All praise is due to Allah.
We seek His guidance and His forgiveness and
we seek refuge in Allah from the evil
of ourselves and the whispering of our desires.
Whom Allah guides, no one can misguide and
whom He allows to be misled, no one
can guide and I bear witness that there
is nothing worthy of worship except Allah alone
having no partners and that Muhammad sallallahu alayhi
wasallam is His slave and His messenger and
His perfect worshipper.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says in the
Qur'an, O you who believe, fear Allah
as He deserves to be feared and do
not die except in a state of Islam.
And Allah says, O mankind, fear your Lord
who created you from a single soul and
produced from that soul its mate and made
from their combination many men and women.
So fear your Lord whom you ask each
other by and by the ties of kinship,
verily Allah is ever watchful over you.
And Allah says, O you who believe, fear
Allah and say that which is correct, He
will correct for you your deeds and forgive
you your sins.
And whoever obeys Allah and His messenger, then
they are indeed victorious.
To proceed, I wanted to begin by simply
congratulating the ummah of Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wasallam
on the happiness that we're seeing in Ash
-Sham.
This blessed place that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala says, سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي أَسْرَى بِعَبْدِهِ لَيْلًا مِنَ
الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ الْأَقْصَى الَّذِي بَارَكْنَا حَوْلَهُ
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, this masjid,
that its surrounding area has been blessed and
that surrounding area is the entire region of
Ash-Sham.
And one of the most amazing things that
you'll find in hadith literature is that the
Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam, when he would speak
about Ash-Sham, he would speak about it
as if it was part and parcel, not
part and parcel, but a major part of
the Muslim world even though Ash-Sham was
not Muslim during his time.
Ash-Sham was not Muslim during the time
of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.
Yet he would say,
Oh Allah bless our Sham
and bless our Yemen.
And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam would say,
and he would say that Ash-Sham was
one of the metrics of the righteousness of
the Ummah.
He would say,
That if the people of Ash
-Sham become corrupt, then there is no goodness
in you.
And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam would say,
That Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala is taking care of Ash-Sham
for me.
And the virtues of Ash-Sham are many.
We've talked about that in many other places
and discussions, but I wanted to just share
three points of benefit briefly in this khutbah
insha'Allah ta'ala.
Number one, this Ummah is an Ummah that
doesn't die.
This Ummah is an Ummah that doesn't die.
You know, the first verse of Surah Al
-Mulk, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
You know, when you read a verse like
this and you contextualize it with what you
are seeing, it gives you a completely different
lens, a completely different understanding.
When you see that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala is saying that He is the one
who controls everything.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says,
Oh Allah, you are the
owner of the dominion.
You give it to whomever you wish, but
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, you take it
from whoever you wish and you honor who
you wish and you debase whom you wish.
But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says to
come back to Surah Tabarak, Allah subhanahu wa
Allah is able to do all things.
And one of the blessings, one of the
benefits of understanding this name Al-Qadir, which
appears in over 30 places in the Quran
Again and
again and again, Allah says that He is
able to do all things.
One of the benefits of understanding this name
is that you recognize that if Allah is
Al-Qadir, then I never stop making du
'a for what I want.
Sometimes that thing that we want becomes so
distant, that job that a person wants, or
that marriage, or that child, or that freedom
from occupation, it becomes so distant that a
person finds that they stop making du'a
for it.
They kind of run out of energy, they
run out of, or maybe they run out
of hope, and they say, you know what,
maybe this isn't written for me, so let
me focus my du'as on something else.
And I'm sure that over the past 13
or 14 years, since the time where we've
been praying for Sania, that some people might
have stopped and focused on other things.
Or sometimes the pain that a person has
becomes so present, that thing that you don't
want, that illness, or that poverty, or that
oppression, becomes so constant, becomes so cemented in
a person's life or in a person's world,
where they stop making du'a for it
to be removed.
I'm just stuck with this sickness.
I'm stuck with this oppression.
I'm stuck with this circumstance.
I'm stuck with this brokenness.
But if a person believes that Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la is Al-Qadeer,
Allah is able to do all things, then
I'm constantly going to continue to make du
'a for it, because I don't know when
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la will
decree for it to be changed.
And in the past two weeks, look at
how quickly Al-Qadeer changed the circumstances of
the people of Ishaan.
So we become inspired.
We become again reconnected with Allah Subh'anaHu
Wa Ta-A'la's names and attributes.
We become reconnected with du'a.
We become a people Insha'Allah Ta'ala
who recognize Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A
'la's power over all things.
The second thing briefly, Insha'Allah Ta'ala,
and I'll end soon Insha'Allah, but the
second thing is understanding that this is an
ummah that has agency.
You know, some of people's responses to what
has been going on immediately is as if
the entire ummah is pawns on the chessboard
of imperialists.
That everything that we do or don't do,
someone else is already planning and you're just
falling into the plan of this person.
As if the entire world, including imperial powers,
are not all under the plan of Allah
Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says,
Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says they plot
and plan and Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la plots and plans.
And Allah is the best planner.
There's nobody who outplans Allah.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says,
Did Allah Subh
'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la not make the
hidden plan of Abraha a superpower?
The Abyssinians, did Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta
-A'la not make their hidden plan misguided?
And Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la
would destroy them.
And so we are an ummah, we don't
want to be like Bani Israel who said
to Musa, these are people who are Jabari.
No, no, no, we have no agency.
We have no power.
They're the ones who have power.
We're not going to go with you.
As if Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A
'la is not the greatest of all powers.
And so yes, this doesn't mean that a
person is dismissive.
That doesn't mean that a person doesn't plan.
But at the end of the day, we
are a people, you know, you know, they
say, if you believe that you can, or
if you believe that you can't, either way,
you're probably right.
And that's just in life.
If a person believes that they can, you'll
find that they'll overachieve in life.
Because they always believe that they can.
And if a person always believes that they
can't, then they'll underachieve.
So we are an ummah that believes in
agency.
And what we are required to do is
to work towards what Allah Subh'anaHu Wa
Ta-A'la loves.
And one of the greatest things that Allah
Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la loves, Allah
Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la did not
write for us to be humiliated.
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says
that al-izzah belongs to Allah and the
messenger and the believers.
But the hypocrites, they don't know.
And the third thing, and I'll end with
this, is to recognize and to be reminded
of how evil oppression is.
As we're seeing these prisons be opened, and
we're seeing the horrifying figures of people who
have been imprisoned unjustly for decades coming out
to the sun for the first time.
And the joy of families being reunited.
And the revulsion that we have towards those
who oppress them.
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam says,
That oppression is darkness on the day
of judgment.
And Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam tells us that
Allah Subh'anaHu Wa Ta-A'la says,
Allah says, I have
made oppression haram upon myself.
And I have made it haram for you.
So do not oppress one another.
And so as we are revulsed, as we
reject, as we are angered and enraged by
the oppression that we see in far off
places, one of the things that we always
have to work on and make sure is
that we are not oppressors ourselves.
And I'll end with this hadith.
Hadith is in Ibn Majah.
The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, when the Muslims
came back from Abyssinia after having migrated for
over 10 years, and they finally came back
in the seventh year of the hijrah after
Khaibar, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked, he asked
some of them a question and he said,
and this is hadith of Jabir Ibn Abdullah,
he says, what's the most amazing thing that
you saw in the land of Abyssinia?
And so one of the sahaba, he said,
Ya Rasulullah, while one, we saw a nun,
she was walking and she had a vessel
of water on her head.
And as she was walking, minding her business,
a young man came from behind and he
pushed her down onto the ground.
And the vessel of water broke.
And so then the woman got up and
she said to the young man, she said,
You will know, O traitor, that on the
day of judgment, when Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala sets up the kursi and hands and
feet talk about what they used to earn,
you're going to come to know between this
affair between you and me very soon.
So she's threatening the man with the day
of judgment.
But Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, he commented on
that story and he said, Sadaqat, Sadaqat.
'ifihim min shadidihim.
He said, how can Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta
'ala honor an ummah where the marginalized, where
the weak do not have a mechanism to
secure their rights from the strong?
How?
Kaifa yuqaddisullah.
i.e. how can Allah purify or how
can Allah bless a nation where the poor
or the weak or the marginalized do not
have the ability to secure their rights from
the strong?
And so if we want Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala to bless our families, we want
Allah to bless our community, we want Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to bless our country,
we want Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to
bless our ummah, one of the things that
we have to be concerned with is to
make sure that oppression does not happen in
our jurisdictions, whatever jurisdiction we have.
kullukum ra'ayn wakullukum mas'oolun ar-ra
'ayyati.
That every single one of you is a
shepherd and every single one of you is
responsible for their flock.
And that we make sure that we've created
systems and mechanisms for those who are weak
to be able to secure their rights from
the strong.
Aqoolu ma samihtoon fastaghfirullah li walakum fastaghfiruhu innahu
al-ghafoorur raheem.
Alhamdulillah wa salatu wa salamu ala rasoolillah wa
ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim wa sallim
We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to
protect the people of Syria, that Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala opens up for them the
doors of His mercy, that Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala heals their brokenness, that Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala reunites their families and bring
them back to their homes, and that Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala makes Syria as He
has always made Syria a doorstep from the
freedom of Palestine.
We ask Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to
bless their steps and to bless their decisions
and to bless their nation.
Allahumma ameen and ours.
