Muhammad.
Welcome to another episode of our tafsir
page by page and InshaAllah ta'ala. Today we
are on page 110 which is in the
6 Jews of the Quran Surah Al Mahida.
In the previous episode we mentioned a number
of verses in which Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
spoke about the pledge and covenant that he
took with Bani Israel
and how they broke that pledge and covenant.
The pledge and covenant that Allah took with
them was that Allah would give them his
divine aid and protection and help and assistance
subhanahu wa ta'ala so long as they fulfilled
their part of the covenant. And that is
that they would establish the salah and give
the zakah and believe in all of the
messengers of Allah and support them and give
to Allah azza wa Jalal in return for
fulfilling that pledge. Allah
says that they would have had all of
their sins expiated and forgiven
That Allah would have given to them the
reward of Jannah
under which rivers
flow. However, then Allah mentioned that they broke
that pledge or many from amongst them broke
that pledge and as a result they were
cursed by Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and Allah
hardened their hearts so that they were not
able to receive the admonition or the reminder
And that is why many of them were
not able to then accept the message of
the prophet salallahu alaihi wasallam. Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala says that they used to distort the
message of Allah
So the covenant that they took in the
pledge, they broke that pledge and that is
a reminder to us the ummah of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam that we also have
a pledge from Allah subhanahu ta'ala
that we should worship him alone and fulfill
our obligations and our duties as muslims and
stay away from the Haram and the prohibitions
and that Allah ajwala will return give us
our reward as well.
However,
if we break that pledge and that covenant
then we are also
under the threat of punishment from Allah Subhanahu
wa Ta'ala. Today we begin or we continue
with verse number 14 of Surah Al Maidah
And that is the statement of Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala.
Allah says and we also took a pledge
from those who say we are Christians,
but they too forgot some of what they
were told to remember
so we stirred up enmity and hatred amongst
them until the day of resurrection when Allah
will tell them what they have done.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala in the previous verses
that we took in the last episode was
speaking about the people of the book and
predominantly from the people of the book the
Jews. And in this verse Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala now moves on to the Christians
because Allah Azzawajal took from every single nation
a covenant. Every single nation
before the people of the scripture
and after the people of the scripture in
terms of this Ummah of the prophet salallahu
alaihi wa sallam. Allah azza wa jal takes
the pledge and the covenant of worship
from his slaves and from his creation. So
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala said that we also
took a pledge from those who say that
we are Christians. So the Christians were also
given a pledge. And that is that they
would be from those people who believed in
Allah and believed in the divine
scriptures of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala. But they
broke that pledge. Allah
says,
but they too forgot some of what they
were told to remember.
They They forgot the issue of Tawhid of
Allah
So rather than worshipping Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala
and dedicating all of their servitude and submission
to him,
they began to worship other than Allah They
claimed that Allah
had a son in the form of Isa
alaihis salam. They venerated amongst them the Christians
of those who venerated
and exalted
his mother Mariam Alaihis salam above her station
also
and essentially made her into 1 of those
figures of worship besides Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
And so Allah says that they also forgot.
They also forgot the reminder that they were
given that a prophet will then emerge
towards the end of time. That is our
prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam even though Allah
tells us elsewhere in the Quran as Allah
mentions in Surat al Saf that Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala
tells us in the Quran that the prophet
gave to his people the glad tidings
of a man who would come after him,
a prophet by the name of
This messenger of Allah would come and his
name would be Ahmed. And Ahmed as we
know is 1 of the names of our
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. And so he gave
them this glad tidings. He gave them the
signs. He even gave them the name that
they need to look out for.
And that is why from amongst the people
who held on to the pure message of
Christianity,
those people who held on to the pure
message of Alisa Alaihi Salam,
they were able to recognize the prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi wasallam emerged during his time. So you
have for example the story of the famous
companion Salman al Farisi, radiAllahu an, who even
though he was on the religion of his
people, the Persians, he converts to Christianity.
And whilst he is with those Christian rabbis
and monks and scholars, he learns about the
coming of the Prophet
And they were telling him and teaching him
that he needs to look out for this
man and this is the area that he
is going to appear in and this is
the time when he is due to come
And these are the traits that he will
have and the signs of prophethood that every
prophet has. And especially the prophet salallahu alaihi
wa sallam. And that is why when Salman
al Farris
arrives in Madinah
and the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam comes to
the city, he comes and he tests him.
Because he wants to know does this man
fit the description that we had within our
scriptures.
So 1 occasion he comes and he gives
him charity
from food, charity food and he says to
him this is for you. The Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam gave it to the people around
him but he didn't eat. Because the Prophet
don't eat from charity. They don't eat from
the charity of people.
So that's 1 test.
The second time he came and he gave
him some food again. But this time he
said it's a gift for you. It's not
charity, it's a gift. So the Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam ate from it and he shared
it with those around him. That's another test
because the prophets will accept gifts, but they
won't accept charity.
And on the 3rd occasion, he wanted to
come and see the seal of prophethood
between the shoulder blades of the Prophet Sallallahu
Alaihi Wasallam. So the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
allowed him to see it and when he
saw these 3 signs from the many signs
he was given, he accepted Islam and became
as we know from the companions of the
Prophet SAW.
The point of this being that this was
something which the people of the scripture knew.
But Allah says that many of them forgot
that which they were told to remember. They
changed their scripture and omitted certain things and
ignored other parts of it and so on
and so forth.
Allah says so we stirred up enmity and
hatred amongst them until Yomul Qiyamah meaning that
they fight 1 another
and they have
their own problems amongst 1 another. And there
is constant struggles and wars and fights between
them.
And Allah will tell them on that day
meaning on Yawmul Qiyama
that which they used to do.
In verse number 15 Allah
then says,
O people of the book, our messenger has
come to make clear to you much of
what you have kept hidden of the scripture
and to overlook much you have done. A
light has now come to you from Allah
and the scripture making things clear.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala after mentioning
the covenant that he took upon the people
of the scripture, the Jews and Christians and
how they forgot much of what Allah told
them and how they broke that pledge. Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala now tells them, oh people
of the book our messenger has come to
you meaning the prophet
he has come to you to make clear
to you much of what you have kept
hidden
of the scripture
and to overlook much of what you have
done.
Allah is saying to the people of Bani
Israel, to the people of the scripture that
this messenger meaning Muhammad
has come with clarity,
has come with guidance, has come with the
light from Allah
in the form of Islam. He has come
with the message of Allah azza wa jal.
And if you accept this message
then much of that which you hidden or
much of that which you forgot or much
of that which you ignored, it will be
made clear to you again. If you want
to seek the path to Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala, you want to find the path towards
salvation and eternal happiness, then follow the path
of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam because as
we have mentioned before
Allah took this covenant upon each and every
single prophet and messenger. That if during their
time the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was
to emerge then they were to go and
to support him. They were to help him
and to aid him sallallahu alaihi wa sallam.
So therefore when the prophet sallallahu alaihi wa
sallam came at the end of time and
he said that my message is for all
of mankind, not only for the Quraysh or
only for the Arabs, it's not just specific
to them, it is all for all of
humankind
than every single 1 of those previous nations
or every single 1 of the people across
the world. Their duty is then to believe
in the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
and that is what they were told in
the scriptures. And that is what they were
prophesied
for them by their prophets and messengers for
Allah
and that is that if they go and
they believe in Allah and they believe in
the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam and they take
iman and they follow the haram and they
stay away from Haram, then Allah will forgive
them for all of their sins and their
transgressions.
And you will overlook much of what you
have done Not only much of what you
have done in terms of the sins
but Allah
amended some of the laws of
the Injeel made things easy
for the Ummah of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi
wa sallam. And so much of what we
do in terms of our Ibadah, in terms
of what Allah made halal or haram in
terms of what we can do or can't
do, the commandments and the prohibitions. Allah
made it easier for us than for those
people who came before us. And that is
why we have a greater reward. The ummah
of the prophet
as a greater virtue and a greater reward
and a greater station and that is seen
for example in a number of narrations from
them is that the prophet salallahu alaihi wa
sallam told us that even though we were
the last of the nations to come upon
earth, we will be the 1st to enter
into Jannah, by Allah's permission. And so once
the prophets have entered into Jannah, the 1st
Ummah to enter into Jannah for more of
the nations,
even though with the last chronologically to come
upon earth.
So the people of Nuh and Ibrahim and
Hud and and the believers of those of
those nations and Musa and Harissa all of
them came before us. We are the last
of the nations to appear upon earth but
by Allah's
mercy and permission, the Ummah of the Prophet
will be the first to enter into Jannah.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala then concludes this verse
by saying
a light has now come to you from
Allah and a scripture making things clear. Allah
is saying that he has given to us
what we need in order to know our
religion, to have guidance from Allah Subhanahu Wa
Ta'ala. And that is a very important point
To know that what Allah
has contained within the Quran
is guidance
and it is a light from him.
And that is why the scholars have often
said that every single issue that you need
in terms of happiness, in terms of salvation,
in terms of being successful in this life
and the next, you will find it in
the book of Allah
If you don't understand the Quran that's a
different issue. If your connection with the Quran
is weak that's a different issue. If you
don't study the Quran or contemplate the book
of Allah
that's a different issue. But the Quran in
and of itself is noor. And
it is a cure. As Ibn Qayim said
when he gave a very good example. He
said the Quran is a light and a
cure. But just like every medication,
it also depends on the dosage. It depends
on how and when you administer it. So
if you were just to go to the
doctor and get some medication and you rarely
take it, or you take it in the
way that wasn't prescribed, or you take it
in the way that wasn't prescribed, you're doing
something in the opposite way that you should
do it, then that medication will only have
a limited effect.
The problem isn't with the medication. The medication
works. It's been proven to work. The problem
is me and you because we don't take
the Quran in the way that it should
be taken. So the Quran is the cure
of Allah
gives a cure to the hearts from the
diseases of the heart. And there is a
cure for the bodies as Allah mentioned and
as is mentioned in the sun of the
prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. But the problem is
that we don't read the Quran the way
that it should be read. We don't understand
the Quran the way that it should be
understood. We don't study the Quran the way
that it should be studied. We don't contemplate
upon the Quran the way that it should
be contemplated and we don't act upon the
Quran the way that it should be implemented
and acted upon. And so our connection with
the Quran because of its weakness and its
distance,
then means that the effect of it is
also going to be weak and distance and
you can take that principle and apply it
to everything in Islam. Allah gives to us
virtues concerning Salah, that it prevents you from
sin and from certain evils and so on,
and then we pray but we find ourselves
sinning and falling into those same major sins
and issues. The problem isn't with the Salah
because Allah is truthful and if Allah says
that it prevents from sin, it prevents from
sin. The problem is in me and you
and in the way that we are praying
and the manner in which we are praying
and the mindset that we come to the
prayer with. This is a deficiency upon our
part. And so therefore we
need to strive and be better when it
comes to our connection with the book of
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala because all of the
book of Allah is Noor. It is all
light and all guidance and all goodness and
all blessing. But for us to benefit from
that to the maximum,
to the maximum level, that's something which we
need to work upon in terms of our
own
Iman and our own worship of Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala.
Allah
mentions in verse 16
Allah mentions in verse 16,
it is a light and a clear book
and a clear scripture.
With which Allah guides to the ways of
peace those who follow what pleases him,
bringing them from darkness out into light by
his will and guiding them to the straight
path.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
says that the Quran in the previous verse
he said that the Quran is a light
from Allah and a scripture that makes things
clear and then in verse 16 he says,
with which Allah guides the ways of peace.
Allah Azzawajal uses the Quran as a guidance.
It is a guide for the believers.
So for those people who follow the guidance
of the Quran, it will guide them to
the ways of peace. The ways of peace
are all of the ways of goodness and
all of the ways that upon which is
the pleasure of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
The ways of peace is everything that Allah
is pleased with. So everything which is good
in terms of your belief,
in terms of your worship of Allah azza
wa Jal your Ibadah, in terms of your
character and your dealings and the way that
you interact with people in terms
of your dunya
and the way you live upon this life.
The Quran speaks about it. It gives you
guidance concerning it. It gives you either in
general terms or in specific terms
laws concerning it and guidelines concerning it. So
for example in the previous Surah that we
made the Tafsir of, Surah Al
Nisa, we had detailed rulings concerning divorce,
detailed rulings concerning aspects of marriage, detailed rulings
concerning inheritance.
Those are laws that Allah gives to you
because in it there is light and guidance.
And if you follow that, then you're following
in that issue
the path of peace, the ways of peace.
Because within that there is goodness for you,
goodness for the other people involved and goodness
for the whole community and the whole Ummah
of the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam. And so
Allah
wants us to follow those ways of peace.
How do you know what is the way
of peace, the way of goodness, the way
of success and salvation?
The Quran tells you.
Read the Quran, study the Quran,
take time
from your life and daily schedule and dedicate
it to the book of Allah Subhanahu wa
Ta'ala. And the more that you dedicate to
the Quran, the more that you will take
from it. The more that you dedicate and
sacrifice for the sake of Allah in studying
and reading the Quran,
the more that Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala will
bless your efforts
and sincerity. And Allah will open up for
you the knowledge of the book of Allah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala. And that is why some
of the scholars used to say after spending
decades
servicing Islam, teaching and studying, they used to
say if we had 1 regret, it is
that we didn't give even more time to
the Quran. And their whole life was dedicated
to the Quran. Their whole life is the
book of Allah Subhanhu wa Ta'ala. But that's
still a regret that they had after 50,
60, 70 years. Why? Because the Quran you
can never finish studying it. Even if you
read it once or twice and you have
done tafsir once or twice or you studied
it multiple times, it's not enough. You need
to go back and read it again and
again and again. And if you read the
the the the the statements of 1 scholar,
go
or the second 1 and the third 1.
Each 1 has something that they can give
to you. And the Quran has so many
different facets and angles that you can study
it from, whether it be from the issues
of Fiqh or the Arabic
language or the Qiraat of the Quran or
the Quran, the Quran, the Quran, the Quran,
the Quran, the Quran, the Quran, the Quran,
the Quran, the Quran, the Quran, the Quran,
the Quran, the Quran, the Quran, the Quran,
the
and the ways of peace
that lead to the abode of peace. And
is from the names of Jannah. The names
of paradise is that it is the abode
of peace in which there is no hatred,
no enmity, no war, no fighting, no bickering,
no arguing, no animosity,
no ill feelings, no jealousy,
no envy, all of that is taken out
from the people of Jannah.
In Jannah, there is only purity and goodness
and so it is called Dawus Salam, it
is the abode
of peace,
the abode of goodness and so to follow
the ways of goodness that Allah is mentioning
here, the ways of peace and goodness, Allah
will take you to the abode of peace
and goodness.
Allah says that this Quran will take you
out from darkness
into light by his will.
Allah will extract
you from the depths of darkness,
the darkness of the darkness of the darkness
of the darkness of the darkness of innovation
and the darkness of not knowing your purpose
in this life, not knowing what is pleasing
to Allah azza wa Jal, not knowing who
is your Lord and creator and the purpose
for which he created you. Subhanahu wa ta'ala
And so Allah says that he will extract
you from that darkness
and bring you into the light. The light
of Iman and the light of tawhid
and the light of knowing what is pleasing
to Allah
and the light of Islam and knowing the
Prophet
in the Quran. And so
once you
were
in the depths of darkness,
in which your heart felt no peace,
no contentment,
no joy or happiness. There was the emptiness
within you that you couldn't fill. There was
a gap that you couldn't that you couldn't
fill because the only thing that I can
fill that gap is iman, is the Quran.
It is your belief in Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala. And once you taste the sweetness of
iman through the Quran and through Iman, you
taste the sweetness of this Quran, then you
understand the greatest blessing of Allah subhanahu wa
jal upon any 1 of his creation
And that is that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
allows them to see that light allows them
to benefit from that light. Because there are
many people who come across the Quran, many
people who have heard of the Quran, but
most of them or many of them don't
believe in the Quran. And then there are
many who believe in the Quran because they're
Muslims, but their attachment to it is so
weak and distant that they take very little
benefit from the Quran.
So if you are from amongst those people
that Allah has blessed that you're watching this
tafsir for example, you're reading the Quran, you're
trying, you're studying, you're doing your utmost, your
best, that is from the greatest blessings of
Allah upon you and 1 that you should
thank him for on a daily basis. Every
single day you should thank Allah
and ask him for an increase in it.
And you feel from 1 of those people
that you are distant from the Quran, that
your connection or attachment to the Quran is
very weak, is very little, then now is
the time to start. Now is the time
to change your ways and to amend them
and to start from a new. Start fresh
with the book of Allah Subhanu wa Ta'ala
and do it in a measurable way, easy,
consistent way. Take 5, 10 minutes of your
day, read even if it's just a verse
of the Quran, but stop and read his
tafsir and study it and ponder over it.
That's all it takes. 5 to 10 minutes.
Read this translation,
read a brief tafsir,
and then you move on to the second
1 and the third 1 and the fourth
1. And if you did that every single
day of the year and you did some
300 plus verses, even with taking days out,
you did 300 verses a year. Imagine if
you had started this 5, 10 years ago.
Like most of us now, we could have
started this 5, 10, 15 years ago. By
now, we would have more or less finished
the Quran.
But again, it is Shaitan that comes and
makes us procrastinate and delay.
And the Quran guides them to the straight
path that is pleasing and beloved to Allah
Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. Allah Azzawaj then says in
verse 17 which is the final verse on
this page.
Allah
says
those who say that Allah is the Messiah,
the son of Mary are defying the truth.
Say if
it had been Allah's will, could anyone have
prevented him from destroying the Messiah, the son
of Mary, together with his mother and everyone
else on earth? Control of the heavens and
earth and all that is between them belongs
to Allah. He creates whatever He wills, and
Allah has power over everything.
Allah
will now speak in this verse and in
a number of verses
concerning the belief of the Christians
with regards to the Messenger of Allah Isa
Alaihi Salat wa Salam and his mother Maryam
Alaihi salam And that is that as we
know we made them gods, they made them
gods besides Allah 'azawajal.
They gave to them powers of divinity
and they claimed for example that 'Isa salam
was the son of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
So Allah
says that as for those who say that
Allah is the son of Mary because they
say that God is the father, the son,
the holy spirit. They say that Risa
was God upon earth in the form of
the son. He is God upon earth. And
so Allah is
recounting their claim here. He is saying that
they claim
that Allah is the Messiah son of Mary.
Those people are defying the truth. They are
disbelievers.
Laqad kafar they have disbelieved in Allah azza
wa Jal because they have gone against the
principle of Tawhid
and that is that Allah azza wa Jal
alone is worthy of worship. So when they
gave to a human,
1 of the creations of Allah, even though
he is 1 of the greatest of Allah's
creations because he is the messenger of Allah.
But once they gave him more than what
Allah attributed to him, they placed him upon
a station and a pedestal over and above
what Allah had given to him, then those
people had essentially made shirk with Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala say to show that Mirissa
and his mother and no 1 else has
power besides Allah
say who would save them?
Risa,
his mom, his mother, and everyone on earth
if Allah decided to destroy them. Who could
prevent this?
No 1 would come and stand before Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala and that shows therefore that
if Isa alayhis salam and his mother Maniam
are not able to stop the the or
withstand the destruction that Allah azza wa Jal
had his will could decree,
they wouldn't be able to stop themselves from
the punishment of Allah azza wa Jal, they
wouldn't be able to withstand the decree of
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, then they cannot be
gods besides Allah because they are inherently weak
If they cannot stop the punishment,
death,
harm,
they are then weak. And if they are
weak, they cannot be gods besides Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala. Because our God is all powerful.
Our
God is all ever living. Our God is
1 that no 1 can overcome and no
1 can overpower.
And that is why Allah concludes
this verse by saying,
and indeed everything, control of the heavens, dominion
of the heavens and the earth and all
that is in between them belongs to Allah
alone.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the 1 who
controls everything alone Subhanu wa Ta'ala.
And Allah gives to whomsoever he wills from
his creation a status he wishes to afford
to them. But that doesn't mean that they
have the power of being the divine. It
doesn't mean that they are equals to Allah
azza wa Jal or partners with him that
deserve to be worshipped alongside him? Rather Allah
Azza wa Jal alone is the 1 who
controls the heavens and earth and everything in
between,
and he creates whatever he wills. So the
creation of Isa Alaihi Salam which was without
a father, just from a mother, That's from
the signs of Allah, from the power of
Allah azza wa jal. We don't take that
to say that therefore Allah is his father
because there was no other father.
Or that Adam alayhis salaam had neither mother
nor father. Therefore Allah is is his father
or something. That's not what it means. It
means that Allah can do as he wills
with his creation. And so he can create
as he will subhanahu wa ta'ala for indeed
Allah has power over all things. And with
that, we come to the conclusion of today's
episode.
