Kamil Ahmad – Parables of the Quran Class #1
AI: Summary ©
The segment discusses various paraphrases and lessons from the Bible, including the importance of not returning to the truth and accepting the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. The speakers emphasize the need to show confidence in Islam and show the people their true understanding of the Prophet's teachings to avoid confusion and distrust. The importance of showing confidence in Islam is also highlighted, particularly in light of the impact of heavy rain and lightning strikes on individuals's lives and health.

And so the purpose of
Allah giving us these amthal, these parables, is
for us to try to understand them, to
contemplate them, to reflect over them, and so
on.
And having said that, basically this series is
a series in which we are actually going
through the tafsir of the Qur'an, right?
But not just tafsir, but also tadabbur, right?
So tafsir of the Qur'an means the
meanings of the Qur'an, right?
An explanation of the meanings.
This is what Allah said, this is what
He means by His words.
Tadabbur is where you then not only understand
the meanings but you go further than that,
you go deep into the meanings by reflecting
over them, contemplating over them, extracting these gems
from the words of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
And so we're going to try to do
both.
We're going to understand what is Allah saying
and at the same time also reflect deeply
into these words of Allah.
And so we begin today as we mentioned
last week, the way we're going to be
going through these parables is as they have
been mentioned in the order in the Qur
'an.
So we're going to start from the first
parables that Allah mentions which are in Surah
Al-Baqarah.
Today we're going to cover two parables and
they actually come together.
They come together in the Qur'an and
both of these parables are related to the
munafiqun, the hypocrites and their lack of benefit
from the revelation, their lack of benefit from
the wahi of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And so we have two parables here.
The first is related to fire and light
and the second parable is related to water
or rain, a rainstorm and thunders and lightning.
So first we go through the first parable.
We first go through the first parable.
This is basically the very first parable is
where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in
Surah Al-Baqarah verse 17 and 18.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, Now
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala begins Surah Al
-Baqarah by mentioning three categories of people.
The mu'minun, the people of iman and Allah
mentions them in the first five ayat of
the Qur'an or of Surah Al-Baqarah.
He mentions them in five verses.
And then Allah mentions the kuffar, the disbelievers.
And that is in the next two verses.
So first Allah mentions the characteristics of the
believers in five verses.
Then he mentions the disbelievers, the kuffar in
two verses.
Then the third group are the munafiqun, the
hypocrites.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala mentions them
in the next 13 verses.
So the first group are the believers who
inwardly and outwardly, you know, they are believers.
Inwardly and outwardly.
And then Allah mentions the kuffar who are
inwardly and outwardly disbelievers.
And then you have this third group and
they are the munafiqun who disbelieved inwardly but
showed belief outward.
They showed their Islam outwardly.
Why did Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala emphasize
on this group more than the first two
groups?
The first group, the believers, five ayat.
The disbelievers, two ayat.
And then 13 verses just on the munafiqun.
Why?
Exactly.
The believers, we know them because, you know,
what they claim outwardly is what is in
their hearts.
The same thing with the disbelievers.
But here you have a people who you
cannot tell, right?
They're showing one thing but they're hiding something
else.
And so because of their grave danger and
because few people can recognize them, Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala talks about them the most.
So what is this parable about?
So it is about the true nature and
the reality of the hypocrites.
And so Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala brings
this parable at the end after all of
these ayat talking about the munafiqun.
At the end, He mentions this parable as
if to summarize who these people are, who
they are.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, their example
is like someone who kindles a fire.
Their example is
like one who kindles a fire, ignites a
fire.
Then
when everything around him is lit up, I
mean he could see because he ignites his
fire, it was dark.
Now it's no longer dark because of the
light of the fire.
All of a sudden, Allah takes away their
light.
Allah takes away their light.
Leaving them in
darkness, unable to see anything.
And then Allah says,
They are deaf, dumb and blind
and so they will never return.
Meaning, they will never return to iman and
the truth.
So here, Allah compares these people, the Munafiqun,
to a person who is out let's say
in the wilderness and it's dark, he can't
see anything.
And he wants someone to ignite a fire
for him.
For what purpose?
So he could see, right?
And then when it's ignited, the light turns
off and he is left in darkness unable
to see a thing.
This is because the Munafiqun, they entered Islam.
They mixed with the Muslims.
They benefited from the light of iman, right?
But since the light did not penetrate their
hearts, Allah took it away.
So they benefited from the light for some
time but a very, very brief moment.
A very, very brief moment.
And that was only because of the believers
around them.
So the light of iman was illuminated for
them, right?
Notice, they asked for it.
They sought, they asked for light to be,
for a fire to be kindled.
So it didn't belong to them, right?
It did not belong to them.
Likewise, the light of iman that they were
benefiting from, it was not their own.
It was that of the believers.
And so through this light, the truth came
to them.
They were able to distinguish between truth and
falsehood.
They knew what is right and what is
wrong, right?
They learnt everything about Islam.
They know everything.
They see the truth in front of their
eyes clearly.
But instead, they chose to prefer falsehood over
the truth.
And so they concealed kufr in their hearts.
So as a result, they were stripped of
this light.
As a result, they were stripped of this
light.
But notice here, how Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala did not say, He didn't say, ذهب
So initially, Allah says that, you
know, their example is like a man who
kindles a fire.
He asks for fire to be lit for
him.
And then when everything around him is illuminated,
Allah takes away their light.
He didn't say Allah takes away their fire.
Alright?
The scholars mentioned the reason for this is
because with light there is benefit.
But with fire, there is destruction.
And so Allah took away the light, but
left them with the fire.
Allah took away the light, but left them
with the fire.
And so the munafiqoon in the akhira, they
won't have light, but they will have the
fire.
And that's why some scholars of tafsir, they
say that this example is the state of
the munafiqoon in this dunya, as we mentioned.
But other scholars say that this refers to
their state on the day of judgment.
Meaning, in the dunya, they were in light.
They were surrounded by the believers, right?
Then when they die, you know, the reality
hits them, and they go into total darkness.
They go into total darkness.
So as a result, they were stripped of
this light at a time when they needed
it the most.
And this is supported by what Allah tells
us in surah al-hadeed.
The light that the believers will have on
the day of judgment.
On the day of judgment, the believers will
have light.
On the day of judgment, the believers will
have light that will help them.
To make it to jannah.
And then Allah says, On
that day, the hypocrites, men and women, they
will say to the believers, Wait.
Wait for us.
So that we can have some of your
light.
It will be said to them, Go back
and look for light.
Meaning, go back to the dunya.
That is where you'll find the light.
Right?
So, this tells us that, you know, this
ayah could be applying to the munafiqun in
the akhirah.
Where Allah takes away their light.
Where Allah takes away their light from them.
And so this is the case of these
hypocrites, who see clearly.
They can see the truth clearly, and then
they become blind.
They believe and then they disbelieve.
They enter into Islam, then they leave it
never to return to it.
And that's why Allah ends by saying, They
are deaf, they are blind.
They cannot speak.
And so they will never return.
Meaning, they're never going to come back to
the truth.
They're never going to come back to Iman.
Why?
Because these people are blind, and they are
deaf, and they are dumb.
Right?
Dumb refers to a person who cannot speak.
Because the truth, the truth is only one
of three things.
Something that is heard, something that is seen,
or something that is spoken.
Right?
Or something that is thought of.
Right?
Another reason why these people will never return
to the truth, is because when someone considers
something to be good and right, like these
hypocrites, it's highly unlikely that they're going to
leave it.
So they believe that, you know, Kufr is
the way to go.
Right?
They have seen both Iman and Kufr.
Right?
And so when someone has been through it,
and he's seen it all, and then he
chooses, and then he chooses Kufr over Iman,
it's highly unlikely that he's going to come
back to Iman.
This is different than someone who hasn't been
exposed to the truth to begin with.
Right?
Someone who hasn't been exposed to Islam, you
know, like the majority or many of the
Kufar, who have not been exposed to Islam.
If you were to sit down and teach
them about Islam, there's a good chance that
it'll make sense to them and they'll accept.
Right?
But not with regards to these hypocrites.
And that's why Allah says, and so they
will never return.
So they will never return.
And so they entered into Islam outwardly, and
then they left it.
And elsewhere Allah tells us that they actually,
they actually accepted Iman.
Right?
Elsewhere Allah tells us that they actually accepted
Iman.
Allah says about the hypocrites, that was because
they believed and then they disbelieved.
And so Allah sealed their hearts.
And so this Iman here refers to them
being exposed to the truth, and accepting it
outwardly.
Or perhaps they actually did accept Iman inwardly,
but then they quickly rejected it.
They quickly rejected it.
And so this is the first parable.
Let's mention a few lessons that we learned
from this parable.
The first lesson that we learned from this
parable is that
Iman is like light.
Iman is like light in its clarity and
its tranquility.
Unlike Kufr and Nifaq.
And this is how Allah describes Iman and
Kufr throughout the Qur'an.
Allah describes Iman as being light, and Kufr
as being darkness.
And so compare two people.
One who is traveling in the daytime when
it's broad daylight.
He's easily able to travel with no difficulty.
And someone who travels at night when it's
all dark.
The second lesson that we learned from this
parable is that Iman never remains in the
heart of a hypocrite.
It doesn't settle into his heart.
And so notice how here Allah says that
the light illuminated around them.
When there was light
illuminated around him.
So it didn't enter into him.
It was just surrounding him.
Right?
It was just surrounding him.
Just like this hypocrite, he is living among
the believers.
He is surrounded by the light.
But it doesn't penetrate into his heart.
And so there's a difference between Iman entering
one's heart and settling there versus those who
claim to be Muslims.
But Iman does not penetrate their hearts.
Iman does not penetrate their hearts.
And that's why Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la said about some people who claimed
to be believers.
And these were the Bedouins in Surah Al
-Hujurat.
Allah says about them, قُلَّ What does Allah
say?
The Bedouins
said, we have believed.
Allah says, no.
Allah says, say to them, O Muhammad, no.
You have not believed.
But rather you have simply become Muslims.
Islam is outward.
And Allah says, Iman has not penetrated into
your hearts.
That's because when Iman penetrates the heart, it's
highly unlikely or very difficult for a person
to then abandon it.
And that's why we have in the famous
incident of Heraclius, the emperor of Rome, when
he met Abu Sufyan.
And he asked him several questions because he
wanted to know if Muhammad ﷺ was indeed
a true messenger sent by Allah.
And he had knowledge of the scripture.
He was a Christian.
And he knew the signs of a true
prophet.
So he asked him certain questions.
At the end, he says to Abu Sufyan,
I asked you such and such because I
wanted to know such and such.
So he says, I asked you whether there
was anyone who after embracing this religion became
displeased and abandoned it and left it.
And you said no.
And this is a sign of true Iman.
When its delight, when its pleasure enters the
heart and mixes with it completely, nobody can
be displeased and dissatisfied with it.
As for these Munafiqun, it didn't penetrate their
hearts to begin with.
Right?
If it did, it would have been a
different story.
And that is basically the story of the
Sahaba.
When Iman settled into their hearts, they became
what they became.
And the third lesson that we learn here
is the danger of Nifaq.
One of its dangers is that Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala will abandon you.
That Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will abandon
you.
As Allah says,
Allah took away their light
and then left them in darknesses, unable to
see a thing.
And so, one of the dangers of this
disease of hypocrisy is that Allah will leave
you to yourself.
Right?
And this is not due to injustice on
the part of Allah.
But rather, it's as a result of what
they did.
You know, it's as a result of their
initiative.
Whenever Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala punishes anyone,
whether it be in this life or in
the next, it is never unjust.
But rather, it is because they deserved it
and they're the ones who initiated it.
You know, it's as they say, you reap
what you sow.
You reap what you sow.
Whatever you do, it comes back to haunt
you.
We move on after
that to the next parable.
And this is in the very next ayah.
This is in the next ayah.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
The next two ayat, verses 19
and 20 Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says
or, so we're done with the first parable
Allah then gives a second parable Allah says
or, their example is like a person who
is caught in a rainstorm heavy downpouring of
rain from the sky but this rain, it
comes with darkness and thunder and lightning they
put their fingers in their ears at the
sound of every thunder out of fear of
death out of fear of death وَاللَّهُ مُحِيطٌ
بِالكَافِرِينَ and Allah encompasses the disbelievers then Allah
says it is as if the lightning was
about to * away their sight you know,
they're so afraid they don't want to look
at the lightning because it's gonna, it could
make them blind whenever lightning strikes they walk
in its light but then when darkness covers
them they stand still they stop if Allah
had willed He could have taken away their
hearing and their sight surely Allah is most
capable of doing everything so Ibn Qayyim when
he mentions these two parables he says the
first one is المثَل الناري the parable of
fire and this one he refers to it
as المثَل المائي the parable of water so
here Allah compares the منافقون to someone who
is outside in the dark night and there
is heavy rain and there is thunder and
there's lightning out of fear and because of
his weak nature, he's weak he puts his
fingers into his ears and he covers his
eyes he's afraid that lightning is gonna strike
him and this is how these منافقون are
they're afraid they're cowards here the heavy rain
refers to the Qur'an just like rain
revives the dead earth likewise this Qur'an
revives the dead hearts the Qur'an is
life for the hearts just like rain and
water is life for the ground but who
will benefit from that?
from that water?
only the believers they're the ones who truly
benefit from the ayaat of the Qur'an
so here you have rain falling this resembles
the ayaat of the Qur'an coming down
from Allah who benefits from that?
the believers as for the hypocrites they hear
and they see all of this but they
don't benefit from it they don't benefit from
it and so this is similar to how
light came to them in the other parable
they had light but they didn't benefit from
the light it didn't go into their hearts
or they benefited it momentarily and then Allah
took it away so it came quickly but
it didn't settle in their hearts and so
these people are struck they're attacked by thunder
and lightning and this thunder and lightning resembles
the warnings in the Qur'an the threats
of punishment in the Qur'an the arguments
of the Qur'an when they hear them
it's like thunderbolts because of how severe these
warnings are and they have to hear it
because they're living among the believers it's not
like a kafir who has nothing to do
with the Muslims these people are living among
the believers so they're hearing the Qur'an
day in day out but because they don't
have iman in their hearts they don't like
what they're hearing right?
and this is due to their weakness and
that's why in the example Allah says they
put their ears they put their fingers in
their ears they don't want to hear it
it disturbs them it bothers them the munafiqun
likewise when they hear this Qur'an it
bothers them because they know that this is
the truth they recognize that this is the
truth but they've chosen to disbelieve now some
scholars say that this parable of the munafiqun
is about those who are hesitant and swaying
back and forth between iman and kufr as
إِلَهَ أُولَى وَلا إِلَهَ أُولَى they're swaying between
the two camps of iman and kufr they
are not from this group nor are they
from that group yes they are kuffar but
outwardly they are not with the kuffar and
this resembles how Allah tells us here in
this parable that when the lightning comes down
there's light so what do they do?
they take a step forward they walk وَإِذَا
أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا but then when there's no
lightning it becomes dark they stand still this
is how these munafiqun are they're constantly wavering
uncertain hesitant now other scholars like Shaykh Ibn
Uthaymeen they say that this parable refers to
the hypocrites who were not believers to begin
with they were not Muslims to begin with
like the hypocrites of the Jews in Medina
he says Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen says so they
never tasted iman to begin with but they
made Islam apparent out of fear of the
Prophet ﷺ after the battle of Badr so
when the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina migrated
there were these Jews and they openly opposed
him but then when he was victorious in
the very first battle against his enemies the
battle of Badr now they were afraid now
what's going to happen to them and this
is also when the other munafiqun the munafiqun
of the Arabs in Medina this is when
they started to go underground after the battle
of Badr so he says this is why
Allah refers to them being in darkness here
with no light right they are in darkness
with no light whatsoever on the other hand
the previous parable the previous parable referred to
those hypocrites who were between iman and kufr
which is why they had light and then
it was taken away from them they had
light and then it was taken away from
them as we mentioned Allah says in surah
al-munafiqun اَمَنُوا ثُمَّ كَفَعُوا that was because
they believed and then they disbelieved and Allah
knows best so these are the two parables
just a few lessons from the second parable
first of all we learn here that the
hypocrites the munafiqun always live in fear and
worry they're never content they're always
stressed out they're always afraid as Allah describes
them in many places in the Qur'an
and so for example Allah says in surah
danger comes when fear comes you see them
staring at you with their eyes rolling like
someone who is overcome by death that's how
fearful they are and Allah says يَحْسَبُونَ in
think that every cry is against them every
time they hear something they think that's it
you know we're gonna be exposed they're coming
to get us هُمُ الْعَدُوُ فَاحْذَرْهُمْ they are
the enemy so beware of them so they're
constantly living in fear and that's because they're
cowards right because if you don't believe then
show it show that you don't believe why
don't they show it because they're afraid of
what's gonna happen to them they live among
the believers they live among the believers they
claim that they are one of them and
so this fear and this worry it only
has one cure and that is the cure
of iman that is the cure of iman
once a person has iman that's it whatever
he fears it goes away whatever he fears
it goes away as Allah says about those
those who believe and you know their hearts
find comfort in the dhikr of Allah in
the remembrance of Allah what does Allah tell
us about the munafiqoon that rarely do they
rarely remember Allah do the dhikr of Allah
the second lesson that we learn is that
the the ayat of the Qur'an and
you know the arguments of the Qur'an
and the warnings of the Qur'an are
like thunder for the hypocrites they come down
striking on them and so it is our
duty to make the truth clear to the
people by using the Qur'an and its
strong proofs and arguments because these are the
words of Allah these are not the words
of any human being and so they are
like a piercing sword or a thunderbolt and
that's why Allah commands the Prophet ﷺ to
use this Qur'an to fight against them
listen to the disbelievers and fight against them
strive diligently against them with this Qur'an
with this Qur'an so there is no
greater tool in our hands to give dawah
to the kuffar besides the Qur'an and
even those who have made up their minds
right even those who have made up their
minds like these munafiqun use the Qur'an
recite it for them because it comes down
on them like thunderbolts and finally the last
lesson that we'll mention is that Allah encompasses
everything in his creation and nothing escapes him
and nothing escapes his knowledge and that's why
Allah ends the ayah by saying
Allah encompasses the disbelievers and so what
this does is that it makes the believers
firm when you know that Allah encompasses the
kuffar what does that mean by the way
that Allah encompasses the kuffar we spoke about
this when we mentioned Allah's name مُحِيط right
المحيط Allah is المحيط so what does it
mean that Allah encompasses the kuffar so he
has full knowledge of these people no matter
what they do no matter what plots they
devise no matter what schemes and plans of
theirs they're trying you know in their war
against Islam and the Muslims Allah is well
aware of it all so this makes the
heart of the believer content and at rest
and at peace while the munafiq the hypocrite
if he was to hear this that Allah
is مُحِيطٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ this strikes further fear in
his heart and it also makes him lose
hope right because you know Allah surrounding the
disbelievers it means they cannot escape him Ibn
Kathir he says Ibn Kathir in his tafsir
he says meaning this means that their fear
or their caution will not benefit them in
any way right because what did they say
or what did Allah say about them يَجْعَلُونَ
put their fingers in their ears out of
fear of death right the one who is
out in the wilderness and he's afraid of
these thunderbolts Allah says he puts his fingers
in his ears out of fear of death
and the munafiqoon likewise they're afraid that's why
they don't want to listen to the Qur
'an right so Ibn Kathir says meaning that
this fear and this caution will not benefit
them in any way for Allah encompasses them
with his power and they are under his
will and his decree so look at how
Allah ends the ayah after mentioning this about
these people that they put their fingers in
their ears Allah says do that all you
want Allah encompasses you there's nowhere to escape
there is nowhere to escape and so these
two parables they teach us a lot about
the nature of the munafiqoon the hypocrites and
their true colors and how you know they
are cowards in the end of the day
and how them living among the Muslims will
not benefit them not in this life nor
in the next and so we ask Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala to you know keep
our hearts firm upon Iman and we seek
his refuge from hypocrisy and nifaq and kufr
and this is where we'll stop for today
insha'Allah every week insha'Allah we'll try
to take two parables from the Qur'an
insha'Allah along with these lessons bi-idhnillahi
ta'ala are there any questions?
no some of them yeah some of them
after the battle of Badr some of them
joined the munafiqoon yeah and they showed that
they had accepted Islam basically
there were two types of munafiqoon so one
that Iman never entered their hearts to begin
with and another who Iman did enter their
hearts but then it quickly left so obviously
the munafiqoon are not all the same the
end result is the same where in the
end they gave up Iman totally but there
were different grades and different kinds so you
had the munafiqoon who are like Shaykh Uthaymeen
mentions from among the Jews that's one kind
and then you have the munafiqoon who like
Abdullah Ibn Ubay the head of the munafiqoon
of Medina you know complete kuffar right from
day one and then you have others who
were unsure right and so they entered into
Islam Iman did enter their hearts but then
they quickly left it and so you have
grades and shades of different kinds of munafiqoon
but in the end they ended up you
know having kuffar in their hearts it
refers to those who Iman entered their hearts
and then they left and that's why Allah
says فَهُمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ they're not going to
come back to it they're not going to
return to it and we're going to be
coming across another parable soon in Surah Al
-Baqarah where Allah ends the ayah in a
لَا يَعْقِلُونَ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ that they don't
understand right and that ayah is talking about
the kuffar that is a parable Allah mentions
regarding the kafir who doesn't respond to the
da'wah so Allah doesn't say فَهُمْ لَا
يَرْجِعُونَ because they didn't have iman to begin
with but here with regards to the munafiqun
they had iman to begin with so they
won't return to it it
could be but here it seems yeah
I mean this doesn't mention like there's no
indication of this ayah talking about the victory
of the believers but you do have other
ayat like the one I mentioned in surah
al-ahzab فَإِذَا جَاءَ الْخَوْثُ right and other
ayat in surah al-imran and in surah
al-tawbah as well where they're fearful that
they're going to be exposed and they're also
they dislike the victory of the believers but
here in this ayah it seems that Allah
is talking about the Quran right and the
ayat coming to them and that's what they
don't like to hear so
the question is what does it mean that
when there's light they walk in it and
when it's dark they stop basically as I
mentioned that these kinds of munafiqun are hesitant
and wavering and their heart is not like
settled on one thing so when there's light
they walk in it they benefit from the
iman or perhaps they accept iman and then
when it's dark they go back to kufr
so they're between the two as Allah says
regarding the first parable we mentioned that on
the day of judgment the munafiqun will not
have any light rather they will want to
have from the light of the believers now
the believers everyone will have light to the
extent of their iman so with some their
light is going to be very strong that's
symbolic of their iman with others their light
is going to be very dim flickering that
shows the weakness of their iman but still
they have light still they do have light
so it doesn't refer to the hypocrite who
has zero light to begin with not
really because the very definition of a munafiq
is one who has zero iman in his
heart we're talking about the munafiq who dies
as a munafiq we're not talking about how
he was in his life so in his
life there could have been times when he
had iman and then he went back to
kufr as Allah says they had iman then
they went back to kufr so we're not
talking about that we're talking about how do
they die so a munafiq who dies with
zero iman in his heart he's not going
to have any light on the day of
judgement those who have weak light it refers
to the weak believers so we'll stop here
inshallah and next week we'll move on to
another two parables wa
salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
