As-Salaatu Wa As-Salaamu Ala Ashrafil Anbiya
Wa Al-Mursaleen Sayyidina Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam
Wa Ala Alihi Wa Sahbihi Mubarak Wasallam Respected
Shuyukh, my beloved brothers and sisters and children,
As-Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Ta'ala Wa
Barakatuh InshaAllah we have a few very quick
announcements.
First of all, as you know, the one
year anniversary, October 7th, is approaching.
And there are a number of events that
are happening across the city and across the
world.
Because over the past year we have seen
an incredible escalation of violence, of killing, of
genocide, in Palestine, in Lebanon, and in other
places.
So there are a number of events that
are happening.
A few of them to name.
One, there is a major protest downtown, Toronto,
tomorrow.
And there is a bus going from IIT
here.
We have a few spaces left.
And registration is required.
So if you would like to go with
the bus downtown, we're leaving at 12.30
p.m. And bring Salaatu Zuhar downtown.
Please register in the lobby.
Sister Afra will be there.
So register in the lobby if you want
to go with the bus.
Secondly, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., we
have a special workshop with a Toronto Star
editor, Scott Colby.
And it's dealing with how to write an
opinion piece to be published in the newspapers.
It's important that we learn how to tell
our story, how to tell our narratives.
And Scott Colby is a Toronto Star opinion
editor.
And the program will be moderated by our
brother Faisal Kuti.
The registration is almost full.
We have a few spaces only.
And we will close the registration this evening
at around 5 o'clock or so.
So if you would like to register for
this program for tomorrow morning, we're starting with
breakfast at 9.30 a.m. and finishing
at noon.
Please register.
You can get the registration link at Islam
.ca. And also important, tomorrow evening also will
be our first Islamic History Month event.
As you know, October is Islamic History Month.
And we started an incredible program many years
ago with Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick.
Every Saturday in October, we have an Islamic
History Month event.
Tomorrow's event, the theme is Palestine.
We cannot but use that theme for tomorrow.
So come on out at 6 p.m.
We have some displays.
We have a lecture by Imam Ayman Tahir,
who is himself Palestinian.
Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick will also address us.
And we have a panel discussion with Brother
Farid Amin.
Tomorrow evening at 6 p.m., please come
on out.
Bring your family.
We have some light snacks afterwards.
Jazakumullah Khair.
We also are continuing with our programs at
Islamic Institute of Toronto, courses, children's programs, Friday
night evening programs, and some recreation programs.
So check our website.
And may Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala help
you and all of us to be on
this journey of learning.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Please let the brothers and sisters go through
the lines.
Please donate generously.
As you know, we have a number of
things to do here at IIT, including maintenance.
And your donations on Fridays, alhamdulillah, they add
up to quite a lot over the year.
And really important and critical for us to
use that to ensure that we maintain the
building and we maintain the programs that we
run.
So jazakumullah khair.
Please give generously.
Our khateeb today is Sheikh Ahmed Kuti.
The schedule has been changed a little bit.
So we welcome him for the first Jummah
of the month, inshallah.
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah Akbar, Allah

subhanahu wa ta'ala yaqul wa taquni ya
ulil albab la'allakum tuflihoon First of all,
our praises to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
who hears the whisperings of the hearts and
the sounds low and high and knows all
that is hidden in the innermost recesses of
the hearts He knows, as He described Himself
ya'lamu kha'inata al-la'yun wa
ma tufis-sudur He knows the treachery of
our eyes and that which is hidden in
our hearts So our praises to Him Let
the Lord be praised as He has chosen
to praise Himself I testify there is none
worthy of worship but Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala I also testify that Muhammad, son of
Abdullah is the servant and chosen messenger of
Allah He is the beloved of Allah He
is the mercy of the worlds May Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala continue to shower His
blessings and peace on him and his family
and all those who strive hard to walk
in their footsteps And I pray to Allah
subhanahu wa ta'ala Allahumma rizquna hubbak wa
hubba rasulik wa hubba man yuhibbuk wal hubba
allathee yukarribuna ila hubbik Ya Allah, honour us
inspire in our hearts the love for You
the love for Your messenger the love for
those who love You and to love actions
and manners and words that will bring us
closer to Your love Before I begin my
khutbah today it is, let me remind our
Sheikh Abdul Hamid already mentioned it but still
I have been told that there are many
while the khutbah is going on they are
talking being distracted by doing all sorts of
things and they are not listening to the
khutbah wa dhakkir fa inna al-dhikra tamfa
'u mumineen and remind them for reminder may
help the believers who cherish faith in their
hearts You know in the olden days I
come from a village before the imam goes
on the mimbar there is an announcement made
in Arabic although he doesn't know the announcement
the meaning of the announcement he is making
nor the people who don't know Arabic know
the meaning of what he is saying so
one day I stood up to translate that
to the congregation and you know what the
announcement brothers and sisters the imam is going
to climb the mimbar now now you must
observe silence and you must listen to the
khutbah attentively if you fail to do that
no juma is valid and he says al
-juma taqoobu maqam al-raka'atayni min al
-fard al-khutbah the khutbah is in place
of the two rakah that has been reduced
from the salah so don't distract yourself maybe
what we say is not palatable to you
but if you have faith you should listen
to the call of Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala who described the believers alladhina yastabi'un
al-qawla fa yattabi'un al-ahsana then
listen to the advice and follow the best
of it before I proceed I pray to
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to bring relief
and honour and dignity to our brothers and
sisters in Palestine, in Gaza, in Lebanon and
all over the world where there is persecution
there is genocide may Allah subhanahu wa ta
'ala grant them victory may Allah subhanahu wa
ta'ala bring down defeat the oppressors and
enemies of Islam you know one of the
issues that is always on the social forums
is the role of women in society and
some of them go to the extreme position
that the woman's place at home in her
most room the secret, the hidden room of
her house and she should only step out
of the house on two occasions when she
is married she goes to her husband's house
and when she dies she goes to the
grave and she if she has the means
there is a third option she is allowed
to go for hajj provided she has a
mahram now I want to deal with this
issue by taking you back to the era
of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam laqad
kana lakum fi rasulillahi uswatun hasana you have
indeed a great exemplar in Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam li man kana yarjul Allah wal
yawm al akhir for those of you who
look forward to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
and the last day wa dhakkarallaha kathira and
those of you who want to establish consistency
in remembrance of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is our mentor
he is the mentor of the mentors he
trained leaders of men and women and I
want to take you to the story, wonderful
story of Khawla bint Saliba bint Saliba Khawla
the daughter of Saliba one of the eminent
companions companions of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
her husband was also a very prominent companion
of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and you
know the praise I read is the praise
of Aisha radiallahu anha when she narrated the
story of Khawla radiallahu anha radiallahu anhuma she
said subhan glory be to him who hears
the whisperings of the hearts and what is
hidden in the secrets of the hearts and
hears all the sounds low and high she
praised Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and glorified
and described the story of what happened in
the house of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam,
in her apartment this is a reference to
the surah Al-Mujadila the very title of
the surah is the woman who disputed with
Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and yet there
are ulama who say sautul mar'ati awrah
the voice of woman is awrah she should
not speak she should not speak in public
at all she cannot greet and how often
we pass by women, we say assalamu alaykum
they don't return because the wrong understanding they
have is men are not supposed to greet
women women are not supposed to greet men
as-saghfirullah al-lazeem our mentor is Rasulullah
sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and he is trained
was-sabiquna al-awwaluna min al-muhajireena wal
-ansar and the pioneers from among the immigrants
and ansar wal-lazeena attaba'uhum and those
who emulate their examples Allah is well placed
with them and those who follow their examples
and let us be among them insha'Allah
so coming to the story of surah al
-mujadila the very surah will dispel that myth
that women cannot dispute, cannot argue in public
because it happened here and it happened many
many times during the time of Rasulullah and
the companions of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
I said, Allah said, of course Khawla alayhi
wa sallam said by Allah my soul is
in his hands the surah, the ayah Allah
has heard her the woman who was disputing
with you in regard to her husband and
Allah was hearing your conversation your dialogue your
debate, your discussion because they continue to debate
and discuss that this revelation came down in
my story referring to my story Khawla is
reporting she said what happened her husband is
an old man like me so they got
into an argument husband and wife very bitter
argument, back and forth finally the man could
not control because she said this he has
become old and irritable now getting old and
becoming irritable and then in the course of
argument he said from now on you are
like my mom for me he said this
and he left to attend the assembly of
the tribe he sat there and after a
few after some time he came back and
now he wants intimacy with her she said
no you cannot have intimacy with me because
you said I am like your mom so
I don't think it is halal for us
to have intimacy but he struggled with her
tried to mount her she said I was
stronger I put him aside make him fall
and I went to my neighbor's house, gathered
some nice clothes and went straight to Rasulullah
because this woman is now if she want
to know whether it is halal for him
for both of them to have intimacy after
he has said those words look at her
consciousness of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala she
said you can never touch me until I
get the fatwa from Rasulullah ruling whether we
are allowed to have intimacy she rushes to
go to Rasulullah and Aisha sitting in another
corner of the house and she is whispering
to Rasulullah and Aisha said I cannot make
out the words she spoke to Rasulullah but
Rasulullah heard the story and complained to Rasulullah
subhanahu wa ta'ala I have spent all
my youth with him and I have little
children now and this is what he did
so of course she wanted to get back
but she want to know whether it is
halal or not Rasulullah subhanahu wa ta'ala
told her I don't think you are lawful
for one another she insisted again she cried
insisted again Rasulullah said I don't think you
are lawful for one another another time and
then she turned she turned her face towards
the Kaaba and cried out to Allah subhanahu
wa ta'ala ya Allah bring relief in
my case, ya Allah you hear the grieving
if I leave him leave my children with
him he will be neglected he won't be
able to mentor them he will not be
able to take care of them but if
the children are left with me they would
starve, I would starve and then suddenly she
said Rasulullah subhanahu wa ta'ala was gripped
when Rasulullah subhanahu wa ta'ala was receiving
revelation it's a as Imam Ibn Khaldun said
revelation is this the communication between the higher
and the lower world and the body cannot
bear this so so much pressure on the
body it goes into a convulsion kind of
state so it happened to and then suddenly
the relief came and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi
wa sallam said Allah has revealed and he
recited the Surah verse from Surah Al-Mujadila
Allah has heard the complained the woman who
disputed with you in regard to her husband
complaining about him and Allah is hearing the
conversation and the dialogue and of course then
Allah said Allah is forgiving and merciful but
then goes on to say, Allah says that
whoever divorces their wife in this way let
them know your wives can never be your
mothers your mothers are those who bore you
and delivered you and not your wives this
is a very detestable and sinful statement that
you have made, whoever makes that but Allah
is all forgiving and all merciful because you
have violated the hududullah you have to give
a penalty and the penalty is to free
a slave if you cannot then fast 60
days 2 months if you cannot do that
60 poor people should be fed so Rasulullah
ﷺ recited these verses to her and told
her to go to her husband and say,
let him free a slave Khawla said my
husband cannot afford to do that then let
him fast 2 months he is too old
to fast then let him feed 60 poor
people she said he cannot afford that he
doesn't have the means then the Prophet said
I will volunteer to give him one bushel
of course this is total of 180 kilograms
of dates have to be given in charity
but the Prophet said I will give half
and then she said I will give half
of course then it will be given to
the poor now this is Khawla she was
trained by Rasulullah ﷺ to speak up believers,
males and females are guardians and protectors of
one another so this guardianship that responsibility falls
on both males and females and because of
that both of them should stand up and
command good and forbid evil so woman has
a duty to command good and forbid evil
not just man so how can somebody say
woman's place is at home she should not
speak up she should not argue, she should
not dispute, of course this thing was completely
reversed even from the beginning of Rasulullah's arrival
in Medina we have a wonderful story of
Umar bin Khattab after he immigrated to Medina
suddenly he saw his wife arguing with him
debating with him talking back so Umar bin
Khattab was how come, what changed in Mecca
you were not doing that she said are
you better than Rasulullah ﷺ so he asked
Rasulullah's wife argue with him said yes go
and ask his wife of course I don't
want to go to the story of course
Umm Salama says don't interfere in our business
you should it's none of your business so
he understood from her that of course Rasulullah
ﷺ taught that just as man has a
mind and voice and express freely the ability
and responsibility to express freely women have the
same right that is why Khawla ﷺ stood
up when Umar ﷺ became caliph he was
making a new proposal he wanted to change
the exorbitant mahr that the ladies were demanding
from their husbands he wanted to put a
cap on it he made that announcement then
Khawla stands up imagine a woman standing up
to the khatib of course this is not
even khatib it's caliph Umar ﷺ Umar you
have no right to do that when Allah
has said even if you were to give
them a mountain of gold you cannot take
it back from them she stood up and
corrected him and Umar said woman is right
and Umar is wrong and one day Umar
ﷺ was going through the streets of Medina
he saw Khawla and greeted with assalamu alaikum
are you better than Umar?
are you better than Khawla?
when you say you cannot greet woman a
woman cannot greet man Khawla returned the salam
and stopped him said ya Umar you were
little Umar in Mecca tending camels and sheep
for pittance then you became Umar and now
you have become Amirul Muminin so I admonish
you, advise you to fear Allah because you
are going to meet him I admonish you
to fear that the day of standing before
Allah ﷻ she continued to advise and Al
-Jaru the assistant of Umar bin Khattab enough,
enough, enough you made him stand and listen
to you so long, stop it Umar ﷺ
said shut up be quiet, you know who
is that?
this is Khawla Allah heard her complain from
above the seven heavens, so Umar should be
listening to her by Allah if she were
to stop me from morning till evening I
will stop and listen to her except for
further prayers yes, because if Allah has heard
her Umar is more worthy of hearing her
brothers and sisters let us dispel this myth
and false distorting the image of Islam when
we say that women role in the home
they have a role to perform in society
like active supporters and allies may Allah ﷻ
help us to come back to the real
Islam and leave and abandon the current practices
that have crept into the body politic of
Islam surah
surah surah surah surah surah
surah surah surah surah surah surah surah surah
