The grantor of pardon
Today is 26th day of Ramadan and tonight
the night that we are heading into is
the 27th night of Ramadan.
And
it would not be appropriate for me to
talk about any other name aside from Isma'ullah
Subhanahu Wa Ta'alaam.
We are now at the we have now
covered,
at least with today, inshallah, one name from
each of the 12 categories,
of of of
Allah's glorious names.
And we chose from each category
1, sometimes 2 names if you had time.
Yesterday, we talked about attributes or names of
tenderness and compassion. We covered
Isbullah al Shirkur,
Isbullah al Wadud.
And I had skipped
the category of, granting
self renewal
because I wanted to be able to do
it today
and el afu, a grantor of pardon. And
this will be the final name that I'll
talk about this month. Monday, I will
will be the final episode of the series,
and I'll do a bit of a summary
of what we've talked about and why it's
important to study, his name and
and what the what the benefit of studying
his name
actually is.
And then Tuesday morning, which will be the
final day of Ramadan and final Friday will
be a, an end of month summary
with some plans for the future.
This
is, maybe just move it to just go
to Afu for me because it's just keep
on going.
Okay.
It's in the Quran 5 times.
Yeah.
Before we talk about the name, what does
the word mean?
Pardon.
In Arabic, they say
that the winds came and and it erased
it erased
the the residue or or whatever,
traces
there were left.
The Quran
says,
yes. Ask you, what do we what do
we give in terms of nafakah?
The answer is lafu. Lafu is whatever you
have extra.
Whatever is you have more than what you
need.
In that sense, the concept of
is that you go from a negative
to a high positive.
Right? You go
there's going from the negative to a neutral,
going from a a negative to a moderate
positive, or going from a negative to a
high positive.
That's what Afu is.
So when you define his name,
the grantor of pardon, he is the one
who forgives
his servant's sins,
removes those sins,
remove
the consequences
or residue of that sin,
and then he is satisfied with his servant,
and then he gives him reward.
So this is the definition of his name,
Al Afu.
There's a difference between almaghfirah
al Afu, between forgiveness
and Afu. Forgiveness
comes from and this would be a name
that yeah. Yeah. I was planning to talk
about it, but I don't I don't think
we'll be able to do it.
Comes from the concept of setso, something to
be covered.
Is when something is going to be covered
or,
looked away from, shied away from.
So on the day of judgment when your
book is open,
there will be sins that
are in the book,
but they're stamped with forgiveness. They are, you
know, they're covered.
They'll be talked about. You'll have to read
the actual wording within the book.
And when you read it, Allah
will say,
I I concealed that sin for you in
dunya, and today I'm forgiving the sin for
you. But
is actually one degree higher than that.
Means the sin isn't in the book anymore.
Means that the sin does not exist in
the book anymore. It's not written there.
And this is how I imagine the concept
of. It's how I imagine it.
I imagine that you
have a sin and you come
and you're worried about it
and you remember exactly when it happened and
you remember all of the details. So you
know exact date. So once you receive your
book, you start you open the book and
start going through the pages
looking for the date of that sin. You
find the date. You start scrolling down to
see where where it was, and then the
timing that happened, you don't you don't see
it.
So you're a bit concerned that it's not
fair because you're not sure what that means.
It's not written there. So you call upon
one of the medic and ask, like, where
where is the
I I did something.
4 o'clock. It's not there's a missing it's
not there.
So the the medic will scold you and
tell you to go mind your business that
no one forgets anything here.
So you start looking for the one who
was responsible for writing this stuff. You know,
the person the medic that was personally assigned
for it. So you find him. You ask
him, what about this sin? What about that
one? The one that you remember?
There's only you there. Remember I where was
it? The medic medic says, no.
Is it there? No. I don't remember that.
I don't remember you doing it, and I
I didn't forget anything. It's it's whatever is
written.
So now you go and you look for
the person who was harmed by it, and
you speak to them. You say, yeah, Fulan,
did you end up forgiving me for for
this, Yani, for for that day?
And and the person looks at you and
says, I I don't even what are you
talking about?
So after a while, you start wondering if
you're sane or not because you you recall
very clearly the date. Maybe you start thinking
that maybe the date is wrong, that by
some
odd of an error. You just you figured
you you you misplaced
the date, so you start looking elsewhere. You
can't find it,
and just not there. No one no one
seems to remember that it happened. And then
you meet Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala and you
and you're going through the
you're going through your hisab. At some point,
you stop and you say, what about this
one? What about that deed? What about that
mistake?
I
pardon you for that.
I pardon you for that, and it's no
longer in your book.
And the melek that wrote it forgot about
it. And the person was that was harmed
about it forgot about it. And the only
2 that are left that know about it
is you and me. And by the time
we're done with this, you will forget about
it too.
And it was not as if it didn't
happen.
It didn't happen.
That's.
That's why the prophet alayhi wasalam he was
asked, what do I say?
When Aisha asked him, what do I say
if I if I feel it's like
Oh, Allah, you are the granter of pardon.
You love to grant pardon, so grant part
granting me a pardon tonight.
That's that's the value of his name with
Afu.
Malakkal is good. Forgiveness is amazing. But Afu
is just one degree
is just one degree higher.
Send the Quran 5 times his name in
Afu, and it's with two names, with and
with
Is with Il Ghafoor, not in the sense
of forgiveness, but in the sense of sator.
It comes with that name because it doesn't
need to come with the name that has
forgiveness because pardon is one degree higher. So
it comes with his name in
the sense that it's concealed, it's settled.
So he pardons you and he conceals the
sin. The sin is going to be sealed
it's not going to be exposed to other
people. It'll be concealed and then it'll be
pardoned altogether. It comes with the name of
Al Khadir
because Al Afu end what? In Arabic, Al
Afu end Al Makhidira. Right? Al Afu,
for it to happen, you have to have
ability. Like, you have to be capable of
taking back what is yours. We have to
be in a position where you have the
upper hand. In order in order for for
output to be acceptable, for it to be
meaningful, you have to have the upper hand.
For you to pardon someone, when you don't
have the ability to take back that which
was taken from you, you don't have the
ability to, yeah, restore your rights that was,
that you're oppressed with, then it's not really
it's not really meaningful. Has to happen with
And he uses and he says
because
when you think about this, you almost think
it sounds for a moment that's not even
possible.
Like, when you think about what I just
explained to you, almost seems like impossible for
that to be the case. But he is
Qadeer. He is all capable
So he is he is omnipotent and he
is capable of doing this, and he will
make sure that he grants you pardon. This
night that we're coming towards, this 27th night,
the only thing that I associated with my
the scholars that I I I live with
associate it with they associate it with They
associate it with the concept of of pardoning.
Whether it's or it's not, it's for forever
and ever, the 27th night of Ramadan has
always been associated with the concept of Afu.
So now that you're entering this night,
we're we're moving towards it, take some time
and think about this concept.
If you ask me about my my sins,
I will ask you about your pardon.
And if you ask me about my shortcomings,
I will ask you for your
is when you fill in gaps.
The fill filling in the gaps.
This concept that they had, this this understanding
they had of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, it
didn't encourage them to be
less committed
or less close to Allah
It just put in their hearts a certain
degree of affinity,
a certain degree of love and hope in
what he can offer them
based on their understanding of the status.
It wasn't based on a,
whims or desires or
delusional
delusional thinking. No. It was based on understanding.
You see, some people will do that. They'll
they'll have hope and forgiveness, but it's it's
a delusion. It's not it's just based on
the fact that they don't feel that what
they're doing is problematic.
And they don't feel that their mistakes and
their shortcomings and their sins are worthy of
punishment.
But and there are others who have the
same degree of hope in his forgiveness, but
it's not because of that. It's because they
understand the status of Al Afu
They understand who Allah is
and what he can offer.
And and and even though it's the same
degree of hope and his forgiveness and pardon,
it's just it comes from 2 different places
and, thus, the outcome is going to be
different.
One is based on the fact you don't
feel that it's really a big deal what
you did versus you know that Allah is
And if he asks me about my sin,
I'll ask him about his pardoning
because he is the he is the granter
of pardon, Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala.
The,
the Wazim, one of the
We found written
on the,
on the handle of the prophet
blessed sword.
There's 3 other narrations with different,
variations, but this first one was the same
in all 3.
Pardon that who one who has mistreated you.
This is what he lived by
It was written on his sword. The sword
that he used to bring back Haqq on
it was
pardon the one. See, the the it's not
a conundrum. It's actually very,
very, very, meaningful.
That sword that was used to defend righteousness
and to retrieve that were taken away,
it was done with the with the premise
of
that you will pardon the one who mistreated
you once you're capable of doing so unless
you have that ability. The concept of
is
is to remove
the sin completely.
And then put in his satisfaction and and
then offer you and offer you a reward
as well.
The only way we can understand for.
The one who will take a
and turn it into a hasana. Well, how
does that even work? Because he is going
to pardon it, and it's gonna go from
a negative to a high positive. It's going
to go from a sin
not to no sin. It's going to go
to a hasala instead of it. That's his
that's his he's
is the ultimate,
gift
of of pardon
for those who are
bashful.
For those who feel ashamed of their sin,
they look at their as a gift.
And so here, here's a night where we
can offer you something that you is hard
for you to
to hope for or to fathom outside of
this time of the year, which is which
is.
You'll find in the Quran that the concept
of comes with the big sins, like with
the big stuff.
When we told Musa, we we had a
timing with Musa for 14 days and 40
nights. And within that short period of time,
you went
from Dohaib to worshiping a kaf
or worshiping him al sunam.
Imagine the audacity that Ajib
Ajib, they just saw the the the sea
parted.
They just watched
and drowned.
He brought them 9 separate,
miracles,
alayhi salam, Sayed the Musa alayhi salam.
And yet 40 days he leaves. He comes
back. They're they're worshiping a golden calf.
Then we pardoned you. After that, maybe you'll
show gratitude.
When when Musa'aear came to the to say
the most,
And they came to the Musa and said,
We wanna see Allah with their eyes. We're
not gonna we don't believe anymore until we
see with our eyes. So Allah,
yeah, and he had them all die and
then resurrected them, and then he pardoned them.
The day of
twice
and so it's Aliyah run twice.
The first one,
He said on the day of Uhud, when
I granted you the upper hand and you
were you were basically
winning the war, it was it was swift
and it was quick.
And then after a few after that happened,
some of you, their hearts was filled with
duniya, and you guys missed disagreed on things.
And some of you ran down the mountain
to take the bounty.
Some of you wanted duniya during this war.
Some of you wanted
and he has pardoned you.
And they've all had some people ran.
They all ran in the wrong direction. They
they got scared. They became so chaotic that
they that they that they ran.
Indeed, the ones who shaitan was able to
get to them and had them turn around
and run on the day of war,
indeed Allah
has forgiven them. He had has pardoned them.
With the big stuff.
When
you
read
Don't pray when you're drunk.
At the end of the ayahu
And Allah
is the one who will pardon you. You're
praying when you're drunk. When a when the
ayahu talk about
when a man goes and he he says
to his wife,
you are to me like my mother is
so that she can't be divorced and she
can't be
treated as a wife. It was a form
of oppression that men in Jahili would
perform upon their wives.
And indeed what they're saying
is and
it's harmful and it's a lie.
But Allah
is is is a grantor of pardon.
Indeed, the person who seeks justice
and then is oppressed
and then is persecuted for seeking justice,
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will grant that persecuted
person nusr. He will grant them any success.
And you will grant the person who persecuted
him.
When you read the verse like why why
not?
There's no because there's someone who actually made
a mistake will be worthy of of at
some point.
And whatever difficulty you run into in your
life,
it's to make up for a mistake that
you made before, something to remove your
pardons
many, many sins. There's a lot of mistakes
that you make that Allah subhanahu completely pardons.
It is forgotten. You don't even remember.
It's not even you removed it from the
book. It doesn't hold you accountable for it.
It doesn't require a discussion about it at
all. It's it's
He's the one who accepts repentance from his
servants and he pardons
The prophet said that Allah told me that
from my Ummah,
there will be people who will enter Jannah
with no hisab and no adab. There'll be
no judgment
whatsoever. Yeah.
70,000.
And I asked him for more, so he
put every
a1000 another 70,000.
The only way that these
people enter is through.
It's a pardon. It's even something that we
we use in in modern terminology.
It's a pardon, and then people who are
in jail, they leave,
and it's wiped.
Their rec their record is not on their
record anymore. It's a pardon. It's a it's
a big deal. Even when it happens in
dunya, it's a big deal. Imagine happening when
it happens, Yani. The yom al qiyam, Allah
grants grants pardon.
And you follow the, the concept in the
Quran,
you find it, you find it always with
the big problems.
Big mistakes, you find Allah
as
or at the end of it because the
big mistakes need that, that quick from negative
to because because if you don't have that,
you end up feeling you end up feeling
that this this sin will continue to haunt
you everywhere.
And that's not what sin should do to
you. You should learn from it. You should
from Tawba, but you should be able to
know that it's gone. At some point, it's
not there anymore. It's going to be removed
completely, and that's exactly what
is for. It's to tell you that, no.
No. There's there's a good possibility
that not only is it removed, but it's
it's flipped to something different. And that's what
this night is for.
That's what we're working towards. This is what
this is what opportunity you have is this
night that's
that's that's coming coming your way.
I wanna talk about how to live with
it because I think that's the most important
part of understanding this story.
Number 1, if you want Allah
to grant you Afu, if you want to
live with his name in
and what you're looking for is that Allah
grants you grants you a pardon, then you
need to do that yourself.
You have to be able to grant pardon
yourself.
He says
and this is the is is the story,
of Aisha radiAllahu
anam. Aisha was talked about in an extremely
disrespectful manner. And her father Abu Bakr,
he was taking care
he was taking care of someone, meaning he
was literally financially responsible for a gentleman, for
a adult
who actually
participated in in moving the rumor along. Right?
His name is Mispah.
And Mispah
was someone who said and he he said
things.
So when Ubaka ur found out that this
gentleman had done that, he said, Khilass, I
I'm I'll never give him another,
I'll
never give him money again.
So
the
And may the ones
who have wealth
and those who are related to people, may
they not withhold their wealth
from the people who are related to them
or the masakin
or the muhajirim.
And the people who are I mean, who
who lack wealth or people who immigrate to
Medina.
He's speaking to Sayyidina Abu Bakr about
and may they grant pardon.
May they look the other way, may they
remove.
Love that Allah subhanahu forgive your sin.
And he said, well, I will never hold
back well from mister Hagan. You know this
gentleman, Yani, said something about his daughter,
Those who are able to pardon people. Pardoning
means that you don't
talk about it ever again
and you restore trust afterwards. It's a big
deal. It's not a simple it's not an
easy thing.
Is hard.
It's very hard. It's actually the most difficult
thing you'll ever do. I'll talk about it
a little bit tonight during the it's very
hard. Try and do it throughout the day.
Forgiveness is one thing. Forgiveness is going from
negative to neutral.
That's that's that's good. If you just go
from I'm not I forgive you, but that's
it. I just I'm not gonna hold you
accountable for it. I'm not gonna ask anything
for
is more than that. Is when you when
you completely remove this story.
Don't this this will never be talked about
again. This will never come come up again.
Going to go back not only to how
we were before, but probably even better. That's
what is. It's very hard to perform.
It's very hard. The story that comes with
this ayam, the story of his imam alizhin
Abideen. And some of them say this story
of, you know, But
what the story is is that,
a young servant in the house would
drop a
a basin of hot water over one of
his children
and basically caused the kid to die.
And then she would get very scared when
she saw and when she did made the
mistake, the father standing there, obviously, I mean,
this is a devastating moment in the life
of any individual.
So she got very scared and she said
The ones who who who suppress
their their anger and don't
I suppress the anger.
So she got
greedy. And those who pardon people.
I pardon you.
And then he said, Allah Allah loves the
excellent. And he said, go go. You're free.
And, I talked to the prophet on the
day of Fat Hamakkah. After 23,
20 plus years of of struggle with,
with Quraysh,
Abu Sufyan,
he had made so many mistakes up to
that moment that he didn't feel that there
was a way back for him. He didn't
he couldn't see he couldn't find a way
to redeem himself. He didn't know if this
was possible. For how how was he going
to redeem himself?
So he would because he had gone and
lied and he had he just did so
many problems. Like, he he done so many
mistakes that it was hard for him to
come back. And the last one is he
come to Medina and he lied to the
prophet, alaihis salam, face and told him that
they didn't break the treaty even though they
did. And he he tried to to fool
the prophet, alayhis salaam,
and he knew that he there's no coming
back from this. So now that the prophet,
alayhis salaam, had made it, into Mecca and
he was going to enter Mecca, he didn't
want, Yani to be humiliated that day. So
he's trying to find a way out of
this. So he goes to say, what
do
I do? Like, what what do I you
went to Abbas. Abbas said, I don't know
why I say, Nani. So they ask Sayyidina
And
Ali said, it's easy. There's
no
problem.
You say to him exactly what the the
the siblings of Yusuf said to him to
Yusuf alaihis salam.
Because and this is a side note. Because
the prophet alaihis salam,
unlike us, he uses the Quran to learn
from it for himself. Like, he learns to
actually use the Quran to follow what these
prophets did, not to project it on on
others.
So and because he lives like that, if
you grant him,
the opportunity
to practice something
that one of the prophets, alaihi mus salam,
did, he'll he'll jump on it a 100%.
That's what he's waiting for. He's waiting for
an opportunity to do something that is similar
to one of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala's messages
before. There's no hesitation there. So I think
that the law of Anhu from his fiqh,
he knew this. He knew that, Sayyidna, the
prophet
if he's granted the opportunity to do something
like that, there'll be no hesitation.
So he told him, don't no problem. Just
go when you see him, say
Just say those words. You'll memorize it. So
it was if you memorize it. So say
exactly like that. Don't say anything else. Say
that because that's what's in Surat Yousef. You
say that and you'll and you'll be fine.
Don't play around. Don't
don't don't come up and do and just
say something different. Say this, if you want
to get so I would say was sit
down and memorize the wording.
And, of course, the journey from from that
moment is meeting the prophet
was very dangerous because the Sahaba were seeing
him and yeah. He's deserve yeah. He's he
deserves to be executed at that point from
from what he had done. And then Abbas
was just kinda basically pushing everything went away,
trying to make it to the prophet
he would make it to him,
and the moment of
the prophet,
He came to me to Medina. He lied
to me. Lied to my face.
He told me he's he's pointing out what
happened. So doesn't waste any time to explain
himself.
There's no there's no hard feelings anymore. Khalas,
it's all gone. I have removed all of
it.
Mean there's no when I every time I
see you, I I want to I want
to do atab. I want to talk about
it again. I want no. It's like there's
no no hard feelings left. Yeah. And Allah
will forgive you. And he is the most
merciful. Khilaz is gone. It's gone. It's like
it never existed.
We move on from here.
And then he came to Abu Sufyan,
His wording was you beat me,
not with the sword.
How patient you are,
how loving you are. After all this, you're
still trying to get me to I need
to accept Islam and to be on
you I I give up. I give up.
I don't know what it is that I
don't know what you're made of, but, yeah,
this is
So he said it.
There's still something in my heart.
And they would enter Medina and
he would gather all the people who for
years years years fought and still did not
give up on the time of Mecca, and
they tried to fight back. He'd gather them
all together, and he would
say, what do you think I'm going to
do with you?
You've always been a, generous brother of ours
and a generous nephew. Meaning, however you see
our relation whether a brother or a nephew,
and you've always been generous.
Go. I have I have,
released you for the sake of Allah Subhanahu
Wa Ta'ala.
Offering offering
See if you can do it. And if
you can't, don't feel too bad about it,
but try. Because it's not a simple task
for you to do requires your ability
to to let it go.
You
know?
I don't wanna mock the, curling again and
like I did last year, people get upset
with me. But I but the concept, I
feel like it's like it's like curling.
You know?
You're holding on to it. Just
just let it go.
Just just release.
You'll feel better about it. Just just let
it go. It's not it's not worth it's
not worth because it doesn't bother anyone but
you really. It doesn't really
weigh on anyone aside from yourself.
And if you if you if you do
that,
Allah
refuses for his servant to perform an act
of of altruism
more than himself.
Like, it's impossible. You can't perform and then
Allah not perform for you. If you perform
then you will receive that which you performed
time and time again or many folds.
Because if if the abbot is going to
offer afu, then what do you think the
Lord is going to offer?
So that's the first one,
offer pardon. The second one is utilize
this category is called self renewal.
Self renewal is the ability for you instead
of living your life feeling that you are
burdened and held down with your sin, Afu,
the night of Afu or the day of
or the or the concept of Afu offers
you the ability
to stand up straight again. By saying that
it's all gone now. I don't have to
think about that anymore. I don't have to
worry about it anymore. It's completely
He's going to forget he's going to pardon
me, so it's not there. It's like it
never happened. It never happened and I move
on from it. Now be careful.
Is not about people's. Allah will not pardon
you for something you did to someone else.
That has to come through them. You have
to actually go and and fig and fix
that piece first. But I'm talking about sin
that maybe you don't have the access to
do that or a mistake that you made
between you and Allah that is that is
extremely dire and problematic.
Living life with feeling that that it that
is weighing on you all throughout your existence
is very difficult. It makes life hard to
live. It makes your
degree of ambition with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
low and it takes away your motivation, your
optimism, and that's not what this is about.
You're supposed to be able to to to
rid yourself of that, which is why Al
Afu as a concept is there. It gives
you that energy to go back and be
better again because he will completely pardon all
that which you did before. It's like it
never happened again and being granted that gift
is is meaningful because it mean okay. Now
I'm, it's it's, it's equal. It's an equal
line. It's it's it's, it's sound ground for
all of us. I'm not I'm not always
disadvantaged because of my past. No. No. I'm
not disadvantaged anymore. He will he will pardon
me and it's like I never did it.
I can go and I can compete with
everyone else instead of feeling all the time
that I'm held back. And that's the beauty
of al-'Afru,
is that it gives you that that opportunity
for you to to go up to go
out and and and do
and do what you hope to do without
feeling the burden of your sin. And, Yani,
all we can say is what the prophet
taught
us. May Allah grant us
his pardon during these nights and may Allah
grant us the strength to show others
the beauty of pardoning within their own life.
