with Sheikh Jarrah Zrabeni.
So after,
starting in the name of Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala and
praising Allah Subhanahu Ta'ala and sending peace and
salutations upon the prophet, Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
We continue looking at the work of Imam
Abu Abdul Rahman, a Solemi. May Allah have
mercy on him.
The blame worthy traits of the self and
their treatment.
And he says in the 46th,
article or the 46th blame worthy trait,
is that of its blame worthy traits, I
e the self, is to
waste its time
and to be by being,
engaged in that which
it's it does not concern it or with
that, that does not concern it of the
affairs of this world
and,
to lose itself in it,
with its people, I. E. With the people
of worldliness, which is engaging in everything,
that doesn't,
isn't connected to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. And
its
cure is for one to know that their
times
are very precious
and the the most precious thing or of
the most precious things that they own. So
that they should use it in the most
precious of things like,
remembering Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
and to be continuous
in his worship
and, to the end of of the article.
So
talking about wasting time,
is something that is incumbent upon us
because there's no one that,
has time or or there's no one that
is free,
of that, or there are very few people
that are, free of that. And so when
we talk about wasting time, we talk about
engaging our times
with doing that which is,
beneficial.
And all of our times do are not
free of doing something, of acting on something.
So whether it be that one goes to
work or whether it be that one is
engaged in worship,
And then even after one is engaged in
a long and and and tiring day of
work, they come back and they are engaged
in some sort of actions. And so
if someone is engaged in beneficial actions,
then that is good and that is what
is needed. However, one does not leave themselves
be engaged
in that which is of no benefit or
to just sit there,
without doing,
much
or,
more more,
dangerous is to engage in that which is
going to be harmful,
for oneself.
So this is the blame worthy wasting of
time is that one engages in that which
is not of benefit.
So here, Imam Abu Abdul Rahman al Salam,
he gives starts off by giving an example
and says that one waste their time by,
and this is the example, by,
putting their time in or or engaging their
time in that which is,
not of concern with the for them of
the worldly things and to, lose themselves in
it with the the people of of worldliness.
And, so for example, an example of that
that we see, for example, is that,
people talk about, politics or engage in in
the talk about politics,
more so than they need and more so
than than is beneficial.
So if someone,
puts some time in maybe on a daily
basis, just a very limited time that they,
that they specify for themselves in order to
read the news and find out what's happening
around them, then this is something fine or
something that may be good. However,
engaging beyond that in in talking about politics
constantly,
and not saying anything that benefits people, not
for example, bearing good news,
about what's what's what's happening
or not saying something that is is is
beneficial
regarding the politics, then that would be a
waste of time, and that would be trespassing,
the the beneficial amount that one needs. And
so
we find people, and and this is a
sad state, is that they engage most of
their time in just talking about politics without
any benefit. And they,
and they critique more so than that. They
they critique the politics without any,
benefit at all that they would incur for
themselves or for those that they are, talking,
to,
about that. So we see that widespread, and
so we should,
restrain ourselves from such things and specify times
to,
deal with with with with the news and
to view the news.
And so here when we talk about this
or these specific societies that waste their time,
like we said, in in, for example, engaging
their their news and and then their whole
lives go like that or their their times
go like that,
what what we advise them with or or
what we say is that,
with that extra if you have some extra
time, then why not occupy it in reading
a book or doing something beneficial? Or, for
example, learning some sort of
production or some sort of of craft that
one is able to use because then that
that will you would be able to create
something that is beneficial.
More so, one may be able may be
able even to sell those things and then
make some extra money,
because of that. And then that would be
beneficial for themselves and for the community and
for for their families and so on and
so forth. And they can teach that to
their kids.
However,
we we we see that in some of
our societies,
and and and this is something that is
is sad is that,
the people that that that are lazy and
sit there unemployed and say that they are
in need and they are,
they are poor and they just wait for
some money to come in from either families
or from some some sort of aid,
they may be able to
learn some sort of craft.
And in historically, in in Muslim societies,
people weren't just sitting around like that. This
this is not something that was usual for
Muslim societies.
People knew some sort of craft or knew
some sort of,
had some sort of employment. They were either
farmers or even artisans and and creating,
creating
light products that they were able to sell
to people and make money,
off of. And they would be beneficial to
people. And so
people can can still do that. They can
still learn some sort of craft or some
sort of light production
and be able to benefit themselves and be
able to benefit others. And Allah
has honored us as Muslims. And as Muslims,
we we don't
sit around,
in laziness, and we hold we have some
sort of dignity, and we have dignity, and
we hold our heads high.
And we, and so we shouldn't be waiting
for for funds or
asking people. We should be able to engage
our times in that which would be beneficial.
And of that is that one would,
learn a craft in in order to be
able to,
sustain themselves and sustain,
their families. And so,
in in in in our societies, we should
put our times and our efforts towards those
things and not sit around lazily and waste
our times.
So then Imam Abu Abdurrahman and Soleim he
says that,
that one knows that their time is of
the most precious things that they have. And
so one should engage it in the most
precious of matters like the remembrance of Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala. And so here, this is,
likewise, what Imam Ghazali says is that
the the,
breath of a human being is like a
precious gem.
And that, one should use it in in
that which is good and that which is
precious. And so what that means is that,
one when one,
inhales and exhales or or they breathe, that
is some time
that that is used of their life.
And so their life is made up of
those small units of breaths. And so one
should guard and watch for their breaths or
their times to be,
to be put in something that is beneficial
and not waste it. And so,
we we we don't we're not saying by
that, like, when one so when one engages
in in remembrance and one engages in worship
of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala, and then
also the person the person isn't going to
engage all of their time in that. They
have some leeway after that to go and
do that which is enjoyable like seeing family,
seeing friends, and so on and so forth.
However,
and and so we're not telling people that
that
neglect those things.
This is needed, and and one should should
be able to go and see, friends and
family and and have some sort of downtime.
However, what what we're saying is that one
should make the their time,
all beneficial.
Right? And and then after that, those things
come and and are needed. And then he
continues on and says that one,
engages in continuously
in in worship. And so one
engages their time in remembrance of Allah and
in worship. And then after that, they can
have some sort of of downtime, but all
of those things should be done in a
balanced way.
And,
then Imam Abu Abdulrahmanasulam,
he says that, and then one,
holds himself accountable to having sincerity with oneself
for the it has been narrated from the
Prophet
that he said,
leave that which is doubtful to you to
that which is not doubtful.
And the prophet
also says
that from the excellence of the Islam of
a person is to leave that which does
not concern them.
And that and whoever leaves that which does
not concern them, then they will be busied
with that which concerns them.
And Al Hussein ibn Mansoor, one of the
early predecessors and the righteous said,
that
be,
be conscious
or engage in overlooking,
yourself
because if you do not,
busy it,
I e yourself,
then it will busy you meaning if you
don't if you do not busy it in
the good it will busy you in that
which is evil.
And so here looking at,
the hadith of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
where where he says to leave doubtful matters
we see in some between some muslims today
and maybe
spread a little bit in our societies that
they sit and they engage
in
religious talk and they talk about religion and
religious matters
And sadly when they do that is that
when they in in some circles they sit
and they bring forth some of the
narrations or the hadith of the Prophet
which are have subtle meanings or
are very precise in wording and may be
misunderstood.
And they sit there and they talk about
it and then they they say this cannot
be and they try from that to
or using that to
scrap or do away with the sunnah of
the prophet
or do away with the hadith of the
prophet
And likewise,
they bring forth some of the opinions of
the scholars, again, that are very subtle and
very precise.
And
they they make fun of it and make
that their joke and and sit there and
laugh about it. And all of that is
something that is very bad and people should
not be engaging in. And so when we
look at the hadith of the Prophet
we should have
an exaltation for the prophet and for his
sunnah.
And
making it a point of
of, discussion without knowledge and making it a
point of mockery
is one of the grave and major sins,
and so one should not engage in that.
And likewise, when we talk about the these
scholars of this of this religion
and and bring forth their opinions, we should
not mock them. We should not it should
not be a subject of laughter and should
not be a subject of our joking in
our circles and and and in our discussions,
and we should engage our discussions in that
which we we don't have doubts about and
does not spew about,
doubts and should not and we should not
engage in that which puts our religion
into a state of mockery. This is not
becoming of someone who is Muslim and someone
who has,
beared witness that, of the oneness of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
So here and then he closes off by
saying that, be watchful over yourself. And if
you do not busy it, then it will
busy you. And this is, like some of
the other quotes that has come from the
early predecessors as well that yourself, if you
do not engage it in that which is
good, it will engage you in that which
is evil. And, so we we should take
heed of of this advice, and we ask
Allah,
to,
assist us in engaging our time in that
which is good and to,
guarding ourselves
and engaging it in that which is,
beneficial and the Allah
keep us away from engaging in that which
is bad and and taking ourselves into that
which is evil.
