Someone mentioned that how does one avoid self
praise?
That if I'm successful
in my work, in my career, you know,
things are going well, how do I avoid
being
conceited, having self praise,
and just self concerned?
And one of the great imams of Islam,
has a beautiful brief aphorism about this. And
this is aphorism number 242
of his hikam. He says,
That the believer is busied
by praising Allah
from
being too appreciative
of their own good.
Right? And Shukr
is appreciation.
Right? So the believer, meaning the true believer,
is busied
by the praise of Allah
from being too
engrossed in seeing the good that they do
and appreciate I did this and that. Why?
The prophet
said,
Whoever finds good, let them praise Allah. Ascribe
it to Allah
and keep ascribing it to Allah till you
don't see its description to yourself.
Right? And this is one of the things
that Ulema mentioned that anytime
you
feel
that I did it,
go to the corner, like go make wudu,
pray 2 rakas,
thank Allah for it, and remain thanking Allah
until
gratitude
to Allah
drowns out
self praise.
Because,
You have no blessing whatsoever except that it
is from Allah.
Allah. Allah has created you and all that
you do.
So this is a key to avoid conceit
and self praise and being deluded by your
own success.
Right? That the true believer is busied by
praise of Allah
from
being too appreciative
of their own self.
And they're busied, he continues. And he's busied,
and the true believer is busied
by the rights of Allah from
having
too much concern
for their own
selfish interests.
I need this and I need this. I
have to do this. I have to do
that.
The believer
And we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to
grant us that
that explicit faith
that enables us to put
him
before our own selves.
