In every generation, there are people who have
to make the ultimate sacrifice.
We have hundreds of thousands of our brothers
and sisters today in Gaza who are making
that sacrifice, whose lives are being taken from
them, who are being killed and murdered and
massacred.
But this is not a new tradition.
This story is as old as the ummah
itself.
And inshaAllah in this series, we're going to
be talking about the marchers from the time
and the life of the Prophet ﷺ as
a source of comfort and inspiration.
When the Prophet ﷺ sent Mus'ab ibn
Umair رضي الله تعالى عنه to preach and
teach the message of Islam in Medina, one
of the people who he shared Islam with
and he was able to bring them into
the fold of Islam, one of the people
that he converted, he was a leader of
his tribe, a leader of his people.
His name was Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh
when he accepted Islam, he gathered together his
whole extended family, Banu Abd al-Ash'hal.
And he said, كيف تعلمون أمري فيكم?
What is my status amongst you all?
And they said, سيدنا فضلا وأيمننا نقيبة.
They said that you are our leader in
terms of virtue.
And you are the most trusted amongst us
in terms of leadership.
We trust you to lead us.
He said that فَإِنَّ كَلَامَكُمْ عَلَيَّ حَرَامٌ I
have sworn that I will not speak to
any of you until you believe in Allah
and His Messenger ﷺ.
And the entire extended family of Sa'd ibn
Mu'adh became Muslim on the spot.
He converted essentially like a village to Islam
through the conviction that he had, the kind
of faith that he had, the power of
just his iman and his soul and his
spirit.
And he had so many remarkable moments.
In the Battle of Badr, when there was
a question, they had initially gone to intercept
the caravan of Abu Sufyan, but now an
army was coming and it was about to
turn into a battle, a fight.
And when the Prophet ﷺ consulted with the
companions, what should we do?
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh
said, Ya Rasulullah, Messenger of Allah, may I
please say something?
He said, go ahead.
We believed
in you and we affirmed that you have
brought the truth.
And we have promised to obey you, O
Messenger of Allah.
So we are with you.
If you went to the ends of the
earth, we would follow you to the ends
of the earth.
If you dove into the ocean, we would
dive in behind you.
We will never leave your side.
We are with you till the very end.
That's the kind of loyalty that he had
to the Prophet ﷺ.
And then came the Battle of Uhud, and
then came the Battle of Khandaq, the Trench.
And during the Battle of the Trench, when
Medina was under siege, and they were holding
off the enemy at bay through the trench
that they had dug, an arrow came across
from the enemy side and it struck Sa'd
ibn Mu'adh.
And it was a very severe strike.
He was bleeding profusely.
They kept trying to stop the bleeding, but
it didn't look too good.
He was able to hold on.
Allah had written more life for him for
a few more days until the Battle of
the Trench ended by the will and the
permission and the miracle that Allah had sent.
And then Banu Qurayza, a tribe that was
supposed to be an ally of the Muslims,
they had joined the enemy side and stabbed
the Muslims in the back.
It was time to hold them accountable for
this betrayal, for this treason.
And they said, you know what?
We'd like to surrender, but on a condition.
That your trusted companion, Muhammad ﷺ, your trusted
companion, Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, who has historically
been a friend to our people, he will
be the mediator between us.
The Prophet ﷺ said, I have no issue.
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh was injured.
He was bleeding.
He was barely surviving day to day, very
touch and go.
They brought him.
And the Prophet ﷺ said, اشر عليك في
They want you to be the mediator,
so you decide what will happen.
And he ended up making an extremely just
decision that these people that had conducted betrayal
and had committed treason, that they would be
held accountable.
They would not be let off the hook.
There would be no slap on the wrist
today.
And there would be consequences.
And the Prophet ﷺ said,
The suggestion that you have made is
exactly what God will and God intended.
And after giving this verdict, shortly thereafter, Sa'd
ibn Mu'adh passed away.
And when he passed away, the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said that for the janazah
of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, 70,000 angels
came down to the earth who have never
visited the earth before today.
And the Prophet ﷺ said,
The Prophet ﷺ
said, there are beings that are carrying Sa'd's
body other than you.
There are other beings that are carrying Sa'd's
body.
He is referring to the angels.
The Prophet ﷺ swore
by Allah.
The angels are celebrating the arrival
of the soul of Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.
And then the Prophet ﷺ said something so
profound.
He said, وَهْتَزَّلَهُ الْعَرْشِ That the throne of
God has shaken today by the departure of
Sa'd ibn Mu'adh.
This is the honor that Allah bestows upon
the soul that has to make such a
profound sacrifice of losing its worldly life for
the sake of Allah.
For the sake of the truth.
For standing up what they believe in.
And that is what we see happening with
our brothers and sisters in so many places
around the world.
But particularly in Gaza.
But we always have to remember, this is
a word of consolation to them, their loved
ones, and to all of us, the whole
ummah.
That this is the honor that Allah bestows
upon these souls.
Remember that.
That when someone's life is taken in this
world, it doesn't matter what the people of
the world say.
They might think of them as losers, or
the people who lost, people who died.
But we understand that they are people who
are honored by Allah.
And we find comfort in that.
And we find strength in that.
May Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala bless them,
may Allah reward them, may Allah elevate them.
Ameen, Ya Rabbal Alim.
