not have

00:32:52 --> 00:32:53
			any wali to marry her to him.

00:32:53 --> 00:32:57
			So the Prophet ﷺ said, you said that

00:32:57 --> 00:33:00
			you have children, Allah will take care of

00:33:00 --> 00:33:01
			those children.

00:33:01 --> 00:33:04
			And you said you are very jealous, and

00:33:04 --> 00:33:06
			so I am going to ask Allah to

00:33:06 --> 00:33:07
			take that jealousy away.

00:33:08 --> 00:33:13
			As for the walis who are absent, and

00:33:13 --> 00:33:15
			those who are dead, then none of them

00:33:15 --> 00:33:17
			would refuse to marry you to me.

00:33:17 --> 00:33:22
			Basically, none of them would have any objection

00:33:22 --> 00:33:24
			to me marrying you.

00:33:26 --> 00:33:31
			In one narration, it says that Umm Salama

00:33:31 --> 00:33:35
			said, I agree, but I am getting old.

00:33:36 --> 00:33:37
			Right?

00:33:37 --> 00:33:37
			I am getting old.

00:33:38 --> 00:33:42
			Now, Umm Salama was basically making excuses.

00:33:44 --> 00:33:44
			Right?

00:33:45 --> 00:33:46
			How old was she?

00:33:48 --> 00:33:50
			She was in her 30s only.

00:33:50 --> 00:33:52
			She was only in her 30s.

00:33:53 --> 00:33:55
			But she was saying that, O Messenger of

00:33:55 --> 00:33:57
			Allah, there are other women who are younger

00:33:57 --> 00:33:58
			than me who you can marry.

00:34:00 --> 00:34:02
			So when she said, I am getting old,

00:34:02 --> 00:34:05
			the Prophet ﷺ said, if you are old,

00:34:05 --> 00:34:06
			then I am older than you.

00:34:08 --> 00:34:11
			But all of this shows us that the

00:34:11 --> 00:34:16
			intention of Rasulullah ﷺ behind this marriage, and

00:34:16 --> 00:34:19
			many other marriages, as we have seen so

00:34:19 --> 00:34:23
			far, was not as the enemies of Islam

00:34:23 --> 00:34:23
			claim.

00:34:25 --> 00:34:25
			Right?

00:34:26 --> 00:34:29
			But rather, he married for the sake of

00:34:29 --> 00:34:30
			the Deen.

00:34:32 --> 00:34:36
			And so, Umm Salama, she would go on

00:34:36 --> 00:34:39
			to be the second most narrator of hadith

00:34:39 --> 00:34:42
			from the women after Aisha ﷺ.

00:34:43 --> 00:34:46
			And so she conveyed this knowledge from the

00:34:46 --> 00:34:48
			Prophet ﷺ, which no one else could.

00:34:49 --> 00:34:50
			Right?

00:34:50 --> 00:34:51
			So this was one of the reasons that

00:34:51 --> 00:34:54
			we mentioned in the marriage of Aisha ﷺ.

00:34:56 --> 00:34:58
			And this is also one of the reasons

00:34:58 --> 00:35:00
			the Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salama.

00:35:00 --> 00:35:02
			She was known for her intelligence, for her

00:35:02 --> 00:35:05
			knowledge, for her wisdom, as we are going

00:35:05 --> 00:35:05
			to see.

00:35:07 --> 00:35:08
			And on top of that, she was widowed.

00:35:10 --> 00:35:10
			Right?

00:35:11 --> 00:35:13
			And the Prophet ﷺ cared about his companions.

00:35:13 --> 00:35:14
			He cared about them.

00:35:15 --> 00:35:17
			And when he saw that she has no

00:35:17 --> 00:35:20
			one to take care of her, he married

00:35:20 --> 00:35:20
			her.

00:35:22 --> 00:35:25
			Now, the Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salama and

00:35:25 --> 00:35:29
			said, I'm going to give you your mahr,

00:35:30 --> 00:35:33
			your dowry, equal to that which I gave

00:35:33 --> 00:35:34
			to Zaynab.

00:35:35 --> 00:35:38
			So if you recall, the last of the

00:35:38 --> 00:35:41
			wives of the Prophet ﷺ that we covered

00:35:41 --> 00:35:44
			was Zaynab bint Khuzaymah.

00:35:45 --> 00:35:47
			Zaynab bint Khuzaymah.

00:35:47 --> 00:35:50
			And the Prophet ﷺ had just recently married

00:35:50 --> 00:35:53
			her, and she had passed away.

00:35:54 --> 00:35:56
			And so the Prophet ﷺ said, I'm going

00:35:56 --> 00:35:59
			to give you furniture equal to that which

00:35:59 --> 00:35:59
			I gave to Zaynab.

00:36:00 --> 00:36:01
			So what was this furniture?

00:36:02 --> 00:36:06
			You know, today we go to furniture shops

00:36:06 --> 00:36:09
			and we buy all kinds of things for

00:36:09 --> 00:36:10
			a newly wed couple.

00:36:10 --> 00:36:12
			But let's see what the Prophet ﷺ got

00:36:12 --> 00:36:13
			for Umm Salama.

00:36:13 --> 00:36:16
			Keeping in mind that he is the best

00:36:16 --> 00:36:17
			of mankind.

00:36:18 --> 00:36:21
			Keeping in mind that by now he wasn't

00:36:21 --> 00:36:22
			poor.

00:36:23 --> 00:36:25
			From all of these battles that he had

00:36:25 --> 00:36:28
			fought, there was income coming in.

00:36:29 --> 00:36:32
			So he could have easily spent most of

00:36:32 --> 00:36:34
			that money on his family.

00:36:35 --> 00:36:36
			And no one would have complained.

00:36:36 --> 00:36:38
			After all, he is the Messenger of Allah.

00:36:38 --> 00:36:42
			He deserved to live in a comfortable way.

00:36:44 --> 00:36:48
			He said, he ﷺ said to her, I

00:36:48 --> 00:36:50
			will give you no less than what I

00:36:50 --> 00:36:51
			gave to Zaynab.

00:36:52 --> 00:36:55
			I will give you two stone mills, stone

00:36:55 --> 00:36:59
			mills, which they used to make flour with.

00:37:00 --> 00:37:03
			I'll give you two stone mills, two clay

00:37:03 --> 00:37:06
			jars, and pillows stuffed with leaf.

00:37:07 --> 00:37:08
			That's it.

00:37:09 --> 00:37:10
			That was it.

00:37:11 --> 00:37:14
			He is our example and we should follow

00:37:14 --> 00:37:17
			in his footsteps, which Muslims today have unfortunately

00:37:17 --> 00:37:18
			abandoned.

00:37:19 --> 00:37:22
			When we marry off our children, we spend

00:37:23 --> 00:37:24
			extravagantly on them.

00:37:25 --> 00:37:28
			We're talking about crazy amounts.

00:37:29 --> 00:37:33
			So anyways, this would now make Umm Salama

00:37:33 --> 00:37:36
			the sixth wife of the Prophet ﷺ.

00:37:37 --> 00:37:40
			Now we mentioned, Umm Salama was known for

00:37:40 --> 00:37:45
			her intelligence, her knowledge, her wisdom.

00:37:47 --> 00:37:50
			And there are many examples of this, but

00:37:50 --> 00:37:52
			we'll mention one example of this.

00:37:55 --> 00:37:58
			And this is a very famous example that

00:38:00 --> 00:38:04
			took place during the Sulh al-Hudaibiyah.

00:38:06 --> 00:38:08
			The treaty of Hudaibiyah.

00:38:11 --> 00:38:14
			And so in the sixth year of the

00:38:14 --> 00:38:18
			Hijrah, in the sixth year of the Hijrah,

00:38:18 --> 00:38:20
			so we're talking about two or three years

00:38:20 --> 00:38:27
			after the marriage, the Prophet ﷺ left with

00:38:27 --> 00:38:33
			the companions for Mecca, intending on performing Umrah.

00:38:35 --> 00:38:37
			And he took Umm Salama with him.

00:38:40 --> 00:38:42
			When they reached close to Mecca, they were

00:38:42 --> 00:38:45
			prevented by Quraysh from entering Mecca.

00:38:46 --> 00:38:48
			So they camped outside Mecca at a place

00:38:48 --> 00:38:49
			known as Hudaibiyah.

00:38:51 --> 00:38:53
			And this was where they started to have

00:38:53 --> 00:38:55
			negotiations with Quraysh.

00:38:56 --> 00:39:00
			So Quraysh sent their envoys to meet the

00:39:00 --> 00:39:01
			Prophet ﷺ.

00:39:02 --> 00:39:04
			And there was a back and forth.

00:39:06 --> 00:39:08
			Basically, they entered into a peace treaty.

00:39:08 --> 00:39:13
			And this peace treaty became known as the

00:39:13 --> 00:39:15
			treaty of Hudaibiyah.

00:39:15 --> 00:39:17
			And so in the end, it was decided

00:39:18 --> 00:39:22
			that the Muslims would not perform Umrah on

00:39:22 --> 00:39:26
			this journey in this year, but rather they

00:39:26 --> 00:39:29
			would be allowed to come back the following

00:39:29 --> 00:39:30
			year to make Umrah.

00:39:33 --> 00:39:37
			But this was extremely difficult for the Muslims

00:39:37 --> 00:39:38
			to digest.

00:39:39 --> 00:39:44
			Imagine the Muslims who had left their homes

00:39:44 --> 00:39:47
			from Medina with the intention of performing Umrah,

00:39:48 --> 00:39:53
			and they were still in their Ihram, and

00:39:53 --> 00:39:55
			now you're telling them they have to go

00:39:55 --> 00:39:57
			back to Medina?

00:39:58 --> 00:40:00
			It was a tense situation.

00:40:00 --> 00:40:02
			They felt that they had been humiliated by

00:40:02 --> 00:40:04
			being prevented from entering Mecca.

00:40:05 --> 00:40:08
			This by an enemy who they felt that

00:40:08 --> 00:40:10
			they had finally overpowered.

00:40:10 --> 00:40:12
			And they were about to defeat.

00:40:13 --> 00:40:15
			We had the battle of Badr, then Uhud,

00:40:16 --> 00:40:18
			then after that the next major battle was

00:40:18 --> 00:40:23
			the battle of Ahzab, in which Quraysh left

00:40:23 --> 00:40:24
			humiliated.

00:40:25 --> 00:40:29
			So the Muslims felt that the balance of

00:40:29 --> 00:40:32
			power was turning in their favor, and we

00:40:32 --> 00:40:35
			should just enter Mecca with our weapons, and

00:40:35 --> 00:40:37
			let's just force our way in.

00:40:38 --> 00:40:41
			So now they're told that no, they have

00:40:41 --> 00:40:42
			to return back to Medina.

00:40:43 --> 00:40:44
			And so they felt that this was a

00:40:44 --> 00:40:48
			setback, and they didn't know how they could

00:40:48 --> 00:40:50
			return to Medina.

00:40:52 --> 00:40:56
			So now, Rasulullah ﷺ, who is being guided

00:40:56 --> 00:41:00
			by Allah, he tells his companions to start

00:41:00 --> 00:41:01
			packing up.

00:41:02 --> 00:41:07
			And he orders them to cancel their state

00:41:07 --> 00:41:09
			of Ihram that they were in.

00:41:09 --> 00:41:10
			How?

00:41:10 --> 00:41:12
			How do you get out of the state

00:41:12 --> 00:41:12
			of Ihram?

00:41:13 --> 00:41:13
			By shaving your heads.

00:41:14 --> 00:41:17
			So he told them, he gave them instructions.

00:41:18 --> 00:41:21
			Everyone, shave your heads, and slaughter your animals

00:41:21 --> 00:41:22
			that you brought.

00:41:22 --> 00:41:24
			So your sacrificial animals.

00:41:25 --> 00:41:27
			But you don't do that until after you're

00:41:27 --> 00:41:28
			done Umrah or Hajj.

00:41:29 --> 00:41:29
			Right?

00:41:32 --> 00:41:34
			So the Prophet ﷺ gave them these instructions,

00:41:35 --> 00:41:37
			and not a single person moved.

00:41:38 --> 00:41:39
			Imagine that.

00:41:40 --> 00:41:45
			Whenever Rasulullah ﷺ would order his companions to

00:41:45 --> 00:41:48
			do anything, they would immediately rush to it.

00:41:49 --> 00:41:50
			Without any hesitation.

00:41:52 --> 00:41:54
			But this time no one moved.

00:41:55 --> 00:41:56
			So he said it again.

00:41:57 --> 00:41:58
			And again no one got up.

00:41:59 --> 00:42:03
			The third time, and once again, not a

00:42:03 --> 00:42:08
			single man moved when they refused to comply

00:42:08 --> 00:42:09
			by his orders.

00:42:12 --> 00:42:12
			Right?

00:42:13 --> 00:42:14
			And he wasn't used to this.

00:42:14 --> 00:42:16
			The Prophet ﷺ was not used to this.

00:42:18 --> 00:42:22
			And so when he, when they refused, he

00:42:22 --> 00:42:27
			went into his tent, and who was there?

00:42:28 --> 00:42:30
			Um Salama رضي الله عنها.

00:42:31 --> 00:42:32
			He was angry.

00:42:33 --> 00:42:35
			And she could see the anger in his

00:42:35 --> 00:42:35
			face.

00:42:35 --> 00:42:36
			She asked him, what happened?

00:42:38 --> 00:42:42
			So he said to her, you know, my

00:42:42 --> 00:42:45
			companions, they are destroying themselves.

00:42:46 --> 00:42:48
			I have given them an order, and they

00:42:48 --> 00:42:49
			have disobeyed.

00:42:51 --> 00:42:54
			Obviously, you know, when we talk about their

00:42:54 --> 00:42:59
			disobedience here, it doesn't mean that their disobedience

00:42:59 --> 00:43:01
			was one of stubbornness.

00:43:01 --> 00:43:05
			Like, you know, Ahlul Kitab, like how Bani

00:43:05 --> 00:43:07
			Israel were to Musa ﷺ.

00:43:07 --> 00:43:07
			Right?

00:43:08 --> 00:43:13
			Where they said, قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا We hear

00:43:13 --> 00:43:14
			what you are saying, but we are disobeying

00:43:14 --> 00:43:14
			you.

00:43:15 --> 00:43:15
			No.

00:43:16 --> 00:43:17
			It wasn't the same.

00:43:18 --> 00:43:22
			The scholars mentioned that the Sahaba here were

00:43:22 --> 00:43:23
			only hesitating a bit.

00:43:25 --> 00:43:30
			They were waiting in hope that perhaps the

00:43:30 --> 00:43:33
			Prophet ﷺ will receive some revelation that would

00:43:33 --> 00:43:35
			change the situation at hand.

00:43:35 --> 00:43:37
			And that maybe there is a glimpse of

00:43:37 --> 00:43:42
			hope that we might be able to continue

00:43:42 --> 00:43:43
			our Umrah.

00:43:43 --> 00:43:46
			They were just hoping that the Prophet ﷺ

00:43:46 --> 00:43:47
			would change his mind or that Allah would

00:43:49 --> 00:43:53
			basically cancel that order, and so that's why

00:43:53 --> 00:43:53
			they weren't moving.

00:43:54 --> 00:43:58
			So anyways, when the Prophet ﷺ told Umm

00:43:58 --> 00:44:03
			Salama what happened, look at her wisdom.

00:44:04 --> 00:44:05
			Look at her wisdom.

00:44:06 --> 00:44:10
			She said, O Messenger of Allah, they have

00:44:10 --> 00:44:12
			gone through what you can see.

00:44:12 --> 00:44:13
			They've been through a lot.

00:44:16 --> 00:44:17
			They've been through a lot.

00:44:18 --> 00:44:19
			This is very difficult for them.

00:44:20 --> 00:44:23
			So don't talk to them about it, but

00:44:23 --> 00:44:25
			rather if you want them to follow your

00:44:25 --> 00:44:29
			order, then go out and do it yourself

00:44:29 --> 00:44:30
			in front of them.

00:44:32 --> 00:44:35
			So basically, actions speak louder than words.

00:44:37 --> 00:44:38
			That's what she was telling him.

00:44:40 --> 00:44:40
			Right?

00:44:41 --> 00:44:46
			So the Prophet ﷺ, he went out without

00:44:46 --> 00:44:47
			saying a word to anyone.

00:44:49 --> 00:44:51
			And he had his shaver, the one who

00:44:51 --> 00:44:54
			would shave him, he called him, and he

00:44:54 --> 00:44:57
			had his own head shaved, and then he

00:44:57 --> 00:45:01
			slaughtered his camels, and then he sat down,

00:45:01 --> 00:45:07
			and when he did that, everyone immediately got

00:45:07 --> 00:45:09
			up and carried out his orders.

00:45:12 --> 00:45:12
			Why?

00:45:14 --> 00:45:17
			Because now it was obvious that there's no

00:45:17 --> 00:45:19
			way we're going to complete our Umrah.

00:45:20 --> 00:45:22
			There's no way that there's going to be

00:45:22 --> 00:45:23
			a change here.

00:45:24 --> 00:45:24
			Right?

00:45:24 --> 00:45:26
			If the Prophet ﷺ has shaved his head,

00:45:26 --> 00:45:27
			then that's it.

00:45:27 --> 00:45:31
			There's no, it basically shattered their hopes.

00:45:31 --> 00:45:34
			And they knew that there's no turning back

00:45:34 --> 00:45:34
			now.

00:45:34 --> 00:45:36
			You know, we have to go back to

00:45:36 --> 00:45:36
			Medina now.

00:45:38 --> 00:45:40
			And so this incident, it really shows us

00:45:40 --> 00:45:43
			something of the personality of Umm Salamah.

00:45:44 --> 00:45:47
			You know, it shows us her problem-solving

00:45:47 --> 00:45:47
			skills.

00:45:48 --> 00:45:50
			It shows us her intelligence, her wisdom.

00:45:51 --> 00:45:54
			In a very difficult, intense situation, look at

00:45:54 --> 00:45:58
			how she calmed down the best of creation,

00:45:58 --> 00:45:59
			Rasulullah ﷺ.

00:45:59 --> 00:46:03
			And then how she also guided him on

00:46:03 --> 00:46:04
			what he should do.

00:46:05 --> 00:46:07
			Even though he was the Messenger of Allah,

00:46:08 --> 00:46:10
			and the most knowledgeable, and the most wise

00:46:10 --> 00:46:11
			of this Ummah.

00:46:12 --> 00:46:17
			But sometimes, Allah ﷻ conceals certain things from

00:46:17 --> 00:46:20
			him so that he could learn from others.

00:46:21 --> 00:46:22
			Right?

00:46:22 --> 00:46:23
			And this was not the only time.

00:46:24 --> 00:46:27
			There were many other incidents in the life

00:46:27 --> 00:46:31
			of the Prophet ﷺ where he wouldn't know

00:46:31 --> 00:46:32
			what to do.

00:46:32 --> 00:46:32
			Right?

00:46:33 --> 00:46:35
			Because Allah would not tell him what to

00:46:35 --> 00:46:36
			do in a particular situation.

00:46:38 --> 00:46:40
			This shows us that he was a human

00:46:40 --> 00:46:41
			being in the end of the day.

00:46:42 --> 00:46:42
			Right?

00:46:43 --> 00:46:48
			And it also shows us that Allah ﷻ

00:46:48 --> 00:46:52
			wanted to teach the Ummah that he was

00:46:52 --> 00:46:53
			a human being in the end of the

00:46:53 --> 00:46:53
			day.

00:46:54 --> 00:46:56
			And there are times when he has to

00:46:56 --> 00:46:57
			make his own decisions.

00:46:57 --> 00:46:58
			Right?

00:46:58 --> 00:47:02
			We saw that for example in the battle

00:47:02 --> 00:47:03
			of Ahzab.

00:47:04 --> 00:47:07
			When the enemy was coming and the Prophet

00:47:07 --> 00:47:09
			ﷺ didn't know what to do.

00:47:09 --> 00:47:10
			What should we do?

00:47:11 --> 00:47:14
			So it was Salman al-Farisi who gave

00:47:14 --> 00:47:16
			him the idea to build the trench.

00:47:17 --> 00:47:18
			He said this is what we do back

00:47:18 --> 00:47:18
			in Persia.

00:47:19 --> 00:47:21
			And this was unknown to the Arabs.

00:47:22 --> 00:47:24
			So he gave him that idea and the

00:47:24 --> 00:47:26
			Prophet ﷺ liked it and immediately they dug

00:47:26 --> 00:47:27
			the trench.

00:47:27 --> 00:47:29
			The point is that we see how sometimes

00:47:29 --> 00:47:31
			the Prophet ﷺ would not know what to

00:47:31 --> 00:47:31
			do.

00:47:32 --> 00:47:36
			And it would be his companions who would

00:47:36 --> 00:47:38
			give him suggestions and advice and in this

00:47:38 --> 00:47:41
			case it was his wife Umm Salama رضي

00:47:41 --> 00:47:42
			الله عنها.

00:47:42 --> 00:47:45
			And we also see how the Prophet ﷺ

00:47:45 --> 00:47:46
			did not act arrogantly here.

00:47:47 --> 00:47:48
			He was furious.

00:47:49 --> 00:47:49
			Right?

00:47:50 --> 00:47:54
			If it was any other man, if he

00:47:54 --> 00:47:57
			was in that situation, he would tell his

00:47:57 --> 00:48:00
			wife who would give him such a suggestion,

00:48:01 --> 00:48:05
			be quiet, mind your own business, let me

00:48:05 --> 00:48:06
			think about it, I don't like your idea,

00:48:08 --> 00:48:08
			etc.

00:48:09 --> 00:48:09
			Right?

00:48:10 --> 00:48:14
			But we see even though he was the

00:48:14 --> 00:48:19
			Messenger of Allah, even though he has the

00:48:19 --> 00:48:22
			authority to do as he wishes.

00:48:23 --> 00:48:26
			When it came to this advice, he took

00:48:26 --> 00:48:30
			it and he implemented it and he did

00:48:30 --> 00:48:32
			not reject the advice that Umm Salama رضي

00:48:32 --> 00:48:37
			الله عنها gave and so as a result

00:48:37 --> 00:48:39
			of taking her advice, we see how a

00:48:39 --> 00:48:42
			very tense situation was diffused.

00:48:44 --> 00:48:47
			Umm Salama رضي الله عنها she went on

00:48:47 --> 00:48:52
			to narrate close to 400 Ahadith.

00:48:52 --> 00:48:56
			So she was only second to Aisha رضي

00:48:56 --> 00:49:00
			الله عنها but then again there is no

00:49:00 --> 00:49:01
			comparison.

00:49:01 --> 00:49:03
			We mentioned when we spoke about Aisha رضي

00:49:03 --> 00:49:08
			الله عنها that she narrated almost 2000 something

00:49:08 --> 00:49:12
			Ahadith and here the only one behind her

00:49:12 --> 00:49:19
			is Umm Salama who narrated some 378 Ahadith

00:49:21 --> 00:49:25
			and she like Aisha رضي الله عنها was

00:49:25 --> 00:49:29
			one of the leading companions whom other companions

00:49:30 --> 00:49:33
			the likes of Ibn Abbas would go to

00:49:33 --> 00:49:38
			her to ask her questions and seek knowledge

00:49:38 --> 00:49:44
			from her and ask her questions and fatwa

00:49:44 --> 00:49:45
			and so on and so forth.

00:49:47 --> 00:49:50
			So like Aisha رضي الله عنها Umm Salama

00:49:51 --> 00:49:56
			was a beacon of light, of knowledge that

00:49:56 --> 00:49:58
			people used to come to her to hear

00:49:58 --> 00:50:01
			Ahadith from her and to take knowledge from

00:50:01 --> 00:50:01
			her.

00:50:02 --> 00:50:04
			And also like Aisha رضي الله عنها Umm

00:50:04 --> 00:50:08
			Salama was very inquisitive.

00:50:09 --> 00:50:14
			She would ask the Prophet ﷺ questions like

00:50:14 --> 00:50:17
			Aisha رضي الله عنها and as a result

00:50:17 --> 00:50:18
			we have learned so much.

00:50:19 --> 00:50:22
			We mentioned this with regards to Aisha رضي

00:50:22 --> 00:50:24
			الله عنها that if she was not so

00:50:24 --> 00:50:28
			inquisitive, if she didn't ask the kind of

00:50:28 --> 00:50:30
			questions that she asked there are things we

00:50:30 --> 00:50:31
			would not have learned.

00:50:32 --> 00:50:34
			And the same can be said about Umm

00:50:34 --> 00:50:34
			Salama.

00:50:34 --> 00:50:39
			One example was actually an ayah that Allah

00:50:39 --> 00:50:42
			revealed as a result of Umm Salama asking

00:50:42 --> 00:50:43
			a question.

00:50:44 --> 00:50:47
			So one day she asked the Prophet ﷺ

00:50:48 --> 00:50:53
			Why have men been mentioned and addressed by

00:50:53 --> 00:50:53
			Allah in the Quran?

00:50:55 --> 00:50:56
			But not as women.

00:50:59 --> 00:51:04
			Throughout the Quran Allah addresses men those who

00:51:06 --> 00:51:11
			do righteous good deeds and they do x,

00:51:12 --> 00:51:14
			y, and z they will get such and

00:51:14 --> 00:51:18
			such reward like jihad and so on and

00:51:18 --> 00:51:18
			so forth.

00:51:19 --> 00:51:22
			And in one narration she specifically asked about

00:51:22 --> 00:51:25
			jihad that why is it that men get

00:51:25 --> 00:51:27
			to go for jihad and get all of

00:51:27 --> 00:51:28
			this reward but not the women.

00:51:30 --> 00:51:32
			So the Prophet ﷺ did not say anything

00:51:33 --> 00:51:37
			and then Allah ﷻ revealed an ayah.

00:51:38 --> 00:51:41
			Allah revealed an ayah and Umm Salama she

00:51:41 --> 00:51:44
			says she was at home one day and

00:51:44 --> 00:51:47
			she was combing her hair and she heard

00:51:47 --> 00:51:50
			the Prophet ﷺ addressing the people in the

00:51:50 --> 00:51:50
			masjid.

00:51:51 --> 00:51:54
			As we know the houses, the apartments of

00:51:54 --> 00:51:56
			the wives of the Prophet ﷺ were attached

00:51:56 --> 00:52:00
			to the masjid with only a curtain separating

00:52:00 --> 00:52:01
			them from the masjid.

00:52:01 --> 00:52:03
			So she heard the Prophet ﷺ addressing the

00:52:03 --> 00:52:07
			Muslims saying that the following has been revealed

00:52:07 --> 00:52:07
			to me.

00:52:08 --> 00:52:10
			And this is the ayah in Surah Al

00:52:10 --> 00:52:15
			-Ahzab in Surah Al-Ahzab verse 35 Allah

00:52:15 --> 00:52:37
			ﷻ says Allah

00:52:37 --> 00:52:37
00:52:37 --> 00:52:47
			says

00:52:49 --> 00:52:54
			For both Muslim men and women believing men

00:52:54 --> 00:52:59
			and women devout men and women truthful men

00:52:59 --> 00:53:04
			and women patient men and women humble men

00:53:04 --> 00:53:08
			and women gentle men and women charitable, generous

00:53:08 --> 00:53:14
			men and women fasting men and women men

00:53:14 --> 00:53:18
			and women who guard their chastity and men

00:53:18 --> 00:53:22
			and women who remember Allah ﷻ often for

00:53:22 --> 00:53:25
			all of them Allah ﷻ has prepared forgiveness

00:53:26 --> 00:53:28
			and a great reward.

00:53:30 --> 00:53:33
			And so women are the counterparts of men.

00:53:33 --> 00:53:37
			They share with them in all the rulings

00:53:37 --> 00:53:41
			of Islam except those that are specific to

00:53:41 --> 00:53:42
			either gender.

00:53:43 --> 00:53:45
			So for example jihad this is specific for

00:53:45 --> 00:53:45
			men.

00:53:47 --> 00:53:51
			However in the Qur'an when Allah ﷻ

00:53:51 --> 00:53:57
			addresses the believers it often comes directed towards

00:53:57 --> 00:54:02
			men and that's mainly because of the language.

00:54:03 --> 00:54:09
			Not to indicate that rulings are exclusive to

00:54:09 --> 00:54:13
			men without including women.

00:54:15 --> 00:54:18
			So when Allah ﷻ says those who do

00:54:18 --> 00:54:22
			such and such this is the masculine form

00:54:22 --> 00:54:27
			and the feminine form of that is In

00:54:27 --> 00:54:32
			English we say those but in Arabic each

00:54:32 --> 00:54:35
			one has a specific word for it.

00:54:37 --> 00:54:39
			And in the Qur'an in order to

00:54:39 --> 00:54:43
			maintain this uniformity of language Allah ﷻ just

00:54:43 --> 00:54:46
			addresses using the masculine form.

00:54:47 --> 00:54:49
			So she thought it means that Allah ﷻ

00:54:49 --> 00:54:51
			is only addressing men and not addressing women

00:54:52 --> 00:54:55
			so Allah ﷻ reveals this ayah and this

00:54:55 --> 00:54:57
			is how he responds to this question of

00:54:57 --> 00:54:59
			Umm Salama and this is how she was

00:54:59 --> 00:55:02
			honoured by Allah ﷻ by having an entire

00:55:02 --> 00:55:07
			ayah revealed in response to her query.

00:55:11 --> 00:55:14
			Umm Salama r.a she went on to

00:55:14 --> 00:55:16
			live a very very long life.

00:55:17 --> 00:55:21
			In fact she was the last of the

00:55:21 --> 00:55:23
			Ummahatul Mu'mineen to pass away.

00:55:24 --> 00:55:26
			Even though some of them were younger than

00:55:26 --> 00:55:33
			her like Aisha and Hafsa but she went

00:55:33 --> 00:55:36
			on to outlive them and so she passed

00:55:36 --> 00:55:42
			away after the Khilafah of Muawiyah it was

00:55:42 --> 00:55:48
			now the Khilafah of his son Yazid ibn

00:55:48 --> 00:55:52
			Muawiyah and she passed away in the year

00:55:52 --> 00:55:55
			64 of the Hijrah and so this put

00:55:55 --> 00:55:58
			her in the 80s or close to being

00:55:58 --> 00:56:03
			90 years of age and so it was

00:56:03 --> 00:56:06
			Abu Hurairah r.a who prayed her Janazah

00:56:06 --> 00:56:12
			and she was buried in the graveyard of

00:56:12 --> 00:56:18
			Baqi' r.a and may Allah be pleased

00:56:18 --> 00:56:22
			with all of the Ummahatul Mu'mineen the mothers

00:56:22 --> 00:56:25
			of the believers and so this is where

00:56:25 --> 00:56:27
			we'll stop for today
