Guidelines for Newly Practicing Muslims

There are many born Muslims who come from Muslim backgrounds and Muslim families, but only later on in life start practicing Islam. Many of them are no different than new Muslims who convert to Islam.
Lecture delivered at Abu Huraira Center in Toronto.

Bismillah Alhamdulillah wa Salatu was Salam ala rasulillah while early he was so happy he ultramarine and now that
Allah subhanho wa Taala he tells us
about
the darkness that many people live in.
And so Allah subhanho wa Taala says, Oh COVID lomatin
fie bahauddin Lord Jean yahoomail john menfolk, Li Mo john infoq Lisa hap,
Allah subhanho wa Taala describes
the depths of this darkness. And so Allah subhanho wa Taala says
that their deeds the deeds of the kuffaar are like
darknesses and so here Allah subhanho wa Taala describes darkness as plural,
not singular Luma
Luma is plural.
And so lots of Hannah who attalla says darknesses like a deep vast ocean,
like a deep vast ocean.
And this darkness is covered by waves upon waves.
And then above these waves are clouds. And then Allah subhanho wa Taala says, Voodoo
voodoo magic and Babu have Okada. darknesses. One or top of the other. Either Raja Yoda who, yummy aka Dr. Raja. If he was to stretch his hand, he would barely be able to see it. And then Allah subhanho wa Taala concludes the ayah when Lamia jalila, hula hula run from Allah.
And whoever Allah does not make for him light with which he can see, then he will have no light.
My dear brothers and sisters,
there are many brothers and sisters, perhaps some of us are among those who experienced such darkness in their lives.
And so it is as if they are in such a deep ocean
in a dark night,
darkness upon darkness.
And these people, we can basically divide them into two groups,
the kuffaar
who lived such lives of darkness, until they were guided to Islam.
This is one group. The second group are
those Muslims
who were born into Muslim families, they come from a Muslim background.
But they were not brought up upon the deen.
And they lived a life similar to lives of the kafar. And so they witnessed and experienced the same kind of darkness.
And so they are out there in that ocean.
And in such an ocean,
the only rescue boat
is that of Islam.
And the only light
that is there for them is the light of Islam, which is on this boat.
So some people Allah subhanho wa Taala guides them out of such darknesses and shows them the light
and so the rescue ship comes to them.
And there are people on this boat
these people are the Muslims who Allah has guided from among the scholars the righteous from among the do heart the callers the preachers from among the unbanked
and so
in such times, what are they supposed to do? They're supposed to stretch out their hands
and not let go of them. When they have come seeking that guidance. We have to put out our hands for them.
Now
there are many guidance for new Muslims.
There are many programs out there for those who converted to Islam. And
and so we have various programs for them. There are books for them. New Muslim guides, there are you know, DVDs. There's all sorts of material out there to help the new Muslim the one
Who will becomes a Muslim after having been a Catholic, who knows nothing, and who has to start from zero.
However, the sad reality is that we don't have anything
for the second group.
And they are those brothers and sisters of ours,
who found the guidance, who Allah subhanho wa Taala guided to see the light of guidance.
And so they consider themselves to be new word Muslims, they consider themselves to be newly practicing Muslims, we have nothing out there for them. We have nothing out there for them. And so they see guidance. They want to know, what do I do now? How do I start on this new life of mine.
And so I wanted to dedicate this Hanukkah tonight for them, and for all of us, so that we could help such people, we could not only show the guidance to others, but also once we have shown it to them, once a loss of heroin with that has guided their hearts to help them after that, on this new life of theirs. And so inshallah we're gonna, you know, mention a few guidelines for these newly practicing Muslims, and a few pieces of advice. But
the first point that I wanted to mention
the first point that I wanted to mention.
And this is a reminder for each and every single one of us, not only for the candidate who becomes a Muslim, not only for those newly practicing Muslims, but for me and for you and for each and every single one of us. Remember, that this guidance, that was a parent who has guided each and every single one of us to
to be upon his straight path,
leading to his pleasure and to his agenda.
This guidance
was not
as a result of our own efforts.
Don't think
that you were guided because you sought the guidance.
Don't think that you were guided,
because you found that guidance. Rather, you have to realize that this guidance is nothing but
a favor and a blessing of a loss of Hannah who would die upon you, nothing more.
It is nothing but a favor and a blessing of Allah subhanho wa Taala.
And so there is no greater piece of advice that I could give to anyone to any Muslim.
Then for him to realize that him being upon the deen
and steadfast upon it
is because a lot chose you
is because of our favorite view over everyone else. And that's why
on the Day of Judgment,
when the inhabitants of gender will enter agenda,
what will they say?
We'll call Hamdulillah, Hilary Hagana, leha
Wanaka, Lena, dia, Lola and Hagen Allah,
the people of gender they will say All praise belongs to Allah subhanahu wa tada The one who guided us through this had he not been for his guidance, we would never have been guided.
And so,
one should not think of himself as being something great.
Rather, he should humble himself. And so, the very, very beginning
on the start of your path of guidance, you need to realize this, that this guidance was as a result of a law favoring you and choosing you not because of any other reason. Once you understand that and realize that the rest of the path and the rest of your journey will become easier for you.
And that brings us to the second point and once again this is for each and every single one of us that after Allah subhanahu wa tada has guided each and every single one of us.
Once we realize that this guidance is as a result of Allah subhanho wa tada
Who should we turn to? To keep us firm upon that guidance? None other than Allah subhanho wa Tada.
And so we should constantly always be asking the loss of Hannah who with data to keep us firm upon the dean
forever until the day we meet him somehow know what data
This is what Allah subhanho wa Taala wants from us. Yeah, you handed in an otaku. Allaha haka Ducati. What are the Mouton Illa? Were anonymously moon
do not die except in a state of Islam.
But how will we be able to do that?
By asking Allah Subhana Who is
the one who in His hands are the hearts of each and every single human being?
And so, if you were to be walking out on the street
and you come across someone walking his dog
and his dog, he goes out of control.
What are you going to do?
Who are you going to talk to?
You're going to talk to the owner, tell him to bring that dog under control. Similarly, likewise,
all of our hearts are in the hands of Allah subhana wa Tada. So who else should we ask to keep these hearts in control, to keep these hearts firm upon his Deen and upon the straight path.
And this is what the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said when he said
that the hearts of each and every single son of Adam are between two of the fingers of man.
He turns these hearts as he wishes.
And so,
you know, we should be fearful of this.
That yesterday you were Muslim, today you are upon the guidance that Allah has guided you to.
But you never know.
That guidance can turn back into misguidance.
And so we should turn to Allah subhanho wa Taala. constantly asking him to make us firm and make our hearts firm upon his thing. That's why the prophet SAW Selim as mentioned by onsala, one of his wives rhodiola and her
she said that one of the most common the eyes of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was
yamaka label crude a bit kalbi, Allah Diedrich. Oh Turner of the hearts keep my heart firm upon your deen.
This is the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
the best of mankind. The one who was chosen by Allah subhanho wa Taala.
The one who knew he was upon guidance, and Allah would never betray him would never lead him astray. And yet, this was the most common do out of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. So how about us
after that,
we have to turn to Allah subhanho wa tada
in sincere repentance.
And so once a loss of Hannah what Allah has guided us
to the straight path.
One of the very first things that we have to do
is
to ask Him to forgive us all of our previous in
our life of sin that we lived in.
For some it was greater than others. And that's why for some,
there was no difference between them and the kuffar.
They lived no different lives. And, and so for them,
it's more than just repentance.
For them, they need to retake their Shahada.
Those who didn't believe in Allah subhana wa Tada. Even if they were born into Muslim families,
they need to retake their Shahada.
They need to say the Shahada
not just verbally,
but to mean it with their hearts, to understand the meaning of the Shahada.
And to say it with full conviction.
For others, they need to simply turn to Allah subhanho wa Taala in sincere repentance, and this is what is required of each and every single human being.
And so Allah subhanho wa Taala he did not command only
the sinners to turn to Him in repentance. Rather, he addressed who he addressed each and every single believer.
Yeah, you hella de la mano two boo era la he Tabata na suha Oh, you believe all you who believe the believers all of them
turn to align repentance and not just any repentance to button.
A sincere repentance, an honest repentance. What is it sincere
repentance, the scholars, they mentioned that there are certain conditions for a sincere repentance to be accepted by Allah subhanho wa Taala. And so these conditions are, first of all,
that when you turn to a line of repentance, you give up
that sin completely in its entirety. Meaning if you're committing a certain sin,
and then you ask Allah to forgive you, you can't be persisting in that sin.
Rather, you need to cut it off, put it behind you completely. The second condition is that you need to regret having committed that sin.
You need to feel remorse in your heart.
You can't be asking the Lord to forgive you for that sin, while you still feel happy.
And still, you know, remembering the enjoyment of that sin.
And among the conditions for a sincere repentance is
that you become determined to never ever return to that sin ever again in your life.
And this is one of the most difficult parts for many people. And they ask
that I have repented to Allah subhanho wa Taala for a certain sin.
But yeah, I keep on going back to it.
The answer is
that as long as you're determined not to go back to it,
then insha, Allah, your Toba, your repentance is accepted. The problem is those who do not have the determination, the willpower to say that I'm never going to return back to that same ever again.
And so they're asking a lot for forgiveness. But deep down inside, they're planning on going back to that scene, or they don't have a determination to completely put that sin behind their lives.
And finally, a fourth condition which is not regarding each and every single sin, but those sins that are related to
the rights of others, the rights of other human beings. And so that condition is that we restore the rights of those whom we wronged.
And so if we slandered somebody,
if we said evil things about our brothers or sisters, we need to go and ask them to forgive us. If we stole something, we need to go and return it etc. So these are basically the conditions for a sincere repentance, to be accepted by Allah subhanahu wa Tada.
And
we need to realize
that even after we have repented to Allah Subhana, who without a for our sins, even after a loss of Hannah, who attalla has guided us
to this correct guidance to the straight path. It doesn't mean we have become angels. It doesn't mean we're going to be perfect. For the prophet SAW, Selim said khulumani
that every single son of Adam is a sinner he makes mistakes. He's prone to error. But what did the prophet SAW Selim say?
He said, Well, how you don't have power in
that the best of those who sinned are who.
Now not attack, not attack a beam, not those who simply repent, but adware boon, which means those who persistently are always turning to align repentance.
So these are the best people don't think that you're going to become perfect. After Allah has guided you to a straight path. You're going to be making mistakes.
You're going to be falling into sin, but continue to make Toba continue to make Toba until until the day Allah subhanho wa Taala takes you away
after that, another very important piece of advice and an important guideline
is that we remember along this journey in this dunya
we're going to be faced with three enemies.
Each and every single one of us is going to be faced with three enemies.
These enemies are
a shaitan
the dunya
and the knifes and it's how the knifes our souls and it's its whims, its desires.
So as for the
First one shaitan Allah subhanho wa Taala has clearly explicitly in the Quran told us of his enmity. And so a loss of Hannah who with Allah, he said in the Shavasana,
I do one in a shaitan Allah Kuma do one third, the Hebrew who had to
he said that a pawn
is to you an enemy, an open enemy.
So take him as an enemy. The sad reality is that most human beings have not taken him as an enemy, rather, they've taken him as an ally.
And, you know, the enmity of shaitan is from the beginning of time, it's not a new enmity.
And so, it started with our father Adam alayhis, salaam and continued
and so the struggle is continuous between a police
and his allies, his troops, from gym and from mankind, and between the slaves of Allah subhanahu wa Tada.
And this
point, regarding shaitan is very, very important to keep in mind at this particular stage.
When you first come into the guidance of a loss of Hannah, who with the HANA and you start treading this path towards a loss of how to who what data
why, because this is when shaitan, comes and tries to ward you off the most.
And the evidence for this is mentioned in Hadith.
In Muslim, Mr. Mohammed,
where the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam basically he mentioned
that shaytan comes and sits
in the various paths
of the son of Adam.
And so he comes and he sits on the path of Islam,
preventing the person from accepting Islam.
When the person who has decided, you know, now I'm going to accept Islam shaitan comes
and he tries to sit in his way. And so he says, will you become a Muslim?
and abandon
the religion of your fathers
and your grandfathers.
And so,
the son of Adam, he disobeyed shaitan. He doesn't listen to him, he disobeyed him, and he becomes a Muslim.
And then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said,
shaitan, he comes.
And he sits on the path of a Hydra,
the path of migration.
And so he says,
he comes and he says, will you migrate?
Will you migrate and abandon your land and abandon your sky?
This land in which you grew up in, is beloved to you, why abandon it?
And so, the son of Adam,
he disobeyed shaitan. And he migrates, and then return he comes, and he sits on the path of the son of Adam.
When it comes time for jihad,
and so he sits in his way preventing him from going out for jihad.
And he says to him,
will you go out and fight
and then become killed,
and then your wife, she goes and marries another man and your wealth, it becomes distributed among its inheritors.
And so, the son of Adam, he disobeyed shaitan. And he goes, and fights in jihad.
This is an authentic hadith narrated by a man.
And so as we can see, in this Hadith, the common factor in these examples that the prophet SAW Selim gave is the very beginning of the path towards the loss of Hannah who with the Haida towards the pleasure of Allah subhana wa Tada. Why?
Because once you start
to tread that path,
and you are in the midst of it, you are deeply involved in a certain act of obedience, worshiping Allah subhanho wa Taala.
Then it becomes too difficult for shaitan to ward you away.
But before you've actually begun,
that is the time which I thought comes because then it's easy.
And so we find many of us, we find many of us, whether we be newly practicing Muslims, or whether we have been practicing for ages.
We find this challenge before us each and every single day.
That whenever we want to do an act of obedience shaitan comes to us, trying to warn us away, distracting us.
If he can distract us
with certain haram things. He distracts us with things which are hella
and so if you want to pray in the morning,
you want to stay up after surgery.
And remember Allah subhanho wa Taala reciting the Quran and then praying Salatu loja shaitan comes and he says you're very tired.
You need to go
to work to school or whatever it be. And so you need some rest.
And so it's not haram for you to go and sleep. You can do that. But this is from the trips and the tracks, the traps and tricks or shaitan. He comes to you when, before you actually involve yourself in that particular act of obedience. And so this is what we need to be aware of, especially on the beginning of the path of guidance. When we first start practicing the deen of Allah subhana wa Tada, you're going to find a lot of roadblocks.
A lot of roadblocks that you're going to have to that you're going to have to bypass that shaitan puts in your way.
The second end enemy that I mentioned was the doula
and so a loss of Hannah who would
throw the Quran has told us of the reality of the nature of the dunya.
And so loss of Hannah who attended says woman higher to dunya Illa.
Woman higher to dunya Illa Mata
that the life of the dunya is nothing but
a deceptive enjoyment.
The life of the dunya is nothing but a deceptive type of enjoyment.
In other words, it's an enjoyment.
But
it's a deceiving type of enjoyment.
What do we mean by that? What we mean by that
is
that the dunia its very nature is is temporary.
It's short, it's a few hours, a few days.
And that's not the reality of enjoyment.
And each and every single one of us, he experiences this,
that when you eat something that's very delicious.
That you will love to eat, you eat it, and then
that enjoyment lasts for a period of time, but then it goes away.
whatever type of enjoyment it be, it is temporary. The true type of enjoyment is what type,
the permanent type of enjoyment and that enjoyment is the enjoyment of the IRA.
And so the very nature of the enjoyment of the dunya is that it is deceptive.
It is deceptive. And so
don't be among those
who build
their home in this door in Estonia.
They put all of their effort
into getting the best type of job
gathering the most money
and then investing it in buying homes,
in buying cars.
They invested in dystonia.
And then, in the Acura, they will come
and find
another group of people
who they used to look down on
who never used to care about the dunya.
But they too were active.
What were they active in, not in building their home in Estonia, but in building their home in the UK. Don't be among those who will come on the day of judgment and find that these people
who they used to look down on who they used to say these people are wasting their time.
Don't come on the day of jail on the day of judgment and find that they have built mansions for themselves. mansions that they will live in for eternity
and
If you are among those than on that day,
you will be the most regretful of people.
And the third enemy that I mentioned was the knifes and it's how the knifes and it's how
and so,
Allah subhanahu wa tada has told us
about this knifes
that is inside each and every single one of us,
the soul that is within us
and what it desires.
So Allah subhanho wa Taala into the tune as your heart
has mentioned to groups of people with regards to their enough's and with regards to their How are these whims and desires of their nuts? So lots of Hannah who had died He says, What amantha What are therell hayata dunya for in Naja Hina heal. As for those who transgressed all down
and preferred, they preferred the life of this dunya
for them is nothing but the Hellfire their abode. Their home will be the hellfire. And then Allah Subhana who without it says one Nah, man hoffa mahkamah Robbie Werner nafsa Anil Hawa for in a janitor here. As for he who feared standing before his Lord subhanho wa Taala and prevented his knifes from following its Hawa, from following his desires. Then for him will be gender, his abode his home ob, Jen Eben ambass, Roby Allahu, and he commented on this verse, and he said,
that it refers to an individual
who is about to commit a certain sin
and then
he stops
and then he remembers the standing before Allah subhanahu wa tada
hoffa Nakamura be he feared standing before his Lord. And so he remembered the day of judgment and him standing before Allah subhana wa tada being called to account for committing the sin. And then what does he do because of that fear, he prevents his knifes from following its desires.
And so
this is the reality of the neffs. And it's how and so we have two groups of people. And so, whenever you're faced with a situation
where you have to choose between two things, remember which of these two things is more pleasing to Allah subhanho wa Taala you'll find that is opposite is that which is displeasing to Allah Subhana who What?
After that, another very important piece of advice for each and every single one of us whom Allah subhanahu wa tada has guided to the straight path is that we need to enter into the deen of Allah subhanho wa Taala completely. Yeah, you know, yeah, you
sell me katha, or you believe enter into the deen into Islam completely. And what I mean by this is that many Muslims
they practice certain aspects of Islam while neglecting other aspects. And this is not what it was subhanho wa Taala wants from us.
What Allah subhanho wa Taala wants from us is to practice the deen entirely.
And so Islam is a complete way of life. It's not just spirituality.
It's not just fighting. It's not just worship.
It's not just politics, it's complete way of life. And so don't be among those who only practice certain aspects of the deen. Such as showing Islam outwardly growing their beards, wearing Islamic clothing,
our sisters wearing hijab, but yet their hearts
are diseased. They haven't worked on their hearts. They haven't worked on cleaning their hearts of having hatred towards their brothers and sisters.
They haven't cleaned their hearts from the various diseases of the hearts. This is only one example and so
What is required from each and every single one of us is that we enter into the deen entirely. What makes many Muslims go into various extremes is
that they fail to practice Islam in its entirety. And so, they take one aspect and go into extremes into that aspect while neglecting other aspects of the day.
After that, the next very important piece of advice and guideline is
that you start with that which is most important. Once a loss of head on without it has guided you to the straight path.
Start by that which is most important. Start with obligations. Start by working on your beliefs.
What is required from me as a Muslim to believe in? What are the fundamentals of Islam? What are the core principles of Islam, that if a person was not to believe in, he wouldn't even be considered to be a Muslim?

And so the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had eaten could see the Hadith which he narrates from Allah subhanho wa Taala. He said, Well Matt Tucker, Robert la Abdi, be sure in a hub de la master to LA that my slave awasum parenthood Allah says, my slave does not come closer to me by anything that is most beloved to me, except by that which I have made obligatory upon him which means that what is most beloved to Allah is that which Allah has made obligatory upon us, in terms of beliefs, in terms of very bad acts, in terms of Mohammed at our dealings. And so start with the obligations, then move on to the extra actions, those extra actions that are that will get us closer to Allah Subhana who
would data
from a salah and fasting and saw the court and so on and so forth.
Among the very important pieces of advice
is regarding masala
and so, as a prophet Sal seldom said
the masala is the very pillar of the deen
that the entire Deen is built upon.
And so this is the very first thing you need to start working on. Start working on your salon. And so the prophet SAW Selim, he made a distinction between the Muslim and the cat here with us, Allah. Allahu la de Bain and Albania, Hamas, Allah, the treaty, the pleasure that is between us Muslims and the kuffaar is a sala taraka alphacard Kapha. So whoever abandons the Salah, then he has become a Catholic.
And so we need to preserve our sunlight. If you're not getting up for Salatu fudger
then this is a very dangerous path.
You need to be aware.
Not only that, but also realize that Salah has been mentioned by the Prophet Solomon so many different occasions. And so,
the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mentioned that when any one of you sins
and then he performs wobbu, perfecting his will Lu and then he prays to rock as and then he asks a lot for forgiveness than Allah Subhana who without will forgive him for this. This shows us the importance of us Allah, that every single time you sin, turn to Allah in prayer also, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam whenever a worry and anxiety a problem would afflict him, he would immediately rush to what not to the psychologists not to the doctors, he would immediately rush to a Sala and so, your medicine is a solid your link between yourself and a lot is this a lot of yours. And that is because the knifes when it becomes worried when it falls into distress and anxiety, it
becomes weak.
And that is when shaitan becomes strong. Your shaitan which is when you once your enough's becomes weak, your shaitan becomes strong. And so you need an aid you need a day
defense against shaitan what is that defense? It is nothing other than masala
another very very important piece of advice
when many start practicing the deen
is that there'll be tempted with those thoughts of those past sins that they used to come in.
And shaitan will come
and tempt them by making them to remember the enjoyment, the pleasure of those things. And so you need to be aware of that. And you need to remember
that what you have chosen
of abandoning those things, what you have chosen of the guidance of Allah subhana wa tada is far better than that enjoyment. And so a loss of Hannah who without it says, woman yet tequila, Yala, who Maharajan we are resuming hydrolyzed acid, whoever fears or loss of Hannah who with the HANA, Allah will make an opening for him, he will open up the ways for him, and provide for him from ways that he could never have even imagined. And so if you had a job
that was based on her arm, and you abandon it,
you gave it up for the sake of Allah shaitan will come to you
and tempt you to go back to it.
And so remember this verse, whoever fears Allah, Allah will open up the waste for him. Yes, you made a lot of money.
But because you abandon it for the sake of Allah, Allah will not betray you, He will give you that which is far better than it.
Among the pieces of advice for each and every single Muslim, who turns back to a loss of Hannah who would data is that you will find yourself as the days go by.
As the months go by, as the years go by, you will find yourself as a stranger,
even among your family, even among your close friends, and in the society that used to accept you. And this is something that the prophets of Salaam told us
that would exist in the end of time. And these are the times that we're living in today.
And so the prophet SAW Selim said, better al Islam overeem was iaru horiba. For today, Allah hora de,
that Islam began strange.
Islam began in Makkah, with very few followers, the followers were looked at as being strangers, they practiced
a different way of life.
They were looked at as strangers, Islam began as something strange was Udo horiba. And it will return again
at a later time as something strange.
And then the prophet SAW Selim said, For to
give glad tidings to the strangers. And so you are a stranger today. in this society we live in, in these times we live in, we are all strangers, because we are few. And so this is the reality that you need to realize.
Among the very important pieces of advice
for every newcomer
is
that
one of the best ways of keeping yourself firm upon the Dean of loss of Hannah who with data and upon the straight path is by seeking knowledge of the deen
by seeking knowledge of your religion. And so there are so many different versions of Islam out there.
And the new Muslim, he becomes confused, what do I choose? The only way for you to distinguish is by seeking knowledge of your religion. Go back to the sources of Islam, go back to the Quran and the Sunnah,
upon the understanding of who
not not upon the understanding of so and so, or so and so rather upon the understanding of the best of generations, the Sahaba and the tabea in and those who follow them, the righteous scholars who came in every era and in every age and remember that the people of knowledge, they are the ones who fear a lot the most in NEMA Yahshua LA, de la rue la that verily
Only
those fear of loss of Hannah who with data, those who have knowledge of Him.
Finally,
another very, very important piece of advice and guideline for each and every single one of us
is that now that you have started on your path of guidance towards the loss of Hannah who would Tada.
You need to change your ways. And so it's not sufficient for you to remain upon your old habits and your old customs.
