Abdulbary Yahya – Lessons from the Seerah
AI: Summary ©
The Prophet's invasion of Uhud led to the loss of Muslims and the failure of the army to protect them. The Prophet's desire to have the whole army protected and not be attackable led to the decision to leave Uhud. The history of the Prophet's attack on the mushroom tree, including the use of protecting the Prophet with body parts and the use of a sword, is discussed. The importance of learning the hadith of the Prophet and protecting the beast's image is emphasized. The shuhadauh and protecting the troops and companions during the battle of Uhud is also discussed.
AI: Summary ©
So, Shamas Ibn Uthman, when he was, when
the Prophet ﷺ was being surrounded by the
Mushrikun.
Why were they surrounded?
Because remember, the Meccans were fleeing.
When they were fleeing the battlefield, they were
dropping their weapons and their armor.
Why?
Because if you would flee, your armor is
very heavy.
So, you drop your armor and you drop
your weapons.
And there were companions picking this up already.
And the Meccans were fleeing from the battlefield.
And that's when the archers came down from
the mountain.
Came back, came down from the mountain.
And that left, that left an opening for
Khalid Ibn Walid and Ibn Abi Jahl.
And they saw the opportunity.
Because the Prophet ﷺ left them on the
mountain in order for them to protect the
flanks of the Muslims.
So that the cavalry would not be able
to come into the battlefield.
Why?
Because if the cavalry comes, it breaks up
the ranks of the Muslims.
And the Muslims were outnumbered greatly on that
day.
And so that's why you have to stay
together.
You have to stay together and you can't
be...
And especially the Prophet ﷺ, when he went
to Uhud, he chose a strategic position where
you would not be able to, where you're
not open to being attacked from different fronts.
And so you have to have your back
protected.
So what's the back protected by whom?
By what?
The mountain, the mountain of Uhud.
It's protected.
So you're going to fight and you have
the mountain to your back.
And then you have this mountain here and
the battlefield is here.
So when you have, you want to make
sure that nobody's coming to attack.
Remember the mountain of Uhud goes like this.
And so if you're here, you're protected.
So there's one from the back.
If the Muslims are fighting forward, this area
where the Muslims are on the archers, they
could see the whole battlefield.
And the purpose of them staying there is
to keep the cavalry from joining and breaking
up the ranks of the Muslims.
So it's like in modern times you have
the horsemen, like the horses, they are like
fighter jets.
And if you have the archers on top,
that's the anti-aircraft missiles.
And if you don't have the anti-aircraft
missiles, then your army can't advance forward because
they're going to start coming.
And once they start bombing, you're on foot,
on the ground, it's over.
The Muslims didn't have a cavalry like the
Meccans did.
They brought all of their wealth.
They put all of the resources together to
try to remember what was their purpose in
the battle of Uhud.
What was their intended purpose?
Why did they come?
They finished the Muslims.
They wanted to take over Medina.
They didn't just want to come fight.
So actually they did not fulfill their purpose.
The Muslims were successful.
So most people, they think, oh, the Muslims
lost in the battle of Uhud.
No, the Muslims didn't lose in the battle
of Uhud.
Strategically, they didn't lose.
Because they did what they were supposed to
do, and that was to repel the mushrikeen
because the purpose of the mushrikeen, they came
to try to wipe out the Muslims once
and for all.
And, of course, they wanted to avenge their
loss at Badr.
But their ultimate goal was to wipe the
Muslims out.
And so when they had sort of like
a moral defeat, it's because they actually couldn't
go anymore.
They also knew that, you know, you see
the fierce fighting at the beginning.
They already knew that the Muslims were very
strong.
And that's why they were already running from
the very beginning.
So when the Prophet ﷺ was surrounded, and,
of course, when did they surround the Prophet
ﷺ?
It was because the archers left, and then
when the cavalry came, it broke up the
ranks of the Muslims.
When they broke up the ranks of the
Muslims, those who were fleeing, they turned around.
And when they turned around, they also started
going towards the Prophet ﷺ.
And around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, there
were companions amongst the Ansar, who were protecting
the Prophet ﷺ.
Protecting the Prophet ﷺ.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell, and
when he fell into one of the pits
and holes at the foot of the Battle
of Uhud, some of the companions, because they
were, the mushrikun were all around that area.
So when some of the Muslims saw what
happened, they thought that the Prophet ﷺ had
been killed.
And that's why the rumors were spreading around
on the battlefield, and many people, of course,
fought even more bravely.
Others, they were in such a shock that
they actually sat down where they were.
And, of course, we've been telling about the
stories at this moment with the different companions
of the Prophet ﷺ, and what they did.
Like we spoke about Anas ibn Nadr, and
what happened with him, and Abdullah ibn Haram.
These were all companions of the Prophet ﷺ
that we spoke about, and we know what
they did during that time.
But what was happening around the Prophet ﷺ?
What was happening around the Prophet ﷺ was
they were trying to, of course, kill the
Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
And there were others who were coming towards
the Prophet ﷺ, and during that time, this
was a time in which the scholars have
mentioned that Shammas ibn Uthman was 34 years
of age.
And so this is an age that a
person is in the peak of their youth,
in the 30s, the beginning of the 30s,
and so forth.
In 20, you're still young, but when you're
30, that's like, that's when you're very, very,
still very, very strong.
And so this was, the Battle of Uhud
happened when Shammas ibn Uthman was 34 years
of age.
And so he was around the Prophet.
He was, he came to, when he saw
what was happening, he came to protect the
Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He came to protect the Prophet ﷺ.
And most of the people were fighting, of
course, and he was also fighting the mushrikun
who were around the area.
But when he saw the people attacking the
Prophet ﷺ, it was, you know, Shammas was
all around the Prophet ﷺ and saw him
trying to protect him.
But when they were about to attack him
and strike him, he threw his body upon
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
He threw his body to protect the Prophet
ﷺ so that anyone who would strike any
arrow or anything that came towards the Prophet
ﷺ, it would hit him instead.
And so that's why the Messenger of Allah
ﷺ he said afterwards, he said, مَا وَجَدْتُ
لِشَمَّاسِ شَبَهًا إِلَّا الْجُنَّ إِلَّا الْجُنَّ He said,
the only thing that I could, that I
could give you what Shammas was like was,
he was like a junnah, he was like
a shield, he was like a shield to
me.
And that's the best description that I can
describe him on the battle of Uhud, that
he was the shield of the Prophet ﷺ.
He used his body to shield the Prophet
ﷺ so that the mushrikun would not be
able to, would not be able to kill
the Prophet ﷺ.
And he said, I looked left and I
looked right.
Wherever I looked, I saw Shammas.
And he was, of course, protecting me with
his sword and his body until finally, you
know, finally he was struck by Umayyad ibn
Khalaf.
And so this was the, this was when
he was, he was struck and he was
injured very, very severely.
And when, when, when he was, when he
was injured after the battle, after the battle,
they found him, you know, on the ground
where they found him, that he was extremely
injured.
So they had to carry him, but he
didn't, he wasn't killed.
He was protecting the Prophet ﷺ.
But at the end of the battle, they
had to carry him.
And so they carried him to the house,
to the room of Aisha radiyallahu anha, of
Aisha radiyallahu anha.
And so Umm Salamah radiyallahu anha.
Who is Umm Salamah?
Where is she from?
From Bani Makhzum.
So Umm Salamah is from the tribe of
the Prophet ﷺ, the tribe of Shammas.
They are from the same tribe, from Bani
Makhzum.
So she realizes this.
She says, that's my cousin.
Like, that's my cousin.
Ibn Ammi yadkhulu ala ghayri.
Like, Ibn Ammi yadkhulu ala ghayri.
Like, how could she, he's from my tribe.
Like, he's from my family.
Like, how could she, how could you, how
could you put him in someone else's room?
Umm Salamah radiyallahu anha.
What was Umm Salamah known for?
What did she say when she got married
to the Prophet ﷺ?
Anybody remember?
She said, O Messenger of Allah, I'm extremely
jealous.
Like, I'm not going to be the only
wife now, right?
So, she says, I'm extremely jealous.
Like, I just want to, she just says,
she's saying this, she's saying like, I just
want to let you know ahead of time,
I'm extremely jealous.
And yeah, you want to marry, because the
Prophet ﷺ, after Abu Salamah passed away, you
know, he was, that was when the Prophet
ﷺ, you know, later on, the Prophet ﷺ
married her.
And one of the things that she mentioned
to the Prophet ﷺ was like, you know,
O Messenger of Allah, I'm extremely jealous.
And so the Prophet ﷺ, he asked the,
she asked the Prophet ﷺ to make dua
for her.
And so that's why she's saying, what is
she saying?
She's saying, my cousin, like my cousin, he's
my cousin, you're going to put him in
the room of Aisha.
The room of Aisha.
Bring him to my room.
Like, bring him, why are you bringing him
to somebody else's room?
Like, somebody else.
This is from my family.
And so, the Prophet ﷺ ordered that he
be carried to the room of Umm Salama
رضي الله عنها.
And this is where, also, this is where
he passed away actually.
So he didn't pass away on the battlefield.
He was injured severely in the battlefield, but
he passed away in the room of Umm
Salama رضي الله عنها.
And some of the scholars have mentioned that
he was brought back to be buried with
the shuhada of Uhud.
And others have mentioned that he was buried
with everybody else.
And so there are different opinions.
The stronger opinion seems to be like he
was brought back.
And others have said, no, he wasn't.
And if he wasn't, then he would be
the only person that was not that was
amongst the shuhada of Uhud that was not
buried at Uhud itself.
But some of the scholars, and we have
some narration that he was actually brought back
to Uhud and he was buried with those,
the people of Uhud, I mean the martyrs
of Uhud.
But, of course, he was he was considered
a martyr of Uhud, even though he didn't
die at Uhud, because the injury that he
sustained was a result of protecting the Prophet
ﷺ in the Battle of Uhud itself.
And so he's considered one of the martyrs
of Uhud.
And if you're a martyr, a martyr in
the battlefield, then the Prophet ﷺ, of course,
all the martyrs, the janazah for them is
unique.
And what's the unique thing that you don't
do for them?
You don't wash them in?
You don't.
You know, you have, you still bury them
with them.
No, no, I mean, you still, you know,
you cover them up still.
Like with the, yes.
But you don't pray, you don't pray.
You don't pray.
You don't pray on them.
You actually do wrap them up, because if
you have them, if you have it, it's
just that the companions didn't have them.
That's why you cover them up.
And sometimes, that's like Hamzah.
We spoke with Hamzah.
What happened?
Who brought the coffin for Hamzah?
Safiyyah.
It was Safiyyah.
She brought two.
She heard that he was martyred, so she
brought the coffin.
But the thing is, you wrap them with
whatever you're able to wrap them up.
And if you don't have them, then you
just bury them the way they are.
So it's not, so the thing that's unique
for them is that you don't have to
wash them, and you don't have to pray
the janazah prayer like this.
The janazah prayer that we know upon them.
And so, this was Shammas.
What did he, you know, during the battle,
he protected the Prophet ﷺ with even his
own body.
And he was all the way, all around
the Prophet ﷺ.
And so this, this is what the companions,
they always wanted to protect the Prophet ﷺ.
They had the opportunity, of course, to protect
the Prophet ﷺ physically.
But we as Muslims also, nowadays, when we
protect the sunnah, we defend the sunnah of
the Prophet ﷺ, and defend the honor of
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that's something that's
mandatory, that's obligatory upon us, because if you
love anybody, we say that we love the
Prophet ﷺ.
If you love your parents, you love your
mother, you would defend their honor when somebody
says bad things about them and so forth.
But how about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?
And that's why when someone, you know, says,
does, you know, is attacking even the sunnah
of the Prophet ﷺ, our love for the
sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, our love for
the Prophet ﷺ, entails that we defend the
sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
We defend the honor of the Prophet ﷺ.
And when somebody attacks the character of the
Prophet ﷺ, who is like the most flawless
of all, you know, infallible, that Allah ﷻ
made a Prophet, a Messenger of God, but
you know, the non-Muslims, they always attack
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
And so those who are able to, if
we love the Prophet ﷺ, you know, we
don't have the opportunity to defend him physically,
you know, like the companions like Shamas, Ibn
Uthman did, but there are different ways also.
Anybody know, there's a great scholar, this scholar,
he had a dream.
He had a dream.
He had a dream that he had a
fan and he was fanning all of these
flies that were coming from the Messenger of
Allah ﷺ.
And this was his dream.
And so anyone know who saw that dream
and what it meant?
The great scholar of Islam.
Who was it?
It was Al-Imam Al-Bukhari.
Right, and so he saw that and the
interpretation of it, he went to someone who
was able to interpret, he said, you're going
to defend, you're going to protect the Sunnah
of the Prophet ﷺ.
And so this is, what did he do?
From those who, from all the lies and
everything, people saying things about the Prophet ﷺ
that were not true or making up a
hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that
was not true.
So that was his defense of the honor
of the Prophet ﷺ by being at the
service of the hadith and sunnah of the
Prophet ﷺ.
Not just the sunnah in terms of action,
but protecting the hadith.
And that's why nowadays when we say Rawah
Al-Bukhari, how do you feel about that
hadith?
Like we know, there's no question.
If somebody says this is reported by Al
-Imam Al-Bukhari, like alhamdulillah.
We know this is authentic hadith.
This is, right?
That's reported by Al-Imam Al-Bukhari.
And this is also of course his defense
of the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ by
protecting the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah
ﷺ.
The hadith from all of the fabrications and,
you know, sifting through the hadith of the
Prophet ﷺ so that we, even in our
time right now, we can feel comfortable and
say, oh this is in Sahih Bukhari.
And then we're at peace as a result
of that.
So there are many ways that we can
defend the honor of the Prophet ﷺ.
Of course the first thing that we have
to do is we have to learn the
hadith of the Prophet ﷺ.
And we have to apply the teachings of
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in our daily
lives and embody the teachings of the Qur
'an, which is the embodiment of the character
that's taught in the Qur'an is in
the character of the Prophet ﷺ.
That's what the Prophet ﷺ, Aisha ﷺ, described
him and she said, his character, how was
his character?
His character was the Qur'an.
He was the embodiment of the teachings of
the Qur'an.
And so we hear in the Battle of
Uhud and many other battles and remember also
when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just came
to Medina.
When he arrived in Medina, there were threats
coming from the Meccans and the hypocrites and
they weren't hypocrites yet, they were non-Muslims
that did not accept Islam yet.
They were trying to conspire.
Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul had gathered the
people and so some of the companions were
worried.
They were worried.
Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas رضي الله عنه He
was about to go to sleep and he
heard some footsteps.
Right?
He's seeing, hearing something.
He's worried.
So he goes to the Prophet ﷺ with
his weapon and everything.
He's at night time and the Messenger of
Allah ﷺ says, What are you doing here?
What are you doing here?
He said, Oh Messenger of Allah, you know
because it was very tense at that time.
After the Meccans had declared war, they sent
a message and you know they were already,
they had already threatened Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.
They said, you know, if you weren't with
so and so, you would not have returned
home alive.
Right?
So everyone was worried that they would try
to kill the Prophet ﷺ.
So the companions of the Messenger of Allah
ﷺ they were, they were worried also.
So that's why Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas came
at night time and the Prophet ﷺ said,
What are you doing with it?
What are you doing here?
And Sa'd said, Oh Messenger of Allah, I
was, I came here to protect you.
I was worried that maybe somebody had come,
you know, maybe to try to harm you
at night time.
So I couldn't sleep and so I woke
up.
So that's why I'm here.
And so he made dua, you know, for
him.
And then Allah ﷻ revealed, وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ
النَّاسِ Surely Allah will protect you from the
people.
Surely when Allah revealed this verse, the Prophet
ﷺ said, Everyone just go, go home.
Allah has already promised to protect this.
Everyone go home.
So Allah ﷻ has already planned to protect,
He was going to protect the Prophet ﷺ
from all of the people trying to kill
him and so forth.
So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent them
away, sent the companions away.
But even though, of course, the companions loved
the Prophet ﷺ so much.
They were always trying to protect and help
him.
But, you know, you put your trust in
Allah, right?
You put your trust in Allah but you
still do all that you can.
Allah has already promised the Prophet ﷺ victory.
Right?
Already promised the Prophet ﷺ victory.
But, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ still took
so many actions and steps to try to
achieve that victory.
Right?
Even through the battles and so forth.
So the victory is going to come but
it doesn't mean that, you know, you don't
do anything.
Right?
So even the companions, even when Allah ﷻ
says He promised to protect the Prophet ﷺ,
the companions, of course, protect them through what?
Through the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, through the
companions also.
Through the companions of the Prophet ﷺ protecting
him also, even in the battle.
And of course, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
was not some, you might think, well, he
was surrounded by all these people trying to
protect him.
Was he, um, what was he doing?
Was he like running away?
No.
He was more courageous than any one of
them.
He was not a coward of course.
He was more courageous than any one of
them.
That's why Ali ibn Bī Ṭālim, r.a,
who was one of those who were with
the Prophet ﷺ in the battle of Badr,
he said, we were trying to protect the
Prophet ﷺ but he kept them going in
front of us, to the point where he
ended up protecting us instead.
He ended up protecting us instead.
But you know, during the battle of Uhud,
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was being struck
from all corners.
And you have to understand, there's the companions
were dispersed because of the cavalry that had
come.
So that's why there's so many companions who
actually were killed and martyred, even before Shammas
ibn Uthman came.
But when they started trying to strike the
Prophet ﷺ, he used his, you know, when
everything's happening around, he's using his sword and
there's so many that he threw his body
to protect the Prophet ﷺ.
He said, there's nothing that I can describe
to you that he looked more like, that
he was more like on that day than
a shield.
Like he was a shield.
He was a shield for me.
Like he was, that's what he looked like,
a jannah.
And some people might read that the word
jannah is the same, right?
It's written the same way.
But here is, jannah is also a shield
and that's why the Prophet ﷺ, because I
did hear somebody, I was listening to a
lecture about, before and somebody said, كان شبيه
بالجنة.
He was like jannah, like Ya Allah, it
didn't make sense.
How is he like jannah?
You see the word jannah.
He's not like jannah.
He's jannah.
And that's why the Prophet ﷺ mentioned الصيام
جنة.
صيام جنة.
Fasting is جنة.
Fasting is a shield.
جنة.
So it's a جنة, it's a shield, protects
you from the hellfire.
And also protects you from, you know, doing
things that are haram also.
You know, your eyes looking at things that
are haram or listening to that which is
haram.
So inshallah with that, we'll end it with
that inshallah.
Next week we'll continue again with some more
of the shuhada uhud.
Remember we have there 70.
We're not going to cover all 70 of
them.
But I think we've covered the majority, the
major companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
But next week inshallah we'll continue with the
shuhada uhud.
Because every time we mention one companion, then
we see a different area, right?
We see a different scene during the battle
of Uhud.
We see a different scene during the battle
of Uhud.
Then you have different scenes during the battle
of Uhud.
And these are all, you know, when the
companions are martyred, that's where all the action
is.
That's where all the bravery and the action
in the battlefield.
So that's why alhamdulillah we want to take
it little by little by going through some
of the companions who were martyred during that.
And then we'll continue with every other events
likewise inshallah.
So that we can have a better idea
of and love the Prophet ﷺ more and
learn more about some of the lessons and
the bravery.
And also the main thing is the lessons,
right?
That we take from.
And the lesson that we learn from here
is to protect the honor of the Prophet
ﷺ.
Also, and because they protected even with their
lives.
And so these were one of the most
brave of people.
Anyone have any questions?
Yes.
Obey Obey Yeah, yeah.
That's right.
I meant to say obey.
You change one letter and it's a big
difference.
Different person.
I meant to say Obey.
Because he was the one, of course, that
he was closest to the Messenger of Allah.
And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ actually struck
him also.
Same name, yeah.
Same name.
But there are a lot of them.
Yes, he was fighting also.
During the battle.
During the battle of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ
was at the foothill of Uhud.
And he was, of course, guiding the army.
He's the general.
But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is also,
you know, he was protected by the companions
of the Prophet ﷺ.
But the attacks towards the Messenger of Allah
ﷺ was so severe that all of those
who were surrounding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,
they were martyred.
They were martyred.
And other people had to come.
Other people had to come.
At the beginning, it was the Ansar that
was around the Prophet ﷺ.
And then the other companions started coming also.
And of course, this was a time in
which there was total chaos.
And so all of these battles, the Messenger
of Allah ﷺ was there.
He was very brave.
He would fight also.
But sometimes you need someone to guide the
people.
To let the people know where to go
and what to do.
So if you're in the front line, then
you don't have anybody guiding the people, telling,
hey, what are you supposed to do here?
And if something happens, you have to be
also in a position where you can see.
You can see.
Everyone has roles.
But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was extremely
brave.
So some people, they might think, well, he
was just there like he was cowering right
now.
He's fighting.
He's fighting the whole time.
And when they're attacking, he's fighting.
But there's...
But you have to understand that the non
-Muslims, when they see, who are they going
to go to?
Of course.
They're not going to go to any other
guy.
They don't care about, you know, another person
who they don't know, who they can't recognize.
All of them know what the Prophet ﷺ
looked like.
They're from Mecca.
They're from Mecca.
When they see him, immediately, that's it.
That's where I'm going.
Yeah, he was the main target.
If you take him out, that's it.
He's the leader.
That's who you want.
I mean, that's who they want in the
battle.
And that's why all that attack that was
coming towards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from
different angles and everybody was coming towards him.
Allahu akbar.
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
