Just a couple
of notes or reminders before we start the.
One is
our
young students and whatnot, if you can come,
come forward. Don't Yeah, I'm talking to you.
Come forward, inshallah.
You'll receive more reward. Trust me. One day
you'll be like, like, that was a good
idea. So come forward unless you're like physically
injured
or Come forward as much as you can
inshaAllah.
You fill the first row first and then
the second ones. You're a small guy, so
you can actually fit in where other people
can't, InshaAllah.
The second thing is I was asked regarding
the
format of the khutba. When we have someone
from out of town,
oftentimes, I'll just have them give a talk
in the English language
first, and then we'll have the Arabic Khutba,
the ritual Arabic Khutba read,
from the pulpit, and I'll I'll usually read
it myself.
And people are confused as to what is
that, why is that happening, etcetera, etcetera.
And there's a difference of opinion amongst the
ulema regarding the validity of the khutba of
a traveler,
regarding the validity of the khutba of a
traveler.
And so
you okay, buddy?
If you're sick, you can go to the,
like nurses office and they come come forward
inshallah, unless you're okay. You're not
okay? No? Okay. That's fine then if you're
not okay.
The
there's a difference of opinion amongst their alama
about the validity of the khutba of a
traveler. And the difference of opinion has to
do with what? It has to do with
the fact that the the khutba, the jum'ah
is not even farbhan, the traveler.
And so if the,
the prayer is not Farbhan, the person
who's reading it,
then they the person behind them also cannot
pray behind them. Just like according to Imam
al Haynefa and Imam Malik,
a person who's reading a nafil prayer, a
person cannot read the the afar the prayer
behind the with the
intention of afar than the imam, his intention
is different. At any rate, it's somewhat of
a technical point, but the reason we do
it is to ensure the validity of your
Jumah Khutba.
Last Yomuqdi'amah
people show up and say, you knew better.
Why did you do this? Why did you
do that? Because all of these things are
an amana. So rest assured it's something that's,
inshaAllah, for all of our benefits. And, it's
something that even our our guests prefer,
because we're going to have a guest next
week, so I mentioned it right now.
All praises to Allah
All praises to Allah who guided us to
this, who guided us to Islam and to
iman,
and to his Mubarak house on this Mubarak
hour, on this Mubarak day, and we were
not to be guided, was it not that
Allah had guided us?
Oh, Allah, to you
is praise as is commensurate with the majesty
of your countenance and the greatness of your
authority.
Oh, Allah, we do not limit you with
any praise we can come up with ourselves,
rather we admit that you are the only
one who knows the true extent of your
praiseworthiness.
And may the peace and blessings of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala be upon Sayna Muhammad sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam. May the peace and blessings
of Allah ta'ala be upon him upon his
noble companions, and upon his pure wives, and
upon his Mubarak,
and blessed family and progeny, and upon all
of those who follow all of their way
until the day of judgment.
Allah ta'ala says in his book,
all you who believe,
be patient and enjoin one another to patience
and enjoin another one another to firmness, to
being firm in what they're doing.
And fear Allah
success, in order that you may be people
of happiness.
This is the commandment of Allah, subhanahu wa
ta'ala. And indeed, one of the
worst types of
that comes into
the month of Ramadan
in the ummah of Sayna Muhammad sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam is what? That it is a
month that is supposed to be a month
of courage,
and it becomes a month of cowardice.
It's a month that's supposed to be a
month of courage, and it becomes a month
of cowardice. It becomes a month in which
people oversleep.
It becomes a month in which people retreat
from their work, and they retreat from their
other obligations.
It becomes a month in which people,
cut corners. It becomes a month in which
people watch television in order to pass the
time. It is a month in which people
become they become cowards. Why? Because they're afraid.
If I didn't eat or drink something, or
if this didn't happen, that didn't happen,
I may not have the ability to do
what I'm supposed to do
regularly,
much less do more than what I'm supposed
to do. And although we accept the fact
that there are certain people medically for whom
the fast is very difficult,
There are certain people, if they don't eat
and drink, it literally becomes difficult for them
to do things that they normally would be
able to do. That is the minority of
people. That is the exception, not the rule.
We say regarding those people that what they
do during the fast is courageous.
Why? Because just the fact that they're fasting
in the first place is a big deal.
But that's who? That's our elders. That's people
who have
a special type of biochemistry which doesn't deal
well with,
deal well with fasting because of illness, chronic
or acute, because of, you know, whatever other
special circumstances.
For the rest of us who are not
the exception but who are the rule, who
are not the exception but who are the
rule, For us, brothers and sisters,
the expectation is not only that you should
do the same that you do in the
regular year,
the expectation is that you perform even better.
The expectation is you do even more. Why?
Because this is a month,
It comes in the hadith of the prophet
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. This is the month
in which the provision of the believer is
increased. This is the month in which Allah
puts barakah in your food, in your drink.
He puts barakah in your time. If you
are there to,
try to do something better than what you
regularly do, Allah
is there to put more barakah in that
time, more barakah in that space, more barakah
in that dollar,
more in that masjid, more in that home,
more in that car, in every single thing
that you have, every every gallon of gas
that you put in your car by which
you drive to the masjid. I know not
everybody's masjid is close to home. Allah is
there to put more barakah in it. It's
just a matter of you coming forward to
receive that barakah. Either you want to come
forward and receive it, or you don't want
to and you'll miss out. It's there. The
deal is there for everybody.
And this is not only there for Ramadan,
it's for the entire year, brothers and sisters.
It's the commandment of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
that you should be firm and you should
make other people firm. You should be patient
on the Haqq and you should make other
people patient on the Haqq. And this is
in fact one of the, one of the
key one of the key objectives and aims,
and missions, and mandates of revelation itself.
That Allah revealed this kitab, this Quran on
the heart of Sayedah Muhammad sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam
In order that he says,
so that we can make firm your heart.
So that we can make firm your heart,
so that we can increase you in in
in your in your in your,
bravery.
We can increase you in your courage. We
can increase you in your resolve.
My brothers and sisters, there is not a
shortage in money in the ummah, nor is
there a shortage in resources in the ummah,
nor is there a shortage in people in
the ummah, nor is there a shortage of
of of any other type of material thing
that we need or even spiritual thing that
we need except for what? Except for resolve.
The
anhu, there were people of Himma, there were
people of courage, and there were people of
resolve. There was no time when their resolve
was stronger
than in the month of Ramadan.
Lest a person think because fasting is happening,
a person should withdraw.
There was no time that the sahaba radiAllahu
ta'ala anhu,
the messenger of Allah sallallahu
alaihi wa sallam were more out there, were
more strong in their resolve, more strong in
their courage to get what they needed to
get done, done in other than in Ramadan.
There's no time that there was more than
that. Brothers and sisters, the Nabi salallahu alaihi
wa sallam, it said about him, that when
Ramadan came, he was more generous than the
than the wind than the wind. What does
that mean? It's something difficult to understand.
Something difficult to understand if you're not inside
the context. What's the context? The context is
if you're in sea in the desert,
and it's really hot, then what is the
wind? It's literally the most beautiful thing in
the world. Why? Because when you're sweating, the
wind blows by. It makes you feel cool,
even though it may be a 110, 120
degrees outside. It makes it more pleasant, the
wind does, than what? Then if a person
was in 90 degree heat, and in humidity,
and an absolute lack of wind. Then Rabbi
salallahu alaihi wasallam became even more generous. He
used he give even more. The The prophet
salallahu alaihi wasallam used to give everything he
had anyway.
He would be even more generous. How can
you be more generous than what he was
before? He would give even quicker. He would
give even quicker and even with less hesitation.
It would take him less time to just
take whatever he had and give it for
the sake of Allah. Why? Because this is
the time when Allah Ta'ala would give him
even more help, would give him even more
to give. The Nabi sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
in the Sahaba radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu,
2 events happened in the month of Ramadan,
and we forget about it. We forget about
it. What are those two events? 1 is
the Battle of Badr, and the other is
the Fathav Makkah, Mukarama,
the
conquest of Makkah Mukarama, which is al Fathul
Akbar. This is the greatest victory politically, tactically,
spiritually. This is the greatest victory of the
messenger of Allah
and Abdi Sahaba
After which, the entire Arabian Peninsula, in very
short order, falls into the orbit
of of of Islam, both spiritually and politically.
And both of these things happen when? During
the month of Ramadan.
Both of these things happen when? During the
month of Ramadan. What does it mean? It
means that the Messenger of Allah salallahu alaihi
wa sallam didn't stop thinking during that time.
The Messenger of Allah salallahu alaihi wa sallam
and his companions didn't
stop planning during that time. They didn't stop
discussing things between one another during that time.
They didn't start arranging stop arranging things with
each other during that time. The Sahaba
and whom weren't,
weren't,
loathe or scared of mobilizing at that time.
Rather, all of them were people who it's
so beautiful. It's so wonderful. How they were
all ready whatever service the dean needed, they
were all ready to,
give that service, render that service, and prosecute
that agenda, brothers and sisters.
The battle of Badr was such an occasion
was such an occasion that the messenger of
Allah salallahu alaihi wa sallam,
the bay'ah that the Ansar gave him, the
people of Madinah, the oath of allegiance that
they gave him was what? That we will
bring you into our city, we will accept
you, we will honor you, we will protect
you like we protect our women and children.
Meaning what? If they come for you, if
the mushrikeen come for you, we will defend
you with our property, and with our honor,
and with our lives.
But the bay the prophet salallahu alaihi wasalam
was a very scrupulous person
because the oath of allegiance was what? Was
that of protection.
And the the battle was one of offense,
not of defense, he didn't hold it against
the Ansar
He told the Muhajireen,
the
immigrants that came with him to Madinah Munawara,
let's go. Your your connection with me
is inseparable whatever the circumstances,
so let's go.
He asked the the ansar, what is your
opinion regarding this matter?
What is your opinion regarding this matter? And
from amongst them, there were those who said,
we are not going to be like
Banu Israeel with Musa, alayhis salam, who said
to him, alayhis salam, go, you and your
Lord. The 2 of you go and fight.
Verily, we are here. We're waiting for the
news of your victory. Said that we won't
be like that. We will be the ones
who will go with you wherever you go.
A second chieftain of the Ansaras asked, what
is your opinion regarding this? What is your
opinion regarding this matter? What did he say?
He said, You Rasool Allah, even if you
were to ride your horses into the ocean,
we would ride in after you.
The Arabs are not a seafaring people. Sayna
Umar,
he took the masura of the Sahaba, including
Sayna Abdul Abin Mas'ud,
when he was asked to commission a navy
for the Muslims, and he refused because they
were so,
they were they're they thought, we can get
what we need done on land. And the
the ocean, you know, riding ships and things
like that was something that was so bizarre
and strange for them. They said, no. We're
not going to do this. This is something
new. We don't wanna get involved in this
right now. It's only the reign of Sayna
Uthman
because the trust he gave to Sayna Mu'awiya
that the the the the first navy of
Islam was commissioned. Otherwise, it was something that
happens much later. The Arabs don't like the
ocean. So what are they saying? They're saying,
if you plunge into the abyss, into the
unknown, into the thing that we don't know
anything about, and the thing that we frankly
are afraid of, if you plunge in into
it, we're right there with you. We'll go
in with you, You Rasulullah.
Alaykha salatu wa salam.
We'll go in with you. When was this
said? This was said in Ramadan. This was
said when they are fasting.
This was said when they are fasting. This
is not something that they said at another
time. This is when they're hungry and thirsty.
Our fast is kept on the best of
food and on the largest quantities of food,
Our fast is kept on the best of
food and it's open on the best of
food. There are certain types of food we
keep for Ramadan. We don't even eat and
drink those things in other parts of Ramadan.
Yet yet,
our himna, our courage becomes so weak, it
flags it flags that, how am I gonna
get through the day? How am I gonna
get through my business? How am I gonna
do what I need to do? We're not
in the desert, There's no heat. We don't
have to do I mean, people people traditionally
used to walk a lot more than they
walk nowadays.
We should be afraid of not walking.
Why? Because it's destroying our health. But that's
another issue. We're so afraid of walking, people
will drive from one side of the parking
lot to the other side of the parking
lot if they're in a medium sized shopping
center and where they need to go is
on the other side of the shop, they'll
drive from one side of the parking lot
to the other. These are people when they
said, We will follow you, You Rasoolullah, into
the abyss, into the ocean if you ride
into your ocean. We will follow you wherever
you go. These are not people, brothers and
sisters, that are gonna sit in their car
and drive into the ocean. These are people
who are gonna walk themselves, and they're fasting.
And indeed, when the when the army of
Badr went out, the Messenger of Allah salallahu
alaihi wa sallam in fact had to force
them to break their fast.
It is a dispensation of the shari'ah that
a person when they're traveling, that they're not
allowed to fast, and he had to force
them. He said, no. We're going right now
for something that's going to require,
your physical exertion. So this is not an
appropriate time to fast. This is a time
in which Allah will reward you more for
not fasting because we have a bigger,
issue we have to tackle. We have a
bigger problem that we have to deal with
right now. You will, break your fast right
now. You will go back to Madinah and
make up your fast. Later on, those of
you who have the ability and those of
you who should perish in this endeavor, Allah
ta'ala will forgive you, and you will receive
the reward according to your intention. He had
to force them not to fast, radiya la
ta'ala anhu. Look at the Himma and look
at the resolve. Now look, brothers and sisters,
what happened?
Okay? Look what happened. Outnumbered 3 to 1
is one thing that most kids learn when
they learn Sira, that there was 300 some
odd
veterans of the battle of Badr, and there
are over a 1000 mushrikeen
that they had to face.
But what's more interesting than that is what?
Amongst the sahaba radiAllahu anhu, there are not
much more than about a dozen camels.
There are only 3 people who are mounted
on horseback.
The mushrikeen,
their army was
an army that had a full cavalry with
it. The sahaba radiAllahu, and whom also were
not armed. The Ansar radiAllahu ta'ala and whom
were not warrior people. They were what? Farmers.
They were simple people, they were farmers. It's
more simple than you and I.
They were simple people, they were what? They
were farmers.
And the, Muhajirun,
uh-uh, radiAllahu ta'ala, anhum, they were people who
had what? They had nothing because they came
as immigrants.
Allah Ta'ala himself bears witness that they were
kicked out from their homes and from their
wealth. They're dispossessed of their wealth. There are
people that had nothing.
So some people had swords.
Not all of them had swords.
Some people had
spears,
not all of them had spears. It's recorded
that a number of the Ansar radiAllahu ta'ala
anhu, they showed up to the field of
battle with what? With farming implements.
With farming implements.
It's that some of them showed up to
the field of battle with farming implements. It's
recorded in the sirrah that some of the
Ansar radhiallahu ta'ala anhum, they showed up to
the field of battle with what? They broke
branches off of trees and made sticks out
of them. This is what their weapons were.
They broke branches out of trees and made
sticks out of them, this is what their
weapons were. Perhaps this stick might be useful
or more useful in a battle than what
they had in their hands And it's recorded
in the
that they were from amongst the Ansar, those
who showed up with their own bare knuckles.
They had no weapon whatsoever.
Can you imagine that? A person who is
not trained in fighting,
a person who is not,
trained in martial arts, a person that doesn't
have,
any weapon facing a professional army. Okay? It's
the middle ages, but somebody in armor with
weapons mounted on horseback,
somebody who's a professional soldier, to face them
with nothing but your bare fists. Can you
imagine the gall that a person has to
have for that? How much himma a person
has to have for that? How much courage
a person has to have for that? How
much conviction a person has to have for
that? Can you imagine how much it takes
for a person to show up like that?
Brothers and sisters, when was it it was
in the month of Ramadan? These were people
who are not a joke. These were people
who are for real. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
gave them something. And what happened in the
battle of Badr?
Was it a a was it a a
failure?
Was it
a a a a a a a complete,
disappointment? Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala, gave gave them
such a victory. The victory is open until
the day of judgement. He gave them such
a promise of victory that day, that victory
didn't end on that day, that victory is
something that's open until the day of judgement.
It's for everyone in this ummah because of
the the poverty and sincerity and need for
Allah
that they showed on that day, the the
the courage they showed that they trusted in
Allah, the complete trust they showed in him
that day, that they came out to,
to to to to to prosecute the commandment
of Allah, and they came out to help
the messenger of Allah salallahu alayhi wa sallam
whoever comes out with that niyah until the
day of judgement. In any matter great or
small, Allah ta'ala will give them from that
victory and tell thee, yomul qiyama, brothers and
sisters. This is what? This is courage. This
is himma.
This is the opposite of cowardice. And we
show cowardice in so many things, large and
small. We show cowardice in waking up for
fajr. We show cowardice in coming to the
masjid. We show cowardice in opening our wallets
and giving things. We show cowardice in saying
I'm sorry to somebody, just apologizing, admitting that
what I did was wrong. Admitting that what
I did was wrong.
And telling Allah to Allah,
I was wrong, you forgive me. By telling
another person I was wrong, you forgive me.
By giving other people their rights, and only
hoping for my rights from Allah to Allah,
not holding my rights over other people. We
show so much cowardice in it. But brothers
and sisters, Allah has witnessed that this is
something from the very beginning of this ummah
until this day, the people who had resolved,
the people who had
courage, those people Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala rewarded
them with goodness. And this is the month
of courage. This is also the month of
courage. This is the month in which,
the fatham, Makkah Mukarama happened. This is the
month in which so many happened,
so many victories were given to this ummah.
It's absolutely,
undescribable.
Tarak bin
Ziyad and Musa bin Nusayr, the Arab and
Berber commanders of the, armies of Banu Umayyah
that crossed,
that crossed the,
straight of Gibraltar from Morocco into what?
Into
Spain. Into Spain. What did they do? What
did they do? Their armies crossed
with nothing, with no one behind them, with
such resolve in which such Himma and with
such courage. It said, Allahu Alem, it said
that they burned their ships behind them because
they didn't intend on going home. They intended
for what?
One of the 2,
one of the true beautiful things, either victory
or shahadah fisabilillah.
This was in which month, brothers and sisters?
This was in the month of Ramadan.
The greatest victory that day won against a
combined army of
of of the Visigothic kings that ruled over
Spain. What month was that victory in brothers
and sisters? Wallahi. It was not only in
the month of Ramadan, it was on the
day of 27th of Ramadan.
Perhaps their intelligence services weren't functioning
that year. Perhaps they didn't have a good
way of gathering information
that year because these are our people, brothers
and sisters. You're not going to win against
them anyway. But you're definitely not going to
win against them in Ramadan, and you're definitely
not going to win against them on the
27th of Ramadan.
Allah granted
them such a victory.
700
years, the Muslims were there in Spain. The
Muslims were for a great majority of that.
The the majority of population of the country.
Not just foreign Arabs that, and Berbers that
settled the land, but Spaniards. It took the
inquisition literally 2 centuries to kill, deport,
torture,
and and and suppress the Islam out of
people in order to
rechristianize
the Iberian Peninsula.
But still to this day, nobody goes to
visit the,
Visigothic Cathedrals of Spain. Nobody goes to visit
the,
the buildings that were built by the the
the Spaniards before the Muslims came, or even
after the Muslims came. What do people go
there to visit? They go there to visit
the
and the the the heritage, the beautiful heritage
of what? Of the Muslims. Even their most
beautiful quote unquote churches and cathedrals, they're all
They're all
They're still of the Quran up on the
wall because they're too beautiful. Nobody has the
heart to take them down. This is the
fath have what? Not of artisans,
not of money, not of,
of of generals, or planning,
or or politics,
or
economics. This is all the fact a person
of vision understands where did this come from.
Those weren't
built by architects. Who were they built by?
It was built by the sincerity,
and the humility, and the simplicity,
and the courage of those people who crossed
over that peninsula for the sake of Allah
with courage and with tawakkal in Allah
to the point that when that army crossed
over, what did they know that they had?
Uh-uh. Any sort of, uh-uh, you know, chance
of doing anything. All they had was trust
in Allah ta'ala. What did they know? Their
books that were written in the from the
at that time, they're sitting in our libraries
to this day. We read them. Those people
received the reward for them. Those people received
the reward for them above the reward of
the ulama and the mumha tazeem. Those people
received reward for them. Why? Because of their
sincerity.
Because of their sincerity, they received the reward
for it. What did they know? It's a
hadith narrated in the Muwatta of Imam Malik.
It's a Sahih hadith, afterward it's narrated in
the Siha Sita. It's not that it's not
narrated in the Siha Sita, it's narrated in
the Siha Sita, but the first narrator,
of a published book was Imam Malik radiAllahu
ta'ala Anhu Wa Rahinu Allah Tabaraka Wa Ta'ala.
It's a hadith of Haram. She is the
foster sister of the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam. But she is from the Ansar.
The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam goes
to visit her one day, and he
goes to sleep. She is his sister, he
goes to sleep with his head in her
lap, sallallahu
alaihi wasallam.
And he wakes up and smiles. And she
asked, You Rasool Allah, what makes you smile
so? He says he says, I saw Allah
showed me in a dream
that there was a there was,
3,
1,000 people.
I forget the number. A number of people
that went out on the ship, on ships,
in the path of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
and their ships ruled the ocean
like like a king rides on its sits
on his throne. And Allah ta'ala gave them
victory. She said, You Rasulullah make dua that
I'm one of them, and he made dua
for her. Then he fell asleep again and
he woke up again and he had a
smile on his face. And she says, What
makes you smile, You Messer, O Messenger of
Allah?
He said, I saw a dream in which
there were 10,000 people from this ummah that
went out
on the ocean, in the path of Allah
with the ships riding the ocean like a
king sits on his throne, and Allah gave
them victory. She says,
make dua that I'm from amongst them. He
says what? He says what? He says, no,
you're from amongst the first group of people.
It's recorded in history that,
Haram the the the foster sister of the
Messenger of Allah
she was with that first navy that Sayyidina
Mu'awiya radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu
commissioned at the
permission of Sayna Uthman radhiallahu Anhu during his
reign. And that navy went and beat the
Roman navy,
in a battle at sea. And they conquered
the island of Cyprus
at that time, which is from the original
Futuhat. It's from the watan of the sahaba
radiAllahu ta'ala Anhu.
And her masar is still there to this
day. You can go
pray a lot in the masjid and read
for her.
From here or from there, her is still
there to this day on the island of
Cyprus brothers and sisters. The ulama who are
the commentators of hadith, they say by consensus
that the second
group of people, the 10,000 is who? Is
the army of Tariq bin Ziyad that crossed
over on that day of Ramadan
into Spain, and they were given the victory
they were given by
Allah because of their simplicity, because of their
ikhlas, and because of their courage, brothers and
sisters.
This is something, these are big people, they
had a big ikhlas, big sincerity,
and they had big courage. We are people,
at least in small things, we shouldn't
shy away. At least in small things, we
shouldn't shy away. We shouldn't shy away, and
we should teach our children also to be
courageous. What do we teach our children? Get
good grades, get into a good university, get
a good job. We're very good at that,
and the kids will do it insha'allah, and
there's nothing wrong with that. Allah taught, give
all of them so much tawfiq amin. But
what we also need to do is teach
them courage. We also need to tell them
that it's great that you be materially successful
in this world.
But there's an achievement higher than this achievement.
There's a ambition higher than this ambition.
There is a courage higher than this courage.
