Alhamdulillah, we praise Him, ask for His help,
and ask for His forgiveness.
And we seek refuge in Allah from the
evil of our souls and from the evil
of our deeds.
Whom Allah guides, no one is misguided, and
whom He misguides, no one is guided.
And I bear witness that there is no
god but Allah, alone, with no partner.
And I bear witness that Muhammad is His
servant and Messenger.
O you who have believed, fear Allah as
He should be feared, and do not die
except as Muslims.
O you people, fear your Lord Who created
you from one soul, and He created His
wife from her, and He spread from them
many men and women.
And fear Allah in Whom you ask for
help and mercy.
Indeed, Allah is ever watching over you.
O you who have believed, fear Allah and
say the right words.
He will correct your deeds and forgive your
sins.
And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has
certainly attained a great success.
Before we get started, brothers, try to move
forward, inshallah, make some space.
Try to move forward and to your left.
The Prophet ﷺ, he says,
Uphold the night prayer.
Why?
Because it is the practice of the righteous
people before you.
And it is a means for you to
get closer to your Lord.
That's number two.
And he says, وَمَكْفَرَةٌ لِّلسَّيِّئَاتِ And it is
a means to erase your sins.
And it
is a means of protecting you from sin.
And subhanAllah, one of the earliest revelations that
came to the Prophet ﷺ was اقرأ.
But then right after,
سورة المُدَّثِّر, the command was, قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ Get
up and tell people about this religion, about
Allah subhanAllah.
And then the third, some of the ulama
says, the third earliest revelation was, قُمْ اللَّيْلَ
If you're gonna be
doing dawah and inviting people to the truth
and to Allah subhanAllah, you're gonna need more
than physical power.
Your ruh, your nafs is gonna need strengthening.
And that is done only through, or one
of the best ways to do it is
through قِيَامِ اللَّيْلَ For one of the earliest
commands Allah subhanAllah gave the Prophet ﷺ is
That uphold the night
prayer.
Half or decrease a
little bit of it.
And so in
this hadith, the Prophet ﷺ tells us that
one of the signs, one of the early
signs, or one of the signs of the
righteous people is قِيَامِ اللَّيْلَ And so if
we want to be amongst the righteous people,
we need to uphold the night prayer.
We need to uphold the night prayer.
Imam Ahmad, one time, Imam Ahmad was a
muhaddith.
And so students would come to him to
ask for hadith.
And so one time, a student of knowledge
came to him, and he stayed over at
his place.
And so Imam Ahmad, from his husn al
-dhan, he assumes that all the students of
knowledge should pray at night a little bit.
So he left him some water.
He woke up in the morning, and he
found it unused.
And so he asked himself, what kind of
student of knowledge doesn't have a portion of
the night?
SubhanAllah.
He considered that a a'ib, a naqs
in a person.
And we can ask the same question.
You know, what kind of person who is
in need of a job does not get
up before fajr and prays to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala?
What kind of person, he wants success for
their child, but doesn't get up in the
middle of the night to ask Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala?
What kind of person has an illness, and
he wants Allah to cure them, and he
doesn't get up?
What kind of person wants Allah to help
our brothers and sisters in Sudan and in
Palestine and in other places, really wants and
he doesn't get up, you know, in the
middle of the night, and make dua for
them?
And one of the reasons why I wanted
to bring this up in this time is
because this is the best time for us
to practice qiyam al-layl.
You'd be amazed to know that you would
be included from those who did tahajjud, who
prayed in the best part of the night
if you just got up at 6.30.
Because fajr is so late now.
If you just...
And most of us are up that time,
subhanAllah.
But we don't realize we're up in one
of the most blessed times.
This is a time where Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala comes down, and He says, ana
al-malik, I'm the king.
Who's gonna ask for forgiveness?
Who's gonna make dua, and I'll respond to
them, subhanAllah.
One of the signs of the righteous people
is qiyam al-layl.
And then He says,
and actually Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, when
He mentions عِبَادُ الرَّحْمَانِ in surah al-furqan,
the close servants of Ar-Rahman, of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala, of the most merciful.
One of the attributes He says,
One of their characteristics, these
close servants of Allah, is they have a
portion of the night.
Prostrating and doing sujood to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
Doing ruku and sujood to Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
And so it's one of the signs of
the righteous people.
So if we want to be amongst the
righteous people, we need to have a portion
of that night.
Number two, He says,
Qiyam al-layl, it's a means for
you to get closer to your Lord.
Yes, we have our five daily prayers, and
that's something obligatory on us.
Qiyam al-layl is not obligatory.
But if someone was to ask, how do
I get closer to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala?
How do I get closer to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala?
You'll find the secret in qiyam al-layl.
And subhanallah, if you think about it, in
any relationship that you have, right?
If you are someone, a father, or a
brother, or whoever it is, maybe you're a
manager, right?
You see your employees everyday, right?
You see them everyday in the normal time.
Maybe they have to be there.
But sometimes you have invitations, and only some
people come, right?
Who do you think is gonna be closer?
Who do you think you're gonna be more
willing to do favors for?
To respond to?
It is those that come to your special
invitation.
For Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is inviting
us every night.
Allah comes down to the lowest part of
the heavens in a way that befits Him
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And He's calling people.
He's calling us, and most of us are
sleeping, subhanallah.
And He's saying, who wants, who wants, and
most of us are sleeping, subhanallah.
It's a means
of getting close to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala.
One of the people asked one of the
scholars, and they said to him, how come
that the people who pray in the night,
their faces are different, they're very bright?
How come?
They're not dark faces, they're very bright.
When you see them, you feel like, you
know, these people are special.
So he said to him, he says,
Because they secluded themselves with Ar
-Rahman, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, at the
night, while everybody's sleeping, they secluded themselves with
Ar-Rahman.
And so Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
So Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gave
them from His own Nur.
Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is Al
-Nur.
And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the
one who gives Nur and light and guidance.
Then He has no light.
So that's number two.
Number three, from the benefits of Qiyam al
-Layl, He says, sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
And how many Siyyat do we have?
And so Qiyam al-Layl is one of
the best means to get rid of your
sins.
And we have so many sins, subhanAllah.
And so Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, He
says, that He comes down in every single
Every night, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
in the lowest part of the heavens, in
a way that befits Him.
And He says, أنا الملك, I'm the king.
Who is there asking for forgiveness?
And I'll forgive them.
Who is there calling me for something?
And I'll give it to them.
And Allah stays like that until the time
of Fajr.
And this is every night.
This is an invitation from Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala, but unfortunately many of us are
sleeping.
And wallahi, many of us, we don't have
an excuse in this time.
Right?
The night is long.
The night is long.
يعني عشاء is prayed, the jamaat at 7
.30. Any salah after your ishaa will be
considered qiyam al-layl.
Even if you just prayed that one witr.
If you just prayed one witr, that's considered
qiyam al-layl.
And so you shouldn't waste that.
And then He says,
And it's a means of protecting you from
sinning.
A person might say, Shaykh, I'm addicted to
this sin.
Shaykh, I have trouble lowering my gaze.
Shaykh, I'm having trouble to stop gambling.
Or whatever it is.
The secret, you'll find it in qiyam al
-layl.
Because qiyam al-layl will stop you from
that ithim, from that sin.
Because Allah told us in the Qur'an,
They said
to the Prophet ﷺ, there is a man
who prays in the day and sins in
the night.
So he told them ﷺ, أو كما قال
ﷺ, that which prevented him in the day,
will prevent him in the night.
And if a person properly prays, that will
prevent him from committing sins.
And so look at the amazing benefits of
qiyam al-layl.
Number one, you'll be from amongst the righteous.
Number two, it will bring you closer to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And of course, what's understood from that, the
closer you are to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, the faster your du'a is answered,
the more protection you have.
Number three, it erases your sins.
And number four, it's protecting you from the
future.
It's taking care of your past, your past
sins.
And it's protecting you from sinning in the
future.
Of course, everybody is gonna sin.
But it's gonna help you decrease and become
a better person, and decrease your sin.
Ask
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for forgiveness, and
try to move forward and make some space.
Bismillah, alhamdulillah,
Now, someone might ask,
what is the special reward for the people
of Qiyam al-Layl?
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us
from the people of Qiyam al-Layl.
And Nabi ﷺ, the first khutbah he gave
in Al-Madinah when he became the ruler
of that state, of the city, he says,
O people, spread salam.
And feed the poor.
And connect with your family members.
And pray in
the night while most people will be asleep.
If you do those things,
you will enter Jannah with ease.
Subhanallah.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in Surah Al
-Sajdah, He talks about a special group of
people that in the middle of the night,
even though their body is tired and they
want to be in bed, but they push
themselves away from bed.
They push themselves away from their sheets and
from their beds.
Calling Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala out of
hope and fear.
And they spend
from that which we have given them.
Look what Allah says,
No soul, no
individual has the slightest idea of what great
reward Allah has planned for them.
Ibn Al-Qayyim, he says, because Qiyam
Al-Layl, what makes it unique, is that
it's a very private act when you do
it by yourself.
It's not a Salah that everybody has to
show up to.
The niyat are different.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala keep our
intentions sincere.
But the intentions are different.
Only a person who wants
to spend time with Allah will get up
in the middle of the night.
There's no one to show off to.
There's no other reason.
It's not going to increase your...
So Ibn Al-Qayyim, he says, just like
how they were private, in that act, Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala has made their reward
private, VIP.
Nobody knows about it.
Allah gives us an indication
of the great reward that they will get.
And we find this indication in a hadith
where the Prophet ﷺ says,
There's three people that
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala loves, and Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala smiles at, and Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala is happy with them.
Three things.
And one of those three people, he says,
And
there's a person, one of these three, he
has a beautiful spouse, and he has a
nice comfortable bed.
But he gets up in the middle of
the night, and he leaves that.
He leaves his desires, just so
he can meet Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
This person, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala smiles
at them, Allah loves them, and Allah is
happy with them.
You might say, what's the big deal?
Allah smiles at a abd?
In another hadith, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa
If Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala smiles at a person, in
the dunya, then he will enter jannah without
hisab.
Subhanallah.
He will be from those who are VIP,
they will enter, there's no hisab for them.
We know that there's a small group of
people, that will enter without hisab.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala make us
from those people.
From them are those who pray in the
night.
Subhanallah.
This is such an amazing time for us
to train ourselves, to pray in the night.
It's not hard for us to, 6.30,
pray two rak'ahs, three rak'ahs, and
make dua to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Get yourself used to it.
If that's too difficult, then just pray before
you sleep.
And start with that, do it for a
week.
Right?
And so, one of the ways, and I'll
finish with this, one of the ways that
we can become from the people of qiyam
al-layl, number one, and this is the
most important, and please pay attention, is our
niyyah.
Someone might say, I work too much, I
don't have time, I'm tired.
But nobody has an excuse to not make
a niyyah to do qiyam al-layl.
Nobody has an excuse.
For everybody, it has the ability right now
to make a niyyah, Oh Allah, tonight I
want to pray some qiyam.
Even if it's one rak'ah.
It will be considered qiyam al-layl.
For nobody should leave the jum'ah today
without that intention.
And look, look, and Nabi ﷺ says, if
a person goes to bed with the niyyah
of qiyam al-layl, but sleep overtakes him,
sleep overtakes him, then it will be written
for him as if he prayed.
Whatever portion you intended.
And that sleep was a gift from Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala.
Just like in Ramadan, if you eat by
mistake, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the
one who fed him.
But you're still fasting, subhanAllah.
But nobody has an excuse for that one.
So number one is a niyyah.
Number two is we need to make sure
that we decrease our sins.
Right?
Some of the ulama, they said, you know,
I was deprived of qiyam al-layl because
of a sin I made.
For weeks I was deprived of qiyam al
-layl.
What do you mean deprived?
You sleep early, you put your alarm, you
sleep with wudu, but you still can't get
up, subhanAllah.
Because it's not in your hand.
It's in the hands of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
It's not just about the physical aspect of
it.
You can sleep 10 hours, but if Allah
doesn't want you to get up to meet
Him, you're not gonna get up to meet
Him.
But this is something from Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
And so when a person is insistent on
sins and not doing tawbah, then that's gonna
decrease his ability to get up.
It's gonna weaken his body.
And of course all the other things, you
sleep early, right?
You go sleep with wudu.
And inshaAllah when you practice that, and if
you can't get up early before fajr, I
mean fajr is really early now.
It's really late.
It's not that hard to get up at
6.30. But if that's difficult for you,
then just pray before you sleep.
Pray that one witr for a week.
Try it for a week.
And then inshaAllah you'll be written, you'll be
from those who pray.
Qiyam al-layl, ask Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala to make us of those who listen
to the speech and follow the best of
it.
