The Prophet ﷺ would say before food and
afterwards and I narrate two hadiths for you
inshallah quickly.
It's an authentic chain of narration for this
hadith, it's in the Jamia al-Tirmidhi and
other books as well, the Tuhfa and others,
and it's narrated to us by Umar ibn
Abi Salama.
Umar ibn Abi Salama is one of the
sahaba who grew up as a child in
the Prophet ﷺ's homes because he lived with
Umm Salama and he was a child.
The Prophet ﷺ altogether had 18 children in
his house living, most of them were not
his.
18 children were taken care of within the
house and I've shared the names and the
numbers before in other sessions.
So Umar ibn Abi Salama is one of
them, he grows up in the house of
the Prophet ﷺ, so he tells us this
story, he said he entered the house once
and the Prophet ﷺ had food on the
ground, so the Prophet ﷺ called him, come
close, say Bismillah, وَكُلُ الْبِيَمِينِ can eat with
your right hand, وَكُلُ الْمِمَّا يَلِي can eat
from that which is closest to you in
the plate.
And this is the adab the Prophet ﷺ
followed and the way he ate, and this
is the adab he taught the children in
his home to eat by ﷺ.
It's an adab that we have to teach
our children to have as well.
Sometimes because we don't eat in collective plates
where we're all kind of putting our hands
in, we're eating in our own bowls, it
doesn't really change that much when it comes
to scooping for yourself.
So the same adab applies.
So you scoop from that which is closest
to you within the container that you're taking
the food out, and you eat what is
proportionate for yourself in terms of the number
of people around you.
So you have to look how people are
actually coming through the food, how much food
there is, and then a quick mathematical calculation
in your mind, you can figure out how
much of this food is actually your portion,
and then you take that much and you
take it from the closest part of the
container and put it in your own bowl,
and then your plate, you make sure that
the food is closest to you on the
plate.
And this is the adab of the Prophet
ﷺ.
He taught them to eat with their right
hands, and to talk about the right hand
piece.
I'll leave it for a different session insha
'Allah ta'ala.
The second hadith I want to narrate for
you insha'Allah quickly.
He says ﷺ indeed, and this is a
hadith also narrated in the collection of Imam
Muslim, that indeed Allah ﷻ will be satisfied
with His servant, that His servant eats a
food that they like, and they say and
then they show gratitude to Him for it.
Or drink a drink that they like and
they show gratitude to Allah ﷻ for it.
Meaning it's not that complicated to please Allah
ﷻ within your life.
It's not that complicated.
He grants you the blessing of food and
the blessing of drink.
Eat it and enjoy.
Just make sure you show hamd and shukr
at the end of it to Him ﷻ.
If you do that, then He is pleased
with you.
He will be pleased with you just remembering
that what you just ate was a gift,
granted to you by Allah ﷻ.
And inside your heart you feel gratitude to
Him ﷻ for what you just ate.
That's the simplicity of this act.
It's very simple.
You eat the food.
Thank you.
And other narrations.
There's all these different things you can say.
You can just say الحمد لله to Allah
ﷻ more than enough.
But this hadith is saying,
This will please Allah ﷻ.
Indeed it will please Him.
He's not looking for anything heroic.
He doesn't need acrobatics.
Just when you eat the food and you
drink the drink, just remember to turn to
Him and say الحمد يا رب that you
granted me this.
And to remember that it's a gift and
a bounty that was given to you by
Allah ﷻ.
And if you do that then you're good.
It doesn't have to be complicated and it's
not actually designed to be complicated.
But when we forget the basics, the simple
things, the daily stuff, the issues that are
ongoing occurrences, then that's a problem.
But it's very...
Another scholar would recite this, Hayyam Nawi.
How
easy it is for our Lord to be
pleased.
are grateful to Him that pleasing Him is
easy.
Because He could have made pleasing Himself difficult
and then it would be harder for us
to do so.
But He made pleasing Him easy for us.
So we are grateful also for the fact
that He made pleasing Him easy to us.
Just eat the food and drink the drink
and show some gratitude at the end of
it.
And that will please Allah ﷻ.
And I think there's a beautiful adab within
that.
