Ammar Alshukry – Five Lessons From the People of the Cave

Ammar Alshukry
AI: Summary ©
The speakers discuss the importance of Islam, including its success in the United States and potential reform. They share lessons from Ashab Al-Kahf and share stories about young people's success in social media. The plan is to make a basket of Fir Aceon send directly to the house of Fir Aceon, which would cause the basket of Fir Aceon to fall into the hands of Fir Aceon, and allow the person to believe in the promises of Allah Subhanahu wa'ala and protect their own lives. The plan also allows for the person to believe in the promises of Allah Subhanahu wa'ala and for them to be protected from evil influence.

yuslih lakum a'malakum wa yaqfeer lakum dhunubakum wa

00:00:54 --> 00:00:57

min yuta'illaha wa rasoolahu faqad faaza fawzan

00:00:57 --> 00:01:00

azeema amma ba'd All praise is due to

00:01:00 --> 00:01:00

Allah.

00:01:00 --> 00:01:03

We seek His guidance and His forgiveness and

00:01:03 --> 00:01:05

we seek refuge in Allah from the evil

00:01:05 --> 00:01:07

of ourselves and the whispering of our desires.

00:01:07 --> 00:01:09

Whom Allah guides, no one can misguide.

00:01:09 --> 00:01:11

And whom He allows to be misled, no

00:01:11 --> 00:01:12

one can guide.

00:01:12 --> 00:01:13

And I bear witness that there is nothing

00:01:13 --> 00:01:15

worthy of worship except Allah alone having no

00:01:15 --> 00:01:19

partners and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave

00:01:19 --> 00:01:21

and His messenger and His perfect worshipper.

00:01:21 --> 00:01:26

To proceed, we are encouraged by the Prophet

00:01:26 --> 00:01:29

ﷺ every Friday to read Surah Al-Kahf.

00:01:30 --> 00:01:33

And Surah Al-Kahf is a chapter that

00:01:33 --> 00:01:35

details four stories.

00:01:36 --> 00:01:39

It is a chapter that deals with the

00:01:39 --> 00:01:41

concept of fitna, trials.

00:01:41 --> 00:01:43

And the four stories that we read in

00:01:43 --> 00:01:46

Surah Al-Kahf reflect this notion of trials.

00:01:47 --> 00:01:50

A person will be tried in their deen,

00:01:51 --> 00:01:52

like Ashab Al-Kahf.

00:01:52 --> 00:01:54

Or a person will be tried in their

00:01:54 --> 00:01:57

money, like Sahib Al-Jannatain, the owner of

00:01:57 --> 00:01:58

the two gardens.

00:01:58 --> 00:02:01

Or a person will be tried with regards

00:02:01 --> 00:02:04

to knowledge even, like Musa and Al-Khidr.

00:02:04 --> 00:02:07

Or a person will be tried regarding power,

00:02:07 --> 00:02:08

like Dhul-Qarnain.

00:02:08 --> 00:02:10

And so in this brief khutbah, I wanted

00:02:10 --> 00:02:14

to share just a few lessons from Ashab

00:02:14 --> 00:02:14

Al-Kahf.

00:02:14 --> 00:02:18

This story that Allah ﷻ tells us that

00:02:18 --> 00:02:23

Rasulullah ﷺ was asked about, about a group

00:02:23 --> 00:02:25

of people who came into a cave.

00:02:25 --> 00:02:27

Their story was amazing.

00:02:27 --> 00:02:30

And I don't have the time to go

00:02:30 --> 00:02:32

over many gems, but I'll just share inshaAllah

00:02:32 --> 00:02:34

3 or 4 if time permits 5.

00:02:35 --> 00:02:37

But the first thing Allah ﷻ tells us

00:02:37 --> 00:02:39

that these people were persecuted and they came

00:02:39 --> 00:02:40

to a cave.

00:02:40 --> 00:02:43

And Allah mentions twice that they are a

00:02:43 --> 00:02:44

fi'ah.

00:02:44 --> 00:02:46

That they are, sorry, fityah.

00:02:47 --> 00:02:48

Not a fi'ah, but fityah.

00:02:48 --> 00:02:53

Allah says

00:02:53 --> 00:02:54

that they are young.

00:02:55 --> 00:02:57

And the fact that they are young is

00:02:57 --> 00:03:01

praise for them because young people normally are

00:03:01 --> 00:03:06

more distracted with entertainment and the frivolity of

00:03:06 --> 00:03:09

youth than big picture questions.

00:03:11 --> 00:03:12

Why are we here?

00:03:12 --> 00:03:15

And why are our people worshipping idols?

00:03:16 --> 00:03:19

Generally, young people are deluded by entertainment.

00:03:20 --> 00:03:21

And so if you were to ask young

00:03:21 --> 00:03:24

people about the newest singers they would know,

00:03:24 --> 00:03:26

the newest athletes they would know, the newest

00:03:26 --> 00:03:29

movies they would know, the newest series they

00:03:29 --> 00:03:29

would know.

00:03:30 --> 00:03:33

And so when Allah ﷻ is repeatedly calling

00:03:33 --> 00:03:35

them young, that is praise for these young

00:03:35 --> 00:03:39

people that they separated from the frivolity of

00:03:39 --> 00:03:39

their society.

00:03:40 --> 00:03:43

They believed in Allah

00:03:43 --> 00:03:45

and we increased them in guidance.

00:03:45 --> 00:03:47

But there is also praise for the companions

00:03:47 --> 00:03:50

of Rasulullah ﷺ when this surah was revealed

00:03:50 --> 00:03:53

in Mecca because the people who were around

00:03:53 --> 00:03:55

Rasulullah ﷺ were also young.

00:03:55 --> 00:03:58

And young people changed the world in every

00:03:58 --> 00:03:59

time and place.

00:03:59 --> 00:04:01

And we see even here in the United

00:04:01 --> 00:04:03

States in the past couple of months, after

00:04:03 --> 00:04:05

everything that has been happening with the war

00:04:05 --> 00:04:07

on the people of Gaza, you saw that

00:04:07 --> 00:04:10

the greatest national conversations were sparked not by

00:04:10 --> 00:04:12

people in corporate offices and not by politicians,

00:04:13 --> 00:04:15

but by the young people, the students in

00:04:15 --> 00:04:18

universities who were having encampments all over the

00:04:18 --> 00:04:20

country and all over the world that were

00:04:20 --> 00:04:23

causing the discussion to be happening about divestments

00:04:23 --> 00:04:25

from the Zionist state.

00:04:26 --> 00:04:31

Allah says

00:04:31 --> 00:04:33

they were a young people who believed in

00:04:33 --> 00:04:33

Allah.

00:04:34 --> 00:04:36

So the first is the power that comes

00:04:36 --> 00:04:37

with youth.

00:04:37 --> 00:04:40

The second lesson is Allah Subh'anaHu Wa

00:04:40 --> 00:04:43

00:04:43 --> 00:04:46

Allah says we strengthened their hearts.

00:04:47 --> 00:04:49

We strengthened their heart when they stood up

00:04:49 --> 00:04:50

against their people.

00:04:50 --> 00:04:52

And they stood up, the Mufassireen said a

00:04:52 --> 00:04:53

number of times.

00:04:53 --> 00:04:54

Number one, they stood up in front of

00:04:54 --> 00:04:56

the king and they addressed the king for

00:04:56 --> 00:04:56

his idol worship.

00:04:57 --> 00:04:58

And then they stood up to their own

00:04:58 --> 00:04:59

families.

00:04:59 --> 00:05:00

And then they stood up in the marketplace.

00:05:01 --> 00:05:02

And then they stood up when they met

00:05:02 --> 00:05:04

each other in front of the cave and

00:05:04 --> 00:05:07

Our Lord,

00:05:08 --> 00:05:09

the Lord of the heavens and the earth,

00:05:09 --> 00:05:11

we won't call upon other than Him.

00:05:11 --> 00:05:13

And so this idea that Allah Subh'anaHu

00:05:13 --> 00:05:15

Wa Ta-A'la gives steadfastness and Allah

00:05:15 --> 00:05:16

Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la gives strength

00:05:16 --> 00:05:19

to people's hearts in their greatest moments of

00:05:19 --> 00:05:20

difficulty and crisis.

00:05:21 --> 00:05:23

And we see this word,

00:05:23 --> 00:05:25

We see this phrase appear in a number

00:05:25 --> 00:05:27

of other places in the Qur'an.

00:05:27 --> 00:05:27

Where?

00:05:27 --> 00:05:29

We see it before the battle of Badr

00:05:29 --> 00:05:31

when the Sahaba radiAllahu anhum are about to

00:05:31 --> 00:05:33

meet the enemy for the first time.

00:05:33 --> 00:05:34

And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la

00:05:34 --> 00:05:37

casts drowsiness upon the companions.

00:05:37 --> 00:05:40

Instead of being nervous wrecks and being incredibly

00:05:40 --> 00:05:42

anxious, Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la

00:05:42 --> 00:05:44

put a calmness and a stillness on them

00:05:44 --> 00:05:47

and made their hearts steadfast so much so

00:05:47 --> 00:05:49

that their swords almost slipped out of their

00:05:49 --> 00:05:49

hands.

00:05:50 --> 00:05:52

And we see also with the mother of

00:05:52 --> 00:05:53

Musa, Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la

00:05:53 --> 00:05:56

says in Surah Al-Qasas,

00:05:56 --> 00:06:00

00:06:00 --> 00:06:02

00:06:02 --> 00:06:05

Allah Subh'anaHu

00:06:05 --> 00:06:07

Wa Ta-A'la says that when the

00:06:07 --> 00:06:09

basket that was placed in the river went

00:06:09 --> 00:06:11

to the house of Pharaoh and Fir'aun's

00:06:11 --> 00:06:15

wife captures the son of the woman or

00:06:15 --> 00:06:19

Musa Alayhi Salaam, and she says,

00:06:19 --> 00:06:22

She

00:06:22 --> 00:06:24

says, this is a joy to me.

00:06:26 --> 00:06:28

The mother of Musa put him in the

00:06:28 --> 00:06:31

Nile River because she was afraid of him

00:06:31 --> 00:06:33

ending up in the hands of Fir'aun.

00:06:33 --> 00:06:34

And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la

00:06:34 --> 00:06:37

sends that basket directly to the house of

00:06:37 --> 00:06:37

Fir'aun.

00:06:38 --> 00:06:40

That would cause anybody to panic.

00:06:42 --> 00:06:43

But that's the plan of Allah Subh'anaHu

00:06:43 --> 00:06:44

Wa Ta-A'la.

00:06:44 --> 00:06:46

And that's the ilm of Allah.

00:06:46 --> 00:06:47

And that's the wisdom of Allah.

00:06:47 --> 00:06:49

And that's the power of Allah.

00:06:49 --> 00:06:51

That He can make Musa grow up in

00:06:51 --> 00:06:53

the very house that the mother of Musa

00:06:53 --> 00:06:54

is afraid of.

00:06:54 --> 00:06:56

And he will be the most protected child

00:06:56 --> 00:06:57

in Egypt because of it.

00:06:57 --> 00:06:58

Because Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la

00:06:58 --> 00:06:59

knows what you do not know.

00:07:00 --> 00:07:03

But Allah had to give her heart steadfastness.

00:07:03 --> 00:07:05

That she can be of

00:07:05 --> 00:07:06

those who believe.

00:07:07 --> 00:07:09

And so you ask Allah Subh'anaHu Wa

00:07:09 --> 00:07:10

Ta-A'la for steadfastness of your heart

00:07:10 --> 00:07:12

as you are going through difficulty.

00:07:13 --> 00:07:16

Number one, steadfastness of the heart allows for

00:07:16 --> 00:07:18

a person to believe in the deen.

00:07:19 --> 00:07:20

Number two, it allows for you to believe

00:07:20 --> 00:07:21

in the promises of Allah.

00:07:22 --> 00:07:23

Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la and

00:07:23 --> 00:07:29

His Prophet they promised that العاقب للمتقين That

00:07:29 --> 00:07:31

the end will always be for the believers.

00:07:31 --> 00:07:33

No matter how dark it seems.

00:07:33 --> 00:07:35

No matter how the entire world goes against

00:07:35 --> 00:07:35

the believers.

00:07:35 --> 00:07:37

No matter how belittled the people are.

00:07:37 --> 00:07:38

No matter how weak they are.

00:07:39 --> 00:07:40

Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la has

00:07:40 --> 00:07:44

That our soldiers

00:07:44 --> 00:07:46

are going to be the ones who win.

00:07:46 --> 00:07:49

Allah Subh'anaHu

00:07:49 --> 00:07:51

Wa Ta-A'la prescribed that I will

00:07:51 --> 00:07:54

win and my messengers and everybody else will

00:07:54 --> 00:07:54

lose.

00:07:54 --> 00:07:57

But you need steadfastness of the heart to

00:07:57 --> 00:07:59

be able to believe in the promise of

00:07:59 --> 00:07:59

Allah.

00:08:00 --> 00:08:07

A third is what the people say when

00:08:07 --> 00:08:08

they enter into the cave.

00:08:09 --> 00:08:12

They say

00:08:12 --> 00:08:15

00:08:15 --> 00:08:18

They go into the cave and they say

00:08:18 --> 00:08:21

enter into the cave Allah will spread out

00:08:21 --> 00:08:23

for you from His mercy.

00:08:24 --> 00:08:27

They're entering into the cave it is a

00:08:27 --> 00:08:29

place that is dark it is a place

00:08:29 --> 00:08:31

that has no amenities it is a place

00:08:31 --> 00:08:33

that is constricted it is a place that

00:08:33 --> 00:08:35

has no heat it is a place that

00:08:35 --> 00:08:37

is cold it is a place that has

00:08:37 --> 00:08:39

nothing but what are they expecting to find?

00:08:39 --> 00:08:41

They're expecting to find the mercy of Allah.

00:08:42 --> 00:08:46

And that shows incredible optimism that a person

00:08:46 --> 00:08:47

even as they're entering into the cave of

00:08:47 --> 00:08:51

their life the cave of oppression or the

00:08:51 --> 00:08:54

cave of imprisonment or the cave of grief

00:08:54 --> 00:08:56

or the cave of poverty that a person

00:08:56 --> 00:08:59

has optimism in Allah

00:08:59 --> 00:09:02

رَحْمَتِهِ that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala because

00:09:02 --> 00:09:04

I know that Allah is the Rahman that

00:09:04 --> 00:09:07

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will provide for

00:09:07 --> 00:09:10

me mercy from where I don't expect and

00:09:10 --> 00:09:12

we read in Surah Al-Kahf how Allah

00:09:12 --> 00:09:15

subhanahu wa ta'ala dealt with them and

00:09:15 --> 00:09:18

gave them divine care and how Allah subhanahu

00:09:18 --> 00:09:20

wa ta'ala watched over them and protected

00:09:20 --> 00:09:23

00:09:23 --> 00:09:31

00:09:31 --> 00:09:33

00:09:33 --> 00:09:39

الكثير the third is optimism having optimism in

00:09:39 --> 00:09:41

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala when you see

00:09:41 --> 00:09:42

how Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala deals with

00:09:42 --> 00:09:45

the righteous but then the fourth and this

00:09:45 --> 00:09:47

is the last one Allah subhanahu wa ta

00:09:47 --> 00:09:48

'ala as you know causes them to go

00:09:48 --> 00:09:51

to sleep for hundreds of years 309 years

00:09:51 --> 00:09:53

to be exact and then he resurrects them

00:09:53 --> 00:09:55

and Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala specifically uses

00:09:55 --> 00:09:58

the word بَعْث in their story twice to

00:09:58 --> 00:10:01

indicate the resurrection that the mushrikeen of Mecca

00:10:01 --> 00:10:03

did not believe in and Allah subhanahu wa

00:10:03 --> 00:10:05

ta'ala then causes for them to be

00:10:05 --> 00:10:08

resurrected and they come out and Allah says

00:10:08 --> 00:10:11

00:10:12 --> 00:10:15

We caused them to interact with the people

00:10:15 --> 00:10:17

of the town that they may come to

00:10:17 --> 00:10:19

know that the promise of Allah subhanahu wa

00:10:19 --> 00:10:21

ta'ala is true for who to know

00:10:21 --> 00:10:23

that the promise of Allah is true for

00:10:23 --> 00:10:26

Ashabul Kahf that they recognize that the promise

00:10:26 --> 00:10:28

of Allah is true you see they were

00:10:28 --> 00:10:31

a people who fled a society that was

00:10:31 --> 00:10:34

idolatrous because they knew that they did not

00:10:34 --> 00:10:38

have the power to confront them they were

00:10:38 --> 00:10:41

going to be persecuted

00:10:41 --> 00:10:44

00:10:44 --> 00:10:47

أَبَدَى they said that if our people have

00:10:47 --> 00:10:48

power over us they're going to stone us

00:10:49 --> 00:10:50

or they're going to force us back into

00:10:50 --> 00:10:54

our religion and so they fled to seek

00:10:54 --> 00:10:57

refuge in a cave but Allah subhanahu wa

00:10:57 --> 00:10:58

ta'ala caused them to sleep for that

00:10:58 --> 00:11:00

period of time and when they came out

00:11:00 --> 00:11:03

they found that that entire society had become

00:11:03 --> 00:11:06

Muslim so that they may come to know

00:11:06 --> 00:11:09

that the promise of Allah is true and

00:11:09 --> 00:11:12

I share this to you because the promise

00:11:12 --> 00:11:15

of Allah is true and it may be

00:11:15 --> 00:11:17

that you are expecting the promise of Allah

00:11:17 --> 00:11:19

to happen in one year or two years

00:11:19 --> 00:11:21

or three years or four years but the

00:11:21 --> 00:11:24

promise of Allah is not tied to your

00:11:24 --> 00:11:27

time span it is not tied to how

00:11:27 --> 00:11:31

you feel it should pass it is tied

00:11:31 --> 00:11:34

to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala's timing and

00:11:34 --> 00:11:36

these people Ashab ul Kahf they had to

00:11:36 --> 00:11:40

have an extended life period Allah subhanahu wa

00:11:40 --> 00:11:42

ta'ala caused them to die for 300

00:11:42 --> 00:11:44

years just so that they could have the

00:11:44 --> 00:11:46

gift to witness that the promise of Allah

00:11:46 --> 00:11:48

subhanahu wa ta'ala is true and so

00:11:48 --> 00:11:49

we believe that the promise of Allah is

00:11:49 --> 00:11:52

true we believe that Palestine will be free

00:11:52 --> 00:11:53

we believe that there will come a time

00:11:53 --> 00:11:55

when the Ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa

00:11:55 --> 00:11:57

sallam will be led by the righteous and

00:11:57 --> 00:11:59

not be led by the wicked we believe

00:11:59 --> 00:12:01

in a time Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

00:12:01 --> 00:12:06

says that we will give establishment to those

00:12:06 --> 00:12:10

who have been oppressed those that have been

00:12:10 --> 00:12:12

established oppressed in the east and the west

00:12:12 --> 00:12:14

that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will make

00:12:14 --> 00:12:16

them a imma and he will make them

00:12:16 --> 00:12:18

of those who inherit the land that is

00:12:18 --> 00:12:20

a promise of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

00:12:20 --> 00:12:22

whether or not it happens next year or

00:12:22 --> 00:12:24

the year after what we are required to

00:12:24 --> 00:12:26

do is to believe in that promise to

00:12:26 --> 00:12:28

have steadfastness with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

00:12:28 --> 00:12:30

have rapt of our heart and that we

00:12:30 --> 00:12:32

ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to grant

00:12:32 --> 00:12:34

us a worship of him that he loves

00:12:34 --> 00:12:36

and that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allow

00:12:36 --> 00:12:39

us to worship him as he loves until

00:12:39 --> 00:12:40

the day we meet him and that he

00:12:40 --> 00:12:42

make the best of our days the day

00:12:42 --> 00:12:43

that we meet him we ask Allah azawajal

00:12:43 --> 00:12:44

to allow us to hear the speech and

00:12:44 --> 00:12:46

to follow the best of it we ask

00:12:46 --> 00:12:49

Allah azawajal to grant freedom to our brothers

00:12:49 --> 00:12:51

and sisters who are occupied in Palestine and

00:12:51 --> 00:12:56

to bring safety and security to them and

00:12:56 --> 00:12:57

we ask Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to

00:12:57 --> 00:13:00

relieve the blood shed from the Muslims all

00:13:00 --> 00:13:01

over the world whether it be in Sudan

00:13:01 --> 00:13:03

or whether it be the Uyghurs in China

00:13:03 --> 00:13:04

or whether it be our brothers and sisters

00:13:04 --> 00:13:06

in Bangladesh that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

00:13:06 --> 00:13:08

brings stability to the Muslim world and that

00:13:08 --> 00:13:10

Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala guide us and

00:13:10 --> 00:13:12

guide our hearts and guide us to the

00:13:12 --> 00:13:24

unity that he loves Arabic
