Assalamualaikum, my name is Asiya.
I am a medical student as well as
a part-time daai.
I want to become a full-time daai,
but my parents want me to become a
doctor.
Please can you suggest what should I do
in this situation?
Should I obey my parents and become a
doctor or extend my daawa activities to become
a full-time daai?
As far as pursuing medicine is concerned, and
you said that you are a medical student,
but you do not mention what year of
your medicine you are in, or what year
you are in as far as your medical
college is concerned.
Are you in the first year, second year,
third year?
Have you completed more than half of your
medical college, your studies in your medical college?
You have not specified.
But what I would suggest is that if
you have completed more than half of your
medical studies, then I would suggest and request
you to complete your medical studies.
And after this, you can become a full
-time daai.
Whereas while you are studying medicine, you can
be a part-time daai.
Now, as far as becoming a full-time
daai is concerned, and as far as daawa
is concerned, there are several words in the
glorious Quran which stress upon daawa.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the
glorious Quran, Surah An-Nahl, chapter 16, verse
number 125, ادعوا إلى سبيل ربك بالحكمة والموعظة
الحسنة وجادلهم بالتي هي أحسن Invite to the
way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful
preachings, and argue with them, and reason with
them in the ways that are best and
most gracious.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the
glorious Quran, Surah Al-Fusilat, chapter 41, verse
Who
is better in speech than the one who
calls others towards Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
works righteousness and says that I am a
Muslim.
The best profession is the profession of a
da'i.
But natural, if you compare the profession of
a doctor as compared to the profession of
a da'i, the profession of a da
'i is far superior as compared to the
profession of a doctor.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the
glorious Quran, Surah Ali Imran, chapter number 3,
Let there arise out of
you a band of people calling towards what
is good, enjoining what is right and forbidding
what is wrong.
They are the ones to attain felicity.
Today in our community we have full-time
doctors, full-time lawyers, full-time engineers.
How many full-time da'is do we
have?
And those who are full-time da'is,
they are the ones to attain felicity.
These are the believers who will achieve higher
ranks in Shanna.
It is the duty of every Muslim to
at least be a part-time da'i.
And it is farz-e-kifaya for certain
people to be constantly involved in spreading the
message of Islam.
It is farz-e-kifaya for certain people
to be full-time da'is.
So, since your parents want you to become
a doctor and you want to become a
full-time da'i, if you are in
the latter part of your medical studies or
your medical college and you have possibly about
six months, one year remaining, so since you
have spent so much time studying medicine, so
what I would suggest and request you is
to complete your medical studies and to complete
your medical college and then you can completely
focus on da'wah because you have already
spent so much time.
But if you have just started doing medicine,
then the situation is different.
If you have just started doing medicine, how
much are you willing to sacrifice for the
sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?
Are you willing to sacrifice and leave your
medical college and dedicate your life for the
sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala?
And since you have this determination to become
a full-time da'i, it is very
good.
So, what I would request you is to
sit with your parents and discuss with them.
Explain to them the importance of da'wah,
of conveying the message of Islam to the
non-Muslims, to those who are unaware of
it.
Mention to them all these verses of the
glorious Quran and explain to them the importance
of da'wah and Inshallah, they will be
convinced that being a da'i is far
superior as compared to becoming a doctor.
Becoming a doctor, it is a good profession.
You are treating human beings, but the doctor
of a soul is far superior as compared
to the doctor of a body.
So, we should see to it that we
convey the message of Islam to the non
-Muslims, to those who are unaware of it.
In fact, you should tell your parents and
you should explain to them the hadith of
our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him
wherein he said that when a person dies,
all of his deeds are cut off except
for three.
And one of these three things is a
pious child who prays for their parents.
So, if the right tarbiyah and upbringing is
given to children, then they will do da
'wah for their parents.
So, the parents, they should encourage their children
to become da'is and you should tell
your parents that if you become a da
'i, then you can do da'wah for
your parents even after they pass away.
And Inshallah, there are more chances that your
da'wah will be accepted.
So, if a person is a righteous and
religious person, if he is a da'i
and if he does da'wah to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala, there are more chances
of his da'wah being accepted than an
average human being.
If a da'i does da'wah to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, if a righteous
and religious person who has dedicated his life
does da'wah to Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala, there are more chances of his da
'wah being accepted than an average Muslim or
even doctor who is not a person who
has dedicated his life for the sake of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
So, if your parents want to be benefited
through your da'wah, they should also wish
the same.
They should wish that you become a da
'i.
You convey the message of Islam to the
non-Muslims.
This is very important.
And slowly and gradually, if you talk to
your parents, if you explain to them, Inshallah
bi-idhnillah, they will accept what you are
saying and Inshallah, you can continue and become
a full-time da'i.
But if your parents are yet persistent and
they want you to become a doctor, then
you should look at what is more important
in this situation.
Explain to them and then you can become
a full-time da'i because da'wah
is very important.
Explain to them in a nice way, in
a gentle way, and then you can pursue
being a full-time da'i because this
is very important and it is related to
da'wah and it is related to your
akhirah.
So if you want higher ranks in Jannah,
you should see to it that you convey
the message of Islam and you dedicate your
life for the sake of Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala.
We pray to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
that may He make us from among the
torchbearers of the world, those who carry forward
the message of Islam and those who dedicate
the message of Islam throughout the world.
Today, we have so many doctors, so many
engineers, so many full-time doctors and engineers,
but we have very few full-time da
'is.
So let us dedicate our lives for the
sake of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
