Weekly, we're looking at
Mahmoud Muhasibi's treatise for seekers of guidance,
which is one of the great early works
of spiritual guidance, of looking at at
presenting
the spiritual teachings of the Quran and our
beloved messenger, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
Imam Al Muhasibi
says,
Choose
being true
in every
circumstance
and you will profit.
And literally Eathir is prefer
right? Because our choices
reflect what we actually prefer.
Right? Because when we have several courses of
actions, what we end up choosing
is what we prefer.
And our choices are the best indicators
of what we love.
And you can claim love, but the true
love is manifest in the choices you make.
So
I prefer,
make the choice
of being true
in every
circumstance, wherever you are, whatever you're in.
Choose being true
and you will profit.
What is what does it mean to be
true?
Right.
Be true to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
Right. Be true
to yourself
that if you say
you are
of those who submit,
then what does that truly entail?
You say that you care
then be true to that.
That's why they define being true is for
your outward
to to conform to your inward
and your inward
to conform to your outward.
Right? Because a lot of pea a lot
of us delude ourselves.
Right? That we we have
illusions
of how we would want to be, but
that's not how we are.
To be true
is to aspire
inwardly
to what truly matters,
to the most true, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala,
to the next life,
to aspire
to righteousness
in this life.
But then to translate that aspiration
into
our choices,
our actions, our responses. And if you do
that, he says, you will profit.
Right? Our life is just
a series of choices.
So he says, choose being true in every
situation
and you will profit.
And one of the things
of that is
to ask oneself in the difficult
choices and the difficult tests.
That what does Allah truly seek from me?
What truly reflects
the way of our Prophet
And he says, And
completely
leave
the useless
and you'll be safe.
The
is right?
Is the the excess? Is that in which
there's no clear benefit?
Leave it.
Right? In anything,
there's a certain amount,
right, that you need
or you want. There's some benefit or good
whether religious or worldly.
The scholars say,
harm is in the excess.
You go out with friends, that's good.
But the harm comes is when you go
above and beyond
the need, the benefit,
what's wholesome, you have
people over.
It's wonderful.
But then
there's a certain point beyond which
there is no more benefit
and that that's when harm creeps in.
Excessiveness in one speech,
excessiveness
in one's spending,
excessiveness
in one's worldly interests.
Completely leave excess
in everything
and you will be safe.
This is you wanna do financial planning,
this works too.
Limit yourself to where where there's clear need,
there's clear benefit,
leave the other things aside.
And then he explains why and we'll close
with that. He says,
because he
he refers to part of a hadith of
our beloved messenger
He says,
for being true leads
to righteousness,
to Bir.
And
righteousness,
Bir, virtue,
leads to the good pleasure of Allah Most
High.
And lying.
And and there's lying to others,
but also lying to yourself that you imagine
that you're a certain way when you're not,
leads
to corruption
and corruption.
And corruption
bequeaths
the wrath of Allah Most High.
And in this vein, Abdullah ibn Abbas
said, don't speak about that which is of
no
interest to you.
And leave much
of that which does concern you because there's
no benefit in it.
Right? It's like someone tried to open the
subject of
Pakistani politics to my father, and I don't
think he was in a great mood anyways,
which didn't help. He said, only people who
live in Pakistan and understand Pakistan should talk
about
it. That shut my brother and I up
totally because neither of us live there, and
neither of us understand what's going on.
And leave much of what does interest you.
Because what benefit is there
in busying yourself with it? Are you gonna
do something about it that will benefit you
or others in this life or the next?
If not, leave it.
And then he says,
and don't argue with a fool
because it's a waste of time
nor
with a person of forbearance
because you won't beat them anyways.
And
mention your brother, mention others
with what you would want them to mention
you with.
That if you have to mention people, mention
them in a good way.
Right? The prophet
said,
whoever believes in Allah in the last day,
let them say the good or remain silent.
And one of the most important aspects of
saying the good and remaining silent
is
avoid talking about people.
Unless
there's a clear need or a clear benefit.
And if you're gonna say it, say it
in a way that is,
you
know, manner that you'd want to be mentioned.
So that is the
advice today
of Imam al Muhasabi. We ask Allah
that he make us of those who choose
the truth
and who are true, who leave
who leave excess,
who leave
useless
speech, who strive towards
this
glorious quality that is bitter, that is virtue
and righteousness,
who keep away from lying
to others or to ourselves.
Of those who only speak
and busy ourselves with what is of
concern to us, that which is of benefit
to us or others
in this life or the next.
And who leave aside other things. And we're
even careful about what is of interest to
us. Is that this is is this the
thing that is of most interest to me
in my
life and in my religion?
And don't argue with people whether foolish or
wise,
and mention others only
with what you would want them to mention
you by.
