00:00:00 --> 00:00:00
			Music.

00:00:05 --> 00:00:07
			Welcome back. I'm Gareth Edward.
It's great to have you with us.

00:00:07 --> 00:00:10
			This Friday morning, the gift of
the givers has expressed its

00:00:10 --> 00:00:14
			gratitude after a postage stamp
was released to recognize the

00:00:14 --> 00:00:17
			foundation's contribution to
national international relief

00:00:17 --> 00:00:20
			efforts. The SA post office taking
recommendations from members of

00:00:20 --> 00:00:23
			the public. Well, let's speak to
the man who's on the man who's on

00:00:23 --> 00:00:25
			the receiving end of this, a very
busy man, I can assure you as

00:00:25 --> 00:00:28
			well. It's a MTS Suleiman,
Director of gift of the givers.

00:00:28 --> 00:00:30
			MTS morning to you. We often have
a chance to talk about it, but

00:00:30 --> 00:00:33
			it's about the relief efforts
you're involved with. Finally,

00:00:33 --> 00:00:37
			something for you guys to to look
at. Yes, you know, it's been a

00:00:37 --> 00:00:41
			great announcement. It also shows
that we have youth South African

00:00:41 --> 00:00:44
			support, because this was by
public submission approved by

00:00:44 --> 00:00:47
			cabinet and Parliament. It just re
endorses the fate of the

00:00:47 --> 00:00:50
			government and the media and the
country in our efforts, which

00:00:50 --> 00:00:52
			means, of course, we get more
support to help more people in

00:00:52 --> 00:00:55
			distress in this country, in the
continent and all over the world.

00:00:56 --> 00:00:59
			It's a postage stamp, and people
will wonder, well, why that of all

00:00:59 --> 00:01:01
			the recognitions in the world? But
as you say, it's very tangible for

00:01:01 --> 00:01:04
			people to be able to be able to
see it and be able to understand

00:01:04 --> 00:01:07
			what it is that you do, and for
people who might not be as

00:01:07 --> 00:01:09
			familiar with the background of
gift of the givers, how long has

00:01:09 --> 00:01:13
			it taken you to reach the sort of
status that you have now? 20

00:01:13 --> 00:01:17
			years. You know, on Sixth August,
1992 was our inception. Sixth

00:01:17 --> 00:01:21
			August this year is 21 years. So
it's and the last five or six

00:01:21 --> 00:01:24
			years have been very significant.
I know it took time. In the

00:01:24 --> 00:01:27
			beginning, it was assumed that to
be a Muslim only organization.

00:01:27 --> 00:01:31
			Over the last five or six years,
people have seen that we are pure

00:01:31 --> 00:01:33
			humanitarian, that we work with
all groups, that all groups are

00:01:33 --> 00:01:36
			part of our team. Everybody works
with us. And you know, we have no

00:01:36 --> 00:01:39
			political agenda. We are pure
humanitarian, and our aim is to

00:01:39 --> 00:01:42
			help people and save lives
international recognition as well,

00:01:42 --> 00:01:45
			often comes from governments from
outside of the country. You've

00:01:45 --> 00:01:48
			been involved with a few of the
projects outside of our borders,

00:01:48 --> 00:01:50
			and I think it's important to
recognize that, if you had to look

00:01:50 --> 00:01:53
			back, particularly maybe over the
last five, six years, as you

00:01:53 --> 00:01:56
			mentioned, how important those
were, what has been the hardest

00:01:56 --> 00:01:59
			for gift of the givers to try and
manage?

00:02:00 --> 00:02:04
			All of them had different type of
challenges. I must say, each one

00:02:04 --> 00:02:06
			is different, you know, but the
end result is the same that you

00:02:06 --> 00:02:09
			need to get in. And I think in
most cases, the biggest problem

00:02:09 --> 00:02:13
			is, how do you help so many people
in such a short space of time, but

00:02:13 --> 00:02:17
			so few resources? You go to an
earthquake, there's 250,000 people

00:02:17 --> 00:02:20
			dead. You need to go to the
buildings to try to find as many

00:02:20 --> 00:02:22
			people alive in the rubble as
possible. Of course, you're not

00:02:22 --> 00:02:24
			the only team. The only team
there. There's teams from all over

00:02:24 --> 00:02:27
			the world. We all face to the same
problems. And then you have

00:02:27 --> 00:02:30
			millions of people who are hungry,
who are cold, who have no shelter,

00:02:30 --> 00:02:33
			who need medical care. How do you
get the most difficult decision

00:02:33 --> 00:02:36
			is, how do you decide which area
you serve and which area do you

00:02:36 --> 00:02:39
			live out and you play god
unfortunately, and say, Okay, I

00:02:39 --> 00:02:42
			will work in Houghton and I won't
work in centenn, that kind of

00:02:42 --> 00:02:46
			issue. But the other the flip side
is, if you save one life, you save

00:02:46 --> 00:02:49
			one life. So we're going
realistically, knowing we can't

00:02:49 --> 00:02:52
			save everybody, but we know we can
save somebody. So we use that

00:02:52 --> 00:02:56
			attitude in every disaster. Almost
21 years ago, I imagine it started

00:02:56 --> 00:02:59
			as an idea, conceptualization, and
a very small group. Give me an

00:02:59 --> 00:03:02
			idea of the network that you're
now involved with is it's not just

00:03:02 --> 00:03:05
			you and a few of your members from
gift of the givers that you have

00:03:05 --> 00:03:09
			an expansive network that goes
around the continent. No, it goes

00:03:09 --> 00:03:13
			around the world. You know, the
good thing about such a good

00:03:13 --> 00:03:15
			thing, the good thing of disaster,
is when you go to another area,

00:03:15 --> 00:03:19
			you always meet people from other
countries and through media,

00:03:19 --> 00:03:22
			through visiting, through writes
up, people contact you, and the

00:03:22 --> 00:03:24
			more people know about you, the
more they write to you. And

00:03:24 --> 00:03:27
			inevitably, whenever a disaster
happens, somebody from that

00:03:27 --> 00:03:30
			country knows you, or somebody
from that country lives in this

00:03:30 --> 00:03:34
			country, South Africa. So
multinational now and in the last

00:03:34 --> 00:03:36
			show, clearly the last few
missions, people from those

00:03:36 --> 00:03:39
			countries were living here, and
they came with us. They speak the

00:03:39 --> 00:03:41
			language, they know the area. So
it means much easier. But of

00:03:41 --> 00:03:44
			course, we have a massive network.
We have 60 permanent staff. We

00:03:44 --> 00:03:46
			have our own search and rescue
teams. We have our own medical

00:03:46 --> 00:03:49
			teams. We have our own specialized
equipment. We have relationships

00:03:49 --> 00:03:51
			with governments. We have
relationships with people all over

00:03:51 --> 00:03:54
			the world. So it just growing and
growing very briefly, just as we

00:03:54 --> 00:03:57
			begin to wrap up, when is this
little postage step going to come

00:03:57 --> 00:03:59
			under? I asked you, or if you had
one, you don't have one yet, not

00:03:59 --> 00:04:02
			even you. The director has one.
When is it coming out? When can

00:04:02 --> 00:04:04
			people get it? It's well, 11
o'clock this morning. They'll be

00:04:04 --> 00:04:06
			unveiled, and soon the after, it
will be available through through

00:04:06 --> 00:04:09
			the post office. Well done. I
think you deserve it. Certainly.

00:04:09 --> 00:04:11
			Well, gift of the givers,
Director, MT Suleiman, joining us.

00:04:11 --> 00:04:14
			It's certainly a bit of
recognition for what the group

00:04:14 --> 00:04:17
			does the post office, releasing a
stamp later this morning,

00:04:17 --> 00:04:20
			recognizing the work by gift of
the givers.

00:04:22 --> 00:04:22
			You
