Inshallah today we will spend
the evening reflecting on the life of the
dear and beloved Sahabi of Rasulullah ﷺ Zaid
Ibn Al-Arqam رضي الله تعالى عنه Zaid
Ibn Al-Arqam رضي الله تعالى عنه is
an Ansari companion from Madinah Munawwara from the
Hazraj tribe The historians have differed in opinion
on what his kunyah was Ibn Asaker in
his Tariq Dimashq goes into pages of discussion
with different riwayat quoting the different opinions Some
have said that his kunyah was Abu Amr
where you call Abu Aamir Another opinion is
that it was Abu Aamir One opinion is
that it was Abu Saeed while another is
that it was Abu Saad and The last
is that his kunyah was Abu Unaisa Al
-Ansari رضي الله عنه He lived in Madinah
Munawwara with Rasulullah ﷺ and then later in
life During the Khilafah of Sayyidina Ali رضي
الله عنه, he relocated to Kufa.
He participated in many great battles When he
was young he had a desire to join
Rasulullah ﷺ in the Battle of Uhud.
He was from a righteous family, righteous people
His father left him at a young age.
So he grew up under the care and
mentorship of Abdullah bin Rawaha رضي الله عنه
Who later on will be martyred in the
Battle of Muta Abdullah bin Rawaha رضي الله
عنه accepted Islam during the pledge So right
there Zayd ibn Al-Arqam رضي الله عنه
also enters into Islam Surrounded by great warriors
and eloquent people Abdullah bin Rawaha رضي الله
عنه was one of the poets of Madinah
Munawwara and a poet of Islam He also
lined up to be enlisted for the Battle
of Uhud The Prophet ﷺ turned him away
The Prophet ﷺ
did not include these companions because of their
young age.
However, they were strong.
He told them Instead of standing in the
battlefield, you will stay behind in Madinah Munawwara
and look after the children and the women
So they took arms and they protected Madinah
Munawwara in the absence of Rasulullah ﷺ So,
we know he didn't participate in the Battle
of Uhud.
However after that What was the next great
battle that he participated in?
Ibn Asakir narrates that أَوَّلُ مَشْهَدِهِ الْمُرَيْسِيَةِ The
first great battle that he took part in
was the Battle of Muraisiyah, otherwise also known
as Banu Mustaliq We'll come back to Al
-Muraisiyah later on and his role in One
great incident that occurred on the way back
from this battle.
Others they say That it was actually Dhat
al-Ashir that he participated in as the
first battle There are other opinions too.
Some say it was Khandaq that he participated
first in and so on Barra bin A
'zib and Zayd ibn Al-Arqam were one
day walking together and Abu Ishaq was with
them The narrator Abu Ishaq says I was
standing right between both of them Barra bin
A'zib and Zayd ibn Al-Arqam
I asked
him Zayd how many Expeditions did the Prophet
ﷺ partake in?
فَقَالَ تِسَعَ عَشَرَ He said 19 of them
قُلْتُ I then asked what was the first
one you participated in?
So then he said that in Ashir and
then afterwards he asked how many battles did
you join in total?
With Rasul Allah ﷺ So to that Zayd
ibn Al-Arqam رضي الله عنه responded سَبَعَ
عَشَرَ 17 of them the Prophet ﷺ participated
in 19 I wasn't there for two of
them.
Most likely the two that he was referring
to Badr and Uhud However after this he
was with Rasul Allah ﷺ Zayd ibn Al
-Arqam رضي الله عنه Was a keen student
of Rasul Allah ﷺ and would narrate from
the Prophet ﷺ As much as he could
and I say this because towards the first
part of his life.
He would narrate abundantly Later on in life
when his memory became weak and he became
very old He will then hold back and
he would say that attributing anything to Rasul
Allah ﷺ is a very big deal Saying
something and connecting it to Nabi ﷺ is
Shadeed.
It's too heavy on me.
So he wouldn't hold his words He says
Zayd رضي الله عنه that in the early
days of Islam In Salah people were permitted
to make gestures and even say a few
words to one another if there was a
need كان الرجل يكلم صاحبه على عهد النبي
ﷺ في الحاجة في الصلاة So they would
raise their hands sometimes to greet the other
person Someone sneezed they may have said ارحمك
الله to that person, warned them of something
حتى نزلت هذه الآية وقوموا لله قانتين فأمرنا
بالسكوت Until the ayah was revealed وقوموا لله
قانتين stand in front of Allah ﷻ with
stillness With focus with presence After that day
No one made any gestures and all of
these small words that we would exchange at
the time of necessity in Salah Came to
an end and therefore you'll see the ulema
prohibit any sort of conversation in Salah Any
sort of gesturing even if you get a
phone call, you don't pick up a call
then say it's Salah.
You don't do that You can silence it,
but that's it.
No texting that person that I'm in Salah
They hold back وقوموا لله قانتين likewise Zaid
Ibn Al-Arqam رضي الله عنه says That
one of the famous duas we heard from
Rasulullah ﷺ This is one of those duas
that's full of so much meaning For those
of you who don't have this dua memorized
you should Refer back to the recording note
it down word by word and have it
memorized.
It's a very impactful dua Full of so
much khayr, so many good things to ask
from Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى The Prophet ﷺ
would make this dua and I'll jump to
the end of the narration before I share
the actual dua He says كان رسول الله
ﷺ يُعَلِّمُنَا هُنَّ وَنَحْنُ نُعَلِّمُكُمُهُنَّ The Prophet ﷺ
taught us this dua Word by word we
were trained by the Prophet of Allah ﷺ
to make this dua and today I pass
this on to you this gift on to
you that you will also memorize these words
and include this in your dua The dua
اللهم إني أعوذ بك من قلب لا يخشع
ونفس لا تشبع وعلم لا ينفع ودعوة لا
يستجاب لها In this dua the Prophet ﷺ
would seek protection from Allah from being incapable
Incapacitated you're in a situation where there is
action required of you, but you're not doing
anything.
اللهم إني أعوذ بك من العجز والكسل Oh
Allah save me from being lazy Because once
a person becomes lazy Then they become their
own enemy When you procrastinate and push things
off the great dreams you have The great
ambitions you have will remain nothing more than
that dreams and ambitions.
They won't translate into action You'll only have
stories to tell That so-and-so person
used to do this and maybe when I
was young and I actually had ambition and
went out of my way And made sacrifice
and pushed myself to my limits.
I was able to accomplish these things but
today Because of laziness we enter into a
coma We're not doing anything Earlier today.
I was speaking to some of the students
in the year five class and we made
the NPC reference You guys know what NPCs
are Yes Right NPC is a part of
the game that has no real purpose.
Just one thing You go to that street
and that one NPC is walking that same
road again and again They're not really integral
to the part of the story.
They're not really played by anyone.
It's a non player, right?
This is not this person is not controlled.
So the idea is that there is no
purpose no focus and that's what we've become
today There's no purpose and goal to people
It's like a pre-programmed Robot that goes
from home to work work to home somewhere
in the middle stop over in the bathroom
and a quick meal and that's the end
of it and All of this happened as
a result of us Turning away from Allah
subhanahu wa'ta'ala Because we said there is
a greater system that is liberal and it
has greater purpose and it has greater meaning
in reality It's a capitalist system money talks
You play your role to grow the economy
and then do whatever you want to We
don't care beyond that.
Make sure you work pay your taxes and
move on Liberation is connecting yourself to Allah
and freeing yourself from these worldly shackles People
who do this become timeless their mention remains
The Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam made this
Dua.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal ajzi wal
kasal Wal harami wal juban Haram is to
reach a very old age Where then not
only that but you begin to lose control
over your own memory and lose control over
your limbs An extreme place of weakness Wal
juban And to become a coward that I'm
not able to speak my truth or do
something about it Because when you become a
coward that means now regardless of whether you
accept to be a slave or a slave
or not you are a slave Someone has
too much influence over you Someone's fear is
in your heart There is a famous hadith
of Rasulullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam Where Nabi
salallahu alayhi wa sallam said kama tada'al
aakilatu ila qas'atiha fa qala qairun min
qillatin nahnu yawma idhin qala la bal antum
yawma idhin kateen walakinnakum ghutha'un ka ghutha
'i assail wala yanzi'annallahu min qulubi adubikumul
mahabata minkum wala yakhdifanna fi qulubikumul wahn The
Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam said A time
will come that you will be so humiliated
So sahabi asked the Messenger of Allah Will
it be because min qillatin nahnu yawma idhin
Will we be humiliated as an ummah because
we will be few in numbers qala la
bal antum yawma idhin kateen No, you won't
be few in numbers You will actually have
great numbers You will be in the billions
walakinnakum ghutha'un ka ghutha'i assail There
will be no weight to you like dirt
and froth You know the dirt that rides
the waves and rides the water It has
no value, no appreciation It goes wherever the
wave goes walakinnakum ghutha'un ka ghutha'i
assail How will this happen?
wala yanzi'annallahu min qulubi aduwikumul bahabata minkum
Allah will remove your fear from your enemy's
hearts Your enemy will no longer fear you
They will be able to play you like
a puppeteer does his thing These people are
too weak, they don't believe in anything They
don't stand for anything meaningful wala yakhdifanna fi
qulubikumul wahn And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
will place al-wahn in your heart qaloo
wama al-wahnu ya rasool Allah They said,
O Messenger of Allah What is this wahn
that Allah will place in our hearts?
Rasool Allah ﷺ said hubb al-dunya wa
karahiyat al-mawt Love for the dunya and
fear of death You will be deeply in
love with this dunya And when that happens
You can claim to be as free as
you want to You are no longer free
You can say that I am courageous and
I am this And I am independent None
of that matters Once wahn enters into your
heart mal-wahn qala hubb al-dunya wa
karahiyat al-mawt wal-bukhl The Prophet ﷺ
would seek protection from Being stingy and miserly
That you hold money back Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala didn't give us wealth to hold
it back He gave it to spend Spend
in good causes There is so much good
waiting to happen In the world surrounding us
It needs a little stimulation And some of
that stimulation involves confidence Some of it involves
support Some of it involves du'as But
a good part of that stimulation is also
financial stimulation That if you take care of
someone today You help someone today You help
a cause today It will then roll forward
And bring into existence A massive impact on
humanity So don't be bakheel Oh Allah we
seek protection from you In the punishment of
the grave Oh Allah give my soul, give
my heart, give my inner being Righteousness And
purify it You are the most superior of
the ones that purify it Look how the
Prophet ﷺ made du'as for those first
things And then immediately turned to the nafs
How does a person Protect themselves from the
first part of that du'a By a
pure heart Oh Allah I seek protection in
you From your heart that does not fear
Fear is important You don't need to fear
people Fear Allah Fear the consequences of your
actions Fear the consequences of your statements Oh
Allah give me a heart that fears Oh
Allah save me From an ego that is
never satisfied From an inner hunger That can
never be satiated A knowledge that is of
no benefit It will gain knowledge It's just
a part of the experience of humanity Of
being in this dunya You will learn Someone
will learn one thing Another person will learn
something else Someone will learn the technique of
cutting an onion Another person will learn the
technique of Putting a tire on and removing
a tire Everyone learns something You learn something
in college You learn something at home You
learn something in the market Oh Allah give
us knowledge that benefits us And for Muslims
that means in the dunya and also in
the akhira وَدَعْوَةٍ لَّا يُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا Oh Allah
do not deprive me of acceptance Such a
beautiful du'a Of Rasulullah ﷺ That Zaid
bin Arqam ﷺ teaches us May Allah ﷻ
give us tawfiq To memorize his du'a
And to bring it into our hearts Zaid
bin Arqam ﷺ Was not only a great
scholar And a person of seniority He was
someone that had a lot of empathy Companions
would turn to him And they would talk
to him When they were lonely When they
were sad As I mentioned He towards a
later part in his life Relocated to Kufa
Which is in modern day Iraq While he
was there At that same time The tragic
incident of Harrah occurred in Madinah Marawarah Which
we covered in detail in our previous Dars
The unfortunate massacre that happened in Madinah One
of the saddest events in the history of
that city Where the Yazidi army Attacked Madinah
Marawarah And openly killed Sahaba And they butchered
them There was blood everywhere Last week we
spoke about this incident in some detail And
I laid out the context to it And
the background to why it happened Anas ibn
Malik ﷺ Was one of the people who
lost a lot of family members He was
from Madinah Many of his family members and
relatives And close people died During that attack
He was grieved And he was very sad
He wrote a letter to Zaid ibn Arqam
ﷺ And he informed him of The grief
and sorrow that he had in his heart
The pain That they were Sahaba of Rasulullah
ﷺ They saw the Prophet's smile They lived
together They studied with the Prophet of Allah
ﷺ They prayed with him ﷺ And today
that very same city is attacked And the
blood of the Sahaba is flowing in the
streets of Madinah Zaid ibn Arqam ﷺ Responded
back to him I know your heart is
heavy But let me share with you a
glad tiding From Allah ﷻ For I heard
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying وَاغْفِرْ
لِلنِّسَاءِ الْأَنصَارِ وَلِلنِّسَاءِ أَبْنَاءِ الْأَنصَارِ أبصار Sorry
وَلِلنِّسَاءِ أَبْنَاءِ الْأَنصَارِ وَلِلنِّسَاءِ أَبْنَاءِ أَبْنَاءِ
الْأَنصَارِ O Allah!
Forgive the Ansar Their children and their grandchildren
And forgive the women of the Ansar Their
children and their grandchildren I heard Rasulullah ﷺ
making this Dua Yes, it is sad that
great men and women were lost, but Rasulullah
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam made du'a for them.
He made du'a for that city and
for their progeny.
Because Zaid Ibn Al-Arqam Radiallahu Anhu was
very close to the Ahlul Bayt.
He was very near to them.
He had a close relationship with Ali Radiallahu
Anhu and Sayyidina Ali Ibn Abi Talib Radiallahu
Anhu loved him a lot too.
So when Ali Radiallahu Anhu relocated the Darul
Silafah during his period from Madinah Munawwara to
Kufa, Iraq, Zaid Ibn Al-Arqam Radiallahu Anhu
moved along with him.
And everyone knew that he was close to
Ali Radiallahu Anhu.
Ali Radiallahu Anhu was intelligent.
He realized that there were fitnas ahead because
now the first civil war was at the
brink of occurring and he didn't want to
bring those armies to Madinah.
He didn't want war to happen in Madinah.
So to protect the city and to manage
this very complicated situation, he relocated to Iraq,
took it there.
And he took it to Kufa, which was
at a distance from Sham where Muawiyah Radiallahu
Anhu's army was, but it wasn't too far
as well because if he had gone to
Yemen or if he went over to another
corner of the empire, those in between would
be caught in war.
And this would become a bigger affair than
it needed to be.
So he took his Khilafah up to Kufa,
closer to Muawiyah Radiallahu Anhu also to keep
an eye and to negotiate and communicate with
the other side.
They were advocating on behalf of Uthman Radiallahu
Anhu and Ali Radiallahu Anhu was also advocating
on behalf of Uthman Radiallahu Anhu.
They were both doing the same thing, just
different perspectives on how to reach a common
outcome, a common goal they wanted.
One time Zayd Ibn Arafat Radiallahu Anhu was
with some companions and one person came and
said to him, Faqala Hussain, Ya Zayd, Laqita
khairan katira wala ra'ayta khairan katira ra
'ayta Rasulullah wa sami'ata hadithahu wa ghazawta
ma'ahu wa sallayta khalfahu fa hadithna ma
sami'ata min Rasulullah wa shahidta ma'ahu
You saw the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
You heard from the Prophet of Allah.
You've experienced so much good in your life.
Oh Zayd, tell us what you heard from
the Prophet of Allah.
Share those moments with us.
Zayd Radiallahu Anhu said, Kaburat sinni I've become
old.
And the time that you speak of was
long ago, decades ago.
Wa naseetu ba'dal ladhi kuntu a'eet ar
Rasulillahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam And a lot of
what I experienced with the Prophet of Allah,
my memory fails to recall it.
It's been so long.
I'm old now in age.
So what I narrate to you from the
Prophet of Allah, accept it.
And what I do not narrate to you,
don't force me to narrate it.
What I remember clearly, I will share that
with you.
And it was a statement of his that
made the number of narrations that he narrates
fewer.
His riwayat are somewhere between 90 to 100
riwayat that we have for him.
Not that he didn't have more to share,
but towards the end of his life, he
was more worried.
He was more concerned that I share something
and wrongly attribute it to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam.
This is a profound lesson for us all.
That when we say, Qala Allah, Qala Rasul
we need to be sure of what we're
saying.
Think about it carefully.
Ask yourself, can I be confident in saying
that this is something that was stated by
the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
People in today's world don't give any value
to these statements.
They make them up as they go along
just to support their argument while discussing affairs
with their friends or in their WhatsApp chats.
This is not how the Deen is used.
Study it properly, understand it properly, relate it
with responsibility.
Otherwise, people will wrongly narrate, falsely attribute and
oppressively implement those beautiful statements of Rasulullah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala protect us.
What I do not narrate to you, do
not force me to narrate it.
Then he said, one day Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam addressed us.
Khatabana Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Fahamidallah wa atna alaihi.
He started off by praising Allah.
And then he said, O people, I am
a human being.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, innama ana bashar.
I am a human being.
And it's very possible the messenger of my
Rab will reach me soon and I will
answer his call.
Everyone is limited in their time in this
dunya.
May Allah will send an angel to me.
Fa ujeeb and I will accept his call.
Wa inni taarikun feekum taqaleen.
I'm leaving behind two things with you.
First is the book of Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala.
In it is guidance and light.
And then the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam encouraged
the people to connect and engage with the
Quran.
The second thing, my family.
I'm leaving my family behind.
Follow them, take care of them, and be
mindful of them.
So Hussain, the narrator, he says, O Zaid,
the family of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, Ya
Zaid, wa min ahli baytihi alaysat nisa'ahu?
Aren't the wives of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
what is being referred to in the statement
of the Prophet of Allah when he says,
look after my family?
Qala inna nisa'ahu min ahli baytihi.
He said, yes, this is true.
The ahlul bayt, the family of Rasulullah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam, is referring to his wives.
However, it also refers to anyone from his
family that it was haram to accept sadaqah.
From the family of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
anyone that was prohibited to receive sadaqah is
included in this term, ahlul bayt.
He then asked, who are these people?
To that, Zaid Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, ahlu
abbas, the family of Abbas Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
wa ahlu ali, the family of Ali Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam, wa ahlu aqeel, the family of
Aqeel Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, wa ahlu jaafar.
By the way, Ali, Jaafar, and Abbas, oh,
sorry, Ali, Aqeel, and Jaafar were all children
of Abbas.
So this is taqsis ba'da ta'meem.
First he mentioned, sorry, first he mentioned Abbas
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, it's not taqsis ba'da ta'meem,
I apologize.
First he mentioned Abbas Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, and
then on the other side, he mentioned the
three sons of Abu Talib, Ali Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam, Aqeel Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, and Jaafar.
All of these people are considered to be
ahlul bayt.
One time, Mughaira bin Shu'ba, Mughaira bin
Shu'ba, during the political divide between Ali,
and Mu'awiyah, participated with Mu'awiyah, in
the opposite side of Ali, and Zayd ibn
al-Arqam.
Naala Mughaira ibn Shu'ba bin Ali, so
one day he said something inappropriate, aggressive about
Ali, Mughaira bin Shu'ba, fa qala Zayd
ibn al-Arqam, qada alimta anna rasool Allah
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam kana yanhaa an sabbil mawta,
fa lima tasubbu Aliyan wa qad mat?
Zayd ibn al-Arqam spoke up, this shows
us his courage, that even though the person
that he was talking to was another sahabi,
but he said to him, don't you know,
you know this, you're a sahabi of the
prophet of Allah, that rasool Allah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam forbade us from speaking ill of someone
that has passed away.
So regardless of what the politics were, regardless
of whether who we think was right or
wrong, now that Ali radiallahu anhu has departed
from this world, just based off of this
riwayah of the prophet of Allah, alayhi salatu
wassalam, you should hold your tongue back from
saying anything against Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib
radiallahu anhu.
Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, who was one of these
Umayyad generals, he one day came to Zayd
ibn al-Arqam radiallahu anhu, and he said
to him, ma'a hadith tuhaddithuhaa wa tarweehaa
rasoolillah wa laa najiduhaa fi kitaabillah tuhaddithu anna
lahoo hawdhan fil jannah.
Ubaidullah bin Ziyad said to him, that you
narrate these things and attribute them to the
prophet of Allah, but when we read the
Quran, we find no mention of them.
You say that there is a pond in
the hereafter that the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
will quench the thirst of his ummah with?
You're saying there is some hawd?
But we read the Quran and there is
no mention of the hawd.
Zayd ibn al-Arqam radiallahu anhu responded back,
qad haddathanaahu rasoolallahi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam wa wa
'adanaahu.
The prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam did tell us
about this hawd, and he promised us that
there would be a hawd in the hereafter
awaiting us.
Ubaidullah bin Ziyad was disrespectful, and unfortunately not
the best human being.
Qala kadhabta, walakinnaka shayfun qad kharifta.
He said, no, you are lying.
You are an old man who's lost his
mind.
You don't know what you're saying.
Zayd ibn al-Arqam radiallahu anhu says, qad
sami'atuhu udhunaaya wa wa'aahu qalbi min
rasoolillah.
My ears heard it from the prophet of
Allah, and my heart protected it.
He's referring to his brain, that your brain
has gone bad.
So he said, my heart preserved it.
My ears heard it from the prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam.
And I also heard Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
saying, not only do I narrate that, let
me tell you something else I heard the
prophet saying.
man kadhaba alayya muta'amidan fal yatabawwa maqadahu
min al-naar.
Whoever lies upon me intentionally should find his
seat in the fire of *.
wa ma kadhabtu ala rasoolillah.
And I did not make any false attribution
to Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Zayd radiallahu anhu says that one day, while
the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was alive, I
became sick.
My eyes were hurting.
Couldn't see properly.
He was close to the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam.
He was one of those people that Nabi
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would check up on every
now and then.
So when Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam noticed that
he wasn't there, he came to visit.
fa'adani rasoolullah.
The prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam came to visit
him.
Zayd was lying down in pain.
The prophet sat next to him.
And at that point, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
said, ara'ita ya Zayd, inkarat aynaka lima
bihima kayfa tasna?
Oh Zayd, let's say what you're experiencing right
now were to prolong.
Let's say you continue to feel this pain
in your eyes.
What would you do?
Beautiful question for us all.
If the pain you're feeling right now, physical
pain, emotional pain, mental health pain that you're
being squashed under, that you see there's no
exit from.
If this were to continue, what would you
do?
Inshallah, Allah blesses us all with aafiyah and
shifa.
But this is a question of iman.
What would you do if Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la were to continue testing
you?
Qultu, Zayd radiAllahu anhu said, I responded to
the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, asbiru wa ahtasib,
I will be patient and I will seek
my reward with Allah.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la never
tests someone beyond their ability.
When you are faced with a calamity, if
you remain firm and you remain patient and
you connect yourself to Allah and you remain
positive in your thoughts that my Allah will
not test me beyond my ability, you will
find that strength.
And with time, what you can't even imagine,
inshallah, will become easy for you.
You just need to give it some time.
Don't be hasty, don't be quick.
Don't abandon your faith or your belief.
I have met parents that lost children, their
own kids.
And a few days later they say, I'm
confident I will be okay.
Because Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
would not test me if I wasn't able
to bear this.
The pain doesn't disappear.
However, you learn to move forward.
You learn to find the strength to carry
that weight.
How do you carry that weight?
You just remind yourself, I'm in Allah's hands,
He's gonna take care of it.
My ajar is with Allah.
My iman is witnessed by Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la.
The malaikah are singing the praise of such
a person that look at that person's sabr.
Asbiru wa ahtasib.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said to him,
now this is the glad tidings for those
of you that are struggling with your patience.
Qala in fa'alta dakhalta al-jannah.
If you remain patient and trust Allah, you
will be in jannah.
Wa fee lafdhin idh talqallaha wala dhanbalaka.
In that scenario, you will meet Allah and
there will be no sin in your deeds
at all.
Your book will be empty.
You will stand in front of Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la with only good
deeds.
Everything wrong that you did, Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la will wash it away.
In one narration, when Isa narrates regarding her
father, this is why you can find in
the Musnad of Abu Ya'la, but regardless
of what chain of the second part you
search, there is some da'f and some
weakness in it.
She narrates regarding her father, anna abaaha zayda
ibn arqama amia ba'da mawtin nabi Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam thumma raddullahu alaihi basrahu.
That after the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam passed
away for a short window, her father Zayd
ibn al-Arqam Radiallahu Anhu lost his sight.
Just like Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told him
that a day may come that Allah will
test you like this.
But by the fadhal and favor of Allah
Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la, his eyesight
returned as well.
Zayd ibn al-Arqam Radiallahu Anhu also participated
in the battle of Muta, which was against
the Romans.
As I mentioned, Abdullah bin Rawaha Radiallahu Anhu
was an uncle to Zayd ibn al-Arqam.
So Abdullah bin Rawaha Radiallahu Anhu was appointed
as one of the generals of that army,
that he may be one of the people
that would have to take lead for the
Muslims.
And he was one of the soldiers.
So he said to his nephew, let's go
on this battle together.
He took Zayd ibn al-Arqam.
On the way, Zayd ibn al-Arqam Radiallahu
Anhu heard his uncle reading poetry as they
were traveling through the deserts.
He was reading poetry, he was a poet.
And the poetry was him desiring shahada.
He wanted martyrdom.
Zayd ibn al-Arqam Radiallahu Anhu became upset
that his uncle was saying things like this
for him.
It was hard.
He didn't have his father around.
So when Abdullah bin Rawaha Radiallahu Anhu noticed
he was upset, he took his whip and
pointed it at him.
He said, what's your problem?
I'm just trying to get my way to
Jannah.
Stay away from me.
I want my way to Jannah.
You leave me alone.
And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
accepted that dua of Abdullah bin Rawaha Radiallahu
Anhu.
And he was blessed with the honor of
martyrdom in the battle of Muta.
Now let's go back to the battle of
Banu Mustaliq or also known as Al-Muraysiyah.
When referring to it as Banu Mustaliq, this
is because, Ibn Hajar Rahimullah comments, this is
because this was an attribution to the tribe
that lived in that area.
When we use the second name for this
battle, Al-Muraysiyah, Ibn Hajar points out, this
is due to a well, a very well
known water source in that area.
And because of that well, that well was
called Al-Muraysiyah.
Therefore, the expedition was also called Al-Muraysiyah.
When did this battle occur?
Some historians have said that it occurred in
the fourth year after Hijrah.
Others have said it was fifth year.
And some say it was a sixth year
after migration.
Many of the Ahlus Seer have placed it
between Uhud and Khandaq.
Somewhere between Uhud and Khandaq.
Wallahu a'la misalaan.
Bang.
Bang.
What happened here?
A group of people from this region began
to send messages to the surrounding tribes.
Let's gather together and attack Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi
Wasallam in Madina Munawwara.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam heard about this,
that some people were gathering together, there were
whispers.
Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam had his ear close
to the ground.
While he was leading Salah, while he was
teaching them Du'as, while he was teaching
them Quran, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was
alert and aware of what was happening in
Madina and also outside of Madina.
When the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam heard about
this chatter, he immediately sent a Sahabi by
the name of Buraidah bin Hussayb radiallahu anhu.
Go and find out what's going on.
Buraidah shows up to this Banu Mustalaq, this
tribe.
They see him and they say, buddy, what
are you doing here?
Who are you?
He said, well, I am one of my
people.
I heard that you guys are gathering soldiers
to attack the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
They said, yes, we are.
He said, okay, let me gather my people
and I will come meet you here.
They said, how many people do you have?
He said, I have a lot of people,
don't worry.
We'll come and meet you guys here.
They said, go.
He rushed off to Madina Munawwara, to his
people.
And he told the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
that these guys are preparing an army.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam immediately announced, we
must attack them before they come towards us.
700 people prepared themselves for marching.
30 of them had horses.
This happened in the month of Sha'ban,
in the fifth year of Hijrah, based off
of one of the more common positions.
What was different about this battle?
What was different about this expedition?
This was one of the first times the
hypocrites joined in the battle.
They were there.
Why were the hypocrites there?
This is a big discussion.
Some say to make up for their abandonment
in the battle of Uhud.
They abandoned the Muslims in the battle of
Uhud and many people died.
So they picked up a negative image.
People look at them as cowards and started
speaking ill of them.
So they had to make up for it.
They also joined the Muslims.
This became a very big problem because two
incidents happened in this battle and both of
them were provoked by this group of people,
the hypocrites.
One was the accusation against Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha
radiAllahu anha.
And the second one, we will discuss that.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was traveling with
the Sahaba.
And while they were going, the people of
Banu Mustaliq had sent a spy to go
and check on the Muslims.
That guy was coming to spy on them.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was traveling with his
army of 700.
They saw the spy.
The Prophet said, fuck it, let's go.
Go grab that guy.
They grabbed him.
And then he was executed for trying to
spy on the Muslims.
Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and the Sahaba arrived
at Muraisiyah, at Banu Mustaliq.
And they attacked their opposition at a time
where they were not prepared for war.
Wa hum ghafiloon.
It was an easy victory.
One Sahabi was martyred in this battle.
And that was a result of, he was
a Muhajir companion, and he was martyred as
a result of misfire.
There was an Ansari companion who thought it
was enemy.
He fired an arrow.
The Muhajir got hit.
He passed away.
It was a very complicated situation.
What we call qatal khata.
Now, it was during this expedition as well
that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam marries Juwayriya
radiyaAllahu anha.
She was one of the wives of Nabi
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Very righteous lady.
It was during Muraisiyah that she married Nabi
Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
So the first thing that I want you
to remember is that there was one Sahabi
passed away and that was at the hands
of one of the Muslims.
It was accidental.
The second thing that happened was the Ansar
and Muhajirun, they were trying to give their
animals water from the same well, and two
of them got into an argument.
One Ansari, one Muhajir got into a little
spat.
Started going at each other.
The Muhajir, in response to the dispute with
the Ansar, faqasa'al muhajiriyu al-ansara.
Qasa'a means to hit the behind with
the hand or leg.
So he hit that person from behind.
The Ansari was very mad that he was
hit in the middle of this dispute.
So there was tension from one accidental death.
And here, these two people had a little
bit of a spat going on at the
well.
The Ansari then announced, Oh Ansar, come to
my support.
The Muhajir announced, Oh Muhajir, come to my
support.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam overheard these two
saying things like this.
And he said, maa baalu da'wal jahiliya.
What are these pre-Islamic calls you're talking
about your tribes?
Islam is greater than tribes.
Earlier today, I was speaking with some of
the instructors at the seminary, and we were
just talking.
And I pointed out one thing that there
is an interesting observation.
If you look at the history of Islam
and Muslim scholarship, in the earlier period, in
the first century, what you'll notice is a
lot of the nisbas are tribal.
Abu Dhar'al, Ghaifari.
You guys understand?
So-and-so Ansari, so-and-so from
this tribe.
But as Islam expands, when you begin to
know just in those names, if you study
the biographical works, you will notice this.
The nisba goes from tribal to regional.
Dimashqi, Asfahani, Bukhari, Samarkandi.
They were able to grow out of their
tribal identities into a more unified Muslim identity,
which was based off of their regions, which
ultimately were all Islamic.
The Prophet ﷺ did not like that they
took these calls of tribes, that this is
my tribe, that's your tribe, let's get up
against each other, let's go to war with
one another.
Dr. Ross, actually, he had a chart for
this.
One of his colleagues, I believe, did a
study of Imam Zahabi, rahmatullahi alayhi wa s
-satarih, and pulled all of the nisbas, and
showed, he put it into a program, and
showed that there was actually a timeline to
establish this.
That if you study the timeline, you will
see a decrease in reference through nisba of
tribe, and an increase in nisba towards region.
Small little point, but there is a faida
for someone who can appreciate it.
Ala kulli hal.
The Prophet ﷺ didn't like this call of
tribe, one tribe against another tribe.
The Prophet ﷺ said, what happened?
He said, they said, oh Messenger of Allah,
the Muhajir, he hit the Ansari.
The Prophet ﷺ said, leave it, this is
not a...
Innaha muntina.
This has a foul stench.
The way you guys are speaking, the way
you're handling this, this is not how we
handle things as Muslims.
Li yansuril rajulu asaahum.
Zaliman al-matruman.
You should stand to help your brother if
he is the oppressor or oppressed.
If he is an oppressor, then prevent him
from the oppression.
And if he is the oppressed, then help
him against the oppressor.
That don't hurt this person.
We stand by the side of this individual.
If the Ansari was oppressed, then forget Ansar
and Muhajir.
Stand with the...
Nabi ﷺ changes the language.
Ansar and Muhajir are meaningless in this scenario.
The phrasing should be zalim and madnoon.
Let's use Quran and Sunnah and figure out
who is the zalim, help him to stop
zulm and figure out who's the madnoon and
prevent him from being oppressed anymore.
How magnificent is this?
This is what you call tarbiyah.
This is what you call zihin saazi.
Like how you make the minds of people,
changing the paradigm altogether.
Don't think of it like this, Hyderabadi, Pakistani,
Bangalore, and Nepali, forget all that.
Think of it from a whole new light
of zalim and madnoon.
Nabi ﷺ didn't even bring it to muslim
and ghayr muslim.
He brought the conversation down to zalim and
madnoon.
The oppressor and the oppressed.
Subhanallah, la ilaha illallah, beautiful.
Now, that matter was done.
The Ansar and the Muhajir went back to
their places, everyone got their tarbiyah moment, they
were okay.
Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Saloon who was the
leader of the hypocrites, wasn't there to witness
the interaction but later on heard about it
when he was surrounded by some of his
buddies.
Someone came and told him, man, there was
a kickoff over there.
Abdullah bin Ubaid bin Saloon, he's like, man,
you're breathing that happened?
And a Muhajir hit one of ours?
Awa qad fa'aluha?
Qad naafaruna wa kaafaruna fee biladina?
That they've overcome us in our own city?
Now there are more muhajirun in Medina than
there are Ansar?
illa kama qaral awwal This reminds me, this
is Ubaid, he's Abdullah bin Ubaid.
This reminds us of the old saying, sammin
kalbaka ya'kulk Feed your dog, one day
it'll come and bite you.
He was speaking of the Prophet ﷺ and
the Sahaba like this.
ama wallahi la in raja'na ilal madina
la yufrijanna al-a'azzu minha al-adhal
By Allah, when we come back to Medina,
the honourable from us, the real residents of
Medina, we will remove these disgraceful immigrants that
have come and polluted our city.
He then turned to his people and said
to those that were sitting around him, I
need you all to stop spending any money
on the Prophet and the Muslims.
Let's financially boycott them.
law amsaktum ma'anhum ma bi-aydiikum la
tahawwalu ila ghayri da'rikum Stop spending on
them, stop supporting these people, these Muslims and
these muhajirun, they will have to leave Medina.
falatunfiqoo alaa man ainda rasoolillahi hatta yanfadhu Don't
spend on them, don't support them and they
will all abandon the Prophet ﷺ.
These people will all fall apart.
Zayd al-Arqam was a young child.
Bear in mind, the battle of Uhud was
just two years ago.
He was rejected for participation because of his
young age.
He heard the full conversation.
He went to his uncle and said, that
guy said something that is beyond imagination.
He said things that he should be gravely
punished for.
Rebellious statements like this against the Prophet, causing
divide in the community, encouraging people to walk
away from the covenants of Medina Munawwara.
We can't do that.
The uncle came with Zayd al-Arqam to
the Prophet ﷺ.
fathakarahu ammi li rasoolillah and told the Prophet
ﷺ everything in detail.
My nephew heard all of this.
Who was this uncle?
It was Sa'd ibn Ubadah.
Many of the ulema point out here, Sa'd
ibn Ubadah wasn't his uncle, but he was
one of the leaders of the tribe.
So he was the one that spoke to
Rasool Allah ﷺ.
And here we learn an adab, that if
a young person has something important to say,
instead of saying it yourself, in particular, if
it has communal impact, if it has a
political impact, if it has a greater impact,
you should appoint someone of seniority to speak
on your behalf.
That let this person be the one that
breaks the news so they can handle the
tension, so they can handle the pressure, so
they don't cave in, so they state the
facts properly, right?
A younger person may feel overwhelmed in that
moment.
He comes in, and also the adab.
There's just an adab built in here.
Umar رضي الله عنه, when he heard the
statement that Abdullah ibn Ubayy said this, he
became very angry, and he said, O Messenger
of Allah, I'm gonna go kill that guy.
دعني أضرب عنق هذا المنافق.
I'm gonna go blow that guy's head off.
Nabi ﷺ said, دعه, don't do anything.
لا يتحدث الناس أن محمد يقتل أصحابه.
We know that he's a hypocrite.
Outsiders don't know that.
He has verbally said, لا إله إلا الله.
If we do anything to him, then people
will say Muhammad kills his own people.
They'll be afraid to become Muslim.
They will think that we are killing our
own.
Don't do that.
Let it go.
The Prophet ﷺ had to clarify the issue
because the claim was too big.
He called Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul in
and said, Did you say this?
Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul immediately denounced it.
He said, I did not say anything.
Wallahi, I didn't say it.
The kid's lying.
The Prophet ﷺ in that moment accepted what
Abdullah ibn Ubayy had to say and turned
away Zaid ibn Al-Artham ﷺ.
Zaid ibn Al-Artham ﷺ, he says that,
when my uncle told me, when Sa'ad
said to me that the Prophet ﷺ did
not accept my statement, فَبَكَيْتُ فَبَكَيْتُ I just
started crying that the Prophet of Allah rejected
my words.
And then I said, I promise by Allah,
he said it.
I heard what he said.
He definitely said it.
Zaid ibn Al-Artham ﷺ says, Everyone in
the community began to blame me that did
you almost cause war?
Did you almost cause people's execution with this
statement?
Were you lying?
Did you make this up?
What were you intending?
فَأَصَابَنِي هَمٌ لَمْ يُصِبْنِي مِثْلُهُ قَتُّ I was
so depressed and sad that I had never
experienced this before in my life.
Everyone turned against me.
I remained in my tent.
Even my uncle came and said, you almost
got us all in trouble.
He was in his tent and he was
sad.
The Prophet ﷺ had to deal with this
very hot situation.
So he said to everyone there, the Ansar,
the Muhajirun, the hypocrites, everyone pack your bags,
we're going.
Generally, the Prophet ﷺ had times of the
day, they would travel in morning, evening.
This was an odd time.
The Prophet ﷺ displays his wisdom that if
they remained in that place, they would continue
to talk about this.
Getting them occupied in packing up, getting them
occupied in the travel, having them walk for
a long distance, kept them busy.
And people who get involved in Ziba, people
who get involved with nonsense tailbearing, they just
need a job.
Get them busy with something.
Go tell them to cook roti in the
kitchen.
Go tell them that you go clean the
tiles.
Go tell them, why don't you go clean
the garage up?
Go tell them, why don't you go cut
the grass?
Get these people busy somewhere.
When they get busy, they'll realize that life
is too short to waste on nonsense.
Right?
It's the beauty of a person's faith that
they do not involve in things that are
unnecessary.
Rasulullah ﷺ handles this situation.
Instead of going into full judicial mode and
asking for witnesses, the Prophet ﷺ cools the
issue down and says, everyone just start traveling.
Let's move away.
And sometimes you just need to move away
from fitna.
You have to walk away and then come
back to it at a later point.
Everyone packed up and they started traveling immediately.
The Prophet ﷺ was with the companions and
they were traveling.
And while they were going out of Medina,
while they were traveling, at one point they
stopped and Zaid ibn Artham r.a said,
I was sleeping at that time.
I put my head down to sleep because
of my sorrow.
I was so depressed and I was so
tired of crying that I thought, let me
just sleep a little bit.
Maybe this will help me overcome this.
فَقَدْ خَافَقْتُ بِرَأْسِ مِنَ الْحَمْدِ The Prophet ﷺ
came and sat next to me while I
was sleeping and he touched my ear like
this.
I woke up.
وَضَخِقَ فِي وَجْهِ Nabi ﷺ smiled at.
فَمَا كَانَ يَسُرُنِي أَنَّ لِي بِهَا الْقُلْدَ فِي
الدُّنْيَةِ That smile was so beautiful, exactly what
I needed to come over that pain of
mine that I wouldn't be able to trade.
I wouldn't be willing to trade it for
eternity in this world.
That one smile.
Nabi ﷺ left.
Abu Bakr came and said, what did the
Prophet say?
He said, I don't know.
Umar ﷺ came, what did the Prophet say?
I don't know.
He walked outside and when he stood in
front of Rasulullah ﷺ, the Prophet ﷺ looked
at Zaid al-Arqam ﷺ and an entire
surah of the Qur'an was revealed to
support his claim.
They made a claim that هُمُ الَّذِينَ
يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مِنْ عِندَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
حَتَّى يَنْطَضُوا They were the ones that said
They did not spend anything on the Muslims
so they all relieved They did say that,
the Qur'an tells us وَلِلَّهِ فَذَائِنُ السَّمَاوَاتِ
وَالْأَرْضِ There is no way you can boycott
and stop Allah and His Rasul Because the
treasures of the heavens and the earth belong
to Allah وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَا يَبْقَهُونَ These hypocrites
are too thick to understand that يَقُولُونَ They
say لَيَرَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلِ
That when we return to Medina, the disgrace
from us will remove the humiliated ones Referring
to the Prophet ﷺ and the Sahaba وَلِلَّهِ
الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَا
يَعْلَمُونَ The Prophet ﷺ then said to him
that indeed Allah has supported your truth, you
were right The Prophet ﷺ, however did not
punish the hypocrites Many Sahaba said, O Messenger
of Allah, we should do this, we should
do that The Prophet ﷺ said, let it
go They were exposed in the Qur'an,
Muslims will recite these verses till the end
of times If we do anything, it'll cause
too much of fitna in the community Abdullah
bin Ubaid bin Salul, son, Abdullah bin Abdullah
ﷺ He approaches the Prophet ﷺ and he
says, O Messenger of Allah, I know what
my father said And I also understand such
a statement deserves a punishment And a punishment
like this may even be execution If anyone
executes my father I know me, I will
kill that guy So I will have killed
a Muslim in return of someone that I
know my father is a kafir So with
a heavy heart I say Ya Rasulullah, if
you are going to command someone to execute
my father Let me be the person I
will take care of my father for what
he said and how disrespectful he was to
you Rasulullah ﷺ said Leave
him We will be kind to him as
long as he is with us Let it
go This was the patience and kindness of
Rasulullah ﷺ When they arrived to the gates
of Medina, everyone entered Abdullah bin Abdullah, the
Sahabi He stood at the gate with his
sword out And he said to his dad,
by Allah, you will not enter into Medina
until you apologize to the Prophet You said
that we are the honored ones and he
is humiliated.
I will prove that you are humiliated today
Prove it by seeking permission from him before
entering into his city, Medina Rasul ﷺ So
this entire incident it shows us the there
are so many lessons that we can derive
I also mentioned in this in this journey
the incident of the ifq also took place
Zayd ibn Arqam r.a played a very
important role.
An entire surah of the Qur'an was
revealed regarding him.
In closing Zayd r.a passed away in
the year 66 after hijrah.
Some historians including al-Waqidi claimed that it
was 67 after hijrah in the city of
Kufa May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala elevate
the maqam of Zayd ibn Arqam r.a
and allow us to learn from his beautiful
legacy So many lessons to learn.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow us
to implement them in our lives
