Ahsan Hanif – Quran Tafseer – Page 184 – The Consequences Of Disbelief

AI: Summary ©
The history and actions of Islam have caused negative consequences, including evil behavior and false accusations. The importance of following rules and following guidance is emphasized, as well as avoiding false accusations and breaking treaty. The importance of trusting in Islam's punishment, as well as belief in actions is emphasized. It is crucial to not allowing people to get away from treaty and use it as a means to subvert actions, as it is not a means to win and is not a means to win. The importance of trusting in Islam's actions is emphasized, and physical means and practical steps are also emphasized.
AI: Summary ©
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the
accursed.
And if only you could see when the
angels take the souls of the disbelievers, how
they strike their faces and their backs, it
will be said, taste the punishment of the
fire.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says because on
the day of Badr as we know it,
it's not only specific to the day of
Badr.
But on the day of Badr, for example,
a number of the Quraysh died.
A number of them were killed on that
battlefield, including a good number of their leaders
and their chieftains and their nobles who were
from the major enemies of Islam and the
Prophet ﷺ.
And Allah azzawajal after saying or mentioning in
the previous episode, it was said in those
verses, the mindset, the difference in the mindset
between the two groups of people or the
two armies.
Allah azzawajal now says that when those people
met their end from the disbelievers, if only
you could see it when the angels came
to take their souls.
And how they were striking them on their
faces and on their backs, meaning in extracting
their souls.
Because the soul of the disbeliever, as the
Prophet ﷺ told us in that famous hadith
of Al-Bara' ibn A'azib, it's a
long narration.
But the hadith says that the soul of
the disbeliever holds on and it clings to
the body.
It doesn't want to leave because it knows
at that moment now the reality of the
situation.
It knows the truth and it knows that
once it leaves, it will be punished and
that it will be shrouded in an evil
way.
And that it will have nothing except the
fire and the punishment and the torment of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And so it holds on and the Prophet
ﷺ described in the hadith, it's as if
you take some type of a metal hook
and you're taking it through a ball of
wool, of cotton wool that is clinging together.
And you have to drag it through and
out the other end.
And that is how much friction and how
difficult or how much that soul tries to
hold on.
And so the angels strike it and they
beat it until it eventually comes out.
And that is why Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala says, Because what they will have after
that is an even greater or worse or
further worse punishment that Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala has prepared for them.
Why?
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala then says in
This is what is caused
by your own hands and what you have
stored up for yourself.
For Allah is never unjust to His creatures.
It is because of what you did, because
of what your hands earned, because of your
actions, because of the things that you did
and the deeds that you performed.
That is the reason why.
These were the people of arrogance.
These were the people of conceit.
These were the people who showed off, who
didn't worship Allah, never had any humbleness before
Allah, didn't want to believe in Allah, didn't
want to worship Allah azza wa jal, didn't
want to accept the Prophet salallahu alayhi wasalam
and his words, didn't want to believe in
the Akhirah, didn't want to accept the fact
that there would be an accounting or a
judgment on Yawm al Qiyamah.
And so because of everything that they did,
disobedience of Allah, evil sins, kufr, everything else,
now this is your result.
It is because of
what you did.
And Allah azza
wa jal is not unjust to His creatures.
Allah didn't, Allah is not the one who
forced you to do this.
Allah azza wa jal isn't just punishing you
for no reason.
It is because of what you did and
the decisions that you made and the direction
that you chose in the dunya that Allah
azza wa jal is now going to punish
you.
And they are not the first to be
punished.
There were nations that came and made similar
choices and they too were punished.
And Allah azza wa jal gives us those
examples as a reminder.
Beware, be careful, you know that people came
before you and you can see even today
the signs of their destruction and their punishment.
So take heed and listen from them.
And that is what Allah azza wa jal
gives to us the example of Pharaoh and
his people in verse 52.
They are like Pharaoh's people and those
before them who ignored Allah's signs.
So Allah punished them for their sins.
Allah is strong and severe in His punishment.
You are not the first people to disbelieve
in Allah and you won't be the last.
But from those who came before you from
the past nations, there are people who took
similar directions of travel, made similar decisions, did
similar things, disobeyed Allah in similar ways and
disbelieved in Him in similar ways.
Like for example the people of Pharaoh.
Those who came before them,
Aad and Thamud and the people of Median
and all of those nations, the people of
Lot, all of those nations that Allah mentions
in the Quran.
What did they do?
They disbelieved in Allah, the
signs of Allah, the revelations of Allah, the
messengers of Allah.
So Allah took them and
punished them as a result of their misdeeds
and their kufr and their disbelief and their
sins.
And indeed Allah is Strong
and severe in His punishment.
But Allah عز و جل only does this
because of the disbelief of people.
And look at how those nations, as we
mentioned before when we were going through this
in detail in Surah Al-A'raf.
How Allah favoured the people of Pharaoh.
How Allah blessed the people of Ad and
Thamud and Median.
How Allah gave to each one of them
many many different things that would help them
in the dunya.
But when the message of Allah came, they
rejected them.
And when they turned away from Allah, and
instead of showing gratitude, they showed ingratitude.
Instead of obedience, they showed disobedience.
Instead of belief, they displayed disbelief.
That is when the punishment of Allah comes
upon them as Allah says in verse 53.
He did this because Allah would
never change a favour He had conferred on
a people.
Unless they changed that which was within themselves.
For Allah is all-hearing and all-knowing.
Allah says that, meaning the punishment of Allah
that fell upon you.
Those nations that came before you, the way
that they were destroyed.
Despite the many blessings that Allah showered upon
them, despite the many bounties that Allah gave
to them.
Allah wouldn't do that to them.
Allah
wouldn't change or take away the blessings that
He conferred upon them.
And those blessings are there so that they
would show gratitude.
That they would be able to worship Allah.
That they would see the signs of Allah
in that which Allah عز و جل gave
to them.
Allah سبحانه و تعالى doesn't change that, doesn't
punish them.
Until they themselves are
the ones who change.
From obedience to disobedience, from belief to disbelief,
from gratitude to ingratitude.
They reject every single sign of Allah.
And they harm the prophets of Allah and
they harm the believers who believe in Allah
And they prevent people from the path of
Allah
And that is when Allah
destroys them.
That is when Allah decides to punish them.
That is when Allah عز و جل holds
them to account for the evil that they
did.
And Allah sees all
and He knows all and He hears all
جل gives again the example of the past
nations.
They are indeed like Pharaoh's
people and those who came before them who
denied the signs of their Lord.
We destroyed them for their sins and we
drowned Pharaoh's people for they were all evil
doers.
So again Allah عز و جل gives the
example of the past nations.
The past nations Allah
to them many blessings.
And Allah gave to them many favors.
And Allah عز و جل even in the
time of the Prophet
gave to the Quraysh many favors and that
is why Allah عز و جل dedicates a
whole surah to them in the Qur'an.
Surah Quraysh
That is a surah that
speaks about the many blessings, the many favors
that Allah conferred upon Quraysh, the ease that
Allah gave to them, the safety that Allah
gave to them, the provision that Allah brought
for them.
Despite Makkah being a barren land, a place
that no one would travel to usually, not
a place for trade and commerce, but Allah
عز و جل gave to them all of
the blessings because Allah honored Makkah.
And therefore the people of Makkah that were
residing within it were honored also.
Allah عز و جل gave to them their
travels and their caravans of trade in the
summer and the winter to Ash-Sham and
Yemen.
And so they were people that Allah favored.
But that favor is only good if those
people use that favor to come closer to
Allah عز و جل and believe in Him.
But when the Quraysh turned away or a
good number of them turned away, then Allah
عز و جل tells us what happened to
them in this surah and on the day
of Badr.
And likewise the people who came before.
In the past nations Allah
mentions in so many places in the Qur
'an the many things that they received in
terms of blessings, the many favors that Allah
placed upon them.
But when they turned away, they rejected Allah,
they rejected their messengers and prophets that Allah
sent to them, they denied the revelations and
the signs of Allah عز و جل, then
they deserve the punishment of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
And that is why Allah
They rejected the signs of their Lord.
They didn't believe in anything.
They didn't accept any of it.
So we destroyed them as a
result of their evil, their sins, their disbelief.
The people of Nuh, the people of Ad,
the people of Thamud, the people of Lut
and the people of Madian, the people of
Pharaoh destroyed and we see signs of their
destruction even till today.
Why?
Because of the evil that they committed.
And we drowned the people
of Pharaoh.
Each one of them was
an evildoer.
Each one of them were people who were
oppressive.
Allah didn't oppress them.
Allah didn't do injustice to them.
Rather they were the ones when they turned
away from Allah and they disbelieved in Him,
they were deserving of the punishment and the
wrath of Allah عز و جل.
And so Allah سبحانه وتعالى sent it upon
them.
And so likewise Allah عز و جل in
this surah is giving us these lessons.
That those people who turn away from Allah,
they too will be punished.
It may not be the punishment that Allah
sent down to the previous nations because Allah
promised not to destroy the Ummah of the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in that way.
But that doesn't mean that they can't be
punished in other ways.
Like for example what happened on the Battle
of Badr to the leaders of Quraysh.
Likewise when people are destroyed or they die
and they lose their lives and their wealth
in other ways, Allah still punishes people in
ways that He chooses سبحانه وتعالى.
Allah سبحانه وتعالى then goes on to say
in verse 55 The
worst creatures in the sight of Allah are
those who reject Him and will not believe.
Allah عز و جل says and He will
mention three things, two in this verse and
one in the next verse, verse 56.
The three major attributes that make people from
the worst of Allah's creations, from the worst
of Allah's creatures.
The first two are the ones that are
mentioned here in this verse and both of
them are to do with the issue of
Tawheed and Iman and belief.
Allah سبحانه وتعالى says that the worst of
creatures in the sight of Allah are those
who have Kufr and they don't have Iman.
They disbelieve and they don't have faith.
They reject the signs of Allah, they reject
Allah, they reject Yawm al-Qiyamah, they reject
the messengers of Allah, the revelations of Allah
عز و جل, and they refuse to accept
Islam.
They refuse to have Iman.
They refuse to have faith and belief in
Allah
They are the worst of creatures and the
worst of people in the sight of Allah
And then Allah سبحانه وتعالى gives a third
and further attribute of them in verse 56
and He says الَّذِينَ عَاهَدْتَ مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ يَنْقُضُونَ
Who
whenever you make a treaty with them, they
break it for they have no fear of
Allah.
So they have Kufr, disbelief.
They have no Iman, no faith in Allah
and they are people who are treacherous.
They have Khiyanah.
They are people of treacherous, of treachery.
They are people who deceive.
They are people who break their treaties and
their oaths that they made with you.
These are the worst of people in the
sight of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
Why?
Because they have no fear of Allah عز
And that is why as we mentioned when
we were going through the Tafsir of Surah
Al-Ma'idah.
When Allah عز و جل at the beginning
of that Surah says to the people of
Iman, أَوْفُوا بِالْعُقُودِ Uphold your covenants, your treaties,
your oaths.
Because that is the difference, one of the
major differences between the believer and the disbeliever.
That our word is something which carries weight
because we take an oath seriously.
When we make a promise or we take
an oath or we say something by the
name of Allah عز و جل, that is
something which holds a weight within our hearts
because we are conscious of Allah and fear
Allah.
I know that we will stand before Allah
عز و جل to be held to account
for Him.
But those people who don't have Iman, they
don't believe in Allah.
It doesn't make a difference to them if
they break their treaties because they don't fear
any punishment of Allah.
They don't fear any divine wrath or anger
of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
And so for many of them, it is
easy to break the treaties that they make.
And that is why Allah
then speaks in the next couple of verses
about the way that the believers should treat
them.
Meaning the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم should
deal with these people who have this attitude
towards the treaties and the covenants that they
make.
And we see an example of this later
on in the life of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم in the treaty of Hudaybiyyah
and then what will lead, the circumstances that
lead to the conquest of Mecca when the
Quraysh broke the treaty that they made with
And so here Allah عز و جل is
speaking about these verses concerning those people.
And again, these are verses that Allah عز
و جل is addressing within the leaders of
the Muslims in the way that they make
treaties between their nations and their peoples and
the way that they should deal with this.
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى says in verse 57, فَإِمَّا
And if you meet them in battle
then make a fearsome example of them to
those who come after them so that they
may take heed.
Meaning that these people who have no Iman,
disbelieve in Allah and they broke the treaties
that they make with you.
Then if you meet them on the battlefield,
then be harsh with them.
Make an example of them, meaning defeat them
and be harsh with them so that the
people will know that it's not an easy
thing to break their covenant with the Muslims.
So Allah عز و جل is speaking here
about a group of people that had a
covenant with the Muslims, a peace treaty for
example.
Then they are treacherous and they break that
treaty.
If you meet these people or messenger of
Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم or leader of
the Muslims, you meet them on the battlefield,
then show to them the strength of the
Muslims.
So that other people will know that they
shouldn't just break their treaties.
Because some people uphold their treaties, why?
Because of their fear of Allah.
Because they know that Allah will hold them
to account سبحانه وتعالى.
And this is by the way for Muslims
today as well.
Muslims that will uphold the covenants that they
make, the treaties that they make, the contracts
that they sign, the oaths that they take,
whatever it may be, the promises that they
make, they do it because of their fear
of Allah عز و جل.
And that is something which makes them mindful
and conscious of that treaty and the terms
of it.
And there are other people today, Muslims and
non-Muslims, that do so because they fear
repercussion.
They fear punishment.
They fear that someone in authority will come
and hold them to account.
So people obey the law because they fear
going to jail.
They fear the police.
They fear that they will be taken to
prison, whatever it may be, or fined or
whatever it is.
That is how people work.
The believer is the one who should, even
though they are aware of those other punishments,
first and foremost, they should be fearful of
Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى and uphold their covenants
accordingly as a result.
And as for those people who don't fear
that, then sometimes the Muslim ruler has to
give those punishments, has to have those things
in place, just as in every society, Muslim
and non-Muslim, we have these laws and
people are told that there are certain punishments
and penalties that will be incurred if you
do A, B, C, or D, and that's
because people understand that level of authority.
They understand when there is force upon them,
that they must do certain things that otherwise
perhaps they would be unwilling to do.
So likewise here, the Muslim ruler is told
that for other people to understand that they
shouldn't break their treaties, that if there are
terms to a treaty, they should stick with
them.
If a group does break them, then B,
or make a fierce example, a fearsome example
of them, so that those who come after
them will take heed.
That those who come after them will take
heed.
Allah Azzawajal mentions in verse 58 another group
of people.
And if
you learn of treachery on the part of
any people, then throw their treaty back at
them for Allah does not love the treacherous.
And Allah Azzawajal says here that this is
another group of people.
You have a treaty with them and a
covenant.
But you can see all of the different
signs that show that they are going to
break the treaty or they're about to break
the treaty or they have broken the treaty
in one way or another.
Those people then shouldn't be allowed to get
away with this.
They shouldn't be allowed to, if you like,
pull the wool over the eyes of the
Muslim ruler.
Shouldn't be allowed to do all of these
things that are breaching the spirit of the
treaty and the terms of the treaty and
then be allowed to get away with it.
Rather Allah Azzawajal says
Then throw the treaty back to them and
tell them that it's no longer a treaty
between us and you.
Meaning we don't think you're upholding your treaty.
You're not doing this the way that it
should be done.
You're not doing this correctly.
You're using this as a means to subvert
us in this way and that.
And so therefore this treaty between us and
you is no longer valid.
And so Allah Azzawajal is telling the Prophet
the way that he should deal with these
people.
Just as when the Quraish broke the treaty
of Hudaybiyah, the Prophet s.a.w. told
them we're going to come and conquer the
city of Mecca.
And even when Abu Sufyan came and others
came to try to plead with the Prophet
s.a.w. and they went to the
likes of Al-Abbas رضي الله عنه the
uncle of the Prophet s.a.w. that
he shouldn't proceed on their behalf and so
on.
Because they knew that they had done something
wrong.
The Prophet s.a.w. said No, no
longer is there a treaty between us and
you.
You broke it.
Now don't come trying to pretend or to
make false excuses.
You openly knew what you were doing.
You willingly broke it.
You thought that there would be no repercussions.
And now that there are going to be,
you're not willing to accept the results of
your actions.
And that is why Allah s.w.t
Allah does
not love those who are treacherous.
And again as we said that even though
Allah s.w.t is speaking here about
those people who are rulers and treaties between
nations and so on.
This is a general principle in our religion.
That Allah does not love those who are
treacherous even amongst the Muslims.
People who make oaths and they break them.
They say something and they're false in what
they say.
They're given a trust and they betray their
trust.
And that is why the Prophet s.a
.w. said that these are from the signs
of hypocrisy.
They are signs of hypocrisy.
Because the Muslim should be someone who his
word is his bond.
His word is something which has weight to
it.
His word is something which he speaks or
she speaks and she knows that Allah s
.w.t is recording it and Allah is
a witness over it and that Allah s
.w.t will hold them to account for
it and so Allah s.w.t does
not love those people who are treacherous in
their words.
Allah s.w.t then says in verse
The disbelievers should not think that they
have won for they cannot escape.
Meaning no matter what they do, no matter
what treachery they may perpetrate, no matter what
evil they do, no matter what plans they
have, they should never think that they have
won because even if they are able to
overcome the Muslims in some ways, even if
they are able to best them in some
way or another, they will never escape the
punishment of Allah.
They will never escape the counting of Allah
a.s.w.t and that is the
beauty of our Iman that even if there
are people who are oppressed in this life
and there are people who are oppressors and
no one holds them to account, no one
brings them to court, no one punishes them,
no one holds them to account, they have
not escaped.
Why?
Because they will come to the greatest of
all courts, before the greatest of all judges
and kings and there they will be given
their true justice or the justice that is
due to them.
And Allah a.s.w.t, no one
can escape His punishment, no one can escape
His accounting.
In the final verse that we will take
in today's episode in verse number 60, Allah
a.s.w.t then tells the believers
that they should prepare that just as they
have belief in Allah, trust in Allah a
.s.w.t, they have that iman in
Allah a.s.w.t, they have that
dhikr of Allah s.w.t, they have
humility and humbleness before Allah a.s.w
.t, that is the spiritual side, but the
believer always takes the practical steps as well.
And so you have tawakkul in Allah but
at the same time you also do what
Allah has commanded from the things that He
has made permissible for you.
Allah a.s.w.t says in verse
Prepare whatever forces you can master,
including war horses, to frighten off Allah's enemies
and yours and warn others unknown to you
but known to Allah.
Whatever you give in Allah's cause will be
repaid to you in full, and you will
not be wronged.
Allah is really saying that yes, you have
the belief in Allah, the trust in Allah,
but at the same time prepare physically the
forces that you have and that you can
master.
The strength that you have, whether
that be the weaponry, whether that be the
armor, whether that be training.
As the Prophet ﷺ said in the hadith
of Uqba ibn Aamir r.a, in Sahih
That from that
strength that you can master is to practice
archery, رِبَاطِ الْخَيْل War horses that you train
and the people that ride them.
These are the physical things that you do,
and that is a general principle in our
religion.
You trust in Allah for your rizq, but
it means that you must also go and
try to earn that rizq.
As the Prophet ﷺ told us, if you
truly trust in Allah, then Allah will provide
for you as He provides for the bird.
Leaves in the morning with an empty stomach
returns with a full one.
The bird trusts in Allah, but it still
leaves, still searches, still looks, still hunts, still
finds, and so that is from the practical
things that you have to do.
So trust in Allah, believe in Allah, but
also take the physical means and the practical
steps.
That you may
cast fear into the hearts of Allah's enemies
and yours.
And other enemies that you
are yet not to know.
Other enemies besides these people because
the Muslims knew of certain enemies, like the
Quraish is an enemy, we know them, these
are our enemies, but there are other enemies
that are unknown to you.
Other tribes in Arabia and beyond Arabia that
you are yet to come into contact with,
you don't know them.
But your actions and the way that you
prepare and what happened for example in the
Battle of Badr, it caused reverberations across all
of Arabia.
Everyone took notice.
Everyone stood up and said, what's happened there?
So you may not necessarily know, but people
are noticing.
You may not know
them, but Allah Azzawajal knows them.
And
that which you give in the path of
Allah Azzawajal يُوَفَّأْ إِلَيْكُمْ Allah will give to
you full in its return, meaning in terms
of its reward وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَ And you
will not be wronged in any of that.
And so this religion is a religion that
is practical.
It is not just a religion that is
only spiritual or that religion that only focuses
on the heart, but rather it focuses on
the whole, the whole package, the heart, the
soul, the body, the spiritual side, the physical
side, the means, everything that a person needs
to do in order to worship Allah Azzawajal
and in order to live their life fulfilling
the commands of Allah Azzawajal as a Muslim.
And with that, we come to the end
of today's episode.
