In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious,
the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of
the worlds.
And peace and blessings be upon the best
of Allah's creation, and upon his family and
companions, and upon those who are guided by
his guidance.
We await his Sunnah until the Day of
Judgment.
O Allah, teach us what benefits us, and
benefit us with what You have taught us,
and increase us in knowledge.
And show us the truth as it is,
and grant us to follow it.
And show us what is false as it
is, and grant us to avoid it.
And make us of those who listen to
the word, and follow what is good and
what is bad.
And peace and blessings be upon you.
We continue on to Hadith number 72.
And this Hadith is collected by Imam Muslim
in his Sahih.
Narrated by Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud.
He says, The Messenger of Allah, peace and
blessings be upon him, said, The
Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, tells
us in this Hadith that no one will
enter Jannah if they have in their heart
an atom's weight of pride, of arrogance.
So one of the Sahaba, he heard this,
so he said, O Messenger of Allah, sometimes
a man may like for his clothes to
be good, to have the best of clothes.
And for his shoes to be nice.
Basically, this companion, what he understood, was that
if you wear nice clothes, fancy clothes, the
latest brand, that this is what the Prophet,
peace and blessings be upon him, is talking
about when he is talking about arrogance.
So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him, responded by saying, Allah is Jameel.
He is beautiful.
And he loves beauty.
As for Kibr, arrogance and pride, it is
to reject the truth and to look down
on others.
To reject the truth and to look down
on people.
And so the Prophet, peace and blessings be
upon him, basically tells us in this Hadith
the danger of Kibr, arrogance.
And how arrogance, anyone who has not a
lot of arrogance, but even a small amount
of arrogance, this is the danger of it.
Even a small amount of arrogance, he is
going to end up in the Hellfire.
He won't be able to enter Jannah.
So this shows us the danger of arrogance.
But what is arrogance?
What is Kibr?
Does it mean someone who likes to dress
fancy and wear clothes that other people are
not wearing?
Or he has new clothes and he likes
to wear them?
No, that's not the meaning of it.
However, arrogant people, they are usually like that.
People who have arrogance in their hearts, usually
they are like that.
And that's why this companion, he thought that
that's what the Prophet is talking about.
But it doesn't matter about the outward appearance.
What matters is what's in the heart.
What matters is what's in the heart.
However, what appears on the outside is usually
a sign of what's on the inside.
But that's not always the case.
And that's why the Prophet ﷺ responded by
telling him what Kibr actually is.
So he mentioned that it is two things.
That Kibr, arrogance, is two things.
Number one, to reject the truth.
People reject the truth because of arrogance.
Either fully or partially.
So those who reject Islam, past and present,
they rejected Islam primarily because of arrogance.
As Allah tells us throughout the Qur'an,
in so many ayat, in so many countless
number of ayat, Allah tells us the reason
why they reject the truth is because of
arrogance.
اِسْتِكْبَارًا مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ And if you look at
the people who the Prophet ﷺ was sent
to, the kuffar of Quraysh, his people, they
didn't reject Islam because they didn't think it
was not the truth.
They knew deep down inside it is the
truth.
But it was arrogance that prevented them from
accepting it.
And that's why Allah has mentioned so many
ayat mentioning the punishment of this kind of
arrogance.
This kind of kuffar is worse than the
kind of kuffar where a person is ignorant
of the truth.
Where he doesn't accept Islam because he doesn't
know what Islam is.
Maybe the proofs never came to him or
he didn't bother searching for the truth.
But imagine someone the truth comes to him
and he recognizes it as being the truth
and he rejects it.
And that's why the Prophet ﷺ says here
that whoever has even an atom's weight of
arrogance in his heart, he will enter Jannah.
So that is rejecting the truth fully.
Someone who rejects Islam, the truth of Islam.
Rejecting the truth partially, this concerns Muslims.
A Muslim can land into the same rejection
of the truth because of arrogance.
For example, many Muslims who don't follow Islam
according to how it is in the Qur
'an and the Sunnah.
They follow it based on their customs and
traditions.
So if someone comes to them and says,
look Allah says this in the Qur'an
and the Prophet ﷺ has taught us this.
He may reject that because of arrogance.
He may reject that because of arrogance and
there are many examples of this.
There are many examples of this.
Like who are you to tell me?
That kind of attitude.
That kind of attitude falls under this hadith
of rejecting the truth because of arrogance.
So we need to be extremely careful.
And the Prophet ﷺ said the second thing
that kibr entails is looking down on the
people.
Looking down on others.
And this usually results from being
self-amazed.
Having self-amazement.
There are some people who think they're all
that.
And they think they're better than everyone else.
So because they have that quality in their
heart, they end up looking down on everyone
else.
They end up looking down on everyone else.
And the Prophet ﷺ tells us, بِحَسْبِ مِرِئٍ
مِنَ الشَّرِّ أَن يَحْقِرَ أَخَاهُ الْمُسْلِمِ It is
enough evil for a person to have, you
know, evil.
It's enough for him to look down on
his Muslim brother.
Just having that trait makes someone evil.
So you could be a righteous, pious Muslim
who prays and very religious.
But if you look down on others, then
the Prophet ﷺ is saying you're evil.
So again, we need to be extremely careful.
Kibr is something dangerous.
Having arrogance in our hearts, as the Prophet
ﷺ says here, having a small amount in
Adam's weight of it will prevent you from
entering Jannah.
Now, in this hadith, the Prophet ﷺ says
that Allah is Jameel.
We learn from that that one of the
names of Allah is Jameel.
That one of the names of Allah is
Jameel.
And that He loves beauty.
And Jameel means beautiful.
And what that means regarding Allah is two
things.
That Allah is beautiful in every way.
Far more beautiful than anything of His creation.
But we can never comprehend or imagine that
beauty.
Because it's beyond anything that we have ever
seen.
And number two, all of Allah's attributes are
beautiful.
All of Allah's names and attributes are attributes
of beauty and perfection.
And Allah loving beauty means two things as
well.
Allah loving beauty means two things as well.
Number one, outer beauty.
So, taking care of oneself by keeping oneself
neat and tidy outwardly.
As the Prophet ﷺ says that cleanliness is
half of Iman.
It's not proper for a Muslim to live
with a messy and dirty appearance.
And number two, inner beauty.
Which is the beauty of one's akhlaq and
one's manners and one's behavior.
The next hadith is found in Sahih Muslim
as well.
Hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As.
The
Prophet
ﷺ says that he has succeeded.
The one who embraces Islam and he is
given, he is provided with sufficient rizq, sufficient
provision, sustenance.
And number three, Allah makes himself sufficient.
Allah makes him to be satisfied with what
he has.
Whenever success is mentioned in the Qur'an
or in the sunnah, the word falah.
Whenever it's mentioned in the Qur'an or
in the sunnah, it refers primarily to the
success of the akhira.
But it also includes success in this dunya.
It also includes success in this dunya.
And here the Prophet ﷺ gives us three
qualities that we should have in order to
attain that success.
The first, and these three, the Prophet ﷺ
is saying that if you want success, you
have to have all these three.
He didn't say or.
He didn't say either this or that.
He said and.
So each one of these three.
What are they?
Number one, Islam.
Right.
Whoever, whoever follows a deen other than Islam.
He's going to be in the akhira, he's
going to be from among the losers, not
the successful ones.
And without Islam, no matter what you have
of the dunya, it's worthless.
You could be the richest person on earth.
You could be the healthiest person on earth.
You can have anything of the dunya.
But without Islam, you're nothing.
You're a loser without Islam.
And then after that, if you're a Muslim
and you have rizq, which is sufficient, then
you're better than a Muslim who's struggling to
make ends meet.
And so a poor Muslim, he has to
rely on others and he has to go
around begging.
And then there could be some who Allah
gives them rizq.
So you're a Muslim and you're rich.
Or you have enough to make ends meet.
But then you're not satisfied.
And so that's why the Prophet ﷺ says,
and Allah makes you satisfied with what he
has given to you.
These are the three qualities that if they
come together in a person, he is the
most successful person on earth.
Because he has taken care of his deen
and his dunya.
He has taken care of his deen and
his dunya.
As for those who have Islam and they
have money and they have enough rizq, but
they're still not satisfied with what Allah has
given to them, then what are they going
to do?
They're going to constantly be chasing after the
dunya.
And that's going to make them forget about
their akhirah.
That's going to make them forget about their
akhirah.
And that's why they don't have complete success.
But if Allah has made you to be
satisfied with what he has given to you,
and even if you have the bare minimum
to make ends meet, then you are far
better than the one who has a lot
more than you, but he's not happy.
And how many rich people out there, they're
not happy with what Allah has given to
them, and they want more and they want
more and they want more, and they keep
on chasing after the dunya.
And the Prophet ﷺ tells us that true
richness is not having material possessions.
True richness is not having all the luxuries
of the dunya.
But true richness, he says, is the richness
of the heart.
Meaning, to be satisfied and content at heart
with what Allah has given to you.
Now this does not mean that a Muslim
should not seek more of the dunya.
That's not what we're saying here.
But what we're saying here is that at
heart you should be satisfied, should be content
with what Allah has given to you.
If you have that quality of contentment, then
seek the dunya, no problem.
The next hadith is narrated by Imam Ahmad
in his Musnad and also Ibn Majah.
And scholars of hadith have differed over its
authenticity.
Some graded it as being da'if.
Others, Shaykh al-Albani grades it as hasan.
This is the hadith of Abu Ayyub al
-Ansari.
He says, وَأَجْمِعِ
الْيَأْسَ مِمَّا فِي أَيْدِ النَّاسِ He says that
a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and
said, Ya Rasulullah, give me a reminder, a
mawa'idha, an admonition, and keep it short.
Give me a reminder that's short.
And so the Prophet ﷺ gave him three
things to stick to.
Number one, he said, when you get up
to pray, then pray the salah of a
farewell person.
Pray the salah, that kind of salah where
you are bidding farewell to the dunya.
This is number one.
Number two, and do not speak.
Don't say anything that you will have to
be sorry for tomorrow.
And number three, have despair in what is
in the hands of the people.
Gather despair or helplessness or hopelessness in your
heart for what is in the hands of
the people.
So firstly, irrespective of whether the hadith is
authentic or not, the scholars say the meaning
is correct.
The meaning mentioned in this hadith can be
found in so many other ahadith.
And so the first part, the Prophet ﷺ
explains to this companion how he should be
focused in his salah.
And we talk a lot about khushu'a,
being in a state of khushu'a in
our salah.
And many people ask, how can I do
that?
Because whenever we pray, shaytan comes to us.
And he takes us to a different world.
Some of us, we don't know what we
even said in our salah.
And so there are so many tips that
can be given to improve your khushu'a
in your salah.
But this is one of the best tips.
This is one of the best pieces of
advice.
As the Prophet ﷺ says here, when you
get up to pray, imagine as if this
is your last salah.
How would you pray if you knew that
after I say salam, I'm never going to
pray another salah in this dunya again.
That's it.
I'm leaving.
I'm departing from this dunya.
How would you pray?
You wouldn't pray it like you pray it
today.
That's for sure.
And so when you remind yourself that this
could be your last salah, it will help
you to focus and pray with khushu'a
and humility, to pray with ihsan, as if
you are seeing Allah, or knowing that Allah
is watching you, your every word, your every
movement, and your every thought.
And the reality is that we should pray
every salah with that in mind.
That this could be our last salah.
Why?
Because none of us knows when we're going
to die.
This could really be our last salah.
Realistically speaking, chances are there that this could
be your last salah.
So why not pray every salah as if
it's your farewell salah?
Number two, the importance of protecting our tongue.
As the Prophet ﷺ has mentioned on more
than one occasion, the danger of the tongue.
And how most people, what will land them
in the hellfire is what their tongue spoke.
And so we need to think twice and
thrice before we say something.
As the Prophet ﷺ says, Whoever guarantees for
me what is between his two jaws, meaning
his tongue, and what is between his two
legs, meaning his private part, I guarantee him
Jannah.
I guarantee him Jannah.
And the Prophet ﷺ says that sometimes a
man, he'll say a word that he never
thought about.
He carelessly says one word.
This one word will land him in the
hellfire a distance further than that between the
east and the west.
Or that between the heavens and the earth.
And here the Prophet ﷺ says, Do not
say anything that you will be sorry for
tomorrow.
Don't say anything that you'll have to excuse
yourself for tomorrow.
That you will regret.
And so most of us, we don't think
before we speak, and then that lands us
in trouble.
And then later on we regret.
We wish we hadn't said it.
And finally, despair in what is in the
hands of the people.
This brings us to the previous hadith.
Here the Prophet ﷺ is telling us that
we shouldn't be looking at what others have.
Be happy with what Allah has given to
you.
Be satisfied.
Don't keep on looking at others.
Oh, others have that, I want it too.
So and so has that, I want it
too.
No, just be hopeless.
Meaning, don't hope for what is in the
hands of the people.
Don't hope for what's in their hands.
Lose hope.
And this tells us the importance of what
is known as zuhid in Islam.
Living a life in which we don't attach
ourselves to the dunya.
And we take as little as we can
with us to our akhirah.
Finally, one last hadith we'll cover for tonight.
And this is the hadith of Mus'ab
ibn Sa'd.
And this is in Bukhari.
Sahih al-Bukhari.
Mus'ab ibn Sa'd was the son of
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas.
The great companion, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas.
He says that the Prophet ﷺ said, Do
you not get victory and help?
And do you not get rizq?
Except through the weak among you?
Now, other narrations of this hadith give us
a more complete picture as to why the
Prophet ﷺ said this.
Basically, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas, the famous companion,
he started to think that because of his
power, his strength in jihad, because of his
wealth, that he was better than the weak
among the Muslims.
Those who had less.
And he thought that victory will come to
the Muslims and wealth will come to the
Muslims through the powerful among us.
So the Prophet ﷺ wanted to dispel this
idea.
And so he said this.
Right?
When it comes to victory, when it comes
to rizq and sustenance and wealth, there are
two ways of acquiring it.
One is through material means that Allah has
given to us in this dunya.
And Allah has commanded us to do that.
When it comes to jihad against the enemies,
Allah says in the Qur'an, وَأَعِدُوا لَهُمْ
مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ مِنْ قُوَّةٍ Don't go to war
without any weapons.
No, prepare yourselves.
Because you can't win without strength, without military
power.
The same thing with rizq.
You have to work for it through material
means in the dunya to acquire wealth and
rizq.
But that is not the only way.
There is another way which is far more
important that most people neglect.
That most people overlook.
And that is the non-material.
That is the non-material means.
And that is the strength of iman and
tawakkul.
Reliance on Allah.
And making dua to Allah.
And having our hearts attached to Allah.
That He is going to bring us victory
and He is going to bring us rizq,
etc.
And that's why the Prophet ﷺ says that
it is through the weak among us, those
who don't have wealth, those who don't have
strength, it is through them that Allah brings
victory.
It is through them that Allah brings us
wealth and rizq.
Why?
Because their hearts are more attached to Allah
than the rich and the powerful.
Even if they may be Muslims.
As in this example.
This exact example of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqas.
He was a Muslim.
But he overlooked this.
And he was from the elite, from Quraysh,
from the noble, from the strong.
So the point is that our victory comes
from those whose hearts are attached to Allah.
Because Allah tells us in the Qur'an
that our victory only comes from Allah.
It doesn't come from anywhere else.
Yes, we have to take the steps for
it.
And that includes taking material means.
But that is not the essence of it.
Because we can have all the material means
in the world.
We can have all the military power in
the world.
If Allah decides not to give us victory,
He won't give it to us.
But rather it is through relying upon Allah.
As Allah says, وَمَن نَصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِنْدِ
اللَّهِ The help and the victory only comes
from Allah.
It doesn't come from anywhere else.
And we can see this again throughout our
history.
Whenever Muslims have been victorious, it was when
they were weak.
It was when they were outnumbered.
It was when they were less powerful.
It was when the odds were against them.
This is the sunnah of Allah.
Right?
And so whoever thinks that today, for example,
that the plight of our Muslim brothers in
Palestine will only come to an end if
we call on the United Nations for help,
or the other countries for help, whoever thinks
that, he's mistaken.
He's mistaken.
But rather it's going to come from the
people themselves.
The Muslims on the ground over there.
And we've seen this.
We've seen this throughout what's been happening recently.
That look at how helpless these people are.
With no outside support.
With nothing in their hands.
Yes, they've had to sacrifice a lot.
And they will have to sacrifice a lot
more.
But we shouldn't think for even one moment
that that means they're going to be defeated.
It's not going to happen.
They're not going to be defeated.
Because if that was the case, then they
would have been defeated a long time ago.
They would have been defeated a long time
ago.
It's been more than a year.
And yet, the greatest military power on earth,
with the aid of the greatest military power
on earth, cannot defeat them.
And what does it tell you?
It tells you that victory comes from Allah,
and it comes from our weak.
When you go on the ground over there,
you see how these Muslims, their hearts are
attached to Allah.
You can see it from their words.
They're not calling on the powers of the
world.
They've given up on them.
They're calling on Allah.
And they're constantly reminding the ummah that that
is where the victory is going to come
from.
Obviously, that doesn't mean we shouldn't help them.
That doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to do
what we can.
But the point here is, as the Prophet
ﷺ says, that the help comes from the
poor among us, or the weak and the
powerless among us.
And Allah knows best.
We'll stop with that.
